Title: *pulls self out of a hat*
Post by: Arbutus on July 16, 2008, 10:23:52 pm
Oh me oh my, look at this! I logged onto the forums a few nights ago only to discover that the modfolk had named me a watcher! Thank you so much, all of you! (: I've been wanting to help out around here for a while, but until recently I was too stressed out to even handle it; now, though, I'm really looking forward to contributing a bit more to Furtopia beyond my frequent and occasionally deranged posts. ;)

I was also told that I now get to create my very own thread in this here subforum, and great Scott, who can pass up a chance like that??

About me! I am a rabbit. My name is Arbutus (pronounced ARE-byu-tus). In keeping with the Watership Down (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watership_down) universe, I am named after a small flower (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trailing_arbutus). I am the ringleader of the Lapine World Domination Front, a revolutionary organization which aims to support rabbits worldwide in shaking off their chains and revolting against the tyranny of the predatorial races. I also have a pretty awesome coat. 8)

On the RL side of things (lame), I am 21, male, a recent college graduate (from Williams College, up in the mountains of Massachusetts), and am currently employed writing questions for standardized tests, which is actually a pretty awesome job! Who knew? I hope to join the US Foreign Service one day and work for the State Department as a diplomat-- that's what I'm currently working towards. Things I love include history, linguistics, learning foreign languages, traveling, hiking, reading amazing books, and most importantly, music, around which my life sorta revolves. Oh, and rabbits. :orbunny:

That is me! Now it is your turn! Ask me questions-- about furry, RL, personality, friends, music, books, dreams, embarrassing and possibly incriminating stories, whatever. Anything is fair game!

I am the ringleader of the Lapine World Domination Front, a revolutionary organization which aims to support rabbits worldwide in shaking off their chains and revolting against the tyranny of the predatorial races.
I would like at this moment to remind predators everywhere that rabbits are far more tender, meatier, and flavorful than mere gamey, connective-tissue-filled rats.
(I am of course saying that in the spirit of self-preservation, and certainly not to throw you off the trail of the Great Rat Conspiracy, which clearly does not exist).

...Dibs on the coat when he's gone.

Afterthought:  Also dibs on the hat.

This is much more fun than that metal puddle thingy, in Blastdav's post ^^

Well, it did just spring out of a magical hat-- we have no idea where it came from or what powers it has. It could turn us all into chocolate, for all we know. It could turn me into a...

...into an Easter bunny...

...oh my.

Hey, I plan on keeping that coat until I die of old age. You can't have it yet! And no trying to get me eaten, either-- I'm a watcher, I can report you for that. ;)

In that event, I shall wreak mighty, emo-laden, drama-llama revenge in my LJ!
I shall spread vast lengthly tales full of flimsy half-truths garnered from situations that might have at one point had to do with a friend of a friend of someone who heard it from someone else on another forum, about how you reported me for NO GOOD REASON!
(I thank everyone in advance for their support)

And I still call dibs on your coat after the predators nom-nom you.
(No, Alexandre, I do not agree to the auction, as I called dibs, so nyah)

Neither did I until just now! But now all of a sudden I have a little wicker basket and infinity chocolate eggs, and I don't know what other conclusions to draw from my data. In the meantime, here, have an egg! *gives*

Hey Doc, did you get this thing from McMajik?
Title: Re: *pulls self out of a hat*
Post by: Arbutus on November 18, 2008, 02:44:41 pm
*suddenly pops out of the hat, soaking wet and with a carrot in each hand*

O hai! I forgot I had this thread. :-[ Hello my lovelies! Oh my, how long have you all been standing out here? Let me get some chairs for you...

*reaches back in and begins pulling out soaking wet armchairs one by one until everyone is seated, then pulls out a podium and stands behind it, clearing his throat*

Now. Thank you for all gathering here today. I'm sure you're all wondering if you're going to see any changes around this thread now that I've become a moderator on Furtopia. Now, I'm not legally allowed to give you all mod powers and let you go on a banning rampage-- you know, legal issues and all that, plus the forum software won't allow it. But I do want to reward you for, er, standing over there in the corner for the past five months. I am therefore happy to announce that I will totally be giving out superhero powers to anyone who wants them. ^_^

*pulls a magic wand out of his coat* Who's first?

*pops into the room* :o

I heard someone on a loud speaker, what's a goin' on in here? And why's everything wet?
Title: Re: *pulls self out of a hat*
Post by: Arbutus on November 18, 2008, 03:54:33 pm
All right then! You first!

*BRRRPTZAP*

Congratulations, Lawrence! You now have the power of levitation, extremely useful for escaping traffic jams and bonesawing your foes from above. :) Use it wisely!

