Clean Meat without killing animals.
« on: August 23, 2018, 01:26:40 pm »
This is close to science fiction, but it's happening. People are creating
real meat without needing to slaughter animals. Not a vegetable
substitute, but the real thing.

Most of us who like eating meat may not consider how it ends up on
our plate, but we should. Animals are abused to make them more
tasty. Abused to make them so large they can't hardly walk.

We pump them full of antibiotics, and hormones. Much of which
can be dangerous to our own health.

Slaughter houses and foo processors have gotten laws passed to make
it illegal to even take pictures of how animals are treated prior to market.
Even to report how animals are slaughtered. They fear regulations that
would cost them profits. They don't want the public to see the animal
carcasses when they are bloody and even covered with filth. They
don't want the public to see or hear how food animals suffer.

Much of our meat contains bits of feces by the time it
leaves food processors. This is why we see recalls of meat
when people get sick. If we don't cook the food well it can
make us sick.

Clean meat contains none of the bacteria or hormones. None
of the bad parts of animals that can get mixed in with animal
processing

Currently Clean Meat is in development. The costs are too high
at this time. about 1000 dollars a pound, but coming down fast.
They are even making custom real leather that can match any
variety of animal skin. Even some that never existed.

Here is a link to a video that can explain the process.

Eventually at some point in the future as the Earth's population continues to grow to 8 billion, 9 billion, 10 billion , and more..........there will be shortages of various food and food products. And we will have to create more "substitutes" in order to replace the "real" things. Things like tofu based food items, soy based food items, algae based food items, and even insects used in food items. Insects might seem gross, but various types do have a lot of protein in them. ;)  And as more "real" foods get scarce as time goes by because of high demand, the prices for real food items will get more expensive. Try to imagine a 14oz. steak at $15 or more dollars.  :o

But until those days come, I'm a carnivore and I want my REAL meat! Bacon, Pork chops, Steak, Tuna, etc., etc.  :goldbloody:

The clean meat may be a way for space travelers to have a flavorful protien option.
And you could even feed it to your space cat.

I wonder how far away the higher prices are... feels like they are here now... :'(

I thought it was about that already :p

Also, if this is lab grown meat you are referring to then how does this differ from lab genetically modified plants?

Cloned animal cells grow in matrix of support chemicals and aggregate into solid material.
No consciousness involved, but should be biologically similar product.

I bet it will be like current meat byproduct foods that have no discernable grain structure to them.  Like sausages, chicken nuggets, etc.
Essentially a vat of fluffy protien goo that gets drained and pressed is what I imagine.
If nuclear reactor makes power, and power drives leds, heaters, mixers, pumps, presses etc, then you have space farmed beef on a spaceship.

Wonder what the waste byproduct of this type of meat production would be? Prions?
Aka mad cow, scrapie, etc..

I read a book on the subject of Clean Meat. It's actually real meat. It's
grown like real meat. Only difference it's not taken from a live animal.

It's grown without bacteria, drugs, or hormones. None of the bad parts of a
animal that can find it's way into meat with slaughter.

As Kobuk said our planet has a growing populations that will outrun our
ability to feed them. The only reason we can feed 8 billion is the fact we
have greatly increased the yields of plants. Animals grown for food use 8 calories
for every 1 calorie we get from them in food. Chickens and Turkeys fair better
but still much less efficient than using plants for food. Clean meat is a good
way to get rid of the need to feed the live part of growing meat. This
would save us 10['s of thousands of acres we use to grow animal food.
Also live animals produce many thousands of tons of methane and carbon
dioxide.  Which ads to global warming.

Humans like to eat meat. Many don't like plant substitutes. So this is a good
way to produce real meat without causing animal suffering. Egg, and milk
products can be grown as well. Currently Chickens are held in cages so
small they can't even spread their wings. Grown so big their legs can barely
hold them up.

Some might say a lot of people will loose their jobs, but this process will
require a large labor force. They just need a bit of training for the different
kinds of jobs.

As animal lovers we should support anything that removes the human
needs that causes the pain and suffering of animals.

Once it is proven as safe as regular meat, or safer as you point out, there should be no turning back.
If societies see that the yeid is high, cost is okay, no animal suffering, no or little waste, and it smells, tastes, feels the same, we will have no real reason to eat live animals anymore.

So then, what do we do with the animals we have as food?
Let them die off?
Or should we keep a small percentage alive as a backup up food source?

Well if people accept Clean meats and other foods produced that replace the need
for live food animals. There would just be less and less need to replace them in the 10's of thousasnds as we do now. Some cultures wouldn't change anyway. I am
sure some farmers would still raise them for show and pets. It's likely science
will be able to revive species lost to time in the not too distant future. All they
will need is a good strand of DNA. We may see woolly mammoths in the future
since their bodies are found frozen in the Siberian tundra.

Also it will take time to custom make ribs and T bone steaks from scratch.

It's an exciting concept, and personally I wound try some. For me,  I love meat,  but there are times I am reminded of the conditions that the animals go though. It's been a love hate relationship with meat. Also with this technique, we can pick and choose exotic meats, tiger, bat, grizzly, human, and it not be an issue, sort of. It's just meat, not meat with a past.

I wonder if NASA or similar are funding it for the Orion mission etc...? Manned missions that last several years could benefit from this tech. Mars  "farm" raised chicken! Makes you feel more at home.  :D

It was research by NASA that gave innovators the idea
to persue Clean Meat.

NASA unfortunately dropped the idea over growing plants
instead. I have a hunch they are rethinking it now. It's the only
viable way to have a ham sandwich or chicken nuggets on Mars..

I guess I missed the NASA link.  But it makes sense!
I am sure that many people would get sick of plants only.  Also we are omnivores.  Many of us may need (?) meat after a while.
Clean meat is neat!
 :D
For dinner, roast humanoid with fava beans and a nice Chianti. Its okay, its clean meat, really I promise!

I don't have a link as I got most of my info out of the book I read about Clean Meat.
The best think I like about Clean Meat is it is free of bacteria and other nasty
things biology produces in a living animal.  That and doing away with  the abuse of
animals for food.
