how do you practice drawing
« on: May 24, 2012, 10:58:27 pm »
So I'm trying to get more in tune with my artistic side mostly through drawing (and playing music but that's another thread) but every time I jump into drawing I don't know where to start. As a furry I enjoy drawing anthros but I truely have no idea what I'm doing (I've never been able to draw well) I've looked up tutorials etc. But I feel like there to specific. I really want to avoid copying someone elses style for id like my own to develop but that can't happen til I learn the basics so I'm curious are there any ways of practice or any exercise you have found helpful.

i dont know of any practice methods because I have never practiced really. I have practiced eyes a little, i just drew a bunch of eyes on a page, no other things, just the eyes. I assume if you did that, like just drew hands or a head several times, that could be good practice for individual parts.

Perhaps you could still follow tutorials, just to get an idea of the structure of certain drawings. After getting pretty proficient at drawing something, maybe change some things around depending on what you like. I'm just throwing ideas out there, but one thing you should definitely do (whether it be tutorials or drawing from real life or memory) is draw.  I know that's obvious, but even if you are deriving from the style of others, that's just a way to learn. If something in a tutorial is too specific, change it up and see how it looks.

The way I practice is just drawing. Refining the way I
draw hands,  paws, noses,  eyes, ect.  Working on
details, and body proportions.

Work on things you find difficult to draw. It will
pay dividends in the future.

It's all part of the learning process.. You will find
drawing will become more intuitive as time passes.

You will find yourself looking at the world around you
in more detail. With the eyes of a artist so to speak.

Draw every day, and draw what you like best. All
work and study isn't any fun.

But no matter how long you draw you will be learning, and
improving.

Finally show your drawings to others as each person
sees the art with a different perspective.

Keep up the good work.