Also, you are now soaking wet. Sorry about that, I just had to fish this wand out of the indoor pool. I hope it still works right....
Title: Re: *pulls self out of a hat*
Post by: Kay Alett on November 18, 2008, 06:17:10 pm
At work right now, but I'll gladly take some powers!  :D

EDIT: Off work now, so hit me when you're ready you magical lapine. :goldthpt:

Post by: Arbutus on November 19, 2008, 12:30:03 am
You got it, Kalo!

*BRRRPTZAPshzvcxxxxxxx*

:o Okay, that was a disturbing noise. Your superpower appears to be super-strength! You can lift any object, no matter how heavy, with but a single claw! Also very useful in traffic jams. ^_^

However, you also seem to have a prehensile monkey tail. That... was not supposed to happen. *shakes the wand vigorously to get all the water out* That's bad.
Title: Re: *pulls self out of a hat*
Post by: Kay Alett on November 19, 2008, 12:40:39 am
*streaches out his wings and smiles*
Thanks Arbutus.
*takes of into the sky and later returns with a massive carrot beaing a blue ribbing from some county fair*

Heres a thank you gift. :D And don't worry about tthe tail, it was getting kinda long anyway, I'm sure once Blastdavs cookies mingle with this new tail it'll start looking fluffy and wolfish again.
Title: Re: *pulls self out of a hat*

*hovers back to the ground after flying around.*
Hey, that was a lot of fun Dr. Arbutus! :D

*watches Kalo fly by with a monkey tail while having his muscles practically bust out of his shirt.* :o

Ok... I liked the magic, but the science experiments need to stop. :P

*eyes widen at the sight of Kaloyan's present*

Oh my gosh! It's a... it's a... IT'S AN AWARD WINNING CARROT! That's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!

The smell... it's so intoxicating... must resist... must....

I CAN'T DO IT!
*jumps on top of the giant carrot and begins nibbling with the fury of a thousand rabbits*
Title: Re: *pulls self out of a hat*
Post by: Arbutus on November 19, 2008, 10:05:28 pm
*After a solid half-hour of nomming, Arbutus finally looks up. Half of the giant carrot is gone, and his stomach looks like he's gained two hundred pounds.*

Oh! Alexandre! Didn't see you there! You want a superpower, you say? All right, let me just find my wand... here it is... okay, stand right there.

*BXXXXBXBTXHSHXSHSHHHHHHHHH*

:o Okay, that was a really bad noise. Is my wand supposed to be sparking like that? I don't think it is. Anyway, your superpower is...

...Al? Where did you go? Are you...

*gasp*

Great Scott, I've turned him into a newt!

All right, hold still, okay? *picks up wand* I'm going to try something....

*The wand explodes in a shower of party confetti. After a minute, the little squares of paper all flutter to the ground, leaving a stunned-looking platypus sitting in the middle of the floor.*

*mutters my own magic spell and the wand re-appears in my paw*

Uhm... any ideas on how we can change back, Kiboe? I don't think I can go to work like this tomorrow morning. They were already freaked out enough by the platypus thing.

In the meantime... *reaches into the magical hat and pulls out a giant barrel of Star Wars-themed Legos from his childhood*

Yeah....great plan with just three minor flaws sir.

1: Any members of staff who read this post will know your plan.
2: Kobuk is rather greedy and is likely to embezzle a great amount of your share for more Mnt Dew, or a new fursuit.
3: Any members of staff who read this post will know your plan.

Now I know I said that last one twice sir, but I felt it to be so extraordinarily massive a flaw that is had to be mentioned twice.

(I hope someone other than Weiss will get the reference.)

:o These allegations are shocking and baseless! First of all, the Bank of Furtopia should know full well that under statute 4649.21.b.5 concerning alternate dimensions, it has no grounds to tax or mortgage my personal carrot fields, which are located inside my magical hat and thus outside Furtopian jurisdictional limits. My magical hat is in fact its own independent nation, and bilateral trade agreements with Furtopia dictate that you owe our farmers $3,402,515.61 in sales tax on your copious purchases of green tea. I suggest you pay up. We have cannons. ^_^

And second of all, how on earth would I be able to pay a fine like that when you've been withholding my moderator's salary for the past four months?! >:( That's right, don't think I haven't noticed. You tell all the members that the staff doesn't get paid for the work they do, but really you just keep all our checks for yourself! I haven't seen a single Furtritian since the day I became a watcher! That's embezzlement! This is a travesty, and I will see justice done!

