These are a few of my favourite things...

Flickr has recently redone the way is displays pictures and I can't work it out yet XD If you click the picture it will take you to a full-sized version though.

You can get to the traditional "View All Sizes" page by clicking the arrow pointing down at the bottom right of the grey area of the page and selecting "View All Sizes" from the drop down menu.

Dany is getting big. Her sheds are coming along thick and fast as she continues to have the growth spurts she should have had years ago.

She's also starting to bruminate, so she spends a lot of her time curled up in her next, fast asleep, or else with her head peeping out, drowsily watching the world go by.

She's also developed a behavioural oddity. She is territorial... Over one specific corner of her tank. In that corner, she will puff up, hiss, and beard. Moving even an inch or two away from it, and she is happy and snuggly. It's rather bizarre. I don't want to encourage that sort of attitude, but unless she starts to become grouchy in other parts of her tank, I'm happy to leave that to be her special lizard-only area.

Dany learned to swim today :D
Beardies are meant to be good at swimming, but Dany has never shown any real ability to - too uncoordinated XD Accidentally overfilled her bath a little today, and she started doing tentative, flaily laps of it. She worked out that lashing her tail side to side helps. She swims just like she's trying to stomp along XD It's adorable, but very noisy as she kicks up a lot of water. Swimming is going to be easier on her deformed joints that running, and it might help her to keep her weight down - she's getting a little chubby over winter.

Yeah, her claws are a bit long. Where her toes are deformed, they don't touch the ground and wear down well, so I have to manually clip them back if they get a bit long. It upsets her though, so I try to limit it. When she isn't in hibernation mode, she can usually keep them down reasonably, with the exception of the second toe on her right foreleg, which crosses over the third toe - I always have to trim that one myself to stop her hurting herself with it. Her back toes are less wonky (although still visibly damaged), and they wear down properly.

A me update:

After several doctors visits and appointments with a physiotherapist, the issue with my arms has finally been worked out - My nerves are sending bad signals to my brain and registering everything as pain. I'm now on painkillers for the foreseeable future (possibly for life).

On the upside, I can now do things again like hold a pencil, and am getting back into artwork and writing.

I've also recently "converted" to Buddhism.

-----

Dany is still sleepy and spends most of her time burrowing into my pocket until winter is over XD

Re: Loc's New Arrival

Today, a new arrival joined my family.

Meet Vivec. He's a corn snake (if you want to get fussy about his morph, he's an Amel stripe het hypo), born on the 14th November 2014. He's settling into his new tank. After being in a car for an hour, being a little cold, and winding up in a new place, he was reasonably happy to be held, all things considered - a little flighty, but not aggressive. He buried himself straight into his bedding and hid XD Peeked in on him an hour or so later and he was winding his way along the back of the tank, having a peek about.

I'll be feeding him on Friday (I have some pinky mice all ready to go - I'm going to give Dany one as well and see what she thinks of them), and leaving him to get used to his new home for three to four weeks. Then I can start to handle him and get him used to me :3 But the initial holding went well. He's deceptively strong - he wound his tail into my mala beads and I could feel him tugging on them.

Massive thanks to Fern - every time Fern and I went into the pet shop, we were squeeing over this little pink nose booping against the enclosure, begging to be taken home. Fern called the shop last week and put him on hold, and helped me move him in and get him set up today.

He and Dany are probably never going to get more than a glimpse of each other - While given enough time, I don't think they would care about each other's presence, I don't want to stress them out by trying, especially not now. When Fern visits, they might both be out of their tanks at the same time, but I'm not planning on letting them interact.

I'll be putting some more pictures up later, Fern took them on his phone and got some very good ones of him winding around my hands.

Very cool! I love snakes! :)

Best part of Florida were the wild snakes you could capture and briefly hold as they wandered in your garden.

Dany update: Cleared off some space in the living room to give Dany and I a window seat in the sun. Going to plop us both out there for an hour or two a day. It'll do wonders for my mood and might convince her to wake up. Gives me some time to groom her without worrying about her getting cold - Got the last bit of retained shed off from her third eye and some from around her mouth. She was out for maybe half an hour, and is already looking a bit perkier.

Vivec update: Vivec has been spotted again! He's hanging out around the water dish now, and didn't go slithering off when I moved this time. He's peeping out at me as I type this. He's now been sighted around both hides, inside the sock I put in to familiarise him with my smell, at his water, and halfway up the back wall of the tank, so he knows where everything is now.

Fern suggested I get a little webcam (one that can see well in low light, as Vivec's tank is pretty dark - while Dany has two lights, Vivec has none and gets his heat from a buried heat mat) and stream reptiles :3

Interesting hobby. You will need a large terrarium when it grows up. Unless your planning to
let it have the run of the house. That would handle any rodent problems you might have.

He's going to be upgraded to a bigger tank in a year, when he'll have another foot or so on him. Full grown, he'll be about 4-5 foot long at least. Snakes don't need as large tanks as some other reptiles, as they tend to have poor vision and are somewhat agoraphobic.

I have noticed most snakes tend to avoid humans given the chance.. Same can be said for
many humans too.  :D
