Title: Wearing a tail in public
Post by: Ormspryde on March 27, 2008, 03:59:38 pm
What the subject says.  I'm wearing it right now, sitting here in the library.  Nobody's commented on it yet, and that's just fine with me.  X3

It scared the crap out of me when I was about ten feet from my house, but I'm better now.  I think I'll have to start wearing my tail out more often.   :)

That's great! I'm trying to find myself a tiger tail. I have a tiger hat with ears on it's way :) I don't think I'll take either of them off :D Maybe I'll get some paws... too (:

I'll be scared too, but the more we do it the easier it will get not only for us, but others too :D

That occurred to me, since there's a distinctive lack of furriness in the doomy city in which I live.  (I saw someone in a mascot costume walking down a prominent street at midday once, but that's another thing entirely)  Maybe I can persuade others to 'take the plunge', as it were.

P.S., I'm wearing a grey stripey cat tail, but I made a white tiger tail and ears for someone.  -------> http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff81/Ormspryde/Commissions/Tiger%20Tail%20and%20Ears/earsfinal.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff81/Ormspryde/Commissions/Tiger%20Tail%20and%20Ears/tigercollarfinished.jpg http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff81/Ormspryde/Commissions/Tiger%20Tail%20and%20Ears/tigertailandearsprogress.jpg

It was for a cosplay thing, but I got paid for it.  :3

I love them! Especially the tiger tail :D I'm not a white tiger, though  :P
I'm still wondering whether to get paws too... Dunno if I'd wear them or not =/ Probably would as it's so cold and miserable in lovely ol' Britain. I have my hat with ears on in the post :D

That's the one thing that people from different countries can agree on; we both like to wear tails, ears, and other furry things.

International Furriness FTW.

awesome  :)

First time I wore my tail in public was great and I had a bunch of questions thrown my way (naturally) mainly from college tutors

You'll get more attention if you wear it around friends who know nothing of your furriness  :D

I would assume people would stare, its something i have always wanted to do, but never had the courage or the time. My tail is huge tho, big and fluffy  :)

I need a tail too. It's hard to find a mouse tail though, mostly you just see foxes and cats.  :'(

I'd love to wear my tail in public... But as it happens I just can't muster up the courage to do so. I'm a pretty shy person, and don't like drawing attention to myself. Maybe I'm just being paranoid?
Title: Re: Wearing a tail in public
Post by: Pawsies on April 02, 2008, 11:47:36 am
Awh Luku, I'd say that was normal, really.... but once you've mustered the courage once it should become easier :) If more and more furs get the courage others will likely be more inclined to show off their tails in public, too :D

I've been trying quite hard to get a tail for a couple months now (no one ever repsonds; not the big sites or the indviduals, it's a little frustrating). Once I do get it, I was initially thinking of just wearing it to cons, but I've seen a couple threads like this one ehre and there, so I'm thinking about going out in public with it.

Thing is, I'm a lot like Luku, and I'm pretty nervous about doing it. My main concern wouldn't be jeers, stares, anything like that; I'm just worried someone would come up and take it (and I'm got the basic geek/nerd body, so I wouldn't be able to do anything to stop them), and then I'd be out my tail (and possibly more). If I ever started wearing it (once I get it, of course) it would start at college, but I'm still fairly nervous (though I here folk in San Fransisco are a tad more accepting than others).

They got tufts... but they've also got some excellent ears, so all is not lost (man, I love Welsh Corgis, they're so cute :))

Yeah-- but ears-- especially corgi ears-- stick out a bit much-- and I don't know if you know anything about Bakersfield California, but it isn't exactly known for its openness to the abnormal. The town prides itself on its involvement in country music, just to give you an idea.

Nah, I know the place (Mom was born there, Grandparents still live there. In fact, they had a Welsh for a while). Personally, I think the town could use some spicing up (it's just so dull).

When I get my tail and ears, I think I very well may start wearing them out. The funny thing is, my school's mascot is a wolf...so if I wore it around school, people may just think I'm showing school spirit heh. I'll see though. I know I'll definitely wear it out over the summer.

Finally finished and confirmed my order, and my tail should be ready by the end of May (I'm on a bit of a waiting list at the moment before they get started). I can't wait :)

I'll probably wear it in college, maybe not right away but eventually (probably after I make sure everyone knows I'm a Furry. Or I'll just do it out of the blue, blindside them a bit). I am a bit worried about it, though; what's the worst reaction anyone's every gotten? I mean, has anyone ever tried to take it or anything when you're wearing it?
Title: Re: Wearing a tail in public
Post by: Anthro_Inquisitor on April 14, 2008, 10:21:40 pm
I saw two people wearing them in a mall (idk if they were furry or gothic though, they had the whole slipknot+chains thing going at the same time), some little kid ran by and pulled the girls tail then took off running.

I didn't say anything to them but I couldn't help but laugh at the look on the girls face when the kid did that.

Other than  that i've not seen anything bad actually happen to tail-wearers.

I mean honestly whats the worst that could happen? unless your in an area where your safety is in serious danger... people normally won't do more than ask questions (or play pranks)

Do it out of the blue, first reactions are awesome. :) To bad certain people give the best reactions. :(
That just my input, do what you want. ;)

I'll do it out of the blue. I can handle some pranks and whatnot, and I haven't been really heavily bullied as it is now (not exactly a high mark on the social totem pole), so a tail shouldn't matter. As long as nothing happens to it to the point where I need to get a new one (getting it to begin with has been a strangely difficult hassle), I'm cool. Can't wait for college to start now ;)

I've tailed in public just once, at a mall on the way home from a Renaissance festival where I bought a fox tail.  I should find a good reason to do it again (a reason for my friends not to ditch me for being weird!) :P

There's some girl at my school that wears ears and sometimes a tail.  I've only ever spotted her halfway across crowded public areas like the library, but it's interesting to see that in public.

I have no tail now, but one will be coming with my fursuit.   I could probably get away with wearing a tail at my work, it's just that type of place. XD  Though I'm sure it'd freak some people out, not just the fact I'm wearing a tail but it's ME who's wearing it.  While there is nothing serious that goes on at my work, I am among the serious ones unfortunately.  They already talked about all of us in my department coming in wearing some sort of animal ears which some people do just do to do... they actually said that it'd be impossible to get me to do that as it'd be way 'out of character'.  Goes to show how much co-workers really know me.  When I have my fursuit I want to go into work on a halloween with it on.  I haven't dressed up for halloween the past 2 years, or 6 years or so actually.  That'll surely provoke questions and confusion XD

I don't have a fursuit  :'( .....yet. Hopefully, as soon as I have enough money, I'll be able to attempt making one on my own. but I do hav'a tail!!! Two actually. One is real 0.0 so I had to bury it in the back yard so that the owner who had it would rest in piece. My other tail, however, is fake....but it's a kitty tail. I'm not a kitty....Imma canid.

I'd love to work up the courage to wear my tail in public...   I only did that once, and it was just to get the mail (end of our street).  And noone realy saw it.  I've only ever showed it to one of my friends and he thought it was awesome!

I'd be kind of worried with all the jerks in our school, but my emediate friends are pretty accepting, we're pretty much the weird nerd table anyway.

I had a tail-and-a-straw-hat-with-fox-ears jaunt today when I went out to run errands. It was a particularly fun run, especially when in Gamestop one gentleman said to me, "Okay, I just have to ask- Tails?"

"No," said I, fishing the keychain of my foxy Sonic series friend out of my pocket, "although I am a fan of him."

"I thought so," he said. "You were one tail short for that. So what's with the getup?"

"Do you know of the anthropomorphic fandom, or the 'furry' fandom in the shorthand?"

"Wow, really? So, did you go to last Anthrocon?"

That is actually the second time I've had that very conversation in a Gamestop.

Hehe.  It took me forever to muster up the courage to wear the ol' tail in public, but once I did it the first time, I never stopped.

Even recently, myself and a local fur wore our tails on a side-trip I took to the Fort Worth Zoo.  You wouldn't believe the fun responses people give, and how much the kids enjoy seeing people with tails.  We even had one parent comment after seeing her kid notice my tail: "Well shoot, we should have brought our tiger tails with us for the kids to wear"

Just give it a shot.  Don't be afraid of what people think, there's always gonna be that 1 person who doesn't like it, but 99% don't care and the other 1% will have a good laugh with you  (:

Heh, I feel special, I just bought my 4th tail a few weeks ago. ^.^' I also got two pairs of ears and two new collars. Anyway about the wearing it in public, it helps to get a friend to go with you. Even if they don't get the whole furry thing, if they're willing to do it with you, its helpful. Personally, The first time I wore my tail was to a football game. I had little kids pulling it all the time, but it was funny seeing some of the reactions of the people. I was even asked if i was a furry. But either way, don't be afraid, its fun!!!

Just got it today, and NomeKing is right; the temptation to wear it out is quite overwhelming :) But for now it's going to have to stay in, life's not quite settled enough to try something like wearing it out just yet.

But it is quite fuzzy, so it'll probably happen eventually (:

I actually realized (when the tail arrived) that all my pants aren't really belt pants. They've got one loop, but that's it (very strange); so while a belt can still go around it, it's not as supported as it needs to be (short response: I need more pants).

Also I've got no one who would take that picture, so expect a mirror shot :)

Yeah, what he said. Mine was a total of $45 (shipping and all), and took about two months (from order placement to when I actually received it).