Oh hey! I didn't even realize it, but today's an anniversary of sorts. It's been four years, almost to the minute, since I first discovered Furtopia.

:)

Four years... that's really odd for me, considering that I don't even really like forums, lol. I've signed up for others in the past, but I was usually driven away after like ten posts by the unwelcoming attitude and hostile atmosphere I found. But with Furtopia... I was in college, up at 2 in the morning, not yet ready to get to bed, surfing furry sites out of boredom, and something about Furtopia just instantly clicked. That was four years ago. And well, here I still am, loving it more than ever. That's all the proof I need that there's something special about this place... and about you, the fuzzballs who make it what it is.

Here's to the next four years! *raises a glass of carrot juice in a toast*

CARROTS

*hugs the carrots*

Thank you so much, Black Foot! :) *nibbles on one* And they're fresh-picked too! I'll have to bring these down to my secret vault under the Furtopia Building, where I keep my stash of Carrots of Welcoming. But first, of course, I'll just skim a little off the top.... *slips about thirty carrots under his coat* ;)

Now, to answer Kalo's question:
You like to take pictures and post them in your LJ now and then, are you interested in photography as a career?

Nah, not really. I enjoy taking pictures a lot, but I'm not good enough to make any money off it. Also, I don't know how to use like half the functions on my camera, lol. It came with a 100-page manual, but I only got halfway through before I was like "THAT'S GOOD ENOUGH."

Actually, I mentioned this here a long long time ago, but what I really want to do with my life is to become an officer with the US Foreign Service. Foreign Service Officers are the ones who work directly under the US ambassadors and do most of the work in American embassies, issuing visas, reporting on political developments, dealing with crises, helping to shape America's foreign policy, and representing the United States abroad. It's incredibly tough to get into, but if I do, I'd be working in a different foreign capital every two years, learning languages, getting to really know places instead of just traveling there, and doing things that are actually important to the world. So that's the dream I'm working towards. :)

Title: Re: *pulls self out of a hat*

Haha, oh man... "systematic" as in you're going to go through them one by one? Bring it on. :D

I love exploring abandoned places. I guess you'd call it "urban exploration," if you know that term. I don't know if I can put into words what exactly fascinates me about them. Well, for one thing, I think there's something incredibly artistic about decaying buildings, because they're halfway between humanity and nature. But even more than that, I think that... that urban exploration is one of the only ways we can truly explore in this day and age. You know what I mean? There are no blank spots left on the map anymore. You can google the most obscure country on the face of the earth and find dozens of travelogues from people who have already been there and taken pictures. No place on earth remains untouched. Except... when I wander through an abandoned building, I can sort of regain the feeling that I am seeing something humans have never seen before.

That, and I love the artifacts you can find in those sorts of places. Old papers, little machine parts, giant boilers submerged in a flooded basement. I went to an abandoned insane asylum once, and there were old metal-frame beds and patient records and inmates' crayon pictures still hanging on the bulletin boards and holy christ it was very creepy to feel myself in the presence of these tortured people from the past. And then I met up with Blastdav and Whitefang later that same day and told them all about it. :D

These are still two of my favorite urban-exploration pictures. One is of a ship graveyard, the other is of a Gingerbread Castle.

Alexandre, I don't know what Calico is, so, uh, never fear. ;) Is it a ghost town for the tourists or something? I'd love to visit an actual, abandoned ghost town one day. We have one in New Jersey, sort of, but it's right below an interstate and all the buildings have been restored by the historical society to the way they once were. BOOO-RING

I love boots too, but they don't always have to be hiking boots, am I correct in assuming this has something to do with your inquisitive nature regarding abandoned places?

Oh man, this has been open in a browser window for like a week and I forgot to respond. :'(

Quote
am I correct in assuming this has something to do with your inquisitive nature regarding abandoned places?

Sort of. It's more like, I always wear hiking boots wherever I go, because wherever I go, I somehow manage to get myself into situations where hiking boots are necessary. :D I've been known to do things like go out for a gallon of milk and end up in the middle of the woods searching for forgotten historical cemeteries, or to go out for lunch at work and come back with grass-stained khakis and mud all over my dress shoes. Hiking boots are... just something I find to be valuable, lol.

Here in NJ, we voted last Tuesday in the primaries for the governor's race. So instead of driving to my polling place, I decided to put on my hiking boots and walk there via the shortest route possible, i.e. bushwhacking through the woods behind my house. :D It was a lot of fun, even though it ended up pouring. (a lot.)

Ask me some more questions, people! ^_^

Eeee, I just had to stop myself from squeeing in the middle of a public library! That's so cute! :) (: :) (: :) I love baby rabbits!!! (Human babies annoy me.)

