Free paws are fur's who prefer to go barefoot when ever possible. Some fur's actually decide to go barefoot to get closer to there fursona. It's so much nicer to actually feel where your walking.
I will always walk barefoot when ever I can.
I think of shoes like gloves for your feet I only ever use them when i need to.
I mean would you wear super hard gloves over regular glove's.
Human feet are just like animal feet, it's just because we always wear shoe's that are feet are week. Same thing for stinky feet the only reason they smell is because we wear socks and shoes.
I've been actually conditioning my feet lately by walking out in the snow for a short amount of time every day. After a while of this MY feet should be able to do just fine in the snow for a decent amount of time with no ill effects.
I would go barefoot all the time but I'm not exactly in a clean neighborhood so I have to worry about broken glass amongst other things.
Since I know it's not actually illegal to go into restaurants free pawed I've been thinking of doing that lately and seeing what the staff says when I quote proof that it's not against any laws.
SO how many free paws are there out there on furtopia. if if there are some tell us some of your free paw stories.
Also do any of you walk digigrade instead of the normal human walk, I've been walking that way for about a month now. Earlier i think it was a little tough on my ankles but now they've adjusted, and they don't heart any more. I'm also walking that way for training to be able to use my digigrade shoes better.
Now when I walk stand normally I feel like I'm being lazy or something.

Normally, I'm the kind who likes having socks on my feet. Keeps them nice and cozy, and they feel really comfortable. Sometimes, though, I'll go with just sandals and nothing else, usually if I'm feeling too lazy to put socks on.
When it comes to sleeping, though, I tend to alternate between socks and no socks. Sometimes it feels a lot better (and makes it easier to get to sleep) if I'm not wearing any socks.

I have ALWAYS hated things on my feet. Even slippers.
I some times wear socks to bed because i have raynauds... awful.
So, I can't condition my fet for cold weather, but otherwise I run around barefoot.

Have you ever tried walking a mile on a long gravel road bare-pawed? It builds up calluses marvelously.
Yes, during the summer months I rarely, if ever, wear shoes unless shopping or on some sort of surface like a blacktop that could be hazardous to my feet (or in the lab). However, the cold affects me more than in my younger years these days, so when the ground starts to leech away heat rather than donate it, I put on the shoes with some reluctance. Otherwise, I simply end up with aching toes, and that isn't fun for anyone.

I usually can't stand going free pawed! I love having clean feet too much, it's just one thing I need to have. I love the idea of feeling sand, gravel, and warmth from my feet, but I would need them cleaned to ever feel comfortable again. :)

I suspect that natural selection also has something to do with it. Having tough soles for our feet has not been an adaptive trait for like all of recorded history. And when animals' feet get injured, they just get infected and die.
Anyone ever see a Family Circus comic where the kids are like "Mommy, can we go outside BAREFOOT?" And they've got all these thought bubbles of lush meadows and flowers, and "mommy" has all these thought bubbles of broken glass and rusty nails. I can't help but remember that any time this subject comes up. >.>
Having said that, I only wear socks indoors when it's cold. Like right now.
Maybe sandals are the closest thing to "natural" for us, since they add padding (and nothing else).

Sandals are really nice since you can still feel the air and your feet aren't cramped at all.
I'll where them whenever I have to wear shoes, I just can't stand having my feet hot and cramped.

my grandmother was native american, so until i hit school age, i wasn't allowed to wear shoes anywhere. probably because of that, i prefer to be barefoot as much as possible. in the summer, i usually just carry flipflops with me, so that if i HAVE to wear shoes, i have them.

I like to go around bare foot a lot. In the summer I just ware sandalls or nothing at all. The only reason I usually ware shoes and socks is to keep my feet warm or safe if I'm going anywhere that has broken glass or anything.
In my years of walking barefoot, I've accidentally stepped on thorns, broken glass, bits of wire and once on a drawing pin. Thorns are relatively painless compared to stepping on nasty man made objects. Luckily I was inside the times I stepped on these nasties, so I could extract them and get them cleaned up pretty quickly.