One big problem I faced was actually getting places to respond to me. I sent about a dozen places e-mails, and FurrHappens was the only one to respond. So, for me at least, it was them or nothing. Luckily the result is awesome, so I'm not disappointed :)

When I get my tail and ears, I'm definitely going to wear them out in public. I even plan to wear them to school, and I go to a very open minded school so I doubt it'll be a problem. ^.^ Even though my mom doesn't like the idea, says it's stupid, and won't let me.

But hell, everyone says I should learn to rebel more, that I'm a teenager, and teenagers are supposed to rebel. XD SO I'M GONNA BE A REBEL FOR ONCE. YEAH. -punches air-

Once you get one and wear it around the house alot, you might forget you ahve it on and go outside with it on :3

I would wear mine at a camp I'm working at right now but I work at the barn all day and it would get dirty and messed up :C

Pretty true. I wear it inside whenever I can (re: when my parents are out), and you get used to it fast (except when sitting down). And if we lived in my old house, I'd definitely wander outside with it; but in our current house, we're too far from anywhere, and need a car to get around. And wearing it in the car would be a tad uncomfortable (though I've still got the 'don't-squish-it' mindset going).

I sit in my wolf tail cause I just put it between my legs. But I also have a curly tail that I just swing to a side if I sit down in a chair that doesn't have an open backing :3

Yeah, I can usually stick mine between my legs as well, but I'm not yet sure how much it can take, so I try to be really gentle with it.

It's actually pretty easy to fix even if you do squash it a bit.  I attended a fursuit construction seminar at RMFC this year and they said the tails can be restuffed without much of a hassle.  In fact, they recommend you do it periodically just to keep the shape nice and prevent the stuffing from developing an odor (you know, old plushie funk  :P).

Hmm, that's sounds like something I would want to look into down the line. It's fine for now, though, and I'm pretty sure it can make it in excellent shape until FC09 (because while I could try fixing it at my house, I've got no idea what I'm doing, and having someone with at least a little experience around would probably make the whole thing go a lot smoother).

Or try to find friends that just like to dress crazy.  If a group goes to walmart with a catholic priest, a hufflepuff, a pirate, and a guy in a tail the tail guy has plenty of room to say, "I'm not THAT weird."

Quite right, actually.

Just wore it out (barely, but out nonetheless). I had it on when I went to pick up some take-out. I forgot who said it, but the first few steps are hard (I was actually shaking a bit). Then I realized that I was still standing and there was no angry mob out to get me, so I rolled with it. It was nice; pretty crowded, mostly families with their kids eating dinner. Couple stares, some smiles, but for the most part no one really noticed (except for at least one family inside a restaurant. And if seeing something like that isn't a conversation starter, then I just don't know what is). It was actually kinda fun.

Of course, I walked all of 100 feet from my car to the restaurant and back, so it's basically the equivallent of dipping your toe in the pool before you get it. But I'm donating blood on Monday, I guess I'll wear it to that (I realize now the worst that'll probably happen is I'll have to sit right on it for a half an hour; hope it can last).

Side note: It took about 5 minutes to get into the car, because I had to find a way to sit down, reach the gearshift, and give me tail a place to sit. It's kinda complicated in practice :-[

It was pretty exciting for me, though I was barely out in an area where no one knew me. Kudos to you for being brave enough to do it all day :)

Just ignore any not-so-nice comments (at a school I don't think anyone would take it beyond talking), bask in the glow of being noticed and more interesting than all those tail-less people, and relax. It'll go fine.

And be sure you can sit down quickly with it on; that's always my issue, I need to actually survey the chair or whatever before I plop down :-[

-laughs- I guess I'll never understand being afraid to wear a tail outside. X3 I go out in my fullsuit all the time, just for the fun of it, and I usually wear my tail whenever I go to the mall or anything. Strangely, people usually /don't/ notice (or if they do, they don't react). But, then, maybe it's just where I live. =P In Dallas they don't seem to care much what you do.

Well, wearing the tail was fun for the first ten minutes before they made me take it off. >:( It was too distracting and inappropriate apparently. Distracting from what, I have no idea since it was the last day of school and we did nothing but watch movies.

I got a lot off questions why I was wearing them and stuff like that. Lots of stares, a few laughs. But overall is was positive.

A lot of my peers where disappointed when I was told to take them off, which made me feel good. XD They all thought it was stupid when I got told to take them off. o.o;

Glad it was fun for a minute!

"Too distracting"  is an excuse the schools give as a catch-all "stop being weird" rule.  I was given the same excuse for being punished after painting my friend green my senior year of high school (long story).   :D

It's cool that your classmates supported you on it.  I can't see mine having done the same.  It's amazing the difference a decade can make in people's attitudes.

Glad to hear all the support you got. And Poco's right about what the school said, it doesn't make much sense (especially on the last day of school. I mean, even with finals going on it's not that big a deal). Look at it this way, now you can wear it all summer and you know your friends will be all for it :)
Title: Re: Wearing a tail in public
Post by: PinkPlushii on June 24, 2008, 08:05:56 pm
I can't see the people at my old school supporting it either. I go to a small private school for teens with mental health issues, so everyone is mostly pretty open-minded about things.

I could understand my ears being a distraction, because they are big since they're fennec fox ears, but the tail? It's not like it was a big lemur tail or anything...xD Oh well. I can now officially say I tried!

Poco, you painted your friend green? :O That's so awesome. How'd they handle that? Did they send him home or something to wash off? XD Since you can't just take off paint like you can a shirt or something!

Im majorly impressed. I would never have the courage to do something like that.  Plus my school was the lamest for stuff like that. My friend had a tiny spot on his hair that was green from halloween the night before, and they made him go home.

He actually got through one class without trouble.  The teacher was a young guy and just rolled his eyes when my friend came in.  His next teacher sent him to his dean, who sent him home.  It wasn't too big a deal since the day was almost over by then.

I took a LOT of theater classes in high school and painting him green was my 'project' for the makeup unit of a production class (really I just wanted to see what would happen).  If I'd only known about the fandom back then I could've used both the makeup and costume design units to learn how to do fursuits.   :P

When I went to the Ft. Worth Zoo (on a saturday :o), I really didn't have a problem with kids.  I had a few come up and grab it, but most didn't yank at it.  (If you've never been to a big-city zoo on saturday, it's PACKED with anklebiters).  One resolution to your worries is to have belt-loop straps(that you actually string the belt through, not ones that attach to belt loops) on the end of the tail (like mine), and just wear a shirt that goes below your beltline so nobody sees the belt/top of your tail.  To vouch for the strength of the beltloop straps, my britches fell apart (belt loops falling off) and the tail was fine, so make sure you got good pants  :P

Halloween, I would think, would be the one time of the year were you would get less cracks or whatever about it. At the very least people would just assume costume and pass it by (personally I think it's a good intro into wearing it more; just wear it the entire week of Halloween, then by next week people are used to it. That's my plan for this October, at least).

I don't see any problem with wearing it to class (though be sure it has a place to stay down behind the chair, and doesn't come up in anyone's face), though the instructor may play the 'too distracting' card and make you remove it.

lol... our school's dead strict on uniform... we have to wear a suit!!!!!!! plus it has to be black, with a plain shirt and either grey or black jumper with a conventional tie. no-where does it say that tail are aloud XDDDDD

but... tbh... nobody ever took me up on my uniform, and me and another dude had a game to see who could wear the worst uniform and get away with it. i wore a flowery shirt 90% of the time, and wooly hat 100% of the time (during winter) never wore my suit jacket, wore a bright green stripy jumper, a pair of blue skate shoes, and had dreadlocks XDDD... i didn't even win!!! College works a wee bit different than High School.  99 times out of 100, the instructor aint gonna care what yer wearing, and, depending on where you're taking classes, you might get swallowed up in the class size if it's a larger campus.  Sure, people are going to notice it, some will ask you about it, and you will get jeers from people who think they're better than everyone else, but overall, it's just fun and different.

To be honest with you, I'd do my first tail outing with a friend, and at a public place.  If you want to wear it to school, gradually work up to that.

well i don't have a furend, just a regular one lol.
i'll probably start wearing it a few days before around the house and such so i can "get my money worth" lol
then i'll joke it up and wear it outside, somebody in my house (most likely younger bro) is gonna dare me to, so i can just say that. i'll run into my friend (notice how i say that...i only got one of those :( )
and he's gonna find it to be stupid unless it looks cool then he'll deam it nesseccary cause thats the way i act lol. and he'll most likely dare me to do the same for a while so i could say that it was a dare and past a lie detector  :D

course those are theoretical, but 31st is for sure lol

I'll wear it to Comic-Con (And if we go to the San Diego Zoo, there as well), which will be an experience. Not so much because of wandering around the convention with it (seems like something like that would blend right in there), but that I'll need to explain to my parents why I'm wearing it :P

The tail I just finished, of my fursona, was carved out of foam from JoAnns and then had fur glued on it. Yay hot glue!

I can now say with absolute certainty that the Zoo is the best non-convention place to wear a tail. I had mine on when we went to the San Diego Zoo yesterday, and responses were pretty positive (a little girl thought it was real, an enthusiastic zoo employee loved it, and some kids wanted to know where I got it. And then there's the horde of little kids that just liked seeing it). Good stuff.