Oh man, how did I never answer your question about languages up there? I apologize for that.

Let's see, my English is pretty good.
Other than that, I've probably reached my most advanced level with Russian, though I was never able to speak it confidently, to be honest. Too many vocabulary issues, and it doesn't help that I've forgotten a lot of my vocab at this point. :P I studied it for two years in college, though, and then spent a semester in St. Petersburg.
At one time, I could also speak Czech at like a high-beginner low-intermediate level or something, but I was only in Prague for a semester so I never got the chance to dive into it really deeply. I think I could still hold a tremendously awkward conversation, though.
As for Spanish, I used to take it in high school, and I got pretty good at it, but I've since forgotten a TON. I can still muddle through magazines and stuff, but if I try to actually speak it it comes out as Russian. Not even kidding. :D

And if you want a REALLY loose definition of "partially learn," you can throw German, Dutch, and Slovak on the list too. :P And I have courses for about five other languages on my bookshelf that, I swear, I will get around to one day.

Oh man, how did I never answer your question about languages up there? I apologize for that.

No biggie. I get sidetracked all the time with, well life, among other things.

Yeah, apparently we have a nest under one of those bushes in the front garden.  There's 4 babies. That day they were just sitting out in the yard, chilling. That's the only one that let me get near it with the camera. I think it got used to my presence, and it eventually let me get the camera just inches from it.

Then tonight, we looked out front and saw the mother out there. Then two of the babies came out, and started nursing. It was quite a sight.

German is the only other language I know. Finished my minor in it freshman year. Unfortunately, haven't used it much since.  I remember most of the vocab, but some of the little grammar rules get me.  I even got to go over there for 3 weeks right after high school.

But our German professor in college had learned like 8 languages, and is basically fluent in all of them. And I think he was working on like 3 more...

Hey Kruzer! Well, you've seen the pictures I shared up above, and you saw my other pic in front of the turnpike tunnel, right? :) I don't know if I've actually uploaded pics from my other adventures. Oh no wait, I take it back - I posted on Furtopia once about my trip to an abandoned viaduct (http://forums.furtopia.org/index.php/topic,29973.msg605265.html#msg605265)!

I'm sure there's some amazing urban exploration to be done in Philly... lots of disused factories in the blighted old industrial neighborhoods north of here. But honestly, I haven't worked up the will to check them out it yet. The idea of exploring abandoned buildings somehow isn't as compelling when you have to worry about running across crackheads and crazy people. :(

If I do have any adventures soon, though, I'll definitely tell you about them!

Wow that viaduct is just amazing! Nothing like that or the tunnel you posted before exists in Australia.

Have you considered blogging your adventures? One of my acquaintances runs this blog (http://perth6000.blogspot.com) if you want some ideas. As you can see, our abandoned sites are far more tame than what you'd find in the US. Land values are very high in aus.

i'm sure i don't need to tell you to always keep as safe as possible and take a few precautions when exploring. Oh an also, are you are a fan of commie / public housing tenements?

Have a good weekend, dear bunny.

I love baby rabbits!!! (Human babies annoy me.)
^^ I feel the same way about wolf puppies (and human babies) respectively. I'd be a bad parent... If I was a real wolf/'adoptive parent' for some puppies, I'd spoil my little fuzzballs silly, and on the other side I would probably get annoyed all the time at human kids...

And on the subject of urban exploration, there is very little to do in my area (we're a quite suburb with very few unused structures (the only unused one is a little shack that sank into the dirt, and it's behind a fence on someone's property, as well as an old farmhouse that has been reduced to a bunch of bricks tilled into the soil)... BORING!)
However, in oregon, across from the entry to a wolf sanctuary I visited, they had a neat old abandoned gas station and house + garage ^^

I am going to go ahead and challenge that statement. :D I don't know enough about Australia to know whether you let your city cores decay the same way we did in the mid-twentieth century. But one thing I do know is that you folks do a whole lot of mining. How many abandoned mines are out there in the desert?(*) How much disused railroad infrastructure? How many company ghost towns? Even if you didn't have any of that, the abandoned hospitals and stuff in that Perth 6000 blog are nothing to sneeze at... and Sydney and Melbourne are older than many American cities.

(*) note: don't go inside abandoned mines, kids

I do write about my exploits occasionally on Livejournal (link in sig)... although not too often. I prefer to tantalize people by providing them with cryptic one-sentence summaries of what was done, and then watch everybody freak out and ask for details. :D

Also, the fact that these places are abandoned is sort of why this is a bad part of town. ;) Hand in hand.