I would happily walk barefoot in untouched woods since I wouldn't have any threat of stepping on something man made. why must man have to create such dangerous things and then put them on the ground. It makes me feel bad for the animals that can't protect there feet when necessary.

I think I'm the odd-fur out. I wear shoes all the time, whenever I can. If not, my feet get clammy and cold. My feet just feel a lot better inside something.
If it were perpetually summer, I would have no problem walking around bare-footed. I love the feeling of cool dirt underneath my feet on the excruciatingly hot days. I think I need to move to some tropical island or something... :)

When ever it summer hard to get me to wear anything I enjoy the feel of the grass on my feet as I sleep under the tree outside sometimes. The only time I wont take my socks off is in the winter here. Brrrr I hate the cold so much and ot go out in the snow barefoot just hurts a bit to much even for me.
No worries though when I can afford it moving from the cold Michigan to a state where it never snows. Ahhh no shoes or socks again.

It may not be against any laws, but it's gross and unsanitary. And -we- can get busted by health inspectors for allowing it. I'd ask you to leave if you came into the dining room I supervise. So would my boss.
That being said, I go barefooted when I can.

walking in snow is very nice. but it gets really cold after about 30 seconds

I'm a total free-paw, I don't wear shoes unless my mother makes me :P. I've had to sort of give up walking barefoot on the road because of the abundance of broken glass from the recycling trucks but I always go barefoot around the house and elsewhere. In the snow I will often go get the mail or feed the dog or something barefoot too. My parents roll their eyes but I don't care, it feels great ;).

In winter, I wear socks to keep my paws toasty, or shove my paws up under my mate when he is sitting at the computer. I almost always go barefoot. Only problem living here in the city and going barefoot, is druggies tend to leave their needles lying about. Ignorant people and kids leave broken glass everywhere, so I pretty much have to wear paw caskets when Im outside. :(

I wear socks whenever I can. It's kind of chilly here so I wear those thick, comfy socks.
When I go outside, I have to have my feet covered. I don't like walking on concrete, asphalt, grass, etc. without it.

I'm not a free paw, partly because I don't like having dirt and other unsavory things all over my feet. But I did read an article about it once that kind of scared me, because it showed diagrams of how human toes are supposed to be aligned...

Our shoes aren't shaped to fit our feet-- our feet actually deform to fit our shoes. And we think it's normal because we don't know anything else.

I used to be, and my mother was a hardcore free paw for a very long time. I still go barefoot in the house, but my paw pads have gotten soft agin. :( Years ago my feet used to be very tough and were even starting to darken. I used to go eerywhere in shorts and barefeet all the time. I even once stepped on a thumb tack and had it sink all the way into my heel (OUCH!) I barely felt it and when I looked and saw it I managed to pull it out no problem, no bleeding either. :)
Sadly those days are gone.I got to working more and more in addition of wearing shoes when I rode my bike because I'd go places that required shoes, and now my feet are really soft and sensative.
At least I havn't lost the ability to open doors with them. :D I love being able to grab with my feet.

i absolutely love going free pawed
when i go outside in the summer, no shoes, around the house, no shoes.
going to try riding my bike with no shoes without my mom knowing.
but i love picking things up with my feet and throwing them at my little brother. :D
fotunatley the bottoms of my feet are realy tough. once had somthing lodged deep in my heel, dug it out with a kneife. didn,t feel a thing and no blood. :)

I go free paw every now and then, but, for the most part, I don't. I would like to, but we live out in the country. Mesquite thorns and cactus are EVERYWHERE! (If you don't know what a mesquite is, you're lucky. Nasty thorns...) Not to mention, the guy that owned the place before us left metal scraps and glass all over the place. We're still digging up glass in our back yard...
So, yeah. Free paw is out for me, at least at home.

I only go barefoot indoors. I'm not really fond of walking around barefoot anywhere else as I don't want to get splinters/bug bites/rocks embedded in my feet.

i go barefoot around my house but other than that i cant because there are hills behind my house so its like very painful to walk and at schools i've had nails stuck in my shoe and you have to have atleast sandals for dress code.