It's nice when people don't hassle you for wearing a tail in public. I haven't wore mine out and about in a long time. Last thing I need is some immature ignorant people hassling me and my mate for wearing a tail when they are wearing their pants (with a belt) down around their knees.  I see nothing wrong with wearing a tail or ears. I used to wear my old set of ears religiously.

I saw a pair of furs wearing tails at the Surfside Arcade in Rehoboth Beach on Sunday night... one of the cashiers also said he saw them there on Monday midday.  Are you guys on here?  Speak up if you are!  Always excited to meet new furs in real-world-space ^_^

I finally made my own (rather pathetic) tail.   I haven't worn it out in public yet though. I can already hear the comments:  "Why is there a piece of cloth hanging off your butt?"   :D

Maybe I'll make a better looking one before venturing outside. :-[

I want to make another tail in the future that I'll wear around college. My room mate will probably also want a tail. So I guess I have to make two? I've already worn my collar around and no one cared. I'll make it by Halloween and just wear it then on :3

Before I transferred colleges, I wore a funfur black tail around ALL the time. No one cared. Eventually everyone ignored it like I was just the eclectic tail and collar wearer over in the corner.

Sometimes wearing your tail in public can get a bit freaky though. I wore my to the mall, and while i was at the book store was surrounded by a bunch of kids. Luckily I had my firned with me, but it was still freaky because they were rather harassing......anyways other than that I wear my tail everywhere still. Except school, that would be m urder.

awwww souround Kitty, thats not very nice. I'd just beat them up if they messed with me, but thats just me. only reason why i don't stuff like that, is cause me alone.  :'( no other furs that i know of, being singular to start out, would just kill half the fun.

I would but I was badly outnumbered. Like, 6 to one. 0.o and they looked about junior/senior age and I was a freshman at the time. >.< Ah well though. The only other thing that happens is that little kdis pull it, but then I just hiss at them and they scatter. XD But yah I don't pick fights, especially when the odds are unfair.  (:

I made a tail earlier this year, but I'm too afraid to wear it for fear of getting it dirty or wet. :( (I tend to run around in the street and in parks just after or while it is raining and I don't want to splash it with mud.) And I'd hate to lose it or break it, either by having someone grab it and rip it off or just through natural wear and tear. I dress so weirdly anyway that I'm pretty used to receiving unwanted attention, so having people comment wouldn't phase me... I'm just too attached to the thing to risk damaging it. >:(

mmhm, soft definatly, but I wouldn't aggree with it, just not my style... >.>

As soon as I get a tail, I'd probably go out wearing it with my friends and take my recorder to see if I can catch some people's reactions on audio tape. :)

What would you think if you saw someone wearing a tail at a more professional job? Say, as a secretary for a doctor's office? *cough* *cough* :P

If I personally saw it? I'd give it a thumbs up and a smile.

Now, if a slightly more sane person were to see it, then who knows. The one of the better things about tails, though, is that depending on how you approach someone, they can't see it until you turn around to leave. The benefit of this is they get a chance to meet you, find you're a smart and nice person, and nothing wrong with you. Helps as a set up.

Plus, secretaries are usually behind those big desks and sitting down, so no one would see it and be spooked (customers, at least). Little kids would probably love it, which would be great for calming them down in the waiting room (which is always a scary place).

Now that I have a tail, I wear it out and about as much as possible. But it's kind of bulky so it does get in the way sometimes. I really haven't gotten a lot of comments about it actually. When I get my next tail (a big purple, black and white one), I might get a little more attention. Especially if I wear it around campus. I really just need to invest in a smaller tail (or make my own) so that it doesn't get in the way so much.

I wore ears and a tail once to cosplay as an anthropomorphic cat character from a world I'd made up, when I was 10 or so. I wore some kind of sci-fi getup to go along with it, and carried a Lazer Tag blaster. I don't think anyone but my friend had any clue what I was.

Later on as a teenager I wore a (rather low-key) Star Fox flight jacket to a class. After somebody mocked me for it I never did that again.

I bought a tail at the Renaissance Festival yesterday, and wore it around a bunch.  Then when we left and went to Applebee's for dinner I was wearing it then, too ^_^  There's a furmeet I'm going to this friday, and I'll probably wear it for that as well.

I would most definatly wear my tail in public. When I'm 20 that is! x3

I'm fixing to get my first tail this holloween, and hopefully if they don't have leopard tails, I can get a TIGER TAIL! TIGER TAIL FTW!!!! x3

I wish people would stop hatin' me....I wanna be who I wanna be, and it seems everyone at my school has a problem with that. :(

Anyway, here is a pic of the tail I'm getting:

Cool, nice tail there. But I'm a tad confused; have you already seen the tail in stores and are hoping to get it soon? Or are you getting it online from somewhere (and why settle for something that isn't what you want? Save up a bit and get what you really want)

It's the tail I'm looking for, and I ment it's crappy compared to the one I REALLY wanna get. The one I really want would probably range from $75 to $110, which means I would have to get it commissioned, and my parents hate biz over the internetz.

Alright, just checking.

Though (and I may be mistaken here), if you're paying that much for a tail commission you're getting ripped off. My Raccoon tail was only $45, and that seems like something that has more material (and thus higher costs) than a Tiger tail.

What tail maker under the blue sky charges that much for a leopard tail? I got my very well-made fox tail for a little over thirty, and my raccoon tail, which is huge and had to be shipped from Canada, only cost me fifty-five. You are getting scammed severely if you think $75-$110 is a fair range of price.

If it's airbrushed, that price range isn't -that- unheard of.

id like a fox tail, but all i have is a collar at the moment.  My parents would kill me if I wore a tail.  If anyone wants to see my collar, find the "A collar (and why I feel really really dumb right now)" topic.  My friend posted a link to some pictures.  Its on the last or next to last page of the topic.

I dunno, even with every various add-on and perk one can get when customizing a tail, it should cost around $60 tops (and that's with shipping). Anything higher, and it may be wise to seek out a different service to get it made (a Tiger tail like the one above can probably be done for around $30).

Airbrushed in the sense of, one starts with a white tail, and has the entire thing airbrushed to create the final product.  Adding something to an existing pattern shouldn't run anyone more than 60 bucks, unless the fur you use is just that expensive.

That's true, but that seems like something that's a tad unnecessary. You can get a very high-quality result simply from pre-colored furs put together, and you can get it fairly cheap (in a Fursuit-pricing sense of things, of course). Again, I'll go back to my tail; two colors of fur put in a stripe patter, well stitched and a decent size and weight, brought to a grand total of $45 (including the shipping fee). It's exactly what I was looking for, and it didn't require me to make a dent in my spending account to get it.

I think it depends on the tail. The cat tails and tiger tails and all that, they're a little smaller and easier for the eye to glance over. Bigger ones like a Skunk or Raccoon tail (basically any kind where you need to shift it around to sit down) tend to be a little more noticed.

But I guess it depends on the crowd. I was wondering around Comic-Con with mine, and very few people even batted an eye at it (though considering what some people were wearing, my tail was pretty inconspicuous).

I'm not sure if you've seen my tail (I had a post in the fursuiting section) but it's not small by any means and does require some maneuvering to sit down in. Sure, it's not as big as a Skunk's nor Raccoon's, but it's hard to miss in my opinion. However, after I managed to basically have a full on conversation with my mom, getting food out and generally going about my business while we were midst conversation (and yes, she was looking at me a fair amount of the time) but she never once even noticed my tail. Despite me swaying it around as I walked and bending over to look in the fridge and sitting down in a chair. How do I know? She came down today (that is, a few days after that experience) and she noticed my tail lying off to the side and had no clue what it was, nor that I was wearing it around her pretty constantly and she never even noticed! She was pretty surprised by the fact I had a tail, let alone sewed it and wore it around.

I've seen that same thing happen at my friend's house too (among many other occasions). They didn't even notice I had it on (even when they walked behind me at times O.o) until I got up to leave and it was practically right in their face!

Basically, I see that it comes down to that if you don't make a big deal of it, and don't shove it in people's faces nor leave it in a position that results in it sticking out oddly, then no body will notice it, even if you're up about and walking around! I know that sounds hard to believe, but that's what I've come to experience.
Title: Re: Wearing a tail in public
Post by: Relaxing Dragon on September 14, 2008, 03:36:01 am
Come to think of it, that makes sense. I feel it depends on whoever is watching, but for the most part if you just go with it, it seems like the rest of the people will follow suit.

And now I need to go root through the fursuit section to find a pic of your tail (:

YES. Yes, yes, yes. I've worn fangs, my tail, no shoes, walked backwards, and a myriad of other things that are slightly socially unacceptable (will try ears this afternoon), and as long as I don't make a big deal of it and act like it's the most normal thing in the world, no one notices or at least doesn't comment. It's only when I point it out that people actually notice it.

(Now that's commentary on our current world, positive or negative, for ya, and a topic that could yield some interesting data.)