Yeah, I was probably bieng a little harsh on what we've got here. Most of Perths inner city has been gentrified and we've never been a manufacturing city. As you pointed out, mining and energy are king here in the west. No doubt there are plenty of unused mines and historical sites but you'd need a customised four wheel drive to get out there. I probably need to do some more exploring over in sydney and melbourne.

Until then, I'll muster up the courage to pay this beast a visit.

Still not sure how to answer that. ;) From political and theoretical standpoints, I'm almost never in favor. If they're occupied, they sorta scare me. If they're abandoned... yes please. (: I've never been inside one, though.

lol- I suddenly remembered why your name was so familiar! (I remember you said it was from a plant)

The Arbutus genus: strawberry trees and other related plants!
I have an A.Unedo (the actual strawberry tree with edible fruit, not decorative)

I'll see if I can get a pic with a rabbit in the background...^^

Close... but not quite. ;) There's more than one kind of arbutus, and I named myself after this sort:

(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fd/Trailing_arbutus_2006.jpg/180px-Trailing_arbutus_2006.jpg) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trailing_arbutus)

The trailing arbutus, also known as the mayflower. My fursona started out as a character in a role-playing game based on the book Watership Down, in which nearly all the rabbits are named after plants. I spent a while flipping through a flower field guide, searching for the perfect name for this character I had created, and I found this tiny, pale pink, fragile flower that seemed to embody a lot of my character's attributes - the trailing arbutus. And something about the name just felt... instantly right. And still does.

Yep, because you seem to always be on the trail. And of course, let's not forget that 'Mayflower' is the name of the pilgrims boat whne they came to America.

Seems always to be a fitting name for those who wander.

Hey, Arbutus! Random question but are you a grey bunny, white bunny or brown bunny? I never could tell, your avatar and pixel are completely different colours XD

I'm not surprised that people are confused about this, because I still... haven't really decided. :D I started out with brownish-gray fur (normal wild rabbit color), but then I started thinking I wanted to switch to a grayish-brown, with an off-white underbelly. Unfortunately, I came to the horrific realization that that color scheme would make me look like Bugs Bunny. x_x So I became suddenly less enthused about it, and I still haven't really figured out what I want to be.

I don't know. I guess since I'm not interested in fursuiting and I don't commission a whole lot of art, I never felt too much pressure to codify my fursona.
Title: Re: *pulls self out of a hat*

I never gave much thought to what color I am either. I've always pictured myself as brown almost by default because the classic teddy bear is usually brown. Like you I'm not really interested in fursuits and when I do draw my fursona it's usually just a doodle in a notebook never colored in so I never really needed to give it much thought.

yay for bunnies :3 Just the description of your love for lapines makes me want to send you one of the bunnies that was born last night (Halloween oddly enough). I have a serious question for you though..Me being an avid and voracious reader coupled with my sheer enjoyment of the watership down books I was wondering if you could give me a list of all the books in the series since I've only read two. I'm at least hoping there's more than that. That aside I have another question you might find interesting..Have you ever seen the animated movie Watership Down? I quite enjoyed it myself and it was very well done if you ask me.

It's actually not a series - there's only one "main" Watership Down book (and what a book it is!) The other book, Tales from Watership Down, wasn't a true sequel; it was really more like three disconnected groups of stories set in the WD universe. It was actually written about 25 years after Watership Down, which explains why it has so many more strong doe characters than the original! Unfortunately, it wasn't received too well (mostly because it, well, wasn't as good), and I actually think it's gone out of print in Britain since it was first published.

Why, of course I have. (: I loved that movie... I've probably watched it about ten or fifteen times (which is many fewer than the number of times I've read the book). I also thought it was really well done, although it suffers a lot in the first half due to the fact that they were trying to pack a 500-page book into only 90 minutes of animation. But the second half of the movie is everything I could ask for!

Now, have you ever heard of the Watership Down TV series, I wonder? ;)

Fun fact about Arbutus: I used to run a somewhat extensive Watership Down fansite back when I was in high school! It focused mainly on the book, but it also had content about TFWD, the movie, and WD role-playing games. This was back when Geocities was the most awesome thing since sliced bread, so you can only imagine how terrible it looked. :D

It was a nightmare that just goes to show how much I enjoyed that series without being in the fandom.

Haha, I admire your dedication. I really do. :D I don't know where or when you embarked on your search, but I can tell you that the TV series only aired in the UK and Canada, and that it only lasted for three seasons (1999-2001). So, er, maybe that was part of why you couldn't find it. ;) I've never actually seen it myself.

