Halloween 2020 is dead.
« on: October 04, 2020, 10:50:09 am »
Halloween is pretty much dead (Depending upon where you live.) this year due to coronavirus outbreaks. But, there are a few alternatives in this article:
https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/22/health/halloween-cdc-guidance-wellness/index.html

But that doesn't mean we still can't talk about it. ;) so I'm curious, what are everyone's thoughts on the following:

Favorite or least favorite costumes you've worn on past Halloweens?
Been to any costume contests?
Favorite or least favorite candy you like to get during Halloween?
Any haunted places in your neighborhood, city, state?
Scariest trick you've played on somebody or was done to you?
Do you like to cook and make Halloween treats at home?
Favorite or least favorite Halloween tv shows and movies?
Do you have any fears or scared of different places, etc.? Things like the number 13, black cats, going into cemetaries, etc., etc.
Favorite or least favorite classic monster villain such as Dracula, the Wolfman, Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc.
Put up any Halloween decorations around your house, neighborhood or not?
Do you like to buy and carve pumpkins or not?

Well halloween isn't really a thing here but we do have a holiday that involves dressing up but it's not for another 6 months. I celebrate it but I don't dress up. If I had a fursuit , I would probably just wear that.

OK, I'll have to post this in two. Wont allow me to post this all in one box.

Awesome thread Kobuk!

Costumes? Not really a costume. More like a prop. When I was growing up you could get "GLOWING EYES". They were these plastic, glow int he dark things you'd stick over your eyes. Then squint hard to hold them in place. There was a routine to wearing them. After getting your candy you'd take them off. Hold them up to the porch light. Stick them back on and go to the next house.

Contests? Only once.

Candy? Favorite candy bar of all time is Baby Ruth. Least favorite is candy corn. Seriously think you could melt those down and make candles.

Hauntings? Yes.

Tricks? Loved playing with phobias. The things you can do with strobes. One year I set a few on slow flash. Put them in rooms visible from the street. Was told the next day some kids refused to go to my door. A friend of mine had a huge wooden deck off the front of his house. Stood about three feet high. Put a few strobes underneath. aimed them straight up so they would shine threw the gaps. We watched as people would climb the steps, then turn around because they or their kids were afraid to cross over the deck.

It's been said that rats can gain access to your home by climbing up threw your toilet. I prefer to use the front door.

Cook? Nothing really Halloween themed.

TV and movies? Don't like gore. Favorite halloween themed movies are 'A Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Haunted Honeymoon".

Fears? Halloween like or themed? no.

Classic Monster? All tine favorite is a werewolf. Never liked vampires. Even as a kid. Lead me to come up with a saying. "Useless as a headless vampire."

Decorations? No. When I was married we would put up a large graveyard walk through haunt. Over one hundred tomb stones, corpses, rat, jack-o-lanters and the like. All DIY. Even got a life sized medical skeleton. he now sits in a chair in the basement. This all started because we had to have the front yard dug up. Sewer collapsed. This left the front yard in really bad shape for Halloween night. So we quickly made up some props. Got a bunch of dead branches. Stuck the branches into the dirt and covered them and the props with spider webbing. People loved it!

Pumpkins? The wife and I used to carve way to many. Spent a small fortune every year. All in classic faces. Never got into the artsy stuff. To me the smell of a lit candle in a real pumpkin is the smell of Halloween.

So let's talk costumes for a sec. ;)

What are some favorite Halloween costumes (Doesn't have to be furry.) that you've seen in stores and/or people wear?
Any costumes that you think just plain suck that you dislike for various reasons?
What are some costumes that you've worn in the past? Scary? Goofy/comedic? Gender bending/crossdressing? Something else?
Did you ever make your own costume or did you prefer to buy/rent one?

When it comes to costumes, I stay away from the "cheap stuff" as much as possible.  :P
I'm also tired of seeing (and people wearing) the same old/same old classic stuff like vampires, werewolves, Superman, etc., etc. Some people don't seem to have any originality/creativity when it comes to costumes.  :P

Growing up we had those plastic masks with eye and mouth holes. Always chose skulls, ghosts and monsters. But never a devil or a vampire. The costumes I've always disliked, even as a kid? Anything cutesy. Never like cutesy decorations either. I'm talking the overly big eyed, large smile, rosy cheeks candy coated super cutesy cuddly decor. Not even for Christmas.

I don't know if I've ever had a favorite costume. I've seen so many good ones throughout the years. I think the best of them have always been put together by the wearer. Even if it's all store bought stuff.
When we did our Halloween walk through we had a group of kids show up wearing baseball hats and coats. About a half hour later the same group came back. They had all switched outfits. We had a good laugh, gave em candy and sent them on their way. It's all about the fun.

The only costumes I've ever made were for cons. And a few things to wear on stage when I used to play in rock bands. Back in the 80's that was expected. Do a google search for '80's rock band look'.

When I was about 5 I think, my parents dressed me up as Steve Austin from The Six Million Dollar Man. Then when I was about 7 or 8, I went trick or treating as a STAR WARS stormtrooper. I didn't like the costume much. I think I wanted to be Luke or C-3PO instead?
After that, I hardly trick or treated at all. Never dressed up. Never went to any costume parties or events. And never got invited to any. Halloween costuming pretty much fell to the wayside.  :'( As I got older, I did think about costuming as Detective Sherlock Holmes. I always liked that character. Another choice would be one of the Doctors from the Dr. Who tv series. But if I can ever save up the money, I really do want to get a replica STAR WARS stormtrooper outfit.