I'll second people not noticing if you act like it's normal.  I wore my fox tail to a furmeet this Friday.  On the way into the mall, I didn't get any looks from anyone, and while at the furmeet, *other furs* took an hour or so to notice it :-P

Like Rick Woods, I also got a tail at the local Renaissance Festival.  It's one of a black fox, and it's pretty huge.  There's one thing that I've always felt really bad about, though: it's a REAL fox's tail.  But despite that, I do feel much closer to my furriness when I wear it.  Anyway, I wear it out on very informal occasions (friend's houses, going shopping, etc.), and I've gotten nothing but positive comments and curious questions about it.  I want to wear it out everywhere (including college) but my mom would never let me.  I'm thinking of doing it anyway, as everyone I know already knows I'm a furry, but this may put a strain on our relationship.

If you commute, keep it in your car.  If you live on campus, keep it in your room.

One of my "used to be" friends would wear his tail during our classes.  Needless to say, our Japanese professors love furries, so we get no flack for it.

Yeah, technically I'm allowed to wear my tail during classes (which would be ideal), but it really depends on the professor's view and his/her overall bias against you in the class.

Hah... haha... huh...

So... There's a furmeet I'm going to two Fridays from now, and I just found out that one of my friends' 24th birthday shindig is going to be at the same mall as the meet, slightly overlapping timewise.  This friend doesn't know I'm furry.  Her husband doesn't either -- though he knows what it is and I'm fairly certain he's got a bad impression of it.

Heh, I'm thinking I might just wear the tail to both events anyway...  But even if I don't there's a pretty good chance they'll see me hanging with furs.  This could get interesting... ^_^

EDIT:  Question.  Last time I wore the tail out, right I had finally stopped being paranoid the the thing would fall off, I sat down and guess what happened?  It fell off.  The clasp looks like a standard jewelry clasp for a necklace, and I had it attached to a single belt loop.  The clasp had come undone.  What do you guys do to keep the thing from falling off?
Title: Re: Wearing a tail in public
Post by: Relaxing Dragon on October 01, 2008, 07:53:48 pm
Mine has two loops, and it goes through a belt. Keeps it on nice and secure, so long as I keep the belt tight.

So, my job completely rocks! Everyone at work loves the tail (especially my manager; she adores it, and is currently making me a pair of ears to wear with it), and the customers always like seeing it. I wear it every time I work, and am going to get more use of it over the next month then at all the conventions I'm going to go to over the next year. Plus, I started wearing all my badges on the little apron they give us to wear, so now I've got flair (:

If it wasn't for all the shoplifters dragging the mood down, I'd go ahead and name it Best Part-time Job Ever :D
Title: Re: Wearing a tail in public

RD that's awesome ^..^

Rick, mine has 2 loops as well.  They're easy to make, just get some thick fabric(we're talking near belt-thickness), fold in half, cut, sew to yer tail, then just run yer belt through.  If you sew it right your pants will (literally) fall apart before you break the tail(already lost 1 pair of shorts from the weight of my tail gradually pulling the belt loop and pockets loose, that was playing ddr constantly though). (:

Of course, safety pins have worked for myself. Only once or twice have I had one safety pin pop off, then start poking me in the but (I was playing DDR and didn't want to stop to fix it). It's an option if you like to wear shorts. (no belt needed)

The only problem I ever had with pins is them comming unstuck when you acidentally catch your tail on something or sit down to fast. I can't tell you how many times I've sat down only to jump up yelping because I sat on the pin.  (:

Ouch!

My tail's has a chain-loop, so I usually double or triple it around my belt loop before clasping it.  That takes a lot of pressure off of the clasp.

Yep, what Jake's got is exactly the same as mine, and it works like a charm. Stays on, good support even for bigger tails (and mine's pretty beefy, all things considered) and easy to use.

Like I mentioned awhile ago (in a 'greetings' post), I have a nice black n' white tail that I bought during GenCon Indy (mid-August) off this year. ^^

I used to wear it out all the time, but I recently moved and can't seem to find my tail in any of the boxes  :'( But, the boxing will eventually start and end and I'm sure I'll be able to wear it once more soon enough (a couple months at the latest). =^-^=  My mum and dad really liked it when I showed it to them (mum thought it was adorable, but made me take it off on the way home because we were eating at McDonalds and didn't want me getting grease in the fur xDD;)

^^ Thanks Josh... Temperance's tails are very nice indeed :D

Indubitably ^..^

If you pull some stuffing out of the very top of the tail (or squish it down further) you can flatten it out a bit and let yer shirt hang over, so the tail seems to 'come out of nowhere', looks a bit more natural  (:

I finally got my tail and have been wearing it around campus every so often (and will have my full suit soon to wear around sometimes soon as well), and I even wore it out to the mall and the Target this past weekend at a Furmeet. I've only had 2-3 people come up and ask me about it, and most of the time, people just kind of look the other way and don't think anything of it at all (or at least, they don't say anything out loud) and if they do say anything, it is usually about how cute it is. Then again, it is kind of in school colors and being in a big college town, people probably just thing I'm showing school spirit heh.

When I get my purple one, it might get a few more comments.

Indeed, many people are just oblivious to things like that, or are too shy to ask about em.

On a slightly related note, I got work yesterday with my gloves/paws and managed to get at least a smile out of everyone who came in (I work at a pet supply store) and occasionally a comment. I did get into a long conversation with my manager and another customer about making more furry gloves and selling them for cats to scratch and bite at while the human just has fun. :)

:p *sigh* I feel so left out, I have yet to get a tail. It's not like I don't want one, it's just that I don't have too much of a use for one, I won't be attending any cons in the near future (Or far if my luck keeps up).

Har har, who says tails can only be used in cons?  If no one is physically stopping you from wearing it, it can be quite a nice accessory on a clear day!  You can also bury yourself in the longer ones as an escape from reality, or cover your head/ears with it when someone is bugging you.  :)

Wear your tail to work day.

Only that day?

Dunno if I completely got into this before, but to reiterate: I've got the best part time job ever right now. I wear my tail every day, and everyone loves it. My co-workers think it's a bit strange when I show up and don't have the tail on. And customers are constantly asking where I got it, if we sell it (work at a Halloween store, and they're always disappointed when I say know), or just giving some general compliments :)

Still wearing it on Friday, of course. Just going to wear it as completely-unrelated part of my costume.

Also: The discussion on the previous page, about how nobody really makes a big deal of the tail in public if you don't make a big deal? I concede, you guys were right. Whenever I go to the mall to take my lunch break, I wear the tail. So far just the occasional odd look and one kid wondering why I was wearing it ("Well, why not?"... OK, I lie, I wish I said that. I just said "Because I want to.", and he took that). That's it, everyone else just breezes over it. So in conclusion, wear your tail out! Don't be shy! (:

Well I live with my father still and he probably wouldn't care, I'm always doing something odd or goofy, like spending an entire day dressed funny.
But even so I'm a very frugal person and I can't see much day-to-day use I'd get out of a tail, as much as I want one the financial demon in my head simply won't stop pestering me.
A taail is something you really kinda either order off the net or make yourself, I'm not handy with needle and thread so that leaves ordering. I really only make purchases like that on a whim when I'm at wal-mart or a dollar store or something, follow me?

I'd easily grab a tail for myself if I were walking through a store and found a good looking one that suit me, but as it stands my frugal-ness just won't allow me to. :'(

Today (Halloween) I wore my tail as a part of my wolf costume (its extent being ears, facepaint and the tail).  Surprisingly, even though wolves are known to have tails, it was the only thing on my costume that people DIDN'T see.  The tail is pretty big, so it was entertaining hearing "wait . . . you have a tail?"

I still freak out too! Occasionally I'd wear a tail to school, and I've seen others do it, but I get so nervous that I usually take it off at some point. XD On the other hand, when it comes to putting on a mask or arms? I can barely stay out of them. It's rather odd, actually!

I'm like several other people here already; the 1st couple minutes i wore a tail in public i almost try to walk so others cant see it or my collars, but after a few minutes i get over it and proudly let it sway... after a little bit i start to really enjoy the turning heads.

I don't currently own a tail but for Halloween (even though it's not really celebrated in Australia much) my friend let me borrow her long, black cat tail and ears! I really enjoyed it, it was really fun thing to have, even though not many people saw me my friends thought it was cute and my young friend kept calling me "kawaii" it was really enjoyable, I can't wait to make my own grey wolfy tail though, I've wanted one since I was a wee little cub :D

As of today, I've upgraded. I now own two identical fox tails, so rather than being sensible and wearing them one at a time, I have now become...

Kitsune 2.0!

...i.e. I'm wearing both at once. Surprisingly, it doesn't seem to affect my back so badly when I sit down; I get thrown so off balance by curling my tail up to one side of me, and it tends to hurt my lower back and hips after a while. With two, it balances out.

How come it hurts you back how much does each tail weigh.

It's not that each weighs any great deal. I have a mild scoliosis that can make it painful for me to sit a certain way, or stand erect without moving for an extended period of time. With a tail, one has to sit in a bit of a twisted fashion, which becomes quite painful to me after about ten minutes if I can't put it through a hole in the chair.

Fluffy enough that you can't help but notice. I'm getting a new set of fox ears made soon, so I plan to be attracting a lot more attention to myself in the near future. (Mostly I just do this for the weird looks. It's a hobby.) Oddly enough, I find that just a pair of ears on a headband is a bit gaudy, but if you make them separately and put them on a straw hat, they look stylish.

I have a tail, but it looks too much like a fox's.  I love wearing it, but ever since I incorporated a bit of skunk into my fursona, it's a tad inaccurate.  Ideally, I would want a large, wolf-shape, skunk-striped thing, but with the stripe less pronounced.  I could save the trouble of explanation by calling it a clean hybrid tail.  I wonder if there are any good tailers in Miami?

