Title: PM Inbox limit
Post by: Weisseman on June 25, 2014, 09:53:06 am
The Web Hosting company for this site has informed WhiteShepherd that our database is too big and needs to be reduced or face deletion. As such it has been decided that we will introduce a limit on the number of private messages that users can have in their inbox.

This limit has been set at 250.

If you have more than that in your inbox you will no longer be able to receive any messages, except from Admins, until it has been cleared out to under 250. If anyone attempts to send you a message they will get a message saying it has not been sent, so there won't even be a backlog of messages in that regard.

The outbox is not affected by this change, however if you are using the outbox please clear it out to help us reduce the size of our database. In the mean time we will be looking into other ways of reducing the size.

I appreciate this may be a hassle to some members but this is out of our hands for the most part. The database needs to be made smaller or we risk losing the site.

Well, this is certainly an eye opener.  :o This never used to be a problem when I was an Admin. I can only guess that the web hosting company changed policies or that they are having storage limits or something else.

Has the web hosting company given WS a "due date" so to speak on when PM's have to be cleared out? How long do we have to get this done? Days? Weeks?

The biggest problem is Furtopia has thousands of members. A ton of them don't come around anymore, so how do you clear their PM Inbox/Outboxes? God only knows how many PM's a member could have from 2003, 2005, etc., etc.

Eye opener indeed o.o

Well this is a shame.

Is it just the PM database that is too big, or the whole forums? O.o

The whole Database.

We lose access tomorrow so it's really important something gets done. As for inactive members we are working on it.

We're hoping we won't have to do large scale deletions before tomorrow. This thread will be updated as information becomes available.

Just deleted all of em, lot of memories there, for the best though!

Surely deleting PM's won't be enough then? O.o

They didn't give very long either did they? >:(

Now i'm worried :/

Clearing your PMs will help so much more immensely than suing them beyond the dawn of time. :)

I had over 65 pages of 25 messages per page, which means, over 1625 messages!!! That's not including the outbox, which I also deleted!

*Dies* x_x

Lots of memories there, I guess they really are "Memories" now! Sorry for having so many! I hope it helps! :D

I wish there was an option to automatically remove messages after a few days; I tend to just read them in the email, so I just never went to delete any until now (and I'm sure I'm not the only one doing that).  I can't seem to find any documentation indicating that SMF supports that functionality, though.

The whole Database.

That's pretty urgent. :o  I hope it get resolved without any trouble.

Done.

If there's anything else i can do to help, i'll do it.  ;)

EDIT: I just copied the RP i'm in in case something happens.  The word document is 442 pages long on the smallest font size.  I think i'm starting to understand why we're running out of room here.  x_x

PMs will not need to be deleted.  We are getting the DB moved tonight.

Just logged in. Things look a little "different".  Maybe it's just my imagination, but I'm seeing stuff we used to have on the old Invision Board forums long ago, but shouldn't have now. I'm not sure.

Yes, I can see that. But still, something seems "not right".

In the meantime though, we're missing our Furtopia banner at the top that Mylo created long ago.

There for me at the moment, probably because of my cache. However the absolute file paths in the forum are broken and need to be fixed. We are working on this.

Gotta tackle the big stuff (not losing the database) before addressing small details (getting a banner up).

For future note there is an option to send you an email when a PM is received that will contain a copy of the sent PM.

How odd. Have you check the spam folder, etc?

This. I noticed a few months back that I wasn't getting forum notification emails. I eventually checked my spam folder, and found they had all suddenly been filtering into there. If they're in there, you can mark them as not spam, and you'll start getting them in your inbox again.

Same here. I have not been getting email notifications for several months when somebody tries to PM me. I don't have a "spam folder", so there's nowhere for them to go.......if I even am getting them.

i get them, at one point all my email notifications vanished for months ( got lbeld as spam) so that was fixed, but another time i had that issue, then it just started working again not too recently ( i think)

also i am a little miffed that i didnt have to delete my pms in the end but i dont blame you guys, i understand.

wait so we didnt need to delete the pms right? cause now im confused. i just tried sending a pm to grey ( is inbox is full) to test it, and it says i cant send. so is it fixed or no? just trying to clear it up/

why not simply eliminate all content dated before Y in the archives?

Because that then defeats the object of archiving all of the data and posts.

Besides, it doesn't matter any more now that the hosting has changed. ^-^

The PM inbox limit is still in place, so if they haven't cleared space, they still will not be able to receive messages.

how will they know to clear space? I have a friend who comes on and we PM each other but he never bothers to read any threads, how can I tell him clear out his inbox when he has his email hidden and doesnt check the forum often?

As things change on the site they are announced so all users can see what has changed. We cannot be held responsible for users who do not read our announcements.

Um, does anyone know of a way to clear all the messages out of an inbox at once instead of page by page? We kinda have 4900 messages in our inbox that can be deleted, but we were just hoping there might be a faster way of deleting all of them.

Go to your messages and on the left sidebar under Preferences. Click Prune and set it to delete messages that are older than a certain number of days.

If anyone attempts to send you a message they will get a message saying it has not been sent

This wouldn't be a "user has blocked you" message would it? Because that's what I just got when I tried to PM someone.

Post by: Loc on July 06, 2014, 06:44:17 am
No, that is for a different thing - It is possible for people to block you from sending PMs to them at all. This will be a message saying that their inbox is full.
