Raptor Red
« on: September 22, 2018, 01:52:20 am »
When I was in Jr. High I did quite a lot of reading and there was one book that really stood out to me.

Robert Bakker's Raptor Red.
The book chronicles a year in the life of a large Utahraptor. Highly anthropmorphised in her behavior and actions the book is more of a chronicle of the raptor's inner thoughts, feelings and instincts.
It's a good book if you don't take it as strict scientific... anything. It's informed by Bakker's knowledge of the Utahraptor but it is a lot of speculation.

So has anyone here read this book and if so what did you think?

I never knew you were a rock hound!

It sounds interesting. The only book I've read that's anything like that would be Saint Peter's Wolf, by Michael Cadnum. It's similar, but that of a werewolf.

I know of a bloke who is doing a Disney style animation of Raptor Red. He's just finished up his character drafts and is working on some animation styles now. He posts his progress on a palaeontology FB group I run. It's looking good so far. Here's hoping he doesn't run into any legal issues.

I never knew you were a rock hound!

Got my BSc in palaeontology and evolution in 2012. Not currently active in the field due to the shortage of related jobs in this country, but I stay up to date on recent findings, help other palaeos with their papers (mostly data set work) and am one of the people who runs the aforementioned palaeo page. Not currently considering a masters or PhD due to life circumstances, but not ruling it out for the future.

EDIT: Just order myself a third-hand copy from Amazon for about £3. Should ship over within a month (no UK sellers had it in stock). Should actually give it a read after all I've heard about it.

It's a good book. I really enjoy it; even if it might not be 100% scientifically accurate it's still entertaining.

Well, Raptor Red came charging through my mail box yesterday!  Hey I didn't realize it had a motion type hologram on the cover!?
Neato!

SOOO... now to find the time to relax, unwind, read and enjoy that which is life as a beautiful dino-raptor. (I assumed she was a super model UtahRaptor, because I can.  And the name Raptor Red made me think of her wearing a red cocktail dress and dancing the fox trot.)

Loc, NO ONE has the same mental images as me.  And that's a good thing.
 ;)

My copy  was apparently never read,  just yellowed with time.
Cost about,  6 or 7 USD?

Okay, so I read it....
The author was able to take me to a prehistoric world, and I was terrified at times!
There was a lot of gore, heartbreak, exploration, introspection, and fun.

It is my feeling that the main character in Jurassic Park1 is like the author.  And to think that the author worked, lived, taught, only about 200 miles from me, and I have been past the exact area he lived(s) and worked many times.  Never knew.

If the early world was as he shows, I am SOOO glad we mammals rule the world now.
Its a little tamer now.  Just a little.