Yesterday I went for a walk in ears and a tail.  Some people in a red truck sped past, yelled things at me and gave me the finger.  The rounded the corner, turned around, and did the same going the other direction.  Mere seconds later a blue truck pulls up next to me, slows to the point of nearly stopping so that the occupants could take pictures, wave, scream, and give me a thumbs up.

I totally think the latter makes up for the former.

I'd like a tail... but it'd be pricey... and large... and i'd be skiddish to wear it in public, haha.

TOTALY, thats awesome :D

I've got my own fox tail (even if fox isn't my fursona/therian animal, it's still in the canine family anywho) and collar with a tag with "Kohitsu" written on it that I wear alot in public (collar is an everyday thing, tail is used only occasionally).

I even made pants specially so i could wear it underneath them and the tail has it's own hole.
It make it look even more realistic.

I've put a hole in a pair of jeans. All I did was scissor a VERY tiny hole, and am trying to figure out a way to keep the hole from stretching. Does denim singe? =/ Eh, I hope I didn't ruin a good pair of jeans. How did you go about making the hole in your pants?

well i started by taking the seam apart and then reinforsince the new edges with another seam, and then re sew the edges of the seam where the fabric reconects to keep if from continuing to rip the seam.
works really well. :)

Aw man, why didn't I think of ripping the seam and reinforcing it?! X_X Now I think I can't salvage the jeans, meh. If only I can figure out a way to keep the hole from stretching. Dang it, I should think before I do something, lol. ^_^;

If you have a sewing machine, just sew around the hole a couple times to reinforce the fabric around the hole so it will stop the fabric from taring.

I made thumb holes in a long-sleeve shirt of mine and reinforced like that.  I beat the hell out of my clothing and that shirt's managed to hold up for over 10 years (which amazes me to NO end), so there's certainly something to be said for some simply stitching around the hole.  Depending on how tight you wear your pants and what exactly you do in them you may find that you need to re-stitch every now and then.  Give them a good once over and check them out and tug at the hole after washing every now and then and you should be good.

Take my advice, just ask.

Has anyone ever thought of just sewing the tail directly to the jeans? You could sew on a button/Velcro to both ends to make it removable, and you won't kill a pair of jeans.

another thing people do is just have some straps at the end of the tail and tie it around a belt loop.

My tail is attached to a string that I usually wear and put the strings through the belt loops of my pants. But ever since wearing my tail in the 'anatomically correct' place it's supposed to be, it feels like the real thing! You should try it if you haven't, you'll never go back! I put the strings through the hole in the pants and tie the string around my waist under my pants (another pro to wearing it this way, no one sees the strings if you're shirt isn't big enough to cover it if you just wore it like a belt). Like if someone were to just brush up against my tail, I could feel it! I just need to sew the hole so it doesn't rip open into a bigger hole anymore. -__-;

This is exactly what I did with mine. I made it so the belt held the top of the tail right next to my tail bone nice and snugly, and when ever anything touches the tail the movement is instantly transfered into my tailbone. It's so cool :)

I had an interesting experience the other day, i had been wearing my tail the majority of the day and was quit used to moving around with it, and just flopping into chair with out landing on it wrong.

I was sitting at my computer watching tv, with my tail curled back on top of me, a i had to think about it a little bit, but i got such a strong phantom tail feeling, like it was my tail just numb and unable to move on its own.
Like I could feel its position the same way you can touch your fingertips together with your eyes shut. It was so strong at some points where I felt like it was my tail, but the muscles were just to week to move it.

It was an incredibly weird feeling.

It's amazing what the mind can do if you want something bad enough  (:

I've been wearing my tail around for about a month now, but I've been cheating...until a few days ago, I always wore my long trenchcoat over top of it, and so hardly anyone saw it.  The other day though it was very warm out and I abandoned the coat...I was scared people would make something of it, but I didn't even turn any heads (and this is a big fluffy grey tail on a kid who wears all black :o ).

Phantom tail -- such an intriguing phenomenon.  Even when a fur ISN'T wearing a tail, it still sometimes takes place.  In fact, tailless seems to be the most conducive state for a false awareness of such a tail.  It's a psychological event, no doubt, but I believe it could have ties to the biological aspect of the brain.

Now, it would fulfill many a dream if we could somehow live our lives with the tail we want -- a purely biological and REAL tail.  But many say this is impossible (at least to an extent); impossible to install something foreign and have the brain be able to wag it when you're happy, and scream when it gets caught in a door.  But keep one principle in mind: the fact that the brain is plastic, per se; that it can change and evolve drastically, even as an adult.  Let's take a brief look, now, at the sensory cortexes of the brain, the areas that control both movement and physical feeling.  Each and every part of the body corresponds to a different little section of the somatosensory cotex.  A tap on the shoulder produces activity in one part, while a tickle to the nose activates another.  But what about people born with deformities -- extra fingers, or flaps that shouldn't exist?  They can still feel and move these extra parts, which means the brain has developed new areas of the sensory cortex.  It has adapted.

Now where to high heck am I going with all of this?  Well, if someone were to be able to install a real tail into the body (that means the vascular, muscle, skeletal, and nervous systems flawlessly fused with the body's), then the brain by this logic would be able to eventually adapt and manipulate this new appendage, especially if it's wired up to the nervous system.

What does all of this have to do with Phantom Tails?  Nothing really.  But it helps give insight into how this phenomenon is produced.  The mind, if it works hard enough, can trick its cortexes into thinking they have extra areas, just as a dreaming mind can trick itself into believing it is flying (DBZ style, of course).  In the case of Hayaikawa above, the mind tricked itself, which was made easier by the visual (and possibly olfactory) stimulus of the fake tail.  When it received no movement feedback from the tail, it felt as though the tail was paralyzed, until the phantom feeling went away.

In time, we may be able to induce phantom tail states at will, once we are able to understand it fully.  This might give us an advantage in the future when we develop the technology to integrate tails flawlessly into our systems.

In time, we may be able to induce phantom tail states at will, once we are able to understand it fully.  This might give us an advantage in the future when we develop the technology to integrate tails flawlessly into our systems.

I can induce my phantom tail and ears at will.  And do so regularly to keep in practice.  I can also move my phantom limbs at will.  I've been working on it for almost 3 years now to get to this point tho.  I've just recently been able to see my phantom ears.  If I look into a mirror and let my eyes go out of focus I can see a slight ghost of a shadow, but as soon as my eyes try to focus in on them, their gone.

I've had the phantoms for so long now that they now react on instinct.  Like if I hear a sound of interest my ears perk, or if I'm relaxed and happy my tail will wag.  I'm aware of their movement but I don't consciously initialize it.

Also, a warning to those of you that are beginning to get phantoms.  If they get strong enough it is possible to feel pain if they get hurt.  Examples: closing your tail in a door, or brushing roughly over your ears.  Once your brain has been convinced that there really is a limb there you will feel real pain.  I speak from experience(unfortunately). :'(  Biggest headache I've ever had was when my ears got rolled up in a car window. x_x(long story)

I can't wait for when they(doctors/scientists) figure out how to successfully attach a working tail to a human.  I'll be one of the first in line! :)

I think it's possible you could get a surgically created tail, just cartilage or even fat. Now making nerves so you can move it like another limb? That's a different story.

There's me at Sakuracon, wearing the tail I bought there. It's actually a rabbit hide rolled up to look like a tail, but oh well! It doesn't fit my fursona at all, but it's nice to have around since it's sooooo soft.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/new_model_no_15/Sakuracon%2009/IMG_4702.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/new_model_no_15/Sakuracon%2009/IMG_4702.jpg)

Here it is just laying somewhere. It's got a ball chain clasp thing, so I can attach and detach it from my pants whenever I want!

I wear it to school sometimes, and nobody's told me to yiff in hell. People will either make fun of me a little, or compliment me on it :D Soon, though, I'm going to try and get a long cat tail... I'm already kind of working on the fursuit. XD

My mom broke it once, though - she yanked too hard and the chain ripped right through the hole. But then she fixed it and made it stronger! :D

Well, I would be careful not to go out to places that you know are a little sketchy, since there is always the chance that you might get harassed.

But other then that I think its a wonderful thing.
Furries shouldn't be scared to go out in public wearing things like that, just as scene kids and goths aren't scared to go out and wear what they like.
If I ever get a tail thats not huge like the one I have now, I would definitely wear it out.

I would go fursuiting in public (on cool days) if it weren't for some dumb robber's crimes that ended up getting a city ordinance in place preventing anyone from wearing masks/etc [anything that conceals your face] in public areas... >.<

Yeah I personally have really considered getting some tail to put on and perhaps wear it around some places (except school of course) but then again I still have some anxiety with what people would think of me so I might have some anxiety if I wore it around in public...hmm I should really get rid of that anxiety somehow.

You guys are lucky to have received the response from your peers as positive as you have. I confessed to most of my friends that  Iwas a Furry a few months ago and all I got was disbelief (I'm quite religious) and disgust. I have never worn a tail, nor ears in public and I would not even consider a Collar. But it will have to happen one day.

To find people who would accept me for what I am and what I believe in would be nice for a change.

