Furries in unlikely places?
« on: May 02, 2010, 10:34:56 pm »
Ever met a furry all so randomly out of the blue?

Anyways, I decided to take up (yet another) a modding project, a second third faction mod for supcom/fa, if not a fourth, and the head of this project, the Kardo faction, happened to have a wolf avatar; later I was trying to figure out if he was the same user that had recruited me to work on this project, and I found under the 'interests' field in his profile "furry".  :D
(and yes, he was the same user who recruited me on the other forum)

So... of the 5 people who have run mod-teams or gone solo making factions (as in, the project starters) for supcom/fa (fa = forged alliance - an RTS, not fur affinity), 2 are furries (including me). (One loves anime and went on to make a total conversion, one loves spaceships and also went on to make a total conversion before dropping off the face of the planet... I wish he hadn't done that. His spaceship mod would've ROCKED. And one was a total jerk to everyone making a mod that wasn't his, but fortunately he dropped off the face of the planet. Ironically, that fourth faction is the one started by the jerk, but it's passed through so many hands since then) :D

----

Another time was at french camp (for my french class), though the other guy was more of on the fringe.

And lastly I managed to get all my relatives interested in my art (unintentionally; they all just thought it odd that I'd sit around and draw all day, and thought I did quite nicely!), though I'm not sure if anyone got assimilated yet.  :D

Ive never met a fur IRL... Well, I may have met furs, but I didnt know they were a fur.  Im making progress though, Ive finally signed up on here, I originally never thought I would.  Im glad I did, as people on here are great.   I posted stuff on here that many people do not know about me... Also, it may not seem like a big deal to most of you, but IRL NOBODY sees ANYTHING I draw.  Most people dont know that I even attempt drawing.  It was a big step for me to post something I drew on here. I know that there is talk about some Chicago area furs getting together if we can ever get our schedules coordinated, Im looking forward to that.  As I everyone is so great on here, it would be nice to meet some of yall IRL... one day....
Dont fursecute me yo!

Oh, as to my IRL fur friends, I don't think they qualified as 'out of the blue' since they sought me out after me being fairly obviously a furry (my art, my obsessiveness of furry-related subjects, etc.)

I'll put a direct quote from the collar thread.

A friend of mine said to me "Oh, so after 7th period, when you went to class, some guy that I don't know asked me, frantically, 'THAT GUY WITH THE COLLAR!  WHATS HIS NAME?!?!'  I told him, and he said to me 'I MUST FIND My BRETHREN! I HAD NO IDEA THERE WERE ANY OTHER FURS AROUND!  YAAY' And ran off..  Good luck with that dude  :o"

I once saw a guy wearing a tail while riding a bike around in a neighborhood. We talked and discussed things like cons and art and comics and stuff. That is one of the few times I have met and talked to a fur IRL.

I've never actually had any interaction with another furry before, and the only place I've ever seen another furry is at college; they have their own club. I've thought about talking to them, but I'm not sure how to approach that...Plus I have some friends that really don't like furries, so I don't know what they would think :'(

Join the club!

And to be honest, I wouldn't WANT to be friends with anybody who won't accept me for the simple act of loving anthropomorphism.

Well, they're good friends, but they also happen to be 4channers, which would make something like talking to furries a very big deal to them, let alone being one.

I've only encountered one furry (that I know of) outside of the Internet and conventions.  There was a fursuiter at a ski resort that my Boy Scout troop was visiting for a ski trip.  I had the fortune of having the time and luck of momentary proximity to take a picture with my camera phone; I still have that picture today.

I, unfortunately, found out the following year that this fursuiter was not a regular of that ski resort, and was only at that ski resort for a brief period of time.  The employees at the customer service desk asked me if I was looking to hire this person (I declined) and then hypothesized that this "costumed character" (the term I used to refer to the fursuiter) was from the circus...

Needless to say, I was sad.

Several members (three, specifically) of my Pokemon League, including myself, are furries. That's three out of a group with fifty or so members - none too shabby! We've talked of conventions and fursuits in the past, though the primary activity there is simply to play Pokemon. One of them has even talked of getting a Raikou fursuit made, but I haven't seen him in a few weeks so I don't know if that plan ever came to fruition.