I think they might sell DVDs of the TV show on Amazon... or at least they did at one point, which suggests that they would be on Ebay now. I don't know if you're that interested, but there you go!

Oh hey, will you look at that. It's November 24th, 2009, my sixth furry anniversary! :)

Yes, it was six long years ago today that I woke up in bed and discovered that, while I slept, brown fur had grown in all over my body, a muzzle had pushed out from my face, and a pair of very long ears had sprouted from the top of my head! That was a very strange experience, let me tell you. It took me a while to figure out how to balance on my new digitigrade legs, but once I got the hang of it, I spent the next half-hour jumping for joy... until I realized that I would have to leave my bedroom sometime. It was one thing to suddenly turn into the animal you'd always wished to be, but it was something quite different to have to face the human world as that animal. I didn't know what to do, and my stomach was tied in knots at the thought of going outside, so I did the only thing I could think of: I turned on my computer and started reading the news, trying to figure out if the same thing had happened to anyone else in the world. (This was before I had figured out how to type with claws, so I was basically pecking at the keyboard one claw at a time, and it took me a million years to get anywhere.) I was overjoyed to find out that no, I wasn't the only one - that there were thousands of people out there over the years who had gone through the same transformation I had! It wasn't a well-known phenomenon by any means - it seemed like the only folks who had heard of it back then were MTV and Vanity Fair, who had done sleazy exposes about the "furpiles" these people would have - but there were entire websites and forums devoted to the phenomenon, and the people who posted there were some of the friendliest folks I could ever hope to know.

Anyway, long story short, I started Googling around for stories about people who had transformed into the same kind of creature I had, and that was when I stumbled across the furry fandom. And I've been here ever since. :)

A couple of years later, I bought the coat. The end!

Aw, thats not entirely true Kobuk. While I'll admit model building isn't something I'm enthusiastic about, it's time consuming work and you really have to love it to enjoy it, I did like seeing the models you displayed. Many of them look as though they took a lot of effort especially in the paint work and that is something I can admire because it takes talent to do it, making the finished piece as much a fine work of art as any painting or photograph or song.

Arb, You don't have a fursuit, do you?

*starts to wonder what Arb would look like in a carrot suit*  :D

But seriously, if you wanted a  rabbit suit, then who would you go with to make the suit? How would it be designed and look?

Haha, oh god. Kobuk, I'm trying to answer your question, but I keep getting distracted by the giant carrot. :D It is so scary... and yet so delicious....

I don't have a fursuit, no. I'm not too interested in fursuiting, really. BUT, if I did get one, it would have to be as realistic as possible... which means it would have to come from Primal Visions. I also like Clockwork Creature's fursuits, but the only rabbit I've actually seen of theirs looked kind of weird and scary. It almost looked like Frank from Donnie Darko.

My favorite rabbit suit in the world is still Juniper.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3190656/
The head was made by Primal Visions, and the ears are detachable, which is clever. :)

Hmmmm I dunno Arbutus, that suit still looks too toony to me. Needs more realism.

So I finally saw Fantastic Mr. Fox a few nights ago! They were showing it in an old theater/live music venue downtown for only $3, so of course I had to go. The place was uncomfortably crowded, there was a big fat pole in the middle of my view, and the audio was so atrocious that I could barely hear what was being said half the time. And you better believe I walked out of there with the world's biggest smile on my face.

That movie was wonderful. It reminded me of why I'm here - in the furry fandom, I mean. After all these years, there's still something really, truly magical about anthro animals for me. They remind me of childhood. They transport me to a world of children's-book illustrations where my favorite animals walk and talk, where everything is sun-warmed and golden and the stories always have a happy end. As I've matured, I've come to appreciate a lot of other things about them too-- when you mix a human body with animal elements, or a human mind with animal instincts, the implications are endlessly surprising and delightful, and I love thinking about everything from anthro anatomy to how an anthro society would work. In the end, though, I think I love this fandom most because it keeps me in touch with that childhood magic.

Just a thought I wanted to share with you guys. Is it the same for you? Was it your childhood that brought you here?

(By the way, I want the Fantastic Mr. Fox soundtrack like nobody's business.) 8)

Ah, Fantastic Mr. Fox really was an incredible movie!  And indeed, without getting into too many details, I'd say that it was my childhood that brought me here.. anthropomorphic creatures in particular were preferred in film/cartoons, and I'd even go as far as to pretend to be an animal with one of my earliest friends!  So no doubt, perhaps that's why I felt so warm and fuzzy watching such a film in theaters for the first time since the early years.  It was pretty magical and as innocent as it gets.. for sure, it reminded me of why I'm a furry ultimately and helped spark a lot of interest in an otherwise very sporadic and dying relationship w/ the fandom.

