The reason for the season.
« on: December 23, 2009, 09:08:39 am »
A holiday topic for debate. What do you feel is the true reason for the holiday season? Is it for the celebration of christ, hanukkah, or kwanza? Or is there more to it than the holidays alone? Is there actually something about this time that makes us want to be a little more nice to each other, or is it simply a nostalgia of holidays gone by?

What do you think is the reason behind this time of the year? I.E. people being extra nice to each other, that general warm and fuzzy feeling. etc.

I personally see it as no time any different from the rest of the year, with the sole exception that here in cali, the weather suddenly becomes nice and wonderful and cool, and for me, I suppose that the removal of my agitation with the weather is what helps, and it sticks around till about march....

You know, I love that tons of others are able to celebrate for religious reasons.  It's a chance for them to remember kindness.

For me, I feel like it's a great chance to get back together with family and just enjoy life.

Maybe that's what Christmas "used" to be, but it isn't anymore........at least not from my point of view since I work in retail. Seems commercialism, consumerism, and capitalism have run amok at Christmastime.  :P Xmas nowadays is all about the SELL!, SELL!, SELL! and the BUY!, BUY!, BUY!, and the GIMMIE!, GIMMIE!, GIMMIE! It's enough to make me sick.  :P

The old Christmas was probably deemed communist propaganda...  :D

Though I think it came out of the 'I must be a good capitalist because the communist are evil, and so I must make money, so I shall brainwash everyone into buying my stuff using whatever method possible!' *looks at this holiday involving gift giving*... >:D 'Can't give gifts without getting them in the first place!'

I find modern society in all of its consumerist silliness to be... well... rather ridiculous. But of course holiday seasons top the charts there, especially the ever-exploitable xmas gift-giving season.

I can't argue there Kobuk, I work in a used video game/DVD store and had work today, christmas eve, we were swamped with folk who were insane with anger that all the good games they wanted were either sold out or a few bucks more expensive thatn they expected.

I had one lady yell at me because her wii on layway came out a penny less than she anticipated. She was getting it for a penny less, one cent, and she had a yelling fit at me for it. She almost left without her recipt (Which gives her a 90 day warrenty). If I wasn't so damned nice I'd have let her walk out the door and chuck her recipt in the bin.

True comerciallism and capitalism run rampant at this time of the year and it's insane, but I still like to try and think that this season means more. That when the insanity of christmas is played out these rabid shoppers and consumers return to being all around nice folk....Or I'd like to believe that.

So true. Want to see someone's true personality or see the effects of unbridled consumerism? See how they act shopping on either Black Friday or Christmas Eve :P.

I am a very devout Christian To me scripture give me my motivation to celebrate Christmas.
"1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1-5,14

I do not waste my time or concern about commercialization or the so called  war on Christmas. frankly let call this war off. I am bothered by  interlace twards Christians. I do not want it come to a point I will be forced to wear a Yellow Cross.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never minded the hustle-and-bustle.  Most people do, I realize, but I can enjoy being in shops during the Christmas season.  The buzz around me just feels good (but, then again, I get a lot of my energy from what's going on around me, so it figures).

I can understand why a lot of people don't like how commercially focused Christmas has become, and I think the holiday might be better without it.  However, I love giving and receiving gifts.

I'll just try not to work in game stores during Christmas.  ;)

I really have never found that people are any kinder during the holiday season. For me, the mean-spirited nature of certain people just seems to be enhanced by the holiday season. I think, sometimes, the expectations of giving just exacerbate any problems a person has and then they take it out on others. I am sorry to sound so cynical, but that has been my experience. I know that when my aunt's boyfriend comes with her to visit on Christmas, he just tries to start arguments and insult the people in my family. I really worked hard to bite my tongue this year. He is someone who was born into privilege and has never lifted a finger to help someone else in his entire life, and then he feels that he needs to insult people like me who work hard to help their community. I mentioned how people can affect change and do something good just by taking small steps, mentioning how after I wrote an article that ran on the front page of our newspaper, people in the community came together to start up a homeless shelter. All he had to say is "how is it being funded," in a very defensive tone. He doesn't even live here. Apparently, if someone was not fortunate enough to be born into the family business, and if they have been laid off from a job, then that person is a free-loader. I really hope that there is a God, and that people will be judged based on the kindness they have shown others, but I have my doubts. There is no justice in this life, and as much as I hope for justice in the next, I don't count on it.
