The 70's wer funny times, especially the cartoonish movies, complete crap but the style was funny  '<img'>

Are you referring to Zazu?
He's not a blue jay, he's a hornbill... albeit a rather highly stylised hornbill. They're a legitimate African species of bird.

So Disney ripped off Kimba the White Lion to make the Lion King movie. There's a lot of that going on, and it's been going on for quite some time now. West Side Story was an obvious rip off of Romeo and Juliette, which, in turn, Shakespeare ripped off from an older story. Flipper was plagarized from Oppian's Halleutica, which was "borrowed" from Pausanias.

Nothing unusual about that. As concerns Lion King, that's not important. What I want to know is this: what the heck was a blue jay doing in Africa?

I agree,
Disney do tend to copy / remake old stories.. but they nearly always do a good job of it.
And Lion king is still a great movie.

Kimba is good too.. I have it on VHS tape :P

If you boil things right down, there's hardly ever a single original idea these days, as it is. ':p'
 
Oh, and a little tidbit that I share with drooling, rabid anime fanboys...
In the Swahili language, which is fairly commonly used in Africa.... simba = lion... whereas kimba = dung heap.
Then I knowlingly glare at them.
That usually shuts them up. '<img'>

I have an old children's book, "Simba of the White Mane" that was published in the 50s. I found it in the attic a short few years after the Lion King was in theaters. I skimmed through it, and found the book featured some similarities to the Disney film as well, albeit a totally different story because it had people in it if I recall.

Wow.  This debate never ends.  ':shock:'

Won't take tons of time, but will mention...
1) Tezuka used Disney's BAMBI as the basis for his "Jungle Emperor" manga which became the Kimba animated series.
2) Tezuka's character was named Leo.  The US changed the name thinking Leo was too common for a lion's name.
3) The original Kimba is now on DVD from Rhino.  It is the US version which is pretty close, just a bit "cleaner" (ie less death) than the original Japanese.
4) Despite Disney's claim, a number of folks who worked on the film remembered Kimba.  No doubt some memories ended up in the film.
5) LION KING began as an animal version of Hamlet... and the final story is still true to that lineage.
6) Tezuka did a second series with an adult Leo which showed up on Christian channels beginning in the 1980s.  Features a very "fem" voice for the King of Beasts.
7) Simba was a grapefruit soft drink in the 1960s! '<img'>

Kimba The While Lion? From what I know, yes, it is a lot like The Lion King. In Japan (where it came from, of course), Kimba was even called Simba.

Less remake, more ripoff, to be honest. ^_^ But, yes, most everyone agrees that that's where Disney got the story from, and I don't doubt it for a second.

Kitsune's right...a lot of Disney stories were borrowed rather freely from old folk tales, etc...Pinocchio, for example, came from a Carlo Colladi story published in 1881!  Lion King also has elements of Hamlet.  Disney wasn't always original...far from it, at times...he was a popularizer, and did that as well as or better than anyone.  For many, they'd have no exposure to these classic stories if not for Disney and those like him...writers often put old wine into new bottles.

What's so great about Pinocchio, anyhow?  I dance without strings!   '<img'>

Wow, I never knew that other one existed. Now I really wanna see it. I wonder wich one I would like better....
Any way, I've been told that disney tried the same thing with Pocahontis, not sure on how true that statement was though.

... And the second Lion King movie borrowed freely from Romeo and Juliet. At least they kept a little theme there!

I've known about Kimba for awhile... vaguely as a child, and did some online research. And I have a stuffed Kimba... he's just cute...

There were also rumors of Simba originally going to be white, some of the old concept art as Simba as a child with friends similar to Kimba's (though one looked to be a fox).

Until I find subtitled Kimba though... I am very fearful of US plot magulations...

But, they're both good, even if one is a definite derived copycat, at least it's a good one!

Yes, Disney did a far better animation job. But, look at the budget difference! o.o ^_^ I think if the Japanese studio had had more money, they could've done a bit nicer than what they did.

Also, the version that was on TV about 10 years ago is said to be different from the 'real' version of Kimba (also, I believe that there is a black and white and a colored version of it). I think that they played it as a movie on TV, and thus chopped out some parts to make up for time.

I've seen the VHS tape in the store from time to time, I often wondered if it was anything like the lion king.  If it was ripped off, I wouldn't be surprised.  You'd be surprised at how many things in cartoons are ripped off of other things.

Copied or not. The Lion King is still one of my favorite movies. I'm an animation student and I love the way it was animated. But lots of Disney movies are taken from stuff so, I'd believe it.

some of the scenes pictured were almost the exact same, it's too uncanny to be a coincidence.....Rip-off....but The Lion King is still an excellent movie...

thanks Ill certainly have a looks.. I Remember a show years ago about a white lione but Im not sure it was the same one.. time would have been about 1982.
