Looking for 3D game development software?
« on: February 27, 2012, 12:26:34 pm »
I found this 3d game software the other day. It's
a game engine called Unity 3d. Looks like a nice
deal for the amateur game designer or even the
professional.

http://unity3d.com/unity/

The software appears to be free for the pc/mac. You can
import from several 3d programs like Maya, 3dmax, and
Blender as well. Virtually drag and drop the files to the
engine software.

They sell various scene builds if you don't want
to make them yourself.

If you wish software to create games for mobile devices
they have a trial use period of 30 days for that.

Nothing like free software to play with.  :D

Thanks for the info, but… the full version of Unity 3D is $1,500 :o

And the free version has limited capabilities…
What caught my eye the most was that there’s no global lighting, LOD support, occlusion culling, and realtime shadows among other things that are missing in the free version.

I'm thinking that I’ll just stick with blender. ;)

I guess they are hoping it will attract commercial
interests by letting people play with a limited version.

At least the Unity software does support blender native files. That's
more than most 3d engines do.

I as you enjoy using Blender, and it has a good game engine
of it's own.

I've been using Unity since 2009, and while I'm no expert on it, I've had a ton of fun making stuff with it as a hobby, coupled with 3D modeling software of course. Great software, easy introduction for beginners or light hobbiests (like me) but also is able to do pro-level quality.