The way I know most of my furry friends is a a lot like Vulpes. A friend and I started a steam group called "The National Pokedex" and to enter you have to have a pokemon avatar. Of course there are a lot of furries there. I am a Luxray and my best furry friends are an Eevee and a Glaceon.

It's amazing how much Eevee and I have in common! I expected that group to have some furries in it but never the multitude to which it actually did.

As for IRL, none so far, but Eevee is coming to town soon!  :D

Oh, and then I got hit with an a brick of fridge brilliance; in his first pm to me, he commented on the name I used at that forum (C.lupus) asking me if I liked wolves, something most people either: a) don't know, or b) take for granted. Only the furries have ever really commented on it...

a guy who was in the same year and course as me at uni told me that he was when i said i was.

he was a right piece of work... the kinda person who you'd ask to do something, and he'd agree to do it... but then you could imagine him walking away and saying to himself... "... i'm not doing that for you!" ... i really disliked him.

anyway... i also get the feeling that sometimes he was just trying to impress me, cause when he found out i was gay all of a sudden he was too... when he found out i liked certain bands he suddenly liked them too. none of this is unlikely at all, but you got the impression from being with him that he was moulding himself to suit the situation.

if that makes sense.

anyway... that's my furry meet 'out of the blue'... if it counts

I've seen some people IRL in my area wearing tails and ears, but I've never actually talked to any of them. Nor does that necessarily mean that they are a furry, either...

Oh, and on this other forum I'm a member of there are tons of people who are obsessed with wolves and other assorted animals. But MOST of them don't know what furries are though (I know there's one, I asked her about it--but she doesn't log on anymore :( ). I bet if I told the ones that don't know about it they'd join the fandom in a heartbeat.

Evil, evil, evil, evil!

For a brief, sweet 5 minutes, I forgot that anime central was this weekend, so when I saw a girl in a hallway today at school wearing a fox-ears hat, I asked her if it was fandom related, and she told me she got it at A-cen... My dreams of any furries around had been instantly crushed.

This happened to me today and kind of a not unlikely place.

Well I was the local comic con with a couple of my friends and I was in fursuit. We were walking and a kid walked up and asked if I was a furry and I said yes. He was really happy and said his mom didn't believe that there other furries in Indiana. He told us he was a cat and hung out with us the rest of the con.

Just this morning, I went to swap meet and I'm pretty sure I saw a furry there. It was a guy with a sleeveless shirt and I noticed a rainbow marking on the back of it. I looked harder and could make out symbols on the color squares. I was too far to make out the exact shapes but I've seen that symbol before on some furry sites with different animal paw prints on the color squares (You know what symbol I'm talking about, right?). He wasn't wearing ears/collar/tail, just sunglasses. I didn't stop and talk with him because I was with my group home when we went there.

No, it wasn't a paw print. It was a small rainbow line of squares with black symbols in them. Couldn't make out the symbols but I've seen a rainbow line with paw prints in the color squares on some sites before.

Well, not many people around where I live even know what a furry is, so I don't think there's much chance of me randomly meeting a fellow fur. For example, this is an average conversation about my art:
Some guy: Hey, is that a wolf?
Me: Yep. Why?
Some guy: Because it looks like a wolf, but it's standing on two legs.
Me: That's just how I draw them. It's called anthro.
Some guy: Sounds cool. Bye!
Me: Hmm, I thought for sure he was going to say something about furries.
Some other guy: What's a furry?
Really, that has happened before.  x_x

^ I've had quite a few moments like that... I pretty much assume now that no outsiders will have a clue what furries are, not unless they live in Pittsburgh or frequent 4chan.

Furries have a tendency to assume that most non-furs hate them, but there's a bit of egotism in that assumption... really, most of the world doesn't care about us and/or has no idea we exist. Which is kind of a relief, comparied to the alternative!

I had a friend thats one that I knew even before I knew what a "furry" was. When I became one his actions, opinions, and views made sense and I found out that he was infact an anthro wolf furry.

I saw a guy at a truck sim forum and I forget what he had for an avatar but it something with a leopard in it and his name had leopard in it too. Pm'd him and asked if he was a furry and indeed he was. Actually was an online bf for me for about a year ^.^