But aye, really just dropped by to thank you w/ the registration issues that I was having, and also to say WOAH -  saw your last.fm and must say, you have a killer taste in music (Tom Waits[!!!!], Animal Collective, and Neutral Milk Hotel are some of my all-time favorites). :D  Nicee!

You're more than welcome, Whatwolf. I'm glad you made it here in the end! :)

Also, heh, thanks a lot for the comments about my music taste! Animal Collective and Tom Waits are two of my favorite artists, and I love finding other people who appreciate them too. :) What attracts you to them? And do you have a last.fm of your own?
Title: Re: *pulls self out of a hat*
Post by: whatwolf on March 22, 2010, 01:35:56 pm
Well, when it comes to Tom Waits.. where do I start?  Hm.. well, he's really just some sort of musical genius I think.  So many great tracks throughout so many albums, so many which make me feel certain ways.. sad, happy, inspired, etc.  And I guess I'm just one of those people that fell in love the lyrics and vocal style from the start.  Plus, he rocks the fedora unlike any other.  :)

As for Animal Collective, I'm also just a big fan of psychedelic music styles and they manage to make VERY psychedelic music whilst totally being a band of their own unique sound.  And they make me feel like a kid again!  Got into them kinda late, with the release of their album Strawberry Jam, but I've dug everything else that I've heard since.  Panda Bear is also pretty awesome, heard any of his stuff?  Bit more droney and spacey than AC, but definitely good.

And nah, no last.fm.. used to have one, got tired of accidentally obsessing over charts and also, my real-life friends found me and I am strange in the way that I try to keep a separation between online and offline communications.. so I dropped it, but will have to add you if my interest perks up again.  It's an excellent site!

Hello, all of Furtopia!

Just wanted to let you know that I'm going to be out of town-- way out of town-- for the next month. Tomorrow evening, I am hopping on a plane to Russia for a month-long odyssey across the country. I am planning to travel nearly three-quarters of the way across Russia, and the whole time I'll be crashing on random Russians' couches and sleeping on overnight trains. It's going to be epic, and with any luck, I'm going to have a whole lot of stories to tell.

I'm going to try to blog about the experience as often as I can on my Livejournal - the link is in my signature. Feel free to stop by! And wish me luck!

Oh! and everyone who's going to AC - have a great time! (:

Welcome back to our traveling bunny buddy..

That phrase converted to Russian reminds me of a
old Bugs bunny cartoon.  Where he spoke a long sentance
in a different language to say very little.  :D

Though it's not too uncommon to take a lot to translate a
simple saying into another language, and keep it's meaning.

Oh hey, I should probably post this here too! I know there are at least a few Furtopians I've talked to who are trying to pick up various foreign languages.

So I'm helping to organize something called the 2010 Linguathon on Livejournal! Linguathon is like NaNoWriMo for languages, basically. It's a month-long challenge in which everyone first chooses a target language (or languages) to learn, and then tries to progress as far as possible in their language studies over the course of a month.

This year's Linguathon is running from August 1st at 12 AM to August 31st at 11:59 PM. Our Livejournal community is here (http://community.livejournal.com/linguathon/), and you can read my blog entry about Linguathon here (http://arbutus.livejournal.com/234353.html) if you want more information. I think you need to have a Livejournal account to join the community or to comment, but even if you don't have one, you should feel free to follow along and participate on your own.

Come take a look! It'd be awesome if one or a few of you turned up. :)

Arbutus, I think I have a song you might like...

The Bunny Song! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oe02H4KQZI&feature=related)

...but before you listen to it and have a heart attack, you should know this:  The song discusses the consumption of chocolate bunnies, not flesh-and-blood bunnies.  The movie's context makes this clear, but the linked video is just the song and thus lacks this context.

Enjoy!

Carnivores outnumber herbivores, and there's nothing you can do about it. Get used to it.  ;)

Would I count as carnivore as I am a tiger, or as a herbivore as I am vegetarian? >>

Guys. Very big life news to share. Instead of posting it here on Furtopia, I'm going to ask you to click through to my blog post on the matter, because I would prefer for the Googles to keep Furtopia and my professional life separate.

http://arbutus.livejournal.com/243505.html

Long story short: I have only about two more months in this country before I hop on a plane and go off to live in the developing world. :o

you are going to have an internet connection,  yes?   :(

I can't be sure of that. It depends on what country I wind up in. The internet is a pretty rare thing outside the developed world... in Russia and Mexico, I had to find an internet cafe whenever I wanted to check my email. I'd love to keep on visiting you guys on Furtopia, but if home internet connections aren't available, it might not be possible. :'(

Well, the original Toonces was a character on Saturday Night Live: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toonces_the_Driving_Cat

But my signature quote comes from a random FA comment by a furry who has adopted the same name. ;)

Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you all know that I'm going to be keeping some public blogs while I'm abroad... so even if I can't make it onto Furtopia, you can still follow along with me throughout my next year of travel!

