Happy news for this fur
« on: June 19, 2003, 09:54:26 am »
Well I guess this isn't really furry, but I thought I'd share my good news with everyone.

Monday I handed in my resignation for the company I currently work for, and July 7th I start a new job with better benefits and 10 more days of vacation time.

My old job had no work that was local, and I was being asked to take an assignment that was 100% travel to Detriot for the next six months.  It would have been difficult for me to work on my music and writing with that type of work schedule.  The new job keeps my local.

It's funny, I wasn't actively hunting for a new job.  I got angry at work one day 3 or 4 months ago and went out to a nearby Starbucks to blow off some steam.  While I was there, I ran into someone who supervised me for a couple of months about 8 years ago.  We exchanged business cards, and several months later I'm going to be working in the division he runs.  The interview was the easiest I ever had.  It basically was, "well, what would you like to do? .... "Hey, we got a position open that fits that exactly.  If we offer you a job are you going to take it?  ...  Good, I'll have HR contact you and start negotiations."

I'm leaving my current job on good terms, and been told I can come back.  Since I didn't have any active assignments, they told me I can stay home for the next two weeks as long as I remain available by phone.

A very happy Drake '<img'>

Cool! Thats perhaps one of the smoothest job transfers I've seen. My dad has gone through a few rough ones, which I won't go into here, and so I can see the signifigance if it all.

Congrats ^_^

That is great my friend. Very smooth transition and the ability to return on good terms if the need arises.

Wow, that's really great! It's pretty lucky that you have the option of returning if needed. Hopefully you like your new job much more than your old.

My dad recently lost his job, at a place he had ben vorking for over 15 years. He diddnt recive any extra time to find a new one or anything...they just said get out of here basically. I think that is pretty rediclous. He was dooing predigm(sp?)(he is a lawyer) work for a bit when he was unemployed but he found a new job and he likes it more then his old one, plus its much closer to our house, so i guess things turned out alright.

Hmmm.. Your situation was perty lucky too.

Me dad was pretty much laid off without pay (computer techie), and was out of a job for about a month. As you can imagine plenty of bills started piling up and we had to 'sue' the place that laid him off inorder to get somewhere. We won, but we were the last ones to do it (yes others got it to). And the bad part is, they replaced those they laid of for a lower pay. Meanie corporations.

That's good news, yeah. It's always good to feel needed, especially at one's workplace.
Things have been turning around for me lately, as well. The past month has been going quite nicely, in particular. Maybe things are finally on the move toward something better for me. '<img'>

Thanks everyone.

Sorry to hear about what happenned to your fathers Jadnar and Grasper.  Reston VA is the heart of the telecommunications industry, and with all the trouble Worldcom, AOL, etc.. have had, I know too many people who lost their jobs and are still looking. Many of these people cling to the hope of finding a similar job, but from what I see, these jobs are gone forever.

Glad to hear things are getting better for you also Benjamin. I hope things go in the direction you want them to.

Congratulations, Drake Blackpaw!

I learned a long time ago when I worked for others that my job security was never solid. After a spell, I started looking at starting my own business with my own hours etc. I raised my son the same way. Work for himself and then he knows his job security. Though we both had to work for others for the time being, knowing we would be starting our own individual businesses, made working for others a bit easier.

I have a friend that I have known for over 30 years and at one point she was working for someone else and hated their pay and hours of work. I asked her if this was the type of business she enjoyed. She said yes. I asked her if she could do this type of business herself, self employment. She said yes. So, I asked her what was holding her back. She thought about it and a couple months later she had her own successful business doing what she loved without having to work for others. (giggles) She got so successful that she ended up turning away possible clients because she didn't have the time slots!

So, yes, I try to advocate when possible that people start their own businesses. I know for us, having our own business is a lot of hard work but we would rather be putting in all this hard work for our own business than for putting the money into someone else's pocket.

A lot of people don't think of starting their own business. But, the possibilities are out there.

Sorry for the long post. Just when I hear about those that have lost their jobs etc., I always think of the alternatives.  '<img'>

Small business is what truly drives the economy, anyways. It's very common in Canada, really.
I'd like to go into business for myself once I've got some more experience in the field of graphic design and have started to make a bit of a name for myself.

I agree with you kada-Ru.  I just wasn't ready to make that step yet.  I am helping my wife with a financial services business, and I am planning on saving my money for the next several years so I can leave the corporate world around five years from now and focus more on music and writing.

Though folks must know that even owning your own business is not an easy task. WS has put in many many physical hours with our business since we couldn't afford to hire someone else to do the work he did. There are times when it gets really frustrating but we do remember that in the end it will all be worth all the hard work, lack of sleep, and having to put EVERY penny into our own business. Nothing is more satisfying.

Not everyone is cut out to own their own business either. This is something one has to figure out for themselves.

Good luck on your ventures, Benjamin and Drake Blackpaw!

Thanks, Kada.
That business venture is still a long way off, anyways. ':p'
