Title: Why do you wear your collar, tail, ears, ect.?

So I've been looking around at the treads here and I keep seeing things like...  I got my tail!, or I wore my tail in public!, or see my new collar!

Those threads are awesome but I already know that you wear a collar/tail/ears/ ect.  I mean we're furries right?  Thats what we do. :)  What I'm wondering is why you do.

I wear my collar all the time to symbolize to others that I'm a furry and to have a place (other than a keychain) for my cute little trinkets.  Like my little metal dog paw and such.  I wear my tail to be different and to see the reactions I can get out of people.

So what are your reasons to wear a collar or other furry clothing/accessories?

It may have something to do with keeping connected to your fursona, but then again, I'm either a red panda, or a lynx, so I don't know for sure, so neither of those animals even wear collars!

That aside, Its somewhat of a fashion statement, saying "I'm not afraid to show who I am", but to a point, its like trying to pass a message on. 

When people ask me why I wear my collar, I usually respond with "Personal reasons," or "trying to make a statement".  Their responses "How can you make a statement if you won't tell somebody what the statement is?

The statement, is that you're a fur, yes, obvious.  Though, to some, or some that aren't quite as open as I am around friends, he or she might keep to themselves.  If the person wondering has any curiosity, or the guts to ask, he or she will.  This happened once.

Random girl: "...are you a furry >.<?"

Me: "yeah, actually, I am"

Her: "so am I >.<!!!!" *Runs away*

Never saw her again, but oh well

Hmmm... what about fursuits? I think it was kobuk who made a thread like that earlier...

Anyways, I don't have a collar, nor 'just' ears/tail; I like to make and wear fursuits simply for the creative fun of it, and the enjoyment of physically fitting my self perception a bit better too...

i wear my collar to holp connect me to animals, i've always had pets and the gingle was always a very happy noise in my life, so if i wear something that gives of that sound it makes me happy in un itself.

plus its got the furry fandom connection, but now that i've worn my collar for over a year, it truly has become a part of who i am and i will always wear it now.

as for my tail and ears, thats truly a fursona connection. specially the tail.

but i havnt worn my ears in so long its gonna be odd going back to wearing them alot more, but i really want to ^.^

Cool thanks guys. ^_^  I'm a very curious fox and was just wondering if everyone wore theirs for the same reason I do.

Oh and shim, I had a similar experience to yours.  One of my friends brought this random girl with him when we were hanging out once.  She took one look at me and said "your a furry aren't you."  I was kinda shocked at the bluntness but said "yea, I am."  and she was like "your a fox.  I have a friend that's a wolf."  And that was it.  She didn't say anything else the whole time we were hanging out, and I haven;t seen her since.  It was weird.   It wasn't like she was trying to be mean either.  She said it like a statement.  And I just had my collar on, no tail.  So I don;t know how she knew I was a fox.  That was the weirdest part.

I guess I really wear it for a few reasons.
-First, and fore most, as a sign I am a furry (if anyone notices/knows).
-Secondly...I'm just weird like that. I like to kinda throw older elements of the punk/goth scene in when I can, and collars were a part of it to some degree. Even if mine is very obviously a dog collar.
-Lastly, and I can't really explain this one, it just makes me more comfortable to have on a collar. Which is very odd in that I don't generally like anything around my neck that tight/close, or I start to panic and freak out. But yet I still more comfortable and calm if I able to wear my collar.

I actually started wearing one on occasion before I knew about furries. But then wore one a great deal when I was living on campus and going to college. And still wear one on occasion now, if I get the urge.

I had a similar experience to what was said earlier too; it was great. I was getting a cup of coffee (which was pretty much keeping me alive then) and the lady that ran the coffee bar in the dining hall noticed it. She asked if i was a furry. So I said yes. Then she went on to tell me a friend of her's was too, and that I should get a tag that had my "funny little name on it", I believe she put it. Was a real nice person, that one.

I guess, wearing it makes me feel unique.  Walking through a highschool of 5000, you feel like you're nothing.  Its odd, because usually, I don't like to attract that type of attention.  Now, as I'm wearing it, I feel unique.  And when I take it off, I'm just every other boring, mundane person out there

I wear my collar for a non-furry reason. I'm a collared submissive, so wearing it signifies that I have someone who loves me, someone I take care of, and someone I belong to. Being collared is a subtle reminder that I need to behave in a way that would make my partner proud of me. ^-^

When I wear my ears (still awaiting my tail) I wear them because they're cute. That's pretty much it. I don't feel the need to connect to my fursona any more than I feel the need to connect to other characters I roleplay. I just like the look of ears and a tail.
Actually, there's one other reason. I feel like the ears/tail/other costume parts I hope to attain signify a different mindset. Its kind of like I'm a kid playing dress up. I get to act sillier when I'm wearing them.

