I was in kindergarten during his spaceshot. Someone in another class made a clay model of his rocket and the teacher showed us.

Life magazine published a story on the Friendship 7 mission. Photos showed Glenn relaxing on the Navy destroyer with a bandaged hand. A typical injury resulting from blowing the hatch. Gus Grissom suffered no such injury btw.

Later, in 1984 when he was running for his party's nomination to run for President, Jesse Jackson kept calling him Mr. Right Stuff during one of the debates.

Glenn's passing kinda reminded me about something. I don't have the movies Apollo 13, The Right Stuff, and Space Cowboys in my movie collection.  :-[ I'll need to rectify this situation this holiday season.  :D

Yes John Glenn was a hero to many after making his orbits of our
planet.  I remember watching the whole thing on TV. The news
covered the entire flight of the mercury spacecraft and it's precious
cargo.

Nasa told Glenn to not eject the retro rocket pack as there
was an indication the heat shield was loose. So he saw the
pack burn away as he rentered the atmosphere. That had to be
nerve wracking to not know if the shield would stay afterwards.

Glenn of course was a test pilot and a veteran fighter pilot. So it's
likely he kept a cool eye on his instruments, doing what he could,
and not worry about something he couldn't control.

There have been many national heros, but I am sure Glenn was
proud to just serve his country.


In those days our government didn't hide our attempts to reach space as
Soviet Russia did. So the world saw our failures and successes. We should
remember keeping government open to responsible news reporting is
good for our country and us all..
