Title: At what point do you consider youself a furry
Post by: KatAddy on February 12, 2014, 04:35:56 pm
I have a lot of 'furry' friends that are making me reconsider what and who I consider furries. Originally I thought that a furry was just any person enjoyed animals, anthros, and the rp, writing, and art. Then I used to think that you had to have a fursona to be an official furry. Then I started to think of furries as sub-culture where everyone who contributes is a part of the group. Now, well now im just confused.

I have one friend who loves anthros and considers himself a furry even though he doesn't draw, write, read, or participate in much furry things. Is he still a furry?

I have another friend who is interested in the adult side of the furry fandom but doesn't have a fursona or any interest in writing/drawing furry things. Is he a furry?

I know a person online who loves anthros and draws them all the time, and even has a sort of fursona but doesn't consider herself a furry (hates furries actual =/ )  Is she a furry.

Its starting to make me question what it means to be a furry. Are you a furry just if you say you are? Or do you have to participate and contribute to the fandom?

What do you think??

Hmm I think if you consider your self furry and love it then I think your furry.

i think as long as you enjoy at least some of the part of the fandom and you want to call yourself a furry then youre a furry. some people who actively participate in the fandom arent always furries because they prefer not to put a label with such negative connotations on themselves. basically being a furry and what you consider the "requirements" so to speak to be one is judged on an individual level and no one cares how much you participate/contribute, if you say youre a furry then youre a welcome part of the fandom. if you actively participate but dont call yourself a furry we'll respect that but youre still welcome to join us at anytime.

My two sense, first question, yes. Second question, yes. Third question, no.

There are plenty of people in the fandom that cant draw. I'm one in that group. I'm a musician but have no desire to write furry related songs. I don't consider myself an animal. I don't have an animal spirit. I dislike furry porn. My fursona isn't who I am. I created it. It's a part of me.  Am I a furry? Yes. Furry isn't a mold to fit into. Nor is it a popularity contest. Furry can be described as an art of self expression and an act of excepting others for who they are.

You're a furry if you're a fan of anthropomorphic animals. You don't have to want to fursuit, you don't have to draw, you don't have to write. Also, liking those things don't automatically mean you're a furry either!

Minus the being a musician part, and being a furry, that about sums up my opinions as well.

I don't consider myself part of the fandom; i freely associate with it, but i don't feel like i'm actually one of you.

Hmm I think if you consider your self furry and love it then I think your furry.

This. Many times over.

In my own case, I spent the vast majority of my time in the fandom as just a watcher. Perhaps you could call it being a consumer. I don't produce music. I don't write. I don't RP. I attempted to draw, but gave up really quickly because I lack the patience for that. I had a general framework for a fursona, but no real solid design in place. I basically was just straight-up enjoying the concept, enjoying watching the sorts of things that artists were producing, and enjoying interacting loosely with the community.

Now, I'm finding myself here helping out with this site. I've been two MFF two years in a row, and plan to keep going. I'm considering picking another con to attend earlier in the year. I have half a mind to get a fursuit. I actually have a fully-designed character now, and have commissioned a few small pieces here and there over the last couple months.

And you know what? I don't feel one bit more or less "furry" than when I first got into all this. I feel a little more connected because I'm a bit more involved now. But I don't really feel the degree to which I am "furry" has changed.

my base requirements for some one to be a furry is if they like anthros.. if they don't like anthros than i don't really understand how they would be a furry.... and the second requirement is if the person decides to label them self as a furry...

pretty much you can like anthros but not be a furry but you can't be a furry and not like anthros. if you are just participating then you like the fandom not furries...

This person is a furry.  (:

This person is in denial (in the words of Ace Ventura, "Denial can be an ugly thing,"), and is probably a closet furry.

You don't need a fursona to be a furry. You don't need to write furry fics, draw furries, RP as a furry, etc. to be a furry. You simply need to enjoy anthropomorphic animals to be a furry. That's it, IMO.

*shrugs*

Do you like talking animals? Yes? You may be a furry.

Do you like talking animals but don't consider yourself a furry? You are not a furry.

Since we're a fandom which doesn't have any basis in one particular form of media or set of characters to be a fan of in the first place, we've sort of forgotten that we're..well, a fandom :o. If you don't consider yourself to be part of it, you're certainly not obligated to participate in it.

Shim has it down.

There's basically only two requirements to being a furry.

1.  An interest in Anthropomorphic Animals
2.  You consider yourself to be a furry.

Here's a handy flowchart I made:

(Just read the bottom portion of this post.)
Here's a handy flowchart I made:

Alright, we'll use this flow chart then...

"I have one friend who loves anthros and considers himself a furry even though he doesn't draw, write, read, or participate in much furry things. Is he still a furry?"
*Checks chart* Nope.
"I have another friend who is interested in the adult side of the furry fandom but doesn't have a fursona or any interest in writing/drawing furry things. Is he a furry?"
Hmmm... no.
"I know a person online who loves anthros and draws them all the time, and even has a sort of fursona but doesn't consider herself a furry (hates furries actual =/ )  Is she a furry. "
And... nope.

Wait, something's wrong here.

 :P

...Okay, here are my actual answers:
1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. Nope. (Denial, anyways)

i like animals art being skillful and being included so i guess this sort of fits the answer in the closest way. :)

It depends, it says animal right? So... Patrick from SpongeBob is a starfish, which is an animal with human qualities. And I LOVED that show, but didn't know the term furry at the time (I was 6 years old iyww (if you were wondering)) so, I'd consider myself a furry ever since I started watching that show. I don't know if double parentheses are real.

I like cookies, cute cuddly animals and playing as animals who talk and stand on two or four legs. Am I a furry? OwO
