Title: Walmart selling furstuit heads????
Post by: cause the rat on August 24, 2017, 12:07:00 pm
Seen this online first. Then happened to be walking threw our wally and seen them in person.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sloth-Maskimal-Adorable-Large-Plush-Head-Mask-Accessory/630878243 (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sloth-Maskimal-Adorable-Large-Plush-Head-Mask-Accessory/630878243)

Now i've heard both pros and cons about them. Even some furry Youtubers telling people not to buy them. Others saying it could be your first fursuit just for fun. My thoughts? They are very hard to breath in. Very cheaply made. But if you wanna rock one at a furcon or meet go for it. For $20+ you could have fun with it. They also have jumpsuit like house coat/PJs made up to look like animals this year as well. These could also be a blast to wear at a con or meet. I don't have a link for them. Finding anything at walmartdotcom is a joke.

I've never put one of these on. But did take a look inside. The head is like any other mascot head. Round and one size fits all. The eyes and neck are the only openings. There is no air flow for the mouth. Personally I don't plan on buying one of the heads. But almost came home with one of the house coat/PJ things. They're awesome.

I have to go exchange some shoes I bought last night. More than likely come home with

I saw that! Maybe it will get more people interested in furry through these.

Isn't this still technically furry chat?

Still, I wonder if this is a sign we're becoming more accepted.

Moved here because it probably fit better :)

Well. Looks like I fell asleep at the wheel. My post kinda went off into nothing.  :D  What i was going to say was I will probably come home with one of the house coat/PJs. But after looking at them again I didn't.

BennyJackdaw, that would be nice. But I think it's more along these lines. Most of the people I talk to about the fandom have no clue we exist. So I'm guessing this is more of a Halloween thing. But it would be nice to think our fandom is becoming more main stream.

Varg, I'd be disappointed if I didn't see a few of these bobbing around the next furcon I go to.

IMO, looks cheap and probably won't last a year, much less two.  :P  It's fine for Halloween, but I wouldn't be caught dead wearing one to a furcon.
Save your pennies, folks. If you want a real good quality fursuit head, get one from a REAL fursuit maker in the furry fandom. Not one of these cheap pieces of crap from a retail seller.  >:(

Not everyone wants an expensive suit, much less can afford one. The Walmart ones could be a good, fun starting place, especially for younger people who would just outgrow an expensive suit. Or those who want a more toony suit on a budget, or something that they don't have to be paranoid about getting dirty or damaged.

It's all a matter of taste. Not everyone likes the way the higher end fursuits look, just as not everyone likes the way the cheap ones look. Spend your money on what you want.

Not my cup of tea personally--I would rather save up for a suit from a pro maker--but to each their own. I agree with Loc, if someone wants to start out with little money they could get a fursona head of some kind.

That's a bit elitist isn't it? I think the fact that fursuits, which have had such a huge stigma for 15 years now (since CSI, let's say) now are being sold at walmart. That's progress. Odd, but good.

Might be fun to doctor one up. Go from cheap and kinda creepy to nightmare fuel in ten stitches or less.  :D These cheesy round hollow things are nothing like the real thing. They are actually selling. Know of a few stores that are out of one or two of the choices.

I saw those today. I said...

"That's weird..."

I didn't get the impression they were for marketed for the furries, but for mainstream people who just want to have fun pretending to be animals.

Sounds like they would be good for costume parties, and Halloween.
Especially for kids if they have small sizes.

Might even give a boost to general acceptance of the fandom.

While looking at these maskamals I found a werewolf mask. Hopefully I'll have a scary werewolf costume!

I saw the heads in WM a few days ago. Definately ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL.  >:(  A person would need to put extra padding in the head to make it more comfortable and/or to fit properly otherwise the costume head will be very loose. They also look way overly big for kids to try wearing.

Seems more like this is a Halloween related thing than a Furry thing. Though when I saw them last time I was at Walmart looking for those new Fingerlings animatronic monkeys for my robot critter collection I was tempted to look for a dog or wolf one even though I never had much interest in fursuiting.

