I play a Fender Gemini II acoustic guitar....it is all I play....it is my pride....
I play all sorts of styles of music, but mainly light acoustic rock with a touch of the blues.......I love the 7th chords.....
Just out of curiosity, I'd like to know what kind of music any of you who happen to play guitar play

I've been playing pretty much every day for almost two years now.

I've got a Yamaha F-310 acoustic and a Sonic G3 electric.

On my acoustic I tend to play a lot of soft-rock, emo, heaps of old-school rock (The Eagles, Led Zepplin, The Animals), and a bit of blues.

On my electric...a lot of rock, punk, metal and the like.  Right now I'm learning songs by Filter, AFI, A Perfect Circle, Muse, The Darkness, Cannibal Corpse and Def Leopard.

Well I'm self taught and I have a Black "Texarcana" guitar made in indonesia, and a 80's era Squier strat with a late 70's Marshall amp.I used to have a pretty good assortment of guitar magazines with songs written in tablature which I'm better at reading. As of late I've been exploring open tunings which make playing slide a lot easier.

Mine is a self made guitar, originaly it was a "fender" but then the Fender logo started to fall aparts so they knocked the price down. I play stuff like BOwie, radiohead(ok computer cd, the bends cd, creep), a bit of U2, lots of nirvana riffs, mettalica riffs, placebo riffs, smashing pumpkins, STP/scott wieland, and anything that remotely sounds GLam Rock.

What style I play, Bluesy Glam rock with a hint of Grunge.

I have an Applause by Ovation.
It's a little travel guitar, but I love the look and sound of it.
I wouldn't up-grade to a different guitar for the life of me unless I just had to.
Anyway, I play a lot of Celtic tunes, some general folk tunes, lots of ballad type stuff, T.V. and video game tunes, ect.
I've also played lots of Christian and Gospel type stuff. Living here in the South you almost have to. I never really cared for the musical style of most gospel or contemporary Christian or whatnot, but being in a predominantly Christian comunity...lets just say MOST opportunities to play around here involve some degree of gospel music of one form or another.
Anyway, I'm somewhat out of practice at the moment. I live with my uncle, and he's a guitar "expert". In other words I can't really practice without getting his criticism. Basically he's into 60's and 70's rock, and he apparently thinks everyone should play in that style. It's really hard to practice when you've got that fealing like someone's peering over your shoulder watching you, just waiting to find something to criticize you over. It's worse than back-seat drivers!

I don't really mind criticism... I just don't like when someone hands me a guitar and everyone is just watching...waiting to hear something good... puts me on the spot... I guess I have terrible stagefright...

I hate it when someone "volenteers" that you play guitar and a out of tune guitar is handed to you and your expected to do something entertaining. Talk about being put on the spot.

That happens to me all too often... or some people just have very low-quality instruments that make it impossible to play good... I like playing on my Fender acoustic - - it's my favorite guitar... sounds great and the strings are perfectly set above the neck... great for hammering and bends...

I just dug up my Ukulele today... still in tune, still fun to play... I bought it awhile ago for only $11 on ebay...

Though I seldom recordmusic withguitar, does play electric guitar. Uses BC Rich Warlock & Bich, along with an Epphone doubleneck 12/6. Mainly does techno to thrash with some prog jazz elements for guitar playing.

Can mess around with acoustic but prefers not. LOL.

I've played the Electric Guitar for about 3 years now and when I first started I tired a little grunge but as we all know that isn't something that takes a lot of skill.  Shortly after that I began listening to Tool and Clutch and because of that my songs have adopted a Clutch like sound with lyrics that actually have a story hidden amoungst them along with vocals that sound a little like Tool.

My band - Mabus - Recently played at our towns Community Center along with a Cristian Punk band, Adicus.  We both switched back and forth durring the concert and tickets were $10 each.  The room were were in can easily horld 5 to 6 hundread people comfortably but we had a very nice turn out of 832 people.  30% of the profits went to the center, 25% to us, and the rest to the local Candian Legion.

Anyways, there's my musician story for now :D

I can't play the guitar, but I like to pretend.  My claws are way long, so I can't play Violin anymore.
You guys are lucky to be able to play portable instruments.  I play stuff like...piano, drums, and vibraphone.  >.<

Hey, and welcome to the board, fellow musical fur, Kodah!

Heh, the guitar is basicly a portable piano with different techniques, look, and sound.  But the rest is the same, I swear :D

I'm wondering, for the people who play the guitar what do you play in?  Most of our songs are in Drop-D.

Oh and thanks for the welcome ^.^;

I usually play in either Regular Tuning, 1/2 a step down or drop D.  And there is a Filter song I like playing where you have to tune the 6th string down to A, I dunno if this is an actual Tuning though.

Wanna play stuff in Drop C but my tuner's too fiddley...

I play lead guitar in a local band.  You can actually check out some of our music on my site Drake's Den.

Our music can be describe as hard edged alternative rock.  I grew up on hard rock and heavy metal, so that certainly influences my playing.  However, I have had training in classical and jazz guitar as well.  I took two semesters of classical guitar lessons when I was in college.

I've have three electric guitars. One is a collectors item now, it is a 1985 (first year of production) Paul Reed Smith.  I also have a Steinberger (yes a headless) guitar and a Heritage (think Les Paul).  I play the Heritage the most at the moment.

I play with a Peavey Amp and i have two DOD distortion pedels.. a Metal Maniac (crap) and  a Grunge Pedel.. i'd love to get a bass one of these days and i'd also like to get my hands on an FX Pedel some time :D

I've played guitar for about 8 years, and I own a lovely old nylon stringed classical guitar and an Epiphone les paul custom. I hate to say it, but the Epiphone that I bought was a mistake. The electronics inside have given me no end of trouble, the pickups were wired back the front, and the neck feels like it needs replacing. The guitar isn't all that durable either, I'm afraid. It was a good first electric guitar, but that thing is so gone once I get my Ibanez JS2000.

As for amps and effects, I still have my old Fender Frontman amp. Once I get some more money, I might pick up an acoustic amp, or something like that, but new guitar comes first. I have a Zoom stomp box for effects. Its not bad, but I could do better.

Righto, onto musical taste. I mostly play things that I find interesting, different, or technically challanging. Right now, I'm into Dream Theater, Pantera, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and some other alternative things like Radiohead and Muse. I've also been composing my own music for some time, and I enjoy using different tunings and modal progressions to develop a song. The only thing that I HATE about writing music is the need to notate it on manuscript, otherwise it disappears and I can't remember it.

I also learned piano for 3 years, and can play bass and drums.
BTW, thats an awesome guitar you got there, Gidgie! :)

I play, sort of;  I can listen to a song and play rhythm/accomp. to it without too much trouble, but can't play lead to save my life... I'm better with drums, esp. Djembe or any other "hand" drums.

I have an old no-name acoustic guitar that sounds great, and an Epiphone Les Paul electric that I love... wrote and recorded demos for a couple songs, no biggie. I am self-taught, but I tried to take a class to learn for real and bombed, as I can't seem to shake playing by ear... Tried my hand at mandolin too, was a little better at that.

I hate the "here's a guitar, play something!" nonsense too, but it has also been fun to play with someone else as accompaniment at parties...

I play anything really, if I can figure out the chords and tuning.

I'm working on trying to learn Reason, Finale and Cakewalk Home Studio now to see if I can make my lousy songs sound halfway decent

I prefer 1/2 step down, but I do play some of my songs in standard and even almost 1/2 step higher....just dropping the E string to a D is not something I am too fond of.....I love using a capo also....

I've been playing guitar for a total of 5 years, but I've only been playing seriously for about 2-3 years.  I have a crappy Peavey Raptor Plus with a Rage 158 amp, and a DigiTech RP50 effect pedal.  I have never taken lessons, and I really suck actually.  I don't even know what all the strings are called, I know about 7 or 8 chords, next to nothing about scales and arpeggios, and my skill overall is ameteur.  I learn how to play just by listening to songs and duplicating the tunes.  I'm pretty good at Spanish guitar improv, tapping, writing songs.  I have one I'm writing right now, but it isn't done yet.  I might post it on my site soon once it's finished.  I want a new guitar and amp really bad.

I want the ESP Xtone Paramount PS-2V with chrome hardware and see-thru red finish, maybe with a custom logo and inlays, and if I have the money, better-than-stock pickups.  I don't know much about guitars, supplies, accessories, etc.  I can't read notation, only tablature.  I just learned basic fingerpicking by playing "Tesla - Love Song"  Eddie Van Halen introduced me to tapping (not him in person, just his music.)  I will take lessons soon, hopefully, just to get a grip on the reality of the guitar universe.  AKA skills, methods, scales, chords, techniques, aural training.

I love to listen to any music from the 80's and below.  Led Zeppelin, Dokken, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Queen, Guns N' Roses, Scorpions, Whitesnake, Steppenwolf, Vixen, Danger Danger, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Police, Men At Work, Pat Benatar, Blondy, blah blah blah, I could go on.  The only bands I like nowadays are Crush 40, Subway to Sally, and Super Furry Animals.  Rock on.

As for me, I've been playing off and on for about four years now, but I've just recently been getting back into it.
I have a Washburn Dimebag 333, it's awesome, got a great deal on it. And I love the Floyd rose bridge, can do some crazy stuff with it.
I play a lot of Beatles, some Floyd, a bit of Jefferson Airplane, and some Hendrix. I spend a lot of time messing around, making my own stuff. Sort of psychadelic type stuff, and general rock. (The good stuff) Eventually I'll get some of it recorded, but I'm focused on a bunch of other stuff right now.

Triad, you listen to some good music....I too am trying to record....I'm gonna buy a 4-track cassette recorder, nothing real special, but it's cheap....
So you play psychadelic stuff...heavy...I play all kinds of stuff...mostly acoustic tho..like ukulele and mandolin and acoustic guitar...Do you play rythem or lead?....

I usually play lead, but I'm versatile. When I'm not playing guitar I play a bunch of other things, keyboard, bass, drums, trombone, pennywhistle (yeah). The two instruments I really want to learn though are the sitar and bazuki. But that'd take a while..
Acoustic is cool, I'm learning some beatles acoustic songs at the moment (Here comes the sun, across the universe..). I think it's cool that you play the mandolin. I've always loved those!

Before you get a 4 track recorder, you may want to look at the audio recorders for the computer.  They provide a lot more versatility than a 4 track recorder in working with the material you record.

Price range of computer solutions start at free for something like Krystal Audio Engine, to semi inexpensive for Tracktion and then in the several hundred dollars and up for the big name audio sequencers.

I just purchased Tracktion myself and I'm finding it very easy to use.  A plus with the computer route and an application like Tracktion is that there are many free drum machines and software synthesizers that work with the program so you can have a whole 'virtual band' playing with you.

If your interested in a bit of what can be done doing recording on the computer you can check out the music on my Furtopia site: Drake's Den: Music.  The music created by my band was done in a recording studio that used a computer to record everything and the latest solo piece on there, Melancholy Train is all done recording my guitar playing into FL Studio.  I haven't posted anything done using Tracktion yet, but the next song in my site will likely be created  using Tracktion as the main application.

Good luck with recording with whatever you use.  And remember, to most importantly have fun doing it.

I've tried a couple of computer programs and they seem so much more complicated for me than a simple cassete recorder....besides, my mic and cd burner are broken and I'm not looking to do anything real proffessional...I just can't find anybody else to play my music or instruments, so that leaves it all to me to play everything....a one-man-band, if you will.....but thanx for the tips  :)  good help is always appreciated.....

I play a Taylor 214, spruce top, and sapele back/sides (I think it has a rosewood fretboard)--no electronics, but I doubt I'd use 'em anyway.  Man that baby sounds delicious!