Those stormtrooper/ darth vader suits are pretty awesome.
I know someone who every year dresses up as a very clever play on words.

Kobuk, Halloween is never dead, so long as ghosts exist, children eat tons of candy, and there are costumes to make/wear. :p

To answer your questions:
1-My favorite costume will likely be the one I am wearing this year, a Ghostbusters dress with a "proton pack" and a red pixie wig (I'm gonna be Janine lol)
2-I don't think so! At least not intentionally haha
3-I LOVE Reese's and mini Butterfingers bars. Second up are York peppermint patties, third Hershey's bars, and the bottom of the list are sour or gummy candies.
4-There are several abandoned hotels, the museum I worked for, and my apartment are for sure haunted here in SoCal!
5-I hate it when people sneak up behind me and scare me. Ugh!
6-Cook? Eh. I do love Halloween candy and cookies, though. And apple cider is the best.
7-I like campy vs scary stuff for Halloween. X-Files, Ghostbusters, 90s cartoons with a Halloween twist, that kinda stuff.
8-Opening an umbrella indoors, dropping salt, going into large warehouses/empty malls at night...def superstitious of that!
9-I liked the Wolfman, the Mummy and the story of Frankenstein the best.
10-I love to decorate for the seasons, Halloween is fun to decorate for, even if nobody stops by!
11-I used to carve pumpkins as a kid, but I hate the smell and I'd rather get a fake one instead.

Well Halloween for me is going to be an all nighter with friends. Along with an assortment of drinking games. It may not be what I wanted to do on Halloween but at least I have friends to hang out with.

I'm honestly not really buying the lock down idea anymore. We can't go on locked up forever. Of course you should social distance and wear a mask but you have to get back to life at some point.

There's a difference between getting back to life with certain restrictions in place to lessen the chances of passing covid and staying in lockdown.
Both are equally valid and have their place, it depends on what the rate of infection and transmission is if you ask me. Take texas for example people refusing to wear masks, still not following social distancing guidelines, acting as though there isn't a virus going around.

Yes some folks are taking it serious but the public at large are mostly just ignoring it cause they're tired of hearing about it. Texas is a state that absolutely should do a hard quarantine because the public are idiots.
Colorado on the other hand, while still having a percentage of idiots who refuse to wear masks, has a rather large amount of people who are sensible about how they go out in public. they give others their space, they wear masks, they wear gloves, they keep sanitary. Again it isn't every single person in the state but by and large more people act intelligently and responsibly.

Those are the only two states I can really speak about cause I live in colorado now and I have trust worthy friends in texas, one of whom works in a hospital in houston.

First store-bought costume was a Collegetown Bugs Bunny suit. A thin plastic mask (Think Solo cup construction.) held on with thin sewing elastic and a satiny coveralls with reflective paint. Worst costumes--Hobo--burnt cork smeared on face and torn up clothing, or bed sheet ghost. One year it was misting and the sheet got all clingy and damp. another year, it actually snowed.

Actually made the finals for a radio station costume contest at a reservation casino: A moose superhero. Later reworked it into Bullwinkle and won a workplace contest. Also tried to cosplay the milk wagon horse from the Porky's Prize Pony cartoon--rubber horse mask with white union suit over clothes with yarn tail and a horse collar fashioned from a foam ring with knobs sticking out.

As far as candy goes, we always loved full-size candy bars (no "fun size" yet), but were suspicious of any homemade treats or apples--unless we knew the folks handing them out.

I figured for this Halloween, I'd dress up as Jade. Then maybe go chase some cars, growl at the mailman, or play a trick and dig holes in people's yards, or whatever else german shepherds do.  :D

Oh boy...
This German Shepard is growling at his pet dog Wanda.  She is such a meanie.
Keeps digging holes, barking at nothing, and won't listen to anything I say!

For this Halloween, I keep hearing TV news people say that kids are trick-or-treating, and I thought it was cancelled.  Crazy.  Well, I already ate the candy, and my front porch light burned out, so I  guess I will be sheltered-in-place this year.

I wanted to at the very least walk around the park in the suit, but I won't.  This place is rather...close minded.  :(
Man I miss my old town where people wouldn't threaten you for what you believe.

I had hoped I had An American Werewolf in London on DVD but I don't.  I wanted a parody/comedy/horror for this Halloween.

Usually on Halloween night this part of town is jumping. Kids in droves crowding the streets. People having BBQs and parties. This year is totally different. Only two porch lights on. With no one on the street. I saw a single car. Didn't stop. Just drove down the street. This actually makes me happy. Yes, next to Christmas Halloween is a big deal for me. However people's lives and families are still more important than any holiday. Glad to see folks taking this seriously.

There were 4-5 kids in their teens trick-or-treating while it was still daylight here. Got dark after 7 PM so I took time to cook a couple hot dogs for supper. Then set up on the front porch with a couple lanterns and a bucket while wearing my GSD partial. My deluxe fursuit heads have fans which could pull any COVID right to me, so best to not wear them. Gave out 4 Tootsie Pops and 4 Kool-Aid drinks, and that's all.