My mother doesn't know i'm a fur, though I think this is one truth I will be keeping to myself. Any words of advice from the wise?

I would hazard a guess that they only see Furry as a social stigma, and are ill informed of what it is actually about. One "friend" even went as far as to say "Yiff in hell Fur Boy". Needless to say he has the two concepts entirely intwined and wrong.

A few people are still friends with me, though we don't talk about my being a fur at all and I wouldn't even bring it up.

Indeed it is. It's more of a statement for people to enlighten themself to what being a Furry is all about and not some half cooked notion that we are into bestiality.

GOING OFF TOPIC!!! Aggh, sorry, my bad.

That's what we're here for ^^  But I do understand it's different to have that sort of thing in a non-online setting...

Back more on topic... I have not worn a tail, but have recently kinda wanted to. Not sure I have the guts to wear one in public, at least not yet. Still working on getting rid of my fear of judgment...

Can't imagine that's legal for them to do. Unless you were in a private place with a dress code, and in that case it would be employees telling you.

I also can't imagine people being made uncomfortable. Bemused? Certainly, but no ill feelings. I mean, it's just a tail.

You would surmise as much, if your Law Inforcement was not as corrupt as ours is. They are more like the Good O'le Boys Club. They just do what they want, forget the law. I've watched them selling drug right out of their police cruisers, Beat people mercilessly, Frodgeulently arrest people. Every once and a while you'l hear stories on the news, where people caught them on tape beating, and taizing people. We have had about 5 or 6 deaths due to exsecive taizer useage. One case they arrested a man for drunking and disorderly behaviore in public. They Hog tied him and threw him in the back of the cuirser. when he kept cursing them. they pulled over and beggan to taizer him. They did'nt reallize it, (Im guessing) but they killed man. They shocked him so much his heart stopped. Thats what we are dealing with. I dont trust our cops. And I am sure they would stop me from wearing a tail. And the courts would agree. because our judges are just as corrupt.  :P

I'm in college now, and I wear my collar almost daily. I mostly get nice comments on it, or they don't say anything about it. I feel naked if I don't wear it. ^^;

I wore my fox tail once in college (on Halloween too, since I was easing in to the idea and it's my first year in college). I got a teacher staring at me with a bewildered look as I walked down the hall. But I don't think anyone else noticed the tail. o_O I might try wearing it again if I manage to build up the courage to bring it out again.

I haven't been aware of my phantoms for a long time, I've been out of practice. I think I felt my tail twitch last week, but that was about it. =( I used to have it wear my phantom ears were very sensitive to movement or sound.

awesome  :)

First time I wore my tail in public was great and I had a bunch of questions thrown my way (naturally) mainly from college tutors

You'll get more attention if you wear it around friends who know nothing of your furriness  :D

Yeah, I would say the same thing, its too bad all of my friends know >.>..I should be a bit more self-restraining.  Though, I did lose a bet with a friend, she's not a fur, but she still just happened to have ears and a tail lying around and made me wear it around school

I enjoy wearing a tail or 2 out in public if I have matching paws to go with it I'd wear it as well. I get a lot of comments on it and they want to feel them and I said go ahead and they tell me that they are soft. I just look at them and smile and if they ask me what is the reason I just tell them because I want to and that is who I am. If they don't like it then they can go and kiss my furry tail hole.

I just got my first tails the other day, as part of my Halloween costume. Neither tail looks much like my fursona's, but I like wearing them anyways. I wore my favorite of the two (a wolf-ish tail) to the movies and dinner with my grandma yesterday. She got a real kick out of it- said it looked cute  :P I think I made my mom feel awkward, though. She kept giving me looks all night.  :( But overall, it was fun. I got a lot of people's attention, which was interesting to me, as I'm normally a wallflower in public.
I'm hoping to get a tail that looks more like my actual tail, though. Would be awesome!  :D All big and fluffy.... :3

I don't think i'll be able to start wearing furry-wear (ears, tail, collars ect.) Til i graduate high school, I'm the least popular at school and the school already knows I'm furry (very small school, 40 kids per grade, so rumors spread over night), Though I do wear a bone-shaped dog tag saying my fursona's name on a chain.

4 of the kids at his school were wearing tails all
Week, and when asked why they said they were
furries. My nephew know what that means because
I've explained it to him, he actually said he thinks
it's cool and might want one.

Some of my friends are wanting to get and wear
tails, but they actually don't know about furry, they
just think it's cool.

Well, after wearing a fox tail everyday for almost five months, I can say that it has both been a lot of fun and been beneficial to my personality. It always kept things interesting, made me able to meet lots of new friends, and quite possibly made this semester of college the most socially awkward yet.

It seems that most guys think it's awkward and embarrassing, while most girls seem to think it is cute or interesting.
I have had a few issues with swarms of giggling asian girls chasing me around, wanting me to join their anime clubs or some such. Overall, definitely a positive experience. Yerf!

I don't have a tail, ears, or collar unfortunately. I could see myself wearing a collar though, as I do like the few necklaces I have. My only problem is a paralyzing fear of getting negative attention. I'm also worried about what my family/mate would think if I did wear a collar/tail.

I know my family would give me crap, especially my brothers, but that's what they do anyways, even if I'm being "normal".

My mate is leaning (very slightly) towards the more negative opinion of furries, just because he frequents THE INTERNET (you know what kind of "internet" I am referring too). He's the one I'm worried about the most. I don't want to weird him out or anything (then again, maybe I'm worrying about nothing, because he does LARP and enjoys anime just as much as I do).

Depending on what I find at the local ren faire this year, I might just buy a tail or some sort and be done with it. At the very least, I could bring up the topic of me getting a tail and see what people's reactions are.

But you gotta shake it off and keep going. But the majority of the people I meet like it. I also wear a black and pink wolf beanie wich I habe never gotten a bad comment on.  8)

In the end you of all people desearve your love. Dont let anyone tell you different.

Besidea, all the peoplw who ever made fun of me growing up. Say for a sellect few privaledge kids. All grew up to work in dead end careers. And live less then wonderful lives.

Just remember one thang. No one who ever did great thangs and atchieve greatness was normal.  :)

Awwww don't worry about it. i thought my family would give me crap but as soon as i told my dad that my collar wasn't part of the BDSM thing he was fine (at least for now) **notices gramatical tense fail in own typing blargh**. Negative attention used to be crippling to me but i'm starting to get used to it. It builds character.

If I was to get a collar, I'd probably get right before I go back to school from spring break, or get one before I come back over the summer. I always seem to be more confident for a few days after a long break. The collar would have to be a really thin one though, so I could work my way up slowly.

Going to a big Mall today (Discovery Mills in Georgia, if you happen to know it) to see the new Pokemon movie. They are giving out free tickets to the first people there to promote the new games, mostly.  (:

Think I'll wear my tail when I go. It'll be fun.  :D

I freqiently wear my tail in public in my civilian cloth. And yeah somwtimes you get people who think its funny. And even the random looser who is affended by your merre existance.

I've worn ears and tail to restaurants (usually when eating out during furry conventions), to cons, to a local goth club night, and even on late-night grocery store runs.  In all cases, I have generally gotten positive reactions.  Waitstaff and people eating at restaurants usually get excited, ask me questions, and ask what's going on (especially if there's a con in town and they've seen lots of people wearing costuming).  I got a couple of compliments at the goth club, and one guy excitedly asked me where I got my ears because he wanted a pair.  When I went out to the store wearing my ears late one night, I saw a guy look directly at me then heard him murmur to the chick accompanying him, "That's so hot."  So yeah, positive reactions mostly.

The most negative reactions were:
1. A little kid that looked at me and said, "That's not a REAL tail."  That was more amusing than anything though.
2.  Some older drunk guy who started hitting on me by making comments about my fox ears and tail.  Was kind of annoying, but I guess it's better than someone actually having a problem with the costuming.

Reporting back in:

Grandpa was laid-back, as always. Grandma was on the phone and made a sour face when she saw the tail.  Later she was obviously flustered when she asked "what is THAT?" but she laughed when I explained what it was.  I also mentioned MFF, and Grandma seemed to think my cousin would like to go, too (my cousin is a huge Star Wars/Potter/Pirates fan, so she's not a stranger to costuming).  I wish I could have taken a picture!  :D

Most (but not quite all) fursuit makers also accept tail commissions, and are happy to ship the finished product to customers.  If shipping doesn't work for you, then from what I've read elsewhere on the forums, there are a few... "trendy" stores such as Hot Topic that might sell tails (I don't know if that particular store exists in California; if it doesn't, look for stores that sell niche trend clothing for teens).

I wore my tail to Disneyland yesterday. Anthro is part of the fantasy there at the park so I figured it would hardly be noticed. I got 4 reactions. 1) a kid walking behind me yelled out "Hey I like your tail!" 2) a girl (8th or 9th grade) asked me where I got my tail 3) a mom in line behind me the same question, where I got it, and I said from an annual convention in LA 4) a girl yelled out "He has a tail!!! Is he a raccoon???"

All in all, a pretty good day to wear a tail.  ;)

Both my mate and I used to wear tails in public (He more then me, I always felt awkward with a long tail, as my fursona doesn't have one!) but that kind of stuff we have to save for specific furry gatherings anymore. We're both working in professional fields now, and it wouldn't due to have any awkward questions come up!  Heaven forbid a coworker saw one of us with a fabric cat tail strapped to the backs of our pants! :o I would love to get some hoof shoes though.

