I was bitten by a radioactive anthro fox and somehow managed to gain all the powers of a Furry.

Seriously though, I didn't BECOME A Furry, I always had furry tendencies. Growing up I identified more with animals, aliens and monsters than I ever did humans. I had trouble identifying with humans. And I wanted out of my human body bad. I spent much of my childhood suspecting I was a werewolf. My toys were all creatures. I had no use for human shaped toys. And all my favorite movies and TV shows starred Nonhumans. I befriended a lot of the neighborhood animals, including one wolf hybrid that gave me a lifetime love of wolves. I had all sorts of pets. Dogs, iguanas, rats, guinea pigs, gerbils, cockatiels, rabbits and ferrets. My dream growing up was to go to work at a special effects company making monsters for movies. Little has changed now that I'm grown.
You humans need to refine, alter, corral codify and measure things yes? Very well. I shall use your wristwatch to count out ten of your seconds. I suggest you use that time to run. For at the end of it I shall come for you and I will catch you and we shall measure the duration of your death... In screams.

I, too, always had furry tendencies. And therian, - furry therian? Furian? :3

I found I liked furry art, comics and stories, like that on DeviantArt (I didn't know it was "furry" until a month or so before when I discovered sites such as FurAffinity). I'm not into the adult side of the fandom (though, not against it) and I tend to avoid associating myself as furry publicly because of furry haters and my parents (in case they get the wrong impression), so I'm an "online fur", for now, at least.

Most of my favourite movies (especially animations) have non-human characters, those with human characters I just generally wished weren't (just imagine some blockbusters with furry characters instead). I actually tended to technical things like nuclear physics at the age of 10 or so, irl, then I went on to casual computer programming for sheer amusement; though these things were not "furry"-ish, I tended to feel I wasn't entirely human and felt less comfortable around humans (I was actually quite misanthropic and got picked on for it). My parents decided to create a menagerie of pets, and I later found interest in downloading animal photography and artwork (I eventually came across furry art, ofc). At 14-16, I somewhat found to find werewolves and similar creatures appealing, too, but found the media around it too gothic - though, at this point I started reading a fair bit about various animal behaviour. By the age of 17, I realised there were some good and even like-minded individuals out there but I still kept my distance, after a lack of such contact I feared saying the wrong things at the wrong time, I also observed much hate for those like me. At 18 I was getting quite depressed, it felt like I should have gotten involved in something like furry back then "earlier". Now I'm 19, I feel a little late maybe (media tended to act like animal-related interests were childish?), but there's obviously older furs than me, which I find reassuring. Over about a year, I downloaded 80,000 pictures (that I actually liked) attributed "Anthro & Animal Artwork" and bookmarked many more, I actually keep my Animal photography and highly realistic art downloads separate (which I lost a lot of between computers) which is aprox 20,000 images, judging from Windows Explorer.

It's less that I ever really 'became' a furry, as it was always an interest to me, and more that I just got a word for it.

I always liked furry stuff but I didn't know there was a whole subculture related to that. I remember spending a great deal of time daydreaming about how would my life be if I were a werewolf but werewolves are way too "terror movie" styled. I began to imagine what it would it be to have a tail, ears and claws and do many other things. I always felt different and rejected the idea that I was simply human, I wished for more. I behaved differently from everybody else in many aspects. I discovered furry browsing trough a list of subcultures (I did furry stuff at that time before even knowing about furry). I stood away from furry because of all the porn. After some time I thought I could find a decent furry forum, I didn't like FFC so I chose Furtopia, because of the filter.

im sick in bed :/. aaaanyways, keep me busy by sharing your life stories on how you became part of the fandom :)

I enjoy drawing anthropomorphic animals. I have since I was young. Drawing humans just wasn't for me, I could never get noses or hands right and when I drew animals I could do so well....so I combined the two. *shrug* I also have been writing stories about dinosaurs and other animals since I was young, probably since I learned how to write.

