Title: US Supreme Court overturns Roe vs. Wade.
Post by: Kobuk on June 24, 2022, 02:01:35 pm
Read it and weep, folks. The US Supreme Court just officially overturned Roe vs. Wade today.
Women in many states and/or the US in general, will no longer have the right to an abortion.

Anybody have thoughts on this major court decision?

Regardless of whether you liked the result or not, Roe v. Wade was a hideous decision that should have never happened in the first place. The reasoning defied all logic, and the terminology was just plain weird with its "emanitions" and "penumbras" (what were they discussing? Constitutional law or solar eclipses?   (: ) I'm surprised it took this long.

The SCOTUS returned the issue to the states to decide. Some states will opt to prohibit, while others do not. That was how the issue was shaping up before Roe happened. If you don't like how your state decides, you can vote with your feet. That's the genius of a federal republic with semi-autonomous states.

Another case of be careful for what you wish: you just might get it. The first time a frightened 14 y/o girl shows up dead of a botched abortion,we all know what happens next: it will be on a 24/7 news cycle. Any pro-life candidate will find himself hard pressed to win election as a county dog catcher. They'll be wishing the SCOTUS left well enough alone.

This will also become a full time employment situation for lawyers once the litigation ramps up.

Being an aussie, I missed a lot of the drama that was happening in the US. From the comments above, it sounds like it was a battle between making abortion legal or illegal.

Personally, I don't think abortion is right.
A lot of people will say things like...but what if she was raped? Well, I don't believe rape is right either.
I also know of children who are born as a product of rape who have been good people who have accomplished a lot in life.

I believe it is the job of the community and of the government to give pregnant women the care and support required to turn a potentially awful conception into a gift for the next generation.

If you have personally been the victim of rape, if you have had an unplanned pregnancy, if you have an abortion: My heart breaks for you. I hope you are doing okay. I hope people around you are giving you the love and care that you need.
I hope that if you are forced to give birth, that it is as painless as possible, and that you fall in love with your child, and that they make your life a billion times happier.

I think this is a heinously stupid decision that will harm far more people than it will help. There are already shortages in our foster care/adoption systems; this will serve to increase the strain on them, possibly to the breaking point. Unwanted children and parents who can't afford them are much more susceptible to turning to lives of crime to get by. This (combined with attempts currently being pursued by groups who want to ban birth control) will increase that problem tenfold.

Be careful what you wish for.