I have the same awkwardness wearing a tail, a fox tail I won at a Furry con, because I am a bear not a fox. One way was the idea of creating a second fursona but as I think on it I losing interest in the tail.
As for the second part I can give a hoot  what coworkers think in public. When I clock in I am on company time  when I clock out I am on my time and it is none of their business. I happen to port a Hello Kitty Back pack  ( remember I am a 51  year old male). During the week I slip into a plan back pack but take my HK back pack out  on the weekend.  I can care less what my coworkers see during the weekend.

Yeah, when I wore my tail in public for the first time I was scared but after a few times you get over it. :) But be prepared to have people make fun of you, I wear a collar to school, people make fun of me, ask me why, and bark at me. :( To be honest with you, they're just jealous because they don't have the guts to wear a tail in public or a collar. What I do if someone is mean to me I just smile and say "Hi, how is your day?" They look schocked that I'm nice to them. ;) My advice to you is go for it, don't let anyone stop you from wearing a tail in public. :)

I have worn my tail around the town twice since I made it on Tuesday. I was expecting people would try to pull it off but I got a few good and bad reactions:
-When I was sitting, a girl pointed to it and said "tail!" to her friend
-A group of girls giggled when I passed them
-A couple of guys kept looking at it when I was in a game shop
-A 10 year old told me to take it off
-I got called something that I can't say on this

It was so fun no matter what reaction I got. I have been wearing my tail all day and every day that i've had it and will continue to :) (apart from in school because we have to wear uniform)

I have recently been thinking of getting a tail. There are several problems with this though. Although I dont care what people say, I am one of those types of people who avoids a conflict at all costs. This means if a tail will raise possible problems I will feel subconcience of wearing it in public. I cant wear it at home because my dad is an anti-fur, so that would be a dead give away. Also, my fursona is a husky shepherd. Most have those tails that are bushy and curve up. I think that would be just uncomfortable, or at least get in the way. So I would probably just get a more "limp" tail. But my main problem is public exposure. I can get to where i dont do things because I want to avoid certain social dilemma. It is part of my social anxiety that I just can't shake. I dont know how people are supposed to help me, but I hope someone can. I have a desire to attain a tail, yet I fear to wear it.

Hmmm...
The best advice I can give is to simply not wear a tail.  I know that's probably what you don't want to hear, but if you say you want to avoid conflict at all costs and that wearing a tail would give you social anxiety (as well as physical uncomfortableness when it gets in the way of things), I'd say don't wear one.  Depending on how much attention you want to draw to yourself in public (basically, how subtle you want to be), I can give you some suggestions as to how to express your furriness.  I'm sure others can tell you of their experiences with wearing various furry "apparel;" I assume you've already read about these on the forums.

Maybe if you want something less restricting/intrusive, a hat with ears would do.  I've seen a lot of people wear those in public.  IMO, dog collars can have dual meanings...you can make that decision yourself.  You could always get a furry-themed shirt or something like that; I've seen hoodies that have different fur prints on them, to evoke the image of a certain animal, for example, a fox.  Or, you could put some pins on your backpack or bag that have some furry imagery on them.  Those are only a few things I can think of off the top of my head.  Hope that helped!  :)

So I bought myself a tail for my birthday (its so AWESOME!! It's a silver fox tail, super pretty and soft) and I was wearing it to school for a few weeks, before the assistant principals stopped me. Apparently, furries are considered a gang and encourage drug use. It really made me mad, but I think I figured out why they think that. It might have something to do with these people:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TPJ1uqF05w (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TPJ1uqF05w)

This annoyed me so bad. I'm a goth kid, and a furry, and these dumb kids put both terms to shame. Some kids just need attention that bad.

Just (kind of) did this for a first time... this afternoon I was in front of my house with my four year old daughter, and there were a few pieces of grass next to the planter that had gotten really long and were going to seed.  She kept calling them cat tails and then she picked a few, one she wanted to use to play with our cat, but the other she gave to me and said I should wear it, so I tied it to my back belt loop.  I didn't expect to feel different, it was just a piece of grass, but I did.  :o I wore it all afternoon, even when we went around with my mom to put up flyers for our yard sale, and I'm still wearing it now...  :) I did get a few odd looks and my mom laughed every time I got out of the car, but I don't mind, it was fun!

Aww. Firstly, I don't know where you could buy a tail. I know some people make and sell them and I saw some small tails at Hot Topic once. But you really don't need a tail to be a "real life furry." You already are one. Although, I don't doubt wearing one would be an amazing experience. 8)

I realize this probably seems like an odd solution, but if there are any Native American Pow Wows running by you (they usually run over a weekend, and are fairly common by me this time of year) you can usually find tails of all sorts at them...

If the tails are made with real animal fur, then most furries are a bit reluctant or opposed to wearing something like that.  :P

Wearing a tail in public is most awesome.  Ive been doing it all summer to many places.  99 percent of the reactions i get are good and I ignore the rest.  If it makes you happy as it does me, then do it. The worst regret in life is risks not taken and paths not walked.

I wear my tail around as much as I can. I've gotten into many an argument with my parents and grandparents about going out in public with it on XD and that was before I got my big tail, haha. The only problem I've run into was once at the mall, where some kid came up and pulled it, and he ended up pulling it off and breaking it, which I was NOT pleased about. But, it's fixed now, and I've just learned to be more careful when I go out in public with it, just in case. I don't think anyone should feel scared or ashamed to wear their tails or ears or anything else in public. It may garner some weird looks or nasty comments, but those don't hinder the beautiful and complete feeling I get from wearing my tail. I feel far more scared in public without my tail. Just hold your head high and think about the fact that you know who you are inside, while the others who make fun of you or mock and insult you most likely do not.

I say go ahead and wear things like ears and tails in public! There is nothing wrong with that. You're not harming anyone.

It's more like there is something wrong with the people who are control freaks, who like to enforce conformity and shun/bully/hate anyone who is "different".

What is normal anyway? We're all different in some way and have things about ourselves that someone else will label weird.

Sorry for the exclamation mark and bold "is". I just get worked up about this sort of thing, like when controlling people want to dictate what clothes other people can wear.

As for me, I've worn my winter hat with ears while out grocery shopping, edit though not a tail.

Edit Also split long paragraphs into smaller paragraphs, switched a few words around.

I a not sure whether I have posted here befor...oh well. Well, I have a tail but my mother wont let me wear to school. But, anyway, at hot topic they sell "keychains" that are fairly long, and can be clipped onto belts. They are made of faux fur, for you enviormentalists (although why a furry would WANT to wear real fur is beyond me). They come in, like, five colors, and they are perfect for people who have a fursona without a speciefic tail. Like, it wouldnt look right on a fox, but a wolf could pull it off, or maybe a dog, they kindas look K9ish. If you are a feline, I highly recomend looking into cosplay supplies (Nekos, supplying furries with cheap alternatives since they started. We love you cosplayers!)

I tail to school on Fridays and wear it around the house most of the time. When I tail to school most don't notice it, but when they do, they normally say positive things or ask how it was made. (my high school is very accepting... I really don't know why.... I was expecting at least SOMEONE to be an idiot, but not complaining....) I'm allowed to wear it only on Fridays because my mom thinks its childish and id get picked on, but as I said earlier, I don't. Its a brown cat tail I made myself.

We currently don't own a tail, but we will one day. If we did own one, we could only really wear it at home or at the meetups we are now going to. School is ruled out because we would get picked on even more, and it would probably get damaged or destroyed in one day, thus defeating the purpose. Once college starts, it will be a whole new story since we get a new start with new people who (hopefully) are more mature than the high school people we are stuck with. Come on, time. You can go faster than this!  (:

I use to have a cat tail I use to wear all the time (I still have it, I just don't wear it), but my school told me I wasn't allowed wearing it anymore when I first started. I also remember back at home (I'm currently in college), at our local Chinese restaurant there was a little boy who always got really excited to see me whenever I had the tail on and would always yank it.

That might've been me. The only reason why my school won't allow me to wear it is because I go to a business college and it's not professional, which I see what they mean, but at the same time I'm in their entertainment production program (i.e. art kid).

I wanna wear mine again too the place I went to during Furry Weekend Atlanta just to see if they remember me, as I'm probably the only person that's attended there restaurant, while wearing a tail, collar, and high quality straight jacket. I also plan to wear mine after I transfer to UNCA to classes starting in Fall 2014, since I'll be in a new town and all that so I can kind of start over XD and just be that Weird Shy Gothic Furry Nerd again XDDD

I would like to get a tail, but my parents don't even know that I'm a furry. Although if questions start being asked I have already written a 1200 word 2 1/2 page essay so I could easily explain myself.

If I ever get a tail I would most likely just wear it around the house because I have no self-confidence whatsoever, but then again I might wear it public and screw dignity just because I like being 'different'.

There are people who really think a tail gives a bad image, I don't understand how since it doesn't identify immediately with anything illegal or negative. Not many people seem to know what furry is so I don't worry about the stereotype, I wouldn't be bothered to say that I am a furry but it would take too much time to explain it. I decided to wear my tail anyways, no one can say its wrong.

I can kind of see where they're coming from.  Like every alternative style of dress, a person should be able to turn it off, and while it might be a way to have fun, it shuldn't be a requirement for fun.  There should be a little consideration before just going out wearing a tail, since while it isn't doing anything wrong, it might be inappropriate for the setting or look a bit 'off'.  Before wearing it out, you should ask yourself "Where am I going?  Who am I with?  What else will I be wearing?  Is there any special occasion?"
If you're going to be some place crowded or where people are going to be trying to work or concentrate, it probably isn't a great idea since they can be a bit distracting and can also accidentally hit somebody or invade their space.  If you're with a group of friends, generally you can get away with a little bit more 'fun' ways of dressing, even if they aren't also wearing tails.  I think of tails as accessories, so they should make sense with your outfit.  A tail paired with some sweats is going to look worse and somehow stranger than if paired with a full subculture outfit.  And finally, if there is a formal event you're attending, unless otherwise stated, leave it at home.  If it's a costume party, meet-up, or generally a 'fun day' go right ahead.

I really want to get a tail and wear it around, but I live in a small town area where nobody knows what a furry is, I know a few that do but they just know what it is, they are not furries. But I don't think I should wear ears and a tail around, people at my school would take them and then hide them somewhere then burn them or even just throw them in the dump somewhere where I couldn't find them. I feel if I had someone else that would do this with me, this wouldn't happen but yea I'm out of luck :(

I'm going to Atlanta again in two months, and but of course I got reservations at one of the most fancy high class restaurants in Atlanta again, and but of course I plan to wear my tail when I go along with my collar, tripp pants, and straight jacket; I may wear a wig and ears not decided yet. However I'll also be in the company of about 4 other cosplayers (My sister and friends whole will also probably all have tails as well). surprised they didn't get all blarg about that

Well it's partially because I work there but I was surprised as well  :D

I wore one of mine to Disneyland.  Some of the staff were like "Omg, that's cute!"

@bkatt500: I was going more along the lines of dangling item on a roller coaster = usually frowned upon

I think in general most coasters you sit, so unless it's really, really, long, you'll just sit on it with it contained in the car and it wouldn't dangle at all.  Like the tip might peek out if you point it towards the door, but probably by even less than a tall person's knee would.

True, depends on the type of roller coaster...

My fursona is a husky and I would LOVE to have a tail! I have only seen one other person in my city that wears a tail and have seen zero fursuiters (besides mascots of coarse) I am involved with the scouts as an assistant scout master and I wore my husky hat with paws type hat (very fluffy) to a campout I had lots of complements on it and my Scoutmaster said "You can be who you are in scouts and no one will judge you" He also said if I wanted to get in touch with my "inner stuffed animal I could" know one knows I'm a furry though.   :D

I already wear a collar, and will wear my tail around once I get around to making it XD a very large percentage of the kids in my school (Like 35%) are Furries, and a lot of them wear Furry things (ears, tails) lol, but surprisingly, I'm the only one I know of who wears a collar XD

I would love to get a tail, although I would feel very awkward since my furson'a tail is very long, and not only that, it's forked into two. I live in the country where only old fat drunken rednecks live, it's very boring and I feel like I'm surrounded by idiots. I've never seen someone wearing a tail or ears in public, nor would I expect someone to. Around here, if you even like animals and draw them all the time, people think you're weird. Imagine someone asking me about my tail, and having to explain it to them... man, would they freak out.

Not in school. No. nononononono (I don't even think they would let you wear a tail... I mean, they won't let you wear hats. I got yelled at for wearing a TARDIS laplander. YEAH BECAUSE A TARDIS LAPLANDER IS TOTALLY A HAT THAT VIOLENT GANGSTERS WEAR).

Although if I were to go to a con, I would proudly wear my tail. I'm not going to buy a fursuit yet, because 1. Money 2. I'm still growing 3. MONEY

But I would love a tail... it's really cool, I would just fling it around all the time.

Now I want a tail :(

I've been thinkin
and I will do it on Thursday at the fire meet
other furs have shown up and as of last week they all know I have a tail in my possession
it went like this with a girl wearing a panther tail "hey is that a cat tail" I said "yah you wanna try it on?" she said
then I said "no thanks I have my own", then she said "really were is it?" by that time all the people at the meet were looking at me, then I turned my eyes towards my backpack "yah its in there" I said "really!" she said "why don't you wear it?"
then in a quiet reply I said "they are watching me (refuring to all the other kids from school that were watching the show)"
then she reacted as id it didn't matter "what at school they care but now, no one cares"

but I've been thinking about it for a while
would like some feedback before I do it :goldglee:

I find it a ton easier to do with other furries around.  Then it feels like there's a point to it.  Otherwise I just feel like i'm drawing attention to myself for no reason at all.

I once wore tails with furry friends while we were playing pool,  and some folks approached us who wanted to know all about the tails.  Green reaper started asking them why they didn't have any which was amusing... But together we were all able to give a pretty good explanation.  Was a lot of fun.

I've been wearing mine around for the past two weeks.  For the most part, it's been uneventful (which is fine with me), excepting one person who reacted rather loudly: "what the heck?!?! Please tell me you're not a furry!!" (I told him, "Yes, I am")
I expect gossip to do it's job in the coming days... That's fine though, because I don't even know him that well, nor care what anyone thinks. :P

I have learned that wearing a tail tells me a lot about the people around me; I appreciate the people who simply ask "Hey, what's that? Why are you wearing it?" over the people who just stop in their tracks and gawk, but quickly look away and pretend they weren't staring when I look at them.  It's just really unnerving to realize people I don't know are watching me (though I suppose that's just the price you have to pay wearing a giant fluffy tail around).  People who ask tend to be friendlier about it, and go about there business without making a big deal of it after I explain.

My mother won't let me wear any of my tails in public. (Though she did once let me wear an ear-hat out.) Inside the house, however, is fine. I haven't openly told her that I'm a Furry, but she knows I wear ears and tails (they're pretty hard to not see :D) , and she has told me, "You're not making one of those suits", so she clearly knows something. Any ideas for convincing her to let me wear tails/ears outside?
Title: Re: Wearing a tail in public
Post by: greenfox on October 31, 2014, 12:50:31 am
If she hasn't explicitly said "no", then I'd go ahead and do it, making it seem like "not a big deal".  Hopefully, if she even to notices at that point, she would realize that she doesn't really need to be concerned because it's not having any serious effects.  I think in many cases, the act of bringing it up to ask permission makes it seem like a bigger deal than it is (and therefore more concerning to your parents).

Otherwise, at least you have halloween as an excuse (which you could *probably* stretch to cover the weekend as well :P)
Title: Re: Wearing a tail in public
Post by: Kahlayna on November 02, 2014, 11:26:26 pm
She has said "no", despite my acting like it's perfectly normal to wear a great big fluffy thing  (well maybe not hugely fluffy) on ones behind, and like it's normal to wear cat/dog/wolf ears atop ones head while trying to leave the house. I make them myself, and no animals are harmed in the making of them, so the only problem my Mum could reasonably have with them in my opinion is social norms, and we've recently moved from a pretty rough area into a little village where everyone seems to be friendly, so I don't see why I'm not allowed now. Meh; less than two years before I can make my own decisions. Then... Chaos shall reign! No... um... Then I will be able to wear them freely.
Though on Hallowe'en I was at a friends house, and we went round in the daytime, she wearing my fake ears, I wearing my yarn tail. It was extremely amusing to see all the people pretending not to notice.  :D (:

My mom doesn't seem to have a problem with me wearing a tail out in public. However, she draws the line at formal public outings (i.e. dinner/lunch with extended family in resturaunts). I can underatand her reasoning there and am happy to go tailless. Though I do take my purse, which has the twp tail keychains I owe. She hasn't said anything about the keychains, so I guess they're fine.

I go to a creative arts school, so a lot of people wear tails. X3
I got mine made by a friend, blue and black striped ( http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2itpvnt&s=9#.Vkz_ZMBb2hA ). He put a squeaker in it, and I've worn it everyday since I got it last week. I love the way it bounces when I walk, and I squeak it to punctuate jokes, or to say hi to my friends in the hallway. I never really thought of it being a weird thing, because I've only gotten compliments, but I suppose a lot of people aren't as accepted in school or work. Wearing a tail is really fun, and if you're on the fence about it, I say go for it!

I have a tail--a pretty handsome gray-white-black fox tail, if I may say so--which is part of a partial fursuit. I'm getting a second partial fursuit soon, which comes with an all-black tail. Would I wear the tail in public? No, unless I've got the entire partial on. Closest thing I did to wearing that in public was to walk out of a convention hotel and across a large parking lot.

I would go for detachable belt ones if you can. Being able to move the tail around while you're out and about so you don't end up sitting on it or getting it tugged and wrecked is a huuuuge plus. Also makes it easier to take on an off (I made mine so I can just unbutton and untie it to take it off)

Those are the two I wear. Maybe the fact that I'm living in Toronto but I hardly get bothered. You'll get odd looks and kids occasionally asking why you're wearing it but I don't get hassled by people.

Then again I usually look either emotionless, or angry, so people steer clear hahaha.

I wish I had the confidence to wear my tail in public. But I'm a lone furry with social anxiety and a very long past of being bullied. Going out by myself with a tail on I just don't have the courage to. My friend says she doesn't mind if I do. Well around where I live anyway and after dark... However she just bought a fox ears hood and paws from me without even being a Furry  :)