It wasn't until a few years ago that I even knew the word furry existed to describe those who enjoyed drawing or writing about anthros/fursonas like I do. It's nice to find like minded folks online to chat with.  (:

And that's about it!  :)

I've always had furry traits  :D
I found the fandom, like many, through the 'warrior cats' series by Erin Hunter.
I started drawing anthros and then found other artists and well, it really progressed from there ;)
I've never been fond of loony-toons (I love Porky though) but I loved Scooby Doo  (:

Well i was actually born one, always wore collars, shook my head to dry off instead of towels, had a fur coat with removable fur around the neck, and of course, i wore it as a tail  (: but it was only recently that i discovered what the term "Furry" was, and i,m proud to express it in public, why should i let some random person tell me what to wear, and or what to behave like  :) just because ONE person says its weird, doesn't mean the other 1,000,000,000 + people on the earth think the same. First post on the forums  :D, so tell me if i made any mistakes posting, or anything else.

My theory about my not being able to draw humans worth a damn is that I never drew them enough to really learn how. I learned to draw by constantly drawing animals and monsters and aliens. I had fun drawing them and creating worlds around them. But I never liked drawing humans so I rarely did and only then because I needed a human villain for my critters to beat up. Since I rarely drew humans I didn't have the practice it took to learn to draw them well because I wasn't interested in learning.

Because I felt a sort of kinship, is the best way I can put it without violating parole after killing aaaaaaall those people's lawns with fire.

Joking!

I became a furry because I've always been obsessed with the thought of anthropomorphism. Both in a social and military sense. This is the social outlet. However... My military love is not exactly expressable on this at all.
Artist by trade, Soldier by choice.

475 consecutive last stands. Funny how that happens, huh?

A 'Solus Cat' is my evolution on my older species, the Hreldren. But better.

Its kinda weird, I've always felt a special connection with the animals I live with. Don't get me wrong, Its not like I don't love my family or anything. But I always associate with animals. All my childhood, I thought that being a animal with my human mind would be really cool. I only really started noticing it recently. The artwork (as I've previously stated before) has been with me all my life. I don't know what it is, but certain games with anthro's in them really brought out emotion in me.(EDIT) I also dreamed about being a werewolf and what it would be like.

Watched a lot of cartoons growing up and began drawing stuff. Became cartoonist of my high school newspaper ,and later,  for my college paper. Ran a club newsletter and drew a monthly comic strip for it.  Later strips featured a furry character, and I didn't know what furry was at that time. Actually wrote a strip loosely based on a guy in our group nicknamed Moose.
While employed full-time, I was tasked with wear and care of the corporate mascot suit and enjoyed it very much. When I was downsized from the company, I wanted my own mascot suit of and built a crude one on a taxidermy form. (I could have chosen a less complicated character as this one had massive headgear.) I had only limited internet contact until the late 1990s and had no awareness of a furry community. When I had more computer access and could research mascot suits, it  led me to furry videos on YouTube. The Fursuit Spam Skit may have been the first such video ever viewed by me. These are my kind pf people.

I always liked furry art, and eventually started to draw my own. There was just something different about furry art than pictures of humans. As time went on I got a fluffy animal hat, with ears and a large tail. I used to wear it everywhere. School, restaurants, even just outside!  :D I had no idea that that the things I liked had a name for it, and a large following. I went online and started searching this stuff up, (i found this forum in the process  :)) and found out that there were conventions, and all that good stuff. I never actually sat down and said that i will "become" a furry. I just always was.  :D

Until you know what it is you can effectively "become" a furry but for me it was a few months ago when I became fervently interested in this stuff (not that i wasn't interested before that)  :D  , and knowing almost nothing about it I used to feel wrong about doing it. Until I just looked at myself in the mirror and didn't see what was reflected back at me.  :-[ odd i know but after looking around a bit i found this but before that I'd watch tons of stuff on Youtube.

I originally thought I was a furry my whole life until a few months ago I found the word therian, so I became furry a few years ago when I saw people talking about and drawing their fursonas on a virtual pet website I go to. Found a thread for furrys and looked them up and just fell in love with the(clean) artwork and suits.
I really need to come here more often XP