I don't have any ears or tails myself but I would totally wear a tail and ears. I own paws though but they're white and i dont want them getting dirty.

I like to wear things like that because I think the style is adorable. Like those cat boys or dog boys or anything you see in japanese animation. Just so cute ^^

Yeah, I just got my collar  (: yesterday for 5 bucks at petsmart. It's just a simple blue nylon collar that I put a yellow pin-on button to. Although I have to admit I felt kinda silly trying out the different sizes in the store to see which one fit me. (I'm a medium by the way) The only problem is that my school has a dresscode.

HOWEVER

My dresscode states: "Shirts with collars are expected."

MWAHAHAHAHA!

Well I wear a collar not for a goth thing even though goths wear collars but most of them have spikes or a lot of "D" rings on it. I just have a connection to animals especially the canine ones. Now for wild dogs they don't wear collars unless they were tamed by a human that has raised them when they were abandoned by there mothers/pack. I wear ears/tails/paws because I love how they feel and I want to get in touch with my inner characters that I possess.

hmmm, i never really thought about why i wear my bear ears in public. i just do. it makes me feel good, i guess. i am axtremely proud to be a furry and i display it with my ears.  :D

I wear a tail, ears, and a collar on a daily basis! Im lucky that where I work its okay for me to do this. I feel like im being my true self and that I am  opening up the beast inside. Its liberating to have what you feel on the inside match whats you see on the outside. Specially with the ears, I know its not really possible but sometimes I feel like I can even hear better! And with my tail I feel that I have a stronger sense of balance! My mate and I exchanged collars on our anniversary so it is very special to me! BAsically I wear my collar and tail and ears to show my furry PRIDE!

Your workplace "allows" you to do this?  :o  :o What kind of work do you do? I would tend to think that most jobs would not allow their employees to do such things due to dress codes or something else. I find it hard to believe you can get away with this.

Ed debevics, (another restaurant "around" here.) Has their waiters just act crazy.  Dress up in weird costumes, yell and scream a lot, will occasionally sit down at your table and just start casual conversation while casually creeping toward your fries :P

I wear a collar almost all the time.  I used to get some looks, now I get compliments.  As for ears and a tail, the closest I have it as hat, given to me as a gift, which I wear when it's cold.  Because it's a hat.  Other than that, I don't have anything else.

...or self-employed, or working from home, etc.
I mean, there are sometimes logical reasons why you wouldn't wear XYZ when doing ABC though.

ie, wearing a fursuit, or a wool sweater for that matter, is a bad idea if you're doing computer commissions.  :D

Pretty much this - for me as well, anyway. Also because I think it suits me and I love the feel/look of leather.

And I'll be wearing my Bir (from FAF) tail a lot when I get it,, because it will feel as thought it's part of me  (have worn a different one around the house a lot with my Master petting/stroking it/me, it's kinda hard to explain how it feels...), so it'll simply be an extension of my fursona/cat-like personality/behaviour, I guess.

I have several collars and leashes for both furry and non-furry reasons  :-[... Well, I guess they are all furry reasons really. I also have a tail and I'm getting some handpaws. I used to wear my stuff around the house when I first got it a lot more. Now I don't wear it so much, its just effort  :D

I really enjoy wearing my collar (when no one is around). Even before I was willing to call myself a furry I would wear my dogs old collar =/

I kind of stopped wearing my collar. I still have them, but I don't wear them out in public any more. I guess when the initial thrill of it wore off I stopped seeing the point. Plus my fursona is a wolf, and we don't like wearing leashes.

Why do I wear a tail?  I dunno, it's just...fun.  I always cheer up for some reason when I have a long soft fluffy wolf tail swinging from my trousers like a furry pendulum.  Plus it makes me a little more unique, and often cheers up the days of others passing by (especially little kids (: ).

After reading everyone's responses, I think I am going to wear my collar much more often. ...*small grin*... I purchased my collar when I first got into the fandom, but was too shy to wear it out in public. (I was still very closeted...still kind of am...) But now I own a tail and am more confident about my furriness. I am going to wear them to be more confident in myself and my identity.

i wear silver cat ears because i feel my lion ears anyway just now everybody else can see them 2! i wear my dog collar because i cant find a cat collar that fits and it remindes me of my lifelong best freind, bruce, the german shepard.

I just ordered a fancy new tag (stainless steel, laser etched!) it should come in the mail in about a week. When it comes, I'll post pics of that, along with my three collars.  :)

Its more of a hobby to me. The furry culture is fun and inspiring. I've never meet a group of people more accepting or artfuly cultured. In a way its humbling to see such a mixure of art, culture, humanity, and acceptance. I wear a tail or ect. mainly for fun.