I actually saw these and got one on Saturday.

am hoping I can use it as a base and so I can figure out how it's constructed for making a better version :)

for $20 I figured it was inexpensive enough I could do anything with it (even if its just taking it appart)

I can provide pictures if anyone would like.

Saw the gaylord/cardboard bin of these over-the-head masks at several area Walmarts. The unicorns went first, you cannot find them anymore. Although I saw one in the customer service area today while in the return lane. No canine types, which is disappointing. My sampling turned up bear, panda, cat, panther, shark, tiger, raccoon, and bunny.

I have seen children, teens, and adults wearing these around various stores. So I you buy one, it is recommended that it be sprayed out with a good disinfectant before you wear it. If I had to choose one now, the tiger would get my $20. IMHO it has nice color and the eyes are rather pretty.
As stated elsewhere in this thread, some of these maskimals could be combined with a pajama suit from the same store to make up a complete costume. Not a professional grade fursuit perhaps, but a start for a budding fursuiter.

Went in a store after work today and found two new characters added to the pile--T-Rex and Monkey. The wearer of the T-Rex peers out of dark mesh in the open mouth. Still no canine characters.

I've seen them pop up in some furcon videos. Awesome. It's great to know there are fellow furs with a good sense of humor.

These could double as cat beds. It's bound to happen. When these end up on clearance for five bucks, then maybe my cat will get one for a hideout.

You and I think alike Rocket. Just have to wait and see what's left in the box after Halloween.

Checked for clearance stuff after Halloween at several area Walmarts. The Maskimals were still full price. In one store, all that remained were rabbit and raccoon masks.

There is a wide selection at my local store, but as you experienced all at full price.

While recently cruising the area Walmarts, I could no longer find any Maskimals, even in the clearance aisles. There was a thought that holiday theme masks might be offered. Perhaps next Summer the silly masks will return, and with new characters.

The Maskimals were back at Walmart late this Winter and quickly sold out. No tiger masks with this lot. Still no canines. Now one can find wookies in a bin to themselves. Another bin had Jurassic Park-themed T-Rex masks.

Walmart was selling these dino masks with hinged jaws. I bought a couple because my head is small enough for them.

check them out in this video.

And now I'm trying to modify them to be a little more interesting. It's kind of hush hush atm.

Had a brief discussion on Maskimals at a recent furmeet. It was discovered that most of the masks in the bin at one local Walmart had been worn by someone. Inside could be found traces of makeup. Was in a Super Walmart last week and saw a shopper wearing a Rugrats-themed Maskimal. They're getting fancier and the price is up to $24.95 now. New additions include Minions, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Scooby Doo.

Recently discovered that one store has these on clearance for just under $20. HA! Most of them were $19.99 before copyrighted cartoon characters were added. We noted a tiger Maskimal in the bins. A brown pony type was added to the line and it is MLP-style. Still no generic canine types though.

Every time I walk by the bin, I am SO about to yank out the kitty cat one, go over to the changing rooms where the kigurumis are, match a cat one with the mask , change into it all, and start going bonkers around the store while shopping....

Was thinking of going over to the stereo section, cranking up some hip-hop or connecting Bluetooth and blasting some EDM, while freaking out as a sheep...and bleating at every bass drop.

If it weren't for the fact society may judge me a little harshly for age, I would have done just that.
Heck, maybe I will anyway!  (got to get something)

Also,
Once there was a young teen toying around with some, I could see the thoughts going through their head, "shall I or shan't I?", "gadzooks what would people think?"  "The desire is burning inside me to , but.." (yeah, I suppose the teen was thinking in that way, NOT!)

I was finding myself about to say "Hey, you kid there!  Yeah the one with the crazy mask on. No not you, the one looking like a bangal tiger!.  Yeah you!  There are these cool people called furies who can tell you how to make a real knock out maskimal called a fursuit!" "Just need some thread, foam, hot glue, ..."

