8 year old birthday present
« on: April 02, 2003, 11:41:45 pm »
Today I sketched a pic for an 8 year old boy that we know from an oriental restaurant we have been frequenting the last couple months.

One day we decided to check out the new restaurant and there was this young oriental boy behind the counter while his family cooked for a living. While we were waiting I heard the boy telling another customer when his birthday was and how old he would be.

Well, being the way I am I borrowed a pen from the counter and sketched out a pegasus on a napkin. I showed it to the boy and he was elated! His mom looked at it and we began chatting about art and the little boy. The boy showed us something he drew on another napkin and we suggested he should write his name and the date he drew it on the paper and we explained why.

A couple weeks ago we went there for lunch and were talking to the mom about what we wanted to do for his birthday and and asked what his favorite animal was. She said we didn't have to do that but we let her know it was ok and I didn't mind since I loved to draw. We also asked if it would be ok to take his picture so I could try and include him in the pic. She said it would be ok but he wouldn't be there today. (I didn't want to tell her I had no idea how to draw people because I wanted to give it an honest try.)

We went in 2 days ago when we knew he would be there after school and talked to him about what his favorite animal might be. He showed us his playing cards with dragons and such on them and he showed me the first pic I gave him PLUS the little sketches HE had drawn on napkins! They ALL had his name and the date he drew them on it! We were really impressed that he actually followed through.

We took his pic and then sat down to eat our meal.

Well, here is the pic I have sketched for him:

"Pegasus and Dragon Friends"

I will be coloring this in the next couple days since his birthday is on Sunday!

That's fabulous, Kada! I love how you have them both interacting in flight. I think that boy is going to be absolutely thrilled to see himself on the back of a pegasus! hehe. Good Luck!

That's a very nice picture, Kada.  The Dragon is interesting, how it has both Eastern and Western attributes to it.  It's overall shape is western, as is it's scale style.  The head is more eastern, with the horns streamlined, and the part from near the neck (I forget what it's called) - they're also on it's legs.  Good work, I think it's very pretty.

Sumarra - Thank you. I love having things enteract with each other. Especially when in flight. We are going to have the camera ready when he opens it and sees it for the first time, we hope!

This has to be a first for me. The first time I tried drawing a little boy from his pic. Since the pic is small, only 8 1/2 x 11" I couldn't do much detail on his face. I tried to match his clothing in the pic we took of him. (I'm not good at clothing! )

DrakonianDanceR - I don't know about it being Eastern or Western, I just liked how it turned out. The boy, Kevin, likes firery dragons and I was using some pics I had of some statutes and just kind of mingled everything together.

I have noticed though that I don't try to put too many horns in the piece. Probably because they start making the creature look mean. I know they aren't cute and cuddly, but that improvement will come in time.

Well, I'm glad you both liked the sketch. Here is the colorized piece.

"Kevin and his Friends"

Oh, I forgot to add, I colored this with colored pencils and the background with chalk and colored pencils.

I'd love to see the expression on his face when he sees it! I think he's just going to love it. Very nice work on the dragon scales there. And the horse, like all your others, is very nicely done.

Ah, that coloured version is really nice.  I know the lad will just love it.

As for the Dragon type, I understand where you're coming from.  You say Kevin likes fiery Dragons - well that is shown in your picture by the western influences, such as the body structure.  As for the horns, westerns tend to be more horny (not in that way) the easterns - though it can sometimes be the reverse that is true.  I guess they can make a Dragon look 'mean' as you put it, but I believe they can also make a Dragon look 'cool'.  As I've said before, there aren't any really strict rules to drawing Dragons for fun, and so whatever you choose to do cannot really be wrong.

Good work as always.

To Sumarra - We are taking the camera so we, hopefully, will get his expression on camera.

Thank you for your complements. I keep trying to improve. One of the pics of dragons I was looking at had the scales on it and I tried making some. I messed up on the front paw closest to the veiwer but I don't think he will notice. I think it gives the dragon 'character'! (LOL)

To DrakonianDanceR - Thank you too for your compliments. I am still trying to figure out how 'I' want to draw dragons on a regular basis so I will probably produce several mixed 'breeds', so to speak, before I figure something out. To make it seem fiery, I added the red feathering I saw on one of the photos I was looking at.

I'm bringing this thread back up, because you didn't tell us what happened when, and if, you gave the lad his picture.  I know that I'd like to know about it, as it was a very good picture you created for him.  Care to share?

(giggles) Oh, sorry about that. Yes, we did give him the pic, all framed and wrapped. He was really surprised when he took the wrapping off. The only thing he did suspect was that I drew something for him.

His mother was very surprised and elated. I think a little more than the boy was. The boy was shy though.

He had problems imagining himself as the one on the pegasus though. A new concept for him. Overall, he really loved it. We saw him a couple days later and he told us it was hanging on his bedroom wall.

We were very happy.

Ah, I'm happy to hear that you gave him the picture.  I was a little worried that you were unable to, for whatever reasons.  It's good that he liked the picture, even if it was hard for him to understand.  It's also good that his mother was happy with it, too.  I'm glad it all worked out okay.

We are too. There wasn't any worry for us that we would not be able to give it to him. We are happy with the results.

Thank you for asking.

Did you manage to get a picture of him opening it?
