Here Ye, Hear Ye, Hear Ye

Groundhog Day, February 2, 2011
Punxsutawney Phil was raised from his burrow
By the call of President Bill Deeley.
He greeted his handlers, Ben Hughes and John Griffiths.

After casting an inquisitive eye towards thousands of his faithful followers,
He proclaimed that the Steelers are going to the Super Bowl!

Back to the business at hand...
He surveyed his surroundings carefully and found that there was no shadow around,
So, an early spring it will be.

There you have it folks, I didn't think it was possible seeing that as I type this, I look out my window and see an average of 18" of snow and drifts of up to 5 feet high. But Punxsutawney Phil is the most trusted weather man furry I know so I won't doubt him. Yay spring!

No snow here yet but it is in the 20's so I'm not so sure Pux know's what he's doing senile maybe?

When a grondhog sees my shadow, he takes a dirt nap. No really, I used to be overrun with them. They like to dig against foundations, into ditch banks and under road beds. They love to eat soybeans and they look like rotted stumps when they stand up. They get so chubby that their little arms just hang out. The rodents will climb trees, but usually not past the first notch. The big ones get surly and will run you off. The state department of agriculture agent here, told me to be careful with the groundhogs as they can carry encephalitis and rabies. 
Once saw a groundhog stumbling about one February. It had a mouthful of leaves. They normally hibernate.

Abandonned groundhog burrows become homes for other animals (with modification) like rabbits, fox, and coyote.

The only groundhogs I care about are the chocolate variety. Who cares what the weather is like when  you have treats (:
