I just found out I'm pregnant, it's going to be my first...was wondering if there were any furry parents on here with good websites....I know there's not any books yet...Or maybe just share experiences? Tips?

I think there's a Yahoo! group for furry parents, but I'm not sure. Will have to try and hunt that one down, if it's still around.

I've had a lot of baby care experience (raising my two younder siblings and Kada has a son). Your welcome to ask us for any questions ya like. A new parent is being happy and scared (will I be a good parent, etc, etc) all at once.

Ayame is a new mom. She may have some tips for ya too.

(giggles) I have a son, daughter-in-law, 2 grandsons and 1 granddaughter.

Best advice? Love them like you mean it! Don't ever beat them or put them down or tell them they are no good etc. No negativity. Be firm and follow through. Of course, yours isn't even here yet so the last one will come later. Like in the terrible 2's!

Stand by what ever they want to be, no matter whether that be in a career or sexuality. Love them always and always praise them when they have done well. Encourage them when they feel less than every one else or they don't feel like they can 'do it'. Help them achieve their goals.

And most of all? LOVE THEM!

(giggles) Just my 2 cents worth.

Something on a more serious line: I once asked my son after he had his first child, a boy, if he ever felt I was a strict mother. (I was a very strict mom.) He thought about that question, then looked me straight in the eyes and said, "Yes." he paused for a few seconds then continued, "But I am glad you were."

That makes it all worth the headache of raising a child, in my opinion.

Firstly, congratulations.

I am not a parent myself, but what I feel is that if I do become one in the future, I will look back to my own childhood to help me. The parts I didn't like, I'll think why, and try to make that avoidable for my own child. I'll think back to how my parents were with me, and the things they did that I didn't like and I'll make sure I don't do the same to my child.

secondly.... I don't have my own kids, but one thing I have learned from babysitting and helping out my mother (she's a kindergarten teacher) is that when they're little, they're pretty much guaranteed to have lots of energy. You have to stay on your toes to keep up with them.

Congratulations, Kat. Â Enjoy your cubs. Â They not only change your life, but I believe they enhance it. Â I have two nephews, and my human sister hated children. Â But you wouldn't know that now. She loves those boys, and she's an awesome mom.

I can't wait to be mated and have a brood of my own.

Congrats Fianna I hope everything turns out ok for you. As for myself it's still a little early for me, but maybe someday. I'm a soon to be uncle though as my brothers girlfriend is expecting a bundle of joy within the next couple of months.

Im afraid I can't help with anything , as for advise Im probably the last person on earth you wanna be asking. But do encourage him/her too read n read allot as early on as possible. TV's ok but a good book encourages a good imagination always useful. Hope all goes well for you. Â

I've got three nephews and three nieces distributed amongst my three older brothers and their respective wives. The oldest niece is my god-daughter, but I've not seen her in years since that part of the family lives out in British Columbia.

Babies are great!

First of all, remember that everyone's experience is completely unique. No pregnancy or birth is the same, ever.

Second of all, no matter what you might ever think, you will be able to do everything you need to. I was very scared when I went to deliver my baby, (2 months ago) but it turned out that I was in labor only 12 hours or so with no drugs and it was very painful, but I, and my husband did it! You'll feel so good when your baby is born, you'll be so proud of yourself. Focus on that and not the pain, but believe me, you can handle the pain. I did, and I'm a pussy!

Hmmm....I think that maybe I should have taken lamaze. I didn't, but I think it would have helped.

i thought the furry phenom was restricted to Gen x, Why, and scattered younger baby boomers... ':.'

i mean it, bad enough for me to suddenly end up a great uncle, a nephew OLDER than I am, and an uncle YOUNGER...

If you are talking about me, Sniffswind, yes, I am a grandma. Ny grandkids are 8, 6 and 4, this year.

Though, my family doesn't know about furrydom. They do know about my artwork. ALL of it. Including the adults stuff. They also know we go to Anthrocon to enter the artshow, see the fursuits etc., but as for the fandom itself, they don't know about it.

Yes, it's a way of letting children know about ye fandom, and even if they don't feel as fascinated/etc by it, at least they'll learn to accept it.

This is very true, Joel.

I also talked to my sister a couple days ago. I had to ask her about her reaction when I was there 2 years ago for a visit. I had been drawing some anthro stuff and she saw one of the pics and gasped. She asked why I was drawing 'that'. I told her I liked drawing part human, part animals. Her tone was a bit repulsed so I hid the pic and drew normal things, like horses.

Well, I finally asked her about her reaction. Since I have a website and I think all of us siblings are able to draw, I wanted to show her my new works. I wasn't sure how she felt. Well, she said she was repulsed or anything like that but was surprised because she had never seen anything like that before. We talked a bit more and I gave her my URL. I also warned her there were adult pics on there and there was a warning page so if she didn't want to look at that stuff she didn't have to. She said ok. There was a long pause. She came back on and thought my art was great! Well, she is my sister after all, what else is she going to say?

'> Then she stated she had to go but will look at the other stuff later. She had only looked at the adult stuff! I laughed and told her she was a dirty girl and her reply? "Well, I am only human!"

So, she may not know about the fandom but she does now know about the type of art I create. My son and his wife know a lot about my art and are slowly getting pulled into hearing about the fandom. My sister? In time.

With my son and his family, I have created regular pieces of art for them, for now. I will eventually start creating some anthro stuff as well. In time.

Thank you all for your responses and advice! I recently found out it's going to be a boy...from four sources I trust. (intuition is great stuff) I've got another related question/theory... I slept with a stuffed kitty when I was a baby, and here I am feline...mostly, anyway. My roomie slept with a t-rex, and is a dragon...but grew up really interested in dinos. Do ya'll think there's any relation to what stuffed toy you sleep with as a baby and how you turn out as a furson?

There probably is some sort of connection there, yeah.
The plushie, or whatever it is, could have gotten engrained into one's mind as a thing of comfort, so as you grow up, you probably don't easily shake that impression unless you've made yourself significantly withdrawn from it and don't see it at all for a long span of time.
I wouldn't be surprised if there's been some psychological studies on these sorts of influences on peoples' lives.

I don't know if it does or not. I know I had a "Push me - Pull you" when I was little and I would never let it go. (If you dont' know what this is, it was a Llama but in the middle, it began another one. This way either end was a head.) I will sketch one so you can see what I am talking about. If this was the case, I guess I would have wanted to be a Llama instead of a pegasus, though, when I was old enough to really understand what animals were on tv, I fell in love with any show that had to do with horses. I thought they were the most graceful neatest thing ever created! I have loved horses ever since. Even had a couple as a young teenager.

I had... ok have a hound dog called sad sack wich still has pirde of place on the bookshelf my room, It may not have influanced my furry type but It is a reminder of where it all perhaps started.

It's not necessarily a direct link then, but I suppose if you get particularly attached to animal like things while young, you'll quite possibly retain that attachment all of your life.
I could see some psychologist having fun with this sort of thing, if he or she was particuarly bored in the first place.

Haha, this topic of the animal toy you sleep with having an influence on your furry side reminds me of something else. The Ranting Gryphon, 2, had a right go at a group of weres that had figured out the furry fandom's animal spirits mysteries for us all. They claimed that you can only have the spirit of an animal that lives near your area geographically. So, if you're a raccoon in England, or a polar bear in South America, you're aparantly just faking it. Needless to say, they were verbally ripped right apart by 2.