I don't own any sort of wearable furry items as yet, but I won't rule it out. Would definately love a big floofy fox tail! :P

Also, people sound a lot more accepting where everyone lives. I live in a small village and also work in a small village. Everyone knows each other and no one around these parts would know what a furry was if I told them. It would be easier if I lived in a big city like London, where people don't seem to take any notice!

On the other hand, if nobody there knows what a furry is, that means you can wear a tail and ears and not have to explain it to anyone. ;) You can just say it's a fun costume and no one will think twice.

Yup, that's me exactly. I wasn't so keen on the idea at first (First thought: "...Whaaaaaaaat?"), but I've been thinking about it. If given the chance and my parents were ok with it (They don't know a single thing about this right now), I would certainly get some.

aside from one meet i went to, Ive never worn any fur stuff out in public. I live in a very redneck city where different is bad. I also know a lot of people from multiple places and I kind of want to keep my personal life away from my public life.

I'd love to be brave enough to be able to wear a collar in public. I may wear one next time I go to the beach, but than again, my GF doesn't know I'm a fur-- although I think she'd be quite accepting of it, and may be convertible considering she had ears and a tail for Halloween and was a black cat. And if she isn't too keen on it, I can just say its an homage to Hige from Wolf's Rain (an anime she's currently having me watch). I don't have much money any more to buy stuff-- I do have a wolf tail, although I only got it because it was extremely inexpensive on furbid-- my actual fursona, the Valhund, has a more husky like tail. Never owned ears, probably wouldn't wear them.

sad day for me today,
while getting ready to go to work, when putting a shirt on i caught my collar, breaking the clasp of it.

oh well, i was getting ready for a new one anyway,
now i have an excuse to get one,
although it was weird going to work today not wearing it, i was even asked what happened to it by a few there.

I wear a tail because I want to and want to stand out. Many people around here say "omg, that's so cute etc" and I like the possitive attention. If it's negative, then it's the middle finger for them. <3~

Meep! <333 I wear my tail everywhere I possibly can. I wear it at school, and people are always either giggling and saying something nice or just completely laughing behind my back. I used to wear it because it was comfortable and if I didnt have it, I would feel broken, almost.
But nowadays... There was a dean at my school who saw my tail and gave me a lecture about it. She said it was 'inappropriate' and 'offensive'. Okay, really? I've been wearing it since the beginning of the school year, and just NOW you notice?
Now I wear it for a statement. There is nothing in the rules that says I can't wear a tail. It doesn't endanger anyone, and it doesn't interfere with the education, neither. I'm fighting this!  :D

If this "giggling" and "laughing" you refer to occurs in classrooms, then your dean might have a point.  A tail has an atypically high potential to be an attention magnet, and an attention magnet in a classroom detracts from the attention of other students who would otherwise be paying attention to the lecture material.

In such a case, wearing a tail in class is much like playing classical music on speakers in class.  It may help the one engaging in the activity, but for other people, it is distracting.  The one who is able to focus more while listening to classical music should instead listen to his/her music using headphones/earphones (after explaining to the instructor the purpose of the music) so that no other students are not distracted by the music.  In a similar sense, it may be appropriate for you to find something less distracting to other classmates that comforts you like your tail does.  Furry shirts, a collar, and/or a collar bracelet might qualify, but you might come up with other similar ideas.

Of course, what I have noted is only relevant in the context of a classroom; wearing a tail elsewhere on campus should not significantly interfere with anyone's education, and I don't think arguing this civilly (and I emphasize the "civilly" part; defensiveness neither sways hearts nor fosters good relations with faculty) should prove difficult.  Additionally, it's possible that your classmates are not significantly distracted by your tail (or, more precisely, they are not significantly more distracted by your tail than they would be if you wore particularly mundane attire), in which case the argued point is less relevant to the degree that your classmates are not distracted by your tail.

Regardless, I hope you find a favorable resolution to your present issue with wearing a tail on campus.

I've found that there seems to be a declining scale concerning the distractiveness(?) of furry accessories...something like:
Full fursuit > paws > ears > tail > collar > shirt > jewelry

The one item that is tough to pin down is the winter earhat - some people seem to completely ignore it, while others seem to find it incredibly distracting. Also, if the collar has a bell, it gets moved up to "ears" level on the scale.

I wear my tail just for the fun and style of it. I love to costume and things like that. I wear a collar because i'm submissive by nature but don't yet have an owner. It's hard to find a dominate woman who isn't into giving pain, and enjoys being with a guy who also likes to dress as a female. Yes, i'm a cross dresser. :) part of my love of cosplay and dressing up. :)

I occasionally wear a collar I got from Furtopian user Peaches during FWA 2010. I wear as a sign of submission to my partner moreso than a sign of furry. There's pawprints on it, though! XD

Actually, the laughing and giggling happens in the halls. The three classes I have don't have an issue with it. If anything, my Art teacher loves the tail, and the classmates support it. There's actually another girl that has a tail in my class as well. The other classes.. When I walked in, it brought questions up but it soon died down after a couple days. They're very accepting of it ^^

Heh, I had not worn the tail for a long time in public, but now I have a new reason to do so: the girlfriend makes me do it :-[  She looooooves that I wear my tail (the fact that she's a recently converted furry doesn't hurt either  (: ).

Wearing a tail/collar is a nice way to express "furryness" at home around friends and family, but wearing it in public is a completely different issue. I salute you guys who're brave enough to do so... and some of you even wear 'em to school, too! Crikey.

I enjoy wearing my ears because they give me something to base people off of.
If they stare maybe they are curious
If they point maybe they think it's silly/stupid
If they shrug it off, they know or don't care
If they give you this look of "I'm better than you" they only think they know
and if they stop talking to you, they weren't a real friend

Getting a collar is something I really want to do once I go back to my home country. (I'm living abroad now so I'll have to wait.) I have a fascination for neckwear of all sorts from costume jewelry style necklaces to neckties, which is something I've added to my fursona. So I definitely want to get a collar. I'm not sure if I'd be brave enough to wear it in public as the one I want to get is rather colorful and will more than likely attract quite a bit of attention, but who knows?

I'd also like to make ears and a tail based off my fursona to wear around my house. I don't want to just be that furry who just simply draws and writes about furries, but rather, I'd like to adopt some of the lifestyle too.

Honestly, I think I enjoy the varied looks I get from other people when I wear a collar. It's interesting how one person can completely ignore the fact that I'm wearing an article of clothing made for canines, another complements the fashion statement, and yet another thinks I'm into bondage.  :P

Also, I think the collar looks good with my dogtag necklace and leather coat.  :)

I have an ear-hat and collar I wear pretty much on an everyday basis. I wear them because it's fun. The hat is quite a silly one and I think it's good to incorporate a bit of silly into your day. I also found that the collar is just a really comfortable thing to wear. I'd probably wear it if I wasn't a fur. I also wear these in hopes that some other furs in the area I don't know about may see it and come say hi.

Well, I may not wear a collar, tail or ears (yet) but I do wear bandannas around my neck as well as having a dog tag with "Star Collie" engraved in it on a chain.. For me, it's because it's a part of my fursona and a part of me. I even tried not wearing a bandanna and the dog tag once and I didn't feel like myself. I guess for most furries, it's how they can feel like their fursonas or to simply be themselves. :)

I do it because I feel really incomplete and strange if I don't.
Public reaction, well...enh as much as I do love getting people's attention and provoking them to come up and ask questions its not why I do what I do. I often get the phantom limb sensation so having my tail and ears on helps with that and I feel a little more complete.

A collar for me is because I am a submissive, so now that I'm currently not with someone I'm going to stay uncollared.

Also---what better what to get scritches and cuddles then when you're floofy and adorable? ^_^

The only time I wore my tail was during a fan  convention or meet. I would wear it the entire day in public, I also spot a Hello Kitty Pack pack.
I seriously thinking of wearing it more often on Saturdays like going to a farmers market.
Furry is more than a hobby to me. It it indeed a lifestyle and important part who I am.

We kinds of girls do exist! My boyfriend enjoys crossdressing for me and I do enjoy picking out clothes for him. :)

I wear my collar + dogtag for a few reasons.  It reminds me of my mate who gave it to me, reminds me to be myself and gives me a strange sense of comfort. 

I wear it almost everywhere with the exception of around family most of the time.  I've actually gotten only positive reactions and have had some nice conversations started over it.

I sometimes take the collar of my Dog and wear it  :-[ Despite it being dirty and smelly. Why do I do this...........I don't know, I do get a satisfaction from wearing it, I guess I would just love for someone to walk me  (:. I also would like to get a tail and ears at some point.

I use to have a dog that got token way. I got to keep her collar at least. I started wearing it because I had no reason to just leave it hanging there. But then I thought I couldent wear it because I was a Rat and not a K-9. I read a little about who and who couldnt wear one. And thats when I found out anyone can wear a collar. *Chews a little more to get back on topic* Any ways,I dont like to take it off because I feel incomplet if I dont wear it. Ive never took it off since.  :D   I also want to get a tail,not ears because they look kinda dumn   :P

After I finished the tail for my fursuit, I put it on, and then I got so used to it, I was scared to take it off because it might hurt xDDD jkjk
The reason why I wear my tail, other than because I'm a furry, is because I feel somewhat broken without it, that, and I also like disturbing the general public by evidently not fitting in on purpose xD

ever since i found out i was furry, i've always worn a tail, i kinda miss it when not wearing it.

when i get home from work, the first thing i do is put my tail on and dont take it off till i go to work the next day (repeat till the weekend).
