Title: Furry Anime!
Post by: Richard Smith on April 24, 2003, 07:46:45 pm
As always, the topic says it all. I have a kid at my school who spends all his time downloading anime, which he then burns for me onto CD, so I'm looking for some good series. 'Good' meaning 'with at least one furry character' in most cases. So, I'm trying to compile a sort of list of furry or semi-furry anime to watch. So far I've seen these (all of which are good, in case any of you are in need of something to watch)

Inu-Yasha (Lotta animal-demon thingies)
Magical Nyan Nyan Taruto (Kitties!;)
Naruto (Fox-demon thingy)
Star Ocean EX (Well... it has Leon the cat-eared dude...)
Hack/Sign (Wierd cat-thingy)
Noir (One episode with a wierd cat thing)
Cowboy Beebop (Super-intelligent dog!;)
Flame of Recca (Erm... fight-refs with animal ears and tails...)
Princess Mononoke (Wolves... monkeys... boars...)

And that's about it... any help on other such series would be greatly appreciated.

Spirited Away has some anthro animal characters in it, plus an Eastern style dragon.

Dragon Ball Z? I'm no big fan of it but it has some anthro chars, non of which are featured, more like background chars. But they have cats, pandas, dogs, bears. Mostly the helpless people in the back ground.

Maybe not your sort of thing, but series such as 'Pokémon', 'Digimon', 'Monster Rancher', and even 'Flint the Time Detective' have a number of anthro creatures in them.  I'd recomend them all, apart from 'Flint the Time Detective', really.  Many dismiss these series as silly kids' programmes, but I personally think they're wonderful.

Some episodes of the different 'Tenchi' series, and at least one of the movies, feature an anthro lion who works as part of the space police.

Other than that, and the ones that have already been mentioned, I cannot think of any more.  On a related note, a while ago, I started collecting names of anime series and movies that feature Dragons in.  Due to my location, we don't get much anime here at all, and so the likelyness of me actually seeing any of them is slim.  Here's the list I got, anyway.

Dragon League
Dragon Drive
Dragon Century
Dragon Chronicle
Dragon Half
Dragon Pink
Dragon Rider
Spirited Away
Record of Lodess War
Dragonslayer
Dragonknight 4
Gokudo

Anime is really not something I am into, but I'm a big Miyazaki fan.

Here are some suggestions:

Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko- It's about some anthro-raccoon type critters that are native only to Japan.

My Neighbour, Totoro- It's populated by some really strange looking anthro beasties.

I hope this helps.

The Cat Returns features some really spiffy anthro cats.
The anime based on Vampire Saviour/Dark Stalkers has Felicia (cat woman) and Jon Talbain (werewolf) in it.
Angel Links has Duuz Delax Rex (alien species called Dragonite, scaly-type)
I know that there are many more, but I can't remember them all.

Actually, there's a big difference between Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.  On top of chibi Goku having a tail, Oolong and Puar also have significant roles.

You're right about DBZ though.  Oolong and Puar do make frequent appearances, but I have yet to see an episode in which one of them actually has a line or two.

Blah, can't believe I forgot these ones, they're all by Osamu Tezuka.

Kimba the White Lion ( white lion, lotsa african animals )
Leo the Lion ( Uh, yeah, same characters, but older )
The New Adventures of Kimba ( Uh... yeah... same again, but different stories. )
Vampire ( Werewolves... which kinda makes me wonder why he called it 'vampire' since there are none in the series. )
Bagi ( Cat-girl. This one's cool because it deals with the actual prospect of human and furry interaction, instead of just having the furries be 'there' for no apparent reason )

Yes! Tezuka was a pretty awesome guy, unfortunately most of his work hasn't been released over here, but if you can get a hold of any of his stuff I highly reccomend it.( note: The first 26 episodes of Kimba are now on DVD and can be bought in a boxed-set for around $60 )

Ranma 1/2!!! I can't belive nobody said that one! People get turned into animals and such with a splash of cold water...lol.

Sorcerer Hunters...when the main character, Carrot gets hit with magic, he turns into a huge bull/bear/were thingy....

Tokyo Mew Mew....all I know is that it has lots of catgirls!

Shamanic Princess...lots of magic...weird and twisted...the sidekick...a snooty ferret!

Tenchi Muyo....cabbits....need I say more?

Chobits... the main character is a robot...but looks like a catgirl...she always says "Chi?"...cute, amazing too...the ending is just...wow.
That's all I can think of that hasn't been named yet ;)

I'm not sure 'Biker Mice from Mars' and 'Bucky O'Hare' are actually anime, though they are cartoons with anthro animals in.  If we're now moving on to western animation, I'll think of a few more.  'Extreme Dinosaurs' was a very good one.  There was also 'Street Sharks', too.

And as 'Thundercats' has been mentioned more than once now, did it actually feature any anthro cats in it?  It's been a good few years since I've seen it, but I had thought the characters were just humans, possibly with cat ears, or whiskers.

However, there was that one comic-relief guy, who I forgot the name of, who was more animalistic than the others... and yeah, they were basically human with fur and feline ears, etc.

You mean Snarf?
I didn't watch the show all that much, but if there's one thing that got engrained in my mind, it was that character's name, since he'd say it allll the time. I found it quite irritating. ;)

Well... Actually, there used to be a website called Shadowlord Inc. that had tons of AVIs of the shapeshifting variety, (still does, except now it just shows you all the clips they have instead of letting you download them).  Clips from Mon Colle Knights, La Blue Girl and Midnight Panther just happened to be among them.

Can't remember the URL of the website, but you could probably just do a google search for shadowlord if interested.  Just don't bother voting for the avi of the week; it hasn't been updated in months.  :p

I don't consider most anime with anthro-type characters to be 'furry anime', but I guess that's as close as we're gonna get.

La Blue Girl has a werewolf in it?! Woot! I shall have to find it. :D

As for my picks:

Wild Knights Gulkeeva/Gulkeeba - Anthro wolf, gorilla, and hawk. And I think a...panther. Or some big cat. I can't remember. You can't find it over in the states, though. And there's very little info online. I don't even know alot about it, despite having sene (my friend owns all 26 eps) it all. But it's all in raw Japanese. :P It's  great fun, even if you can't figure out what's going on. Lots of cute scenes, but it's not a 'cute' anime. It's got the whole 'teaming up with a badass animal sidekick and beating villans down' thing going on. Very cool if you can get ahold of it.

Wolf's Rain - Shapeshifting, but it's SO good. If you haven't seen it, SEE IT. It's werewolf themed, and by the people who did Cowboy Bebop. It's veryvery good.

Tokyo Mew Mew - I haven't actually seen it yet, but I've read up on some of it. I guess the girls in it shift into different animals and stuff.

Animal Magnetism - It's actually a computer game, but there was a movie put out. It's very cute. Go to http://www.gainax.co.jp/soft/animag/index-e.html for more info.

Full Moon wo Sagashite(sp?) - About a little girl who wantes to be a J-Pop idol, but she's going to die with the year. Shinigami come to escort her soul over too early. The Shinigami are shown as a cute bunny-girl and an adorable cat-guy. It's very cute. I like it even for a theme I don't get into that often.

That's about all I can think of. o_o
