I think it would be nice if Furtopia could notify us if we had (Unread) messages, like just up next to where it said messages it would say (1)
I know that it would take a while to code, I just think it would be nice  :-[

It already exists.
Go to the area where you edit your profile, click personal message options under the "modify profile" section, and tick the box saying "Show a popup when you receive new messages".

Or you can change your theme to give a box at the top that looks like this:

For that, under the profile editing section, choose "look and layout" and change your "current theme" to "Furtopia_info"
