Ballad of Elirand
« on: September 06, 2011, 08:39:11 am »
This is a little different than my typical fare, as it is actually not about love or anything. So here it is.

Ballad of Elirand

Through blade and storm victory was known,
Yet in the field of ash and bone,
One man walked the path alone,
To trace a dying cry,
The last strand to a broken heart,
Master of the swordsman's art,
Whose soul did not depart,
His friend would help him die.

With this done he would retire,
To settle in his mighty spire,
Wanting only to expire,
For he was the last,
The wizard had outlived them all,
When he stood upon that wall,
And orchestrated evil's fall,
Convinced his time was past,

Oh, Elirand,
You were living a lie,
Greatest mage in the land,
Only wanting to die,

The call came in many years,
They found a focus for their fears,
Heroes parted from their peers,
Seeking the mage of lore,
He was swept in the quest,
A tainted throne to divest,
With heroes brave and blessed,
Yet 'twas not before,

So he lent them all his power,
Hoping for that fatal hour,
Dark magics his flesh devour,
Fighting through that horde,
To his spells there came an answer,
From the dread necromancer,
Feeding from life like cancer,
Was the fell overlord,

The two battled with their spells,
Drawing on mystic wells,
Pulling fires from the hells,
The battle raged on,
From the smoke emerged the victor,
Proving whose hands were quicker,
Elirand's power did not flicker,
His evil foe was gone,
Oh Elirand,
You were living a lie
Greatest mage in the land,
Only wanting to die,

He was loath to discover,
The necromancer would recover,
The beast split his soul asunder,
Through his dark mastery,
For this lonely world to heal,
Elirand made an unequal deal,
He would have to steal,
The dark phylactery,

So Elirand was cursed,
In his sorrow he immersed,
Never quenching his morbid thirst,
In his immortality,
He was forever alone,
Sitting on that dread throne,
His last wish went unknown,
In his dark mentality.

Oh Elirand,
You were wanting to cry,
Most cursed in the land,
Unable to die.

Very interesting, there are some aspects that provoke deeper thinking and issues.

This was based legitimately on a character I played once. He was an elf who was the last survivor of the party that fought against a country trying to take over the world. He went into a retirement wanting to die to join his friends, but unable to kill himself because of religious beliefs in the setting.  He came out of retirement about a hundred years later, when our new party forced him to (I was playing a different character but the DM took my input on how he'd act and stuff). The evil lich that we fought lost the spell duel, but we couldn't destroy the phylactery, so my wizard had to take it on himself because he was the only one who could. The downside was becoming immortal and "never" being able to see his friends again.

(Note: He was a good enough wizard and the gods took his act of self sacrifice enough to allow him visitation rights in the plane of the dead)
