Anyone know of a good mic
« on: January 09, 2004, 09:11:59 am »
I have several original pieces written for sax, and now I just need a good way to get them on my computer, without sound degredation(sp?) Anyway, I would prefer a bell mounted mic, but whatever works *shrugs*  '<img'>

Hmm, as you probably know, sound degradation is unpleasant but a fact of life for getting music onto computer (unless you want to spend huowge amounts of money). Assuming it's alto sax you're going to need something that's good at high register stuff (but you'll know the specifics of that, bearing in mind a concert A is 440Hz).

If I were you I'd first try my local music shop and have an ask, you'll quite often find even in a small shop it'll be run by slightly mad enthusiasts who'll know a worryingly large amount  '<img'>

Thanks. It will mostly be for alto, although I may ocassionally decide to bring the school's tenor home. I play tenor for jazz, so I am more comfortable with it when I play jazz, yet alto I like better for classical and...well, everything else.  '<img'>

Well, the obvious call there is how much you are willing to spend. SD makes a great clip on mic for sax players, and they work awesome (have used them before with bands I worked sound with) http://www.bill-lewington.com/sdsys.htm If you get a standard mic with XLR to use an adapter with, be careful that it does not need phantom power however, as you won't get it to work unless you introduce the needed 48v into the system...which I highly do NOT recommend. Also, AudioTechnica has a nice one, however the sound response is nowhere near as good as the SD. If you want to try a standard mic, then try the SM-57 mic http://www.shure.com/microphones/models/sm57.asp mounted on a stand approx. 6-10 inches away from the bell. We used these mics in the jazz band I belonged to for our sax's and trumpets with great results. Nope, never played a note...always ran sound  '<img'>

With my budget right now, Ill probably go with the SM57. Does anyone know if I need any extra equipment than what is included to record straight to PC?

You might try a CAD24. Though one of the lower price vocal & std use mics. It does have a good warm qaulity that works with effects well too. I use em for the little of voice narration I do with some music. With a pitch shifter to add in cookie monster or demon type voice char. Does fine for acustic guitar has tried with it to. No power needed. Around $57 street price. Std 3 pin to 1/4 cable for plugging into regular mic preamps.
Enjoy living.

The SM57 will plug into a PC soundcard like this:

Mic-XLR cable-unbalanced mono 1/8 jack. *goes back to changing his Pro8HE headset from cordless setup to wired for karaoke at PPMP*

**EDIT**- Oh, and if ya need the cable or some pics of it, let me know, and I can set ya up.
