It made me think how one can look at any "group" and create a negative image. For example...
Sports Fans - "Are those the folks that sit around on weekends watching TV and drinking beer; have their own little fantasy world where they create imaginary teams and bet on which make-believe team is better; whose heroes are a bunch of guys who can't read, write or speak at a third grade level; and after the games beat each other up in the stands or riot in the streets? Boy, that is just weird!"
Anyone want to add another "group description"?

I was in the mall other day with my friend Sam, he was wearing a collar, a tail, and a "Glomp Me!" shirt. So we go into the shoe store and the guy who works there comes up to us, and he was like.. "What is a /glomp/? I don't consider myself old, but.. I've never heard of that." So we explained it to him. "Okay, that's weird. Why would you make up a new word for an every day action? And where would you get a /glomp/ me shirt?" So we rang out in unison "Otakon!". It was lovely, 'cause his reaction was.. "Oh. Y'all are /anime geeks/! That explains /eeeeeverything/!"
Anime fans- "Are those those fat guys who dress like Japanese girls, wear shirts in Japanese, and sit around all day watching cartoons in a language they can't understand? They even use japanese words in random conversations! What bakas!"

People who always have a book in hand and pocket protectors
Easly identifyable by glasses normaly very thick.
Also each have their own patern of spots called acne.
They are anti social and can never get a date until they own their own buisness and hire jocks to work at min. wage jobs.

Stereotypes for both of said groups are: Look ugly, have no social skills, and can't get a girlfriend.

I certainly don't collect stuff just to hope it raises in dollar value to pay for collage, bills, or whatever else these people hope their toys will pay for. When I was 7 when Star Wars came out, I PLAYED with my toys. I didn't keep them in the boxes and let them collect dust in the closet. All these action figures and other hot toys that come from popular movies and such should be played with by kids, NOT monopolized and hoarded by money seeking fanboys.

Proud I am, but not to the point of being obbsessive.SCAdians!! Those in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronisims) also take on personas, refer to outsiders as mundanes, and most of them are kind and have the live and live attitude. Study the middle ages and relive the way they should have been, sans bloody war, disease, and sexual discrimination. Often times you have folks dressing up in mostly homemade armour and beating the snot out of one and other with sawed off rattan dubbed "sword." Can be fun to watch. Sometimes it's just plain boring. People dress up in garb and drink homemade wine, and get into discussions about anything and everything. Mostly chivalry and period lifestyle. There are those that take it too far (which is something that is inherent in all groups of people).
I am also a gammer, roleplayer... not the console or comp games. I do leave the house or have people come over to game. But I have ran into my share of the unbathed gamer geeks that send me running in fear of D20 edition rule lawyers.

Which is why my least favorite group is that of the Animal Rights Activists - not Animal Welfare, which is a deeply charitable and respectable movement, but those people who think that eating a hamburger is cold-blooded murder. On the whole, ARA's are elitist, close-minded, insulting, and condescending individuals who view almost all meat-eaters in the most unfavorable light possible. The really sad part is that exceptions to this sterotype are rare and wonderful things; I've seen only one so far that seemed to have his head screwed tightly on his shoulders.

Goths: People who either think they're vampires or something or think that it's like, soo cool to be a constantly depressed outsider.
Nerds: They are usually inerested in mathematics, and seem to enjoy doing things that are normally considered as work (like programming). The stereotype wears sodapop-bottle glasses, has acne and a very annoying laughter.

I'm a gamer with a night job. I don't look like much of a gamer... short, medium-build, long hair, glasses, semi-high-pitched voice and a somewhat 'cute' demeanor. Hell, even one butt ignored me in the shop and put back a game I was looking at. If it wasn't so rare I would've gotten it somewhere else...
Fun thing is, most the guys at the shops know about me now, so nobody's suprised anymore. Though they are sometimes schocked by pieces of my collection. I'm a player, but a horder, too. I'll play them all someday!
As for unmentioned 'odd' groups... not many that I have had experience with. The only people I know on a personal basis to know about my fuzzed tendancies is my own mother, whom actually related to me that she may have in one life been a ground squirrel. I hope I didn't eat her o_O.

What classifies someone as a "gamer"? Just playing lots of video games? Or do you have to do specific games - like role playing games or war/history games?

But, there's still some (albiet not very heated) argument over the subdivisions... "hardcore", the ones whom can beat certain games without looking. "Casual", those who play rarely and only for passing amusement. "Collectors" who just piss everyone off by hoarding rare games yet never using them.
By the subdivides, I'd be a casual collector with minor hardcore tendancies. I like rare ones, I -am- a general hoarder, but I play them all. But the numbers... I can't be a complete expert on my entire collection. Maybe if I had no job, no need to sleep and never had to ingest foodstuffs, but...
What I think is stupid is the rabid system loyalty that used to exist in the Genesis and SNES era. Owners usually -hated- each other. People were shunned for not playing whichever system was locally 'in'. It exists these days, but at a less vehiment level. I was a Nintendo fangirl 'in the day', but I was curious about the Genesis. I had a friend whom had one (we both had a mild fascination with X-Men, too) and I so wanted to visit his home and share some quality gaming, but alas, I was never allowed. The division was mainly -caused- by the cost involved. $60 apiece for new cartridges, the systems were... what... $100 or $150? I don't remember console price... but the Saturn was $200 when it debuted, albeit with the three game inclusion pack.
I'm ambivalent these days. If I love a game, the system is less important. Unless it's the Saturn. It's my pet system. Purchased four years + after its death, it still has suprising and interesting titles. Come on, Super Tempo was actually really, really good, albeit unheard of! Its predacessor, Tempo 32x wasn't a quarter as good... but they learned.

People who ware thick glasses, can type incredibly fast. Usually geeks are interested in scientific things, such as mathematics, physics, engineering, etc. Most computer geeks spend hundreds of dollars on computer reference books, and are working on place to make a super computer with home computer parts (that's my project for next weekend, actually...). I'm a bit of a computer geek...
Gamers:
People who sit in front of a computer, gaining weight, and learning precision mouse control. They consider this a highly-important part of life; a form of art. Gamers hope one day to become professional game players and get money for it.
Speaking of gamers, has anyone met PerFecTioN in any games?
He plays mostly first-person shooters.. I know him personally. He's ranked #1 in the world in a few games (dunno if he still is this month), and is a paid beta tester for Strike Force.

I'm a fur, semi-geek, semi-goth, RPer', semi-gamer, anime-geek(can't get much but love it. >.<), ex-trekkie & ex-Star Wars groupie(Still go to sci-fi cons sometimes but was never a fanatic) and I still have an addiction to sci-fi books and fantasy(what I can get fantasy wise at least). -EDIT- I think I was recently pwn'd by PerFecTioN. It sounds framiliar.
