Stop eating meat! It gives you cancer.

*sigh*  Is there anything on this planet that DOESN'T give you cancer? At the rate society is going, we'll end up just like the fictional society in the movie Demolition Man: No meat, sugar, salt, and just about everything else that's bad for you.  :P

You can have my bacon, ham, sausages, and other meats when you pry them from my cold dead paws.  :goldbloody:

It states that -processed- meats are bad for you. Which shouldn't really come as any surprise XD

Let's be honest, when has something being bad for people ever stopped them from doing it? :P

*sigh*  Is there anything on this planet that DOESN'T give you cancer?

There is.  Cell phones don't give you cancer (see the bottom of the diagram with blue boxes).

Having said that, bananas are dangerous.  If you eat 160,000,000 of them in one sitting, you'll receive a dose of radiation that's fatal, even with treatment. </joke>

After doing a bit more digging, it seems that the WHO is attributing processed meats with a percentage increase to the risk... of a somewhat unlikely form of cancer.

Quote from: http://money.cnn.com/2015/10/26/news/red-meat-processed-cancer-world-health-organization/index.html
The WHO's cancer research unit now classifies processed meat as "carcinogenic to humans" based on evidence from hundreds of studies, and linked it specifically to colon, or colorectal, cancer.

The report outlined that simply eating 50 grams of processed meat each day -- the equivalent of two slices of ham -- can increase the risk of such cancer by 18%. However, the authors say the risks are relatively small to begin with.

[. . .]

The WHO now classifies processed meat in the same category as smoking and asbestos, based on its certainty of a link with cancer, but stressed that did not mean they were equally dangerous.

[. . .]

According to estimates cited by the WHO, about 34,000 cancer deaths per year worldwide can be attributed to diets that are high in processed meat. That's a small fraction of the 8.2 million deaths caused by cancer in 2012, according to the latest WHO data.

In short, a double digit percentage increase to a tiny risk is still tiny.

Not sure I could give up meat simply because a foundation found that processed meat might cause cancer. A lot of things I do might harm me, but they don't. This isn't any different :D

Well as being a meat hunter all I can say is, unprocessed meat with nothing added is the best. Plus most healthiest, but there is a lot of things that do and don't cause cancer :/.

It's probably not the meat itself that may or may not give you cancer, but rather the chemicals such as additives and preservatives that might. Ever look on the back lable and read the list of ingrediants? There's stuff there that I sure as hell don't know what it is or what it does.  :o

Sunlight gives you cancer. But you'll get cancer if you always stay out of the sunlight. So I'll eat my meat in the bright noon day sun and be a happy man.

Sounds like a scare tactic by militant vegetarians. Too bad for them I have a death wish so telling me something may eventually kill me does not work as the deterrent that it does on the average person. Meat is delicious and I will keep eating it.
Meddle not in the affairs of robot dogs for you are crunchy and make an excellent fuel source.

There was a 9gag post that put things into perspective along with a laugh.

It said something to the lines of, "If I ate enough bacon to give me cancer, I'd die from something not cancer related."

Red meat generally from beef and pork used to be more lean, but
since the mid 1900's those who raised such animals for slaughter
fed them corn and now antibiotics to make them fatter. Of course
the extra fat give them a better flavor. But eating a lot of fat is bad
for humans. Not so much if you work hard or live in a cold climate.
Which most of us don't. And when I say work hard, I mean burning
five thousand calories or more a day.

It wasn't unusual for people to eat 10 pounds of food a day when they
were working hard in pioneer days. They worked hard and died young.
Probably so young that cancer didn't have a chance to kill very many.

When I do eat meat it's usually turkey or chicken. Not so much red meat.
I had bowel surgery two years ago, and at that time no sign of cancer.

That's always good news. Hopefully you won't have to worry about things like that.

Cancer is a scary thing indeed and it is good to take in the precautions to live cancer free. That said however, there are things that are brought up that gets blown out of proportion. Say the team that did learn that red meats increases a person's risk, what is not mentioned most of the time is how much of an increase. The numbers could be large or they could be minuscule.

It's like with the recession, we drop into the red by 15% one year and the next year it goes down further by 10%, suddenly the media is saying the recession has ended or is ending and that "the nation's debt is fixed!"
Celebrate who you are.

Several years ago a friend of mine developed high blood pressure. He read that cutting red meat from ones diet would
help lower blood pressure. So he tried it, and it did lower it. I don't remember by how much, but enough he pretty
much quit red meat all together.. Unfortunately he died a dozen years ago at age 61 from an unrealated problem.

Sometimes even though a person tries to take better care of ones self it may not help us live longer. But it does
increase our chances to live longer and at least healthier.

This is why I enjoy free-range venison...when I can get it.

Ah, always a sensible voice to these discussions!

I like to point out that even when unprocessed, the meats from our livestock little resemble what our ancestors were used to consuming, which would have been relatively lean in most circumstances. Furthermore, meat would have been a merely supplementary source of food in many ethnic groups, with heavier consumption in the winter when less vegetation was available. I've got a pet theory that increased meat consumption along with reduced light exposure during the wintertime trigger a pseudo-hibernating metabolic state that encourages fat retention, but as far as I know nothing of the sort has been proven yet. Guess that makes me a crank, then. Nevertheless, if you want to accept that theory: Don't treat meat like a staple food in combination with a sedentary lifestyle.

Grass-fed, organic beef is closer to what our physiology is adapted to. And of course, poultry is much leaner, most of the time. Fish is quickly becoming a radioactive, heavy metal -laden luxury due to pollution and unsustainable practices, but everything I've read suggest fish itself has a very healthy nutritional profile. And it's delicious. :D

At least in California, it seems that everything does cause cancer.

...that's what the labels tell me.

I guess this whole thing is just another reason as to why we need to stop altering the crud out of our food. Nothing's wrong with hunting a wild deer and cooking and eating its meat. Just make sure that said deer said deer is not walking on its hind legs or displaying an other signs of anthropomorphism.
We kind of like those guys.

I find it interesting that all these animal-loving furries are so okay with eating animals!  After all, prey is just there to be consumed, am i right?

That aside, i am rarely one to turn down a good steak.  Medium-rare, please.

You are right. But what predator, especially a dragon, denies the chance to play a bit with its food before eating it?

...and yeah: steak and bacon. Before them, all arguments for going vegetarian are useless.

Just letting you guys know that the 18% increase chance of getting cancer is legit. Good thing is, its only 18% of whatever is there, so if there was a 1% chance youd get cancer from [insert action here], and eat processed meats after that, it'd be 1.18% chance instead, so its conpletely fine.