My electric is a Godin LGT, which I rarely play.  The specs are as follows:

Body - maple
neck - one-piece mahogany
fingerboard - indian rosewood
pickups - 2 single coil, one humbucker (I think I'm interpreting that right--I don't really know what any of this crap means, I'm an acoustic player!;)
bridge - schaller trem 2000 (I had it locked because I never used it and the guitar kept going out of tune)
machines (what I call "tuners") - Schaller locking
controls - 5-way switch, volume, tone

I also use a Fender tube amp which sounds yummy--really smooth and bluesy.  The Godin isn't really designed for the amp I have, it has more of a hard edge to it.  A rock guitar.  I guess that's why I don't play it.  I like rock, but I don't know how to play it, I'm more of a blues/folk style guitar player.  I shoulda gone with a Gretsch or a Reverend I guess.

Anyway, I'm *considering* selling my Godin.  It's an awesome guitar, and I got a kick-butt deal when I got it for $400 on ebay (it's worth between 7 and 8 hundred).

But my pride and joy is my Taylor.  Sweeeeet.  If I get a pickup I could plug 'er into the fender tube amp, that would sound so freakin' awesome!!!!

Taylor makes a good guitar....the 214....jumbo bodied, right?....I don't care too much for the shape of the body, but taylors are nice......I bet it sounds great tho....
Title: Do you play guitar?
Post by: Gril on October 09, 2004, 05:32:04 pm
There are different body shapes.  Mine is a "grand auditorium" style, designed for fingerpicking (which I do a lot of), but is also a great strumming guitar.  It's similar to the dreadnaught but not quite so chunky.  I'm a small person, so I shy away from big heavy guitars, and this one is comfortable for me to play.

The difference between mine and a dreadnaught is that the dread is big throughout the whole body.  I'm not a big fan of the dreadnaught myself--the look, the feel--so the grand audi is a good compromise between something too big and something so small that there's not enough body or sustain.

Anyway, the grand audi still has a "big butt", but is narrow in the waist, so it sounds different from the dread, plus it's a little easier to hold/play for me.

My dad has a nice top of the line taylor that has a really small body (I think it might be a grand concert, but I'm not positive).  When I play his it feels so tiny compared to mine, but I guess I'm just used to the one I play, hehe.

So anyway, they make various sizes/shapes.

One of the cool things I'm learning about acoustics (and guitars in general, really) is how important the wood is to how the guitar sounds.  I always thought the shape/size was the most important thing, but I'm learning that most of the sound quality comes from the type of wood used, where it's used, etc.  It's really fun.

Here's a picture of what my guitar looks like:

Mine has a little "birthmark" on the top, near the fingerboard.  It's a knot in the wood--looks really cool.  I like how it makes it my guitar, 'cause it's the only one with that birthmark.   :D

I have a HUGE acousic guitar which is really unexpectedly light. It produces the most beautiful sound
(Also Very loud! Even when a chord is played and immediately muted... it still rings across the walls!;). It has been fixed twice because it's soooo old. It's hand made by some wierd company. YAMUSA

I also have a crappy Wal-Mart Electric guitar. Nice sound but it weighs hella lot more than my acoustic.

I play Classical, sorta mexican style (gipsy kings), rock, metal, light rock and thats about it.

However I cannot stand country!!!

i play the guitar, and i feel i am rather accomplished. i can honestly say no one in my school can touch the way i play! my band has played at major venues around my area. bands of today *found on mtv* play at these venues all the time. i evened opened for skid row and anthrax before. my band is very progressive rock along the lines of tool and dream theater. we also play softer songs like rush.

i own three guitars and my trusty amp with pedal board. my guitars are a gibson les paul, an ibanez archtop, and a geetar i made my self.   it is a variation les paul made by my own hands and blood.

i am new to the forum so please forgive my length...

I just got my first guitar a few months ago. It's a Washburn electric. I'm still learning how to play, but i'm getting pretty good I guess. So far I only play songs from video games.
The Ninja Gaiden theme, Temple of Fiends from Final Fantasy, Terra's Theme from Final Fantasy 3, and i'm in the middle of learning Bloody Tears from the Castlevania games.
I love to play with the overdrive on, but my amp isn't all that great, so it doesn't put out the sound from it too well :p