But, I just smiled a knowing smile, and walked away to get some motor oil. I thought that it was a little more subtle, and probably was less problematic for all of us.

 :goldhowl:

Maskimals, the gateway-drug to Furry.

 :) (:

I need sooo much watching these days.
(Who's on deck these days?)

We have also seen similar behaviors regarding the product in our neck of the woods. We have also pondered the possibility of selecting one of the Maskimals for temporary use as a grocery basket.

In my local store, I think I saw one that was supposed to be a grey fox or a husky.

One of the stores here had them marked down to $15. There was Lamb, Goat, Pony, Pug, Eagle and Wolf Maskimals added to the mix. Almost sprang for one. Wolf/Husky had cat-like eyes though.

There was also a fox over-the-head mask with moving jaw for about the same price in another aisle. The wearer could see through the tear ducts. About the same quality as the $60 models sold through the seasonal Halloween stores IMHO.

Rocket,
Yes, I noticed the eyes had the wrong pupil for that one mask. But it still had a useful effect.  Unless you are like us, and know what it should be like...

--Maskimal Case File #6 - 7/8

Last night, I was back at the store getting supplies (*sigh* again), and there was a young boy in front of me  in the checkout line.  He had the unicorn maskimal.  His mom was not at all okay with it.  She kept talking about how he will be made fun of, that unicorns and such were feminine etc, that people will call him gay...

I normally stay very clear of peoples business.  But something in me made me speak out.  I said that Unicorns , being mythical creatures, are purely a product of the imagination, and that gender didn't have to factor in.  I said that they were basically genderless creatures (not sure if I was making that up).  I then found myself telling the child that he can make a back-story about his character, and act it out, when appropriate so to do.

In the end of the conversation with him and his mom, we were talking about using Faux Fur from Joanns Fabrics and how to make a DTD, that he would need at least horse hooves in place of hands, and a tail.  That way he could get the "rest" of the costume made on short notice.  I realize now, that they really don't have enough time to get it done before Halloween.

It made the boy happy to realize that others were supportive of his desire to be himself.  He just wanted to have fun.  And who knows, in a few years, the maskimal, and whatever else, maybe set aside anyway.  After that discussion, he could be heard jumping up and shouting, "1-2-3, Unicorn Power!"    :D

I remember a time for myself, I wanted to be a Fox or a Wolf.  Like a REAL one. I often would howl like a wolf when I wanted to.  It made me happy, more than people realize.

I am glad times have changed enough that some kids can do just that. :)

But in a sort of greedy way, I also want Furry to remain a sub-culture, because it is special to me, and I don't know what might happen to it if it was truly mainstream everywhere.  So I am almost afraid of Maskimals and other things ?marginalizing? Furry.

I guess if the wearer of a maskimal is a furry at heart, then the conflict in my mind is resolved.

The Maskimals went on clearance immediately after Halloween. Initially marked down to $7.50, now under $5. Learned that Walgreens had similar masks. Maybe my cat can use the lamb as a hideout.

after a quick call to my 2 local walmarts they were out of stock.

However I did find them on Amazon for $12.90

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076QJB4JZ/ref=twister_B07CB7XK45?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Just ordered one, to see if I can do anything with it! :)

After searching a little more, the walmart site also has wolf maskimals for $6.25

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Maskimals-Oversized-Plush-Halloween-Mask-Wolf/123629618

~Edit~

It arrived and its, surprisingly descent for the price,  I need to adjust the whole thing to work with my glasses (I may dis assemble an old pair and mount lenses permanently as part of the head),

It's comfy, and the jaw works well....

Will need to start planning how to go about adjusting it to the rest of my needs,  now I need to figure out if I need to buy 1 or 2 more for spares hehe

if anyone wants specific pics or info let me know!

Thought the cat might like one as a nap nook, but not so much.

It's a shock they haven't produced any holiday themed Maskimals.

Have yet to see any new products of this line. Perhaps as Summer winds down.