My personal blog, as usual, can be found on Livejournal (http://arbutus.livejournal.com/). With luck, I'll be making lots of public posts there about my travels and experiences, along with occasional friends-locked posts for when I have thoughts that are better kept out of the public eye.

For those who prefer not to follow an LJ blog, I'm also keeping a Wordpress blog (http://arbutuswd.wordpress.com/) that will mirror all the public posts from my Livejournal. You can use the widget in the right sidebar to have my updates emailed directly to your inbox, if that interests you. Keep in mind, though, that this is the less furry-friendly blog of the two, because I want to be able to show it to family members, professional contacts and future classmates.

I'll probably get scarce around here pretty soon, so godspeed to all!

Hey guys, got a bit of life news to share. I'm moving to Boston in August! Just found an apartment last week. I'm starting a two-year master's program in international development at Tufts University, and I couldn't be more excited about it - even though I'm about to become absurdly busy.

Only two weeks to pack up all my stuff and move! Ahhh!

Actually, I think they'd be more distracted by the fact that I just used my bunny car to bring 89 bunnies to the office. I can see how this would be distressing to some people. The bunnies would all be hopping around chewing on everyone's computer cables. "YES, MY MINIONS! GNAW! GNAW!!!" I would cackle while spinning in my swivel chair. The bunnies would dig a hole through to the first floor. They would also gnaw on the carpet sometimes. I would be fired.

Then they would eat all the paper money you have, all your foodstuffs and you'd have to either live off bunny meat or sell the bunnies to survive.... Or like, end yourself with a dramatic self drowning in bunny fluff.

/me stands at the side of the road holding his hand out in the typical hitchiker's position, only instead of holding out his thumb, he is holding a very large carrot

Hey guys,

It feels like it's been forever, even though it hasn't. Time and obligation are funny like that. I feel odd even posting out here on the general forums; somehow, I've convinced myself that I am a ghost from the past whom nobody will remember.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I'm formalizing something that's already been true for months. I'm stepping down as one of the Furtopia admins. And due to lack of time and my own altered relationship with the furry fandom, I probably won't be back on Furtopia too often in general. So I suppose this is a goodbye post too.

I've spent seven wonderful years here on Furtopia, four of those as a staff member, and I'm so glad to have been such a big part of the community. No matter what direction my life takes me, I'll always look back on this place with fondness and love.

Keep on rocking, and I wish you all the best.

*leaves a large pile of carrots as a parting gift for you all*

We'll all miss you Arbutus, but good luck in your real life endeavors. And hopefully, you'll come back and visit sometime. :)  And also, thank you for providing the time that you did to help serve Furtopia.

*waves goodbye*

You will be missed, Arbutus.  I remember fondly the times you participated in my puzzles of the Logic Puzzles subforum back when it existed.  In fact, one of the posts you made there is one of my funniest memories as a member here.

I'm glad to know that you're pursuing something you're passionate about, and would love to see you back here as a regular member from time to time.

Sorry to see you go Arbutus.

A bunny hug too.

Remember being furry isn't just our looks, but who we
are inside. it's a hobby we enjoy and share.

I think it's great your finding your lifes work. What creates
that fire you desire. After all life is all too short to sit and
dream.

Personally I think you would make a fine author. Perhaps
later in life you will use all your travel experiences toward
that end.

Take care my friend.  I wish that you have
a wonderful career, and good life.

:( …I am sorry to see you go, but I will not say goodbye, as that implies an ending, or a finish…
Instead, I say good journey, as that implies a continuation, moving forward, and living life, as life is the journey that we all are traveling.

You see, we are all on a journey in which we never stop moving forward, and in this journey that is life we are always traveling to new places.
And that’s regardless of whether those places be physical, spiritual, philosophical, or even just some rendered HTML code on a screen. ;)

And so as you move on to new places and things, I say good journey to you Arbutus, and may your journey be an exciting and happy one. :)

Thank you so much, you guys, for all of your kind words. Who knows, I may pop in again down the line as a normal member... but until then, I'll miss you all.

Keep on being special.

Take care, Arbutus. And as they say in the model ship building community: May you have fair winds and calm seas.
