An introduction to the fandom, and a big misunderstanding
« on: August 22, 2010, 10:14:27 am »
I know what you're probably thinking from the title. Trust me, this is funny. My friend Erin likes Pokemon a lot, and seems very into the idea of a Pokemon -coughfursuitcough- costume. So I decided to tell her about the fandom.
Me: You know, I think you might be a furry.
Her: What?! No!
Me: You can't believe everything you see on TV, we---
Her: I don't even need to shave yet, and here you are telling me it's like I have FUR?
Me: ... Okay, that's another way to think of it...

Told you it was funny. :D

That's a pretty funny reaction, haha.  I'd have to say that a Pokémon costume isn't exactly a fursuit though.. it's just cosplay.  I'm a Pokémon fan and I'm here. I don't really consider myself a regular furry these days. Pokémon costumes can be worn at anime conventions and things as the characters they are designed after. Sure you can wear them at a furry convention too since costuming is encouraged and it can be considered furry related but they Pokémon characters themselves are not furries. E.g. my Buizel character is NOT a furry even remotely, imo. Now what are furry characters are my two fursuits I made. A good example of what I am talking about though as far as fitting in but not being considered as such is when I wore my coyote costume to a huge Renn Fair in a neighboring state. Sure, I was surrounded by other costumes and such but it didn't make what I had on a Renn Fair costume, I was just a furry character amid the rest - and believe me I stuck out, but in a good way and was treated wonderfully all day.

I don't think your friend is a furry. Even farther from it than me I would think.

If you wanted her to check out furry fandom though.. there are a lot of us Pokémon nuts around that hang out around furry stuff lke FA, SF, etc. because its the best place to show off our art and stories since there is an overlap of interest in it often (many furries love Pokémon too). She might find FA to be a blast due to the mass amount of Pokémon stuff there. Just a thought. ;)

She's 12. Don't you have to be 18?

FA currently is not accepting any new registration.  I'm not sure if there's an age limit... I think when registration is open, you can register if you're younger.  However, you would have to put your age to make sure legality issues are being followed.  The site is very good at filtering out mature content.

Anyway, it's definitely a place she could check out.  She doesn't even need an account right now to look through the things created with a general audience in mind, so I'm sure she could find plenty of Pokemon art there. :)
Allasso, Volume 2: Saudade is now out!  Feel free to check it out ^_^

Oh really? I wanted to sign up myself, but I heard somewhere that it had adult content so I just assumed that meant no.

You've never been to FA? You don't have to register at FA to view non-adult artwork..  Sure, I draw adult artwork myself, but without being 18, or with the filter turned off, or without signing up you wont see any of it. FA isn't just for 18+.

I just thought you were talking about signing up. I do go there sometimes, but since registrations are closed at the moment I can't check the age limit if there is one.

I should have used a period after the first two items I listed and started a new sentence with the not signing up part. xx;  But yeah, with the viewing of adult stuff turned off it can be completely avoided (unless its not rated correctly or is suggestive).

Oh, I did. Apparently a certain group of certain people were spamming pictures of real children graphically being shot in the head or something :/

Anyways, um, yeah, FA's forums tend to be rather troll-infested themselves (as in, a good percent are trolls, and most of the other people were drama queens. I made... 10 posts there? and then I was like... :P screw that. Maybe things have changed in a year but... Dunno, havn't bothered to check. Not that I really cared...)

If she's 12, she may still not be able to sign up "without parental permission". Most web forums, even for younger crowds require you to be 13 to sign up on your own. I don't know the exact rulling language, but it has to do with federal laws restricting people under 13 from signing up for things. But like others have said, you can go visit FA and view the non-adult stuff with no problem without registering.

I was actually surprised when Moshi monsters let me in with no questions, but then again there's quite a few 5 year olds playing there.

As far as FA is concerned in regards to any troll or drama issues there, I think it's best not to discuss such issues. Let's not "bash" their forums/site, ok? The last thing we'd want to hear is them bashing Furtopia back.

As far as age and registrations goes, Most forums, if not all, may have to follow COPPA laws and standards.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children%27s_Online_Privacy_Protection_Act
So any child 13 or under may have to have parental consent before registering at a forum someplace.

Well, Moshi monsters HAS a forum that users under 13 can use, but the website in itself is not intended solely for chatting.

COPPA is US legislation, so it shouldn't affect it if Moshi is hosted on servers outside the 'states.

Since we have children aboard all I can say is I had a similar thought that furry as people attracted to hairy people.

PS.  Spirit, wait until your 18 before singing up for a FA account,  is not kid friendly.

The internet itself in general isn't "kid friendly" so point is kinda moot. xP Seriously though..this thread has gotten completely off topic! Spirit's friend misunderstood "furry" to mean some sort of hairy insult. It was funny and we had a laugh. Can we, you know, go back to that? :o
