My website by furtopia, http://sunshineotter.furtopia.org is more or Â less "finished" in the sense that I'm ready/okay with it being viewed widely. I would like for the site to be accessable, even if its name appears last in a list of a thousand. My problem? The entire site seems to be invisible! I've carefully added meta tags which give titles, descriptions, and keywords to help search engines, but that isn't the bad part-- Â even searching words and phrases such as "Sunshine Otter Furtopia" or the web address itself yield no results. I find my livejournal, or references to me by other furs, though nothing about this particular address. Sometimes searches don't even show results, claiming there are no such topics covered. I'd be most appreciative if somefur could help out, or at least point me in the right direction as to what's going on here.

I honestly think it takes a little bit before new sites show up in search engines...

Yeah, it takes some time, but trust me, once the webcrawlers do find your site, it'll be at the top of the results list for its name. I speak from experience.

Thanks for the input. I was a bit worried when geocities and tripod sites were getting more coverage than me. I'll just settle down and wait a bit *waves merrily in thanks*

Well, if you're feeling impatient, or forgot to link to site somewhere (so that the crawlers can find it), you could always Submit it

(Not that this appears to be a problem anymore)

It's been several months since the creation of my site, and I'm still having this problem! I find posts I've made here at these forums, a deleted Flickr account, and my livejournal profile and there's still no mention of my site on any search engines, even if I enter the URL into the search *sighs*

I did what Niner said and submitted the site to Google, but they were uncertain as to when and whether it would actually be added to their "directory"

There must be something I'm missing about all of this...

Hmm, I'm not quite sure.

I know my site is already in the results, after existing for less than two weeks, and without trying to add it from the "addurl" link. But then again, it may be because I had another page for a few years, and set it up to redirect (permanently) to the Furtopia one last week.

My only other advice would be to link to it wherever you can (though it seems you are doing so) and wait for the crawlers to find it and parse it.

I've gotten a search to turn up my site as a top result, but so far only if "Sunshine Otter" or "Sunshineotter" is entered. Usually even if those words are typed with an extra helpful "furry" or "art" or "furtopia," it loses everything. But hey, it's a great start! (I've also submitted the site to other crawlers, and they're fairing a bit better) Thanks to everyone who gave their helpful advice =^__^=

Which are probably the only things most people would think to search for if they were looking anyway. I think this is officially resolved.

It often takes at least a few weeks before any given site starts to come up in the search engines. I believe they incorporate a delay into the process to help prevent spammers from flooding a search engine, seeing as many spam sites don't last long.

Don't expect to easily jump to the top of the "furry" results. There're a lot of sites out there to compete with. ':p'

Seriously, my Furtopia page is at the top of the second page in search results and i've had it for a year or more.
Unless you type mazz and furry.. than it's 3rd after my DA and a link to a journal where someone was talking about a dream about me having a furry comune.

also you have to submit them to the searchengines, I have had some sites put on search engines, and also, I am sure you know this< but it also helps if you have meta tags, as most searchengins won't accept sites with out them.

An other thing that greatly helps your site's ranking is having other established sites linking to your own site. The search engines often take into account just how popular and well-linked your site is. Additionally, it often expediates getting listed in the first place.
