Looking good, practice always helps, shading is somthing that can have many variables , a good tip to shading is to practice on "actual" objects, example:
place an object in front of you and shine a lamp or other light source (window, etc.) in one direction, observe hoe the light causes shadows and highlights, the shadows actually appear "black' or darker, and the light side is bright and colorful. try drawing the object (a good object is a small plushie or figure) and actually shading your picture in the shades like as you see the object. (a good tip is to place a white neutral background behind the object). and example of an object i done in this fasion is the statue of liberty i drew in my older "Lionus & Max" picture found in my 2002 art gallery. that statue was just a plastic 3 inch high model i placed in front of me with a lamp placed to the right of it. depending on the media you use, (pencils, ink, paint , watercolour, digital graphics, airbrush, etc) shading results can vary, it's somthing that practice will help with . keep up the good work *   '<img'>

Well i did some more shading and thought i would post it up. I keep an old shaded on so i see the difference i've made. I think it looks better but i still keep fiddling with it. I did this before reading the last reply so i have to try some actual observation soon. But here it is anyway

I like the highlights you added, SquirrelyRat. Yes, it does look better. It seems to have more 'life' now.

Don't feel bad about 'fiddling' with it a lot. I have done that too with a piece and I am sure so have other artists. It is just part of our learning experiences.

Tis ok. It happens. I deleted the last two for you.  '<img'>

I am looking over your pic and as for the character, you are getting better at giving them 'life'. He doesn't look 'flat'.  '<img'>

I am having troubles though telling that the light is coming from the front and nothing shadowing to show that.

Let me do something up and show you what I am talking about. That always helps me when I can look at a visual of what someone is trying to describe to me.

Ok. Now I am not an expert on shading as I am still learning as well but am getting better with practice.

Here is a quick sketch I did and using the grey to black scale of markers colored it in.

Here is a larger view of the same image.

I hope this helps.

OK i'm still working on my body anatomy but can someone help in how to show depth in a char? Now this is my first attempt at a sitting down position. I drew this up real fast so you guys know what i mean. If i could get a few tips on how to do it that would be great so i can practice it more in many positions.

Ok. At first glance I see this character as backwards but that may just be me.

For me, I don't think there would be much back shoulder showing on the body where the arm is resting on the ground.

If you are making a 'chubby' little character the belly is fine but if not, bend your outline inwards instead of outwards.

The angle of the foot on the ground seems a little off from the position of the knee.

Finally, I don't think the leg that is flat would be that fore shortened at that angle.

Others most likely will respond with their views as well.

Other than those things I mentioned, it is looking good.

I know i know most of that. That was just a rough sketch i did, not really going to finish it but i'm just having trouble showing depth, and even looking myself in the mirror i have trouble drawing my arm "coming at me" (all my rough sketches look like that and i shape them as i go along)

Much better, SquirrelyRat!

I can see the improvement. Also, don't be afraid to darken even more. That will give more 'substance' I think to your character.

(giggles) Ok. Well, at least I was seeing what you had and I know what you mean about the final product being different from the original sketch.

I always resketch a piece that I am coloring and the resketch is NEVER exactly like the original sketch. I seem to see things when I go to resketch that I didn't see in the original sketch.

I'm glad the visual was of help! Sometimes the visuals help me more than the words too. That way I can see what the person is saying AND see it in the visual.

I agree with Kada-Ru.  Never settle on your first sketch, but I am such a tweaker when I first start putting a sketch to paper, I just work a drawing on the same piece of paper until I'm happy.  I tend to start light with a group of shapes then I add the details.  As I become more satisfied with the product, my confidence grows, and I start to build layers of pencil.  If you check out the piece I did for Firestorm Six, you can still see the erased pencil marks.  I may still go back in and revise this sketch.

I won't ink or color it until I'm pretty happy with it.

If you need any kind of anatomy help, I'm sure I can offer a few tips.  BTW, your progress is astounding.  Keep it up. ''

Well thanks alot you guys, but as i said that one before is just a rough sketch. I play around with my sketches on paper for a few hours, erasing and redrawing. erasing and redrawing. Then i scan and start on the computer. Sometimes i notice little things that i fix on the computer. But anyway i wanted to ask, how is my body structure coming along? is there any areas i need to REALLY work on. I mean i do practice the body alot everyday but something you guys see wrong with the poses i've done? I know Rethion (the bird one) is a little on the bad side cause it was my first try at large human like body in a while

Ok, Nick. I do understand you were showing us a first rough sketch. We were just letting you know that we do that too and then improve upon it like you said you do.

As for the bodies. From what I have seen here so far they are porportional. The only thing I can say is more shading for more roundness of the bodies.

With your Ethyn, I like your shading, and it shows a great improvement. I also noticed the lines which are curved which also helps in defining an object as having depth.

Your poses seem to be fine. As you progress with improvement the rest of your art will as well. Look at a lot of photos for reference. You can also look at yourself in a mirror for reference.

Now here is a question, how do i keep the roundness but yet not making the clothes too round. Like Ethyn's pants i wanted to be fairly str8.

Actually, Ethyn's pants look fine. You have the 'lines' from the strappings that give the pants a curve which adds the illusion that they are round.

Straight lengthwise? They look fine.

Also is there any place besides VCL that i can post my art on the web? I dont know how to make a website (although i wouldn't mind trying if i had help) So either one is good although i know it's not easy to just whip up a webpage of my own, least i dont think so.

You can apply for one on Furtopia if you wish. Must be at least 80% furry based.

As for your art piece. Look at the pants. See the strap that is holding the dagger? Now look at the straps on the other let. They are curved which gives the legs a rounded look. A more realistic look.

"Straight lengthwise"? I was talking about from waist to ankle. The pants look fine the way you have them done.

There are programs out there for helping those that don't know html to create webpages. I think there is also a topic on it.

"Web Design Support" though I'm not exactly sure if these will help. Looks more advanced.

I know there was a topic some where, and we may have to ask Benjamin if he can find it, where some one listed several programs that would help with creating webpages.

For me, I know that Netscape has one that can be used. I used to use Corel Word Perfect 10. (and earlier ones) As long as the program can "publish to html" you should be able to create a page with text and insert your pics etc and then have the program put it to html for you.
