Do you play guitar?
« on: May 12, 2004, 01:33:41 am »
I play a Fender Gemini II acoustic guitar....it is all I play....it is my pride....
I play all sorts of styles of music, but mainly light acoustic rock with a touch of the blues.......I love the 7th chords.....
Just out of curiosity, I'd like to know what kind of music any of you who happen to play guitar play

I've been playing pretty much every day for almost two years now.

I've got a Yamaha F-310 acoustic and a Sonic G3 electric.

On my acoustic I tend to play a lot of soft-rock, emo, heaps of old-school rock (The Eagles, Led Zepplin, The Animals), and a bit of blues.

On my electric...a lot of rock, punk, metal and the like.  Right now I'm learning songs by Filter, AFI, A Perfect Circle, Muse, The Darkness, Cannibal Corpse and Def Leopard.

Well I'm self taught and I have a Black "Texarcana" guitar made in indonesia, and a 80's era Squier strat with a late 70's Marshall amp.I used to have a pretty good assortment of guitar magazines with songs written in tablature which I'm better at reading. As of late I've been exploring open tunings which make playing slide a lot easier.

Mine is a self made guitar, originaly it was a "fender" but then the Fender logo started to fall aparts so they knocked the price down. I play stuff like BOwie, radiohead(ok computer cd, the bends cd, creep), a bit of U2, lots of nirvana riffs, mettalica riffs, placebo riffs, smashing pumpkins, STP/scott wieland, and anything that remotely sounds GLam Rock.

What style I play, Bluesy Glam rock with a hint of Grunge.

I have an Applause by Ovation.
It's a little travel guitar, but I love the look and sound of it.
I wouldn't up-grade to a different guitar for the life of me unless I just had to.
Anyway, I play a lot of Celtic tunes, some general folk tunes, lots of ballad type stuff, T.V. and video game tunes, ect.
I've also played lots of Christian and Gospel type stuff. Living here in the South you almost have to. I never really cared for the musical style of most gospel or contemporary Christian or whatnot, but being in a predominantly Christian comunity...lets just say MOST opportunities to play around here involve some degree of gospel music of one form or another.
Anyway, I'm somewhat out of practice at the moment. I live with my uncle, and he's a guitar "expert". In other words I can't really practice without getting his criticism. Basically he's into 60's and 70's rock, and he apparently thinks everyone should play in that style. It's really hard to practice when you've got that fealing like someone's peering over your shoulder watching you, just waiting to find something to criticize you over. It's worse than back-seat drivers!

I don't really mind criticism... I just don't like when someone hands me a guitar and everyone is just watching...waiting to hear something good... puts me on the spot... I guess I have terrible stagefright...

I hate it when someone "volenteers" that you play guitar and a out of tune guitar is handed to you and your expected to do something entertaining. Talk about being put on the spot.

That happens to me all too often... or some people just have very low-quality instruments that make it impossible to play good... I like playing on my Fender acoustic - - it's my favorite guitar... sounds great and the strings are perfectly set above the neck... great for hammering and bends...

I just dug up my Ukulele today... still in tune, still fun to play... I bought it awhile ago for only $11 on ebay...

Though I seldom recordmusic withguitar, does play electric guitar. Uses BC Rich Warlock & Bich, along with an Epphone doubleneck 12/6. Mainly does techno to thrash with some prog jazz elements for guitar playing.

Can mess around with acoustic but prefers not. LOL.
Enjoy living.

I've played the Electric Guitar for about 3 years now and when I first started I tired a little grunge but as we all know that isn't something that takes a lot of skill.  Shortly after that I began listening to Tool and Clutch and because of that my songs have adopted a Clutch like sound with lyrics that actually have a story hidden amoungst them along with vocals that sound a little like Tool.

My band - Mabus - Recently played at our towns Community Center along with a Cristian Punk band, Adicus.  We both switched back and forth durring the concert and tickets were $10 each.  The room were were in can easily horld 5 to 6 hundread people comfortably but we had a very nice turn out of 832 people.  30% of the profits went to the center, 25% to us, and the rest to the local Candian Legion.

Anyways, there's my musician story for now '<img'>

Heh, the guitar is basicly a portable piano with different techniques, look, and sound.  But the rest is the same, I swear '<img'>

I'm wondering, for the people who play the guitar what do you play in?  Most of our songs are in Drop-D.

Oh and thanks for the welcome ^.^;

I usually play in either Regular Tuning, 1/2 a step down or drop D.  And there is a Filter song I like playing where you have to tune the 6th string down to A, I dunno if this is an actual Tuning though.

Wanna play stuff in Drop C but my tuner's too fiddley...

I play lead guitar in a local band.  You can actually check out some of our music on my site Drake's Den.

Our music can be describe as hard edged alternative rock.  I grew up on hard rock and heavy metal, so that certainly influences my playing.  However, I have had training in classical and jazz guitar as well.  I took two semesters of classical guitar lessons when I was in college.

I've have three electric guitars. One is a collectors item now, it is a 1985 (first year of production) Paul Reed Smith.  I also have a Steinberger (yes a headless) guitar and a Heritage (think Les Paul).  I play the Heritage the most at the moment.

I've played guitar for about 8 years, and I own a lovely old nylon stringed classical guitar and an Epiphone les paul custom. I hate to say it, but the Epiphone that I bought was a mistake. The electronics inside have given me no end of trouble, the pickups were wired back the front, and the neck feels like it needs replacing. The guitar isn't all that durable either, I'm afraid. It was a good first electric guitar, but that thing is so gone once I get my Ibanez JS2000.

As for amps and effects, I still have my old Fender Frontman amp. Once I get some more money, I might pick up an acoustic amp, or something like that, but new guitar comes first. I have a Zoom stomp box for effects. Its not bad, but I could do better.

Righto, onto musical taste. I mostly play things that I find interesting, different, or technically challanging. Right now, I'm into Dream Theater, Pantera, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and some other alternative things like Radiohead and Muse. I've also been composing my own music for some time, and I enjoy using different tunings and modal progressions to develop a song. The only thing that I HATE about writing music is the need to notate it on manuscript, otherwise it disappears and I can't remember it.

I also learned piano for 3 years, and can play bass and drums.
BTW, thats an awesome guitar you got there, Gidgie! '<img'>

I play, sort of;  I can listen to a song and play rhythm/accomp. to it without too much trouble, but can't play lead to save my life... I'm better with drums, esp. Djembe or any other "hand" drums.

I have an old no-name acoustic guitar that sounds great, and an Epiphone Les Paul electric that I love... wrote and recorded demos for a couple songs, no biggie. I am self-taught, but I tried to take a class to learn for real and bombed, as I can't seem to shake playing by ear... Tried my hand at mandolin too, was a little better at that.

I hate the "here's a guitar, play something!" nonsense too, but it has also been fun to play with someone else as accompaniment at parties...

I play anything really, if I can figure out the chords and tuning.

I'm working on trying to learn Reason, Finale and Cakewalk Home Studio now to see if I can make my lousy songs sound halfway decent  ''

I prefer 1/2 step down, but I do play some of my songs in standard and even almost 1/2 step higher....just dropping the E string to a D is not something I am too fond of.....I love using a capo also....