I like wearing just socks. Mainly because at the minute it is COLD and my floor downstairs is tiles. Oh so very cold. In summer though I like barefoot mostly, always have done. Especially fresh morning grass with a bit of dew underfoot. Only problem is, as you said, due to this conditioning, our feet are weak and easily cut. And one thing that really is a pain, literally and otherwise, is a cut on the sole. Man. That hurts, but not just that, it is so awkward. It always opens up again.
I also do alot of stuff with my feet. Party because I am lazy, partly because I can. Picking up TV remotes, pens, etc. Lol. Why move when I don't have to?

I have to wear steel toes for my job (35,000lb airplane + bare toes = ouch), but I always go barefoot when I can outside of work.

I wear only socks in the house only. I have been known to take off my shoes in class.
I only wear shoes because my feet lose heat extremely quickly and because of sharp objects.

I usually like to wear sandals in the summer, but in Vermont in the winter, boots are the way to go. At least, when going to classes, back at the dorm, I usually wear just socks or slippers.

My feet are actually responding to the conditioning I'm doing. I walked out side in the snow today, it was about half in inch thick, and I was able to walk around for a while before my foot got cold at all. The feeling of snow melting underneath your feet is so unique and refreshing.
Plus it's just fun to look outside in the snow and see foot prints :D.

Try Califoirnia x]. The 110 degree ground has its own unique feel for your feet xD. I don't think I can get used to walking barefoot here.

Man, a lot of you open doors with your feet. Maybe I should stop opening them with my mouth . . . .
Anyway, I have a cat who has a history of scooting herself across the carpet when no one is looking. Therefore, I'm terrified to not wear socks. Even so, I don't think I would go Freepaw simply because I'm sort of self-conscious and embarrassed of them. Freepawing I know would be superfun, but I can't psychologically bring myself to remove my foot coverings amid other people. My family thinks I'm weird for this quirk, and has questioned my reasons for it, to which I can give no answer.
I'm actually thinking of getting wolf pads tattooed on my soles if I can muster the courage. I'm hoping that it can break me of this inhibition and I can freepaw like I want to.
But I still might not ever go free simply because of the shoe brand Safetrax (http://www.footstarworks.com/occapps2/english/eng_no_flash.jhtml). I truly cannot ask for a more comfortable fit from even a custom shoe!

I do like to free-paw alot of the time but becuse of the litter around i cant do it much outside i.e glass, nail's ect

I went around barefoot before that word existed (I think). We used to just be people who just happened to both be Furries and Bare Foot Lifestylers at the same time, but hey, if people just want to invent a new word for no good reason every time someone is a part of two or more lifestyles at once then whatever.
I used to go "free paw" a lot more than I do now. I used to almost never wear shoes even on frost or gravel or whatever.
Where I live now there are a lot of objects and sharp angles jutting out which just LOVE to stub toes. You can easily condition your soles to cold or rough surfaces, and you can even toughen them up to the point that they hardly ever get cut, but no matter how many times you stub your toe it still hurts. Consequently I generally have to wear shoes around here (not that I like it).
*Note: you should also avoid going free paw in cow pastures. The cow patties will make every cut and scratch on your feet turn all red and pussy. I found that out the hard way.

I like to go barefoot, except in weather like this. Especially in the summer. I would walk on the sidewalks, taking my dogs for walk, with nothing on my feet. But, if I go to a store or something, I have to cover my feet. I don't like people looking at my feet (almost 10 years of having an ingrown toenail will do that to you)

Today I climber up my front porch stair barefoot, and there was snow covering the stairs. I left a bunch of foot print behind me that really confused my older brother that didn't know i walked there barefoot. (:
the feeling of the snow melting under my hot feet is so good. :)

I like going barepawed, but its uasually not pratical for me. I live in an apartment complex, so I worry about burning my feet on pavement, or stepping in dog poo. In the country though, I love to go barepaw.
Artbutus, I see what you mean about toe alignment. One of the best things I ever did was have a pair of boots custom made for my feet. Once I got used to how they felt (nothing like sneaker) They became the most comfortable footwear I own.

When I was really little I used to run across the street in heat so hot you could cook an egg on the road. Well, maybe, I never actually tried >.> My parents would as me why and I'd say "To make paws!" I think I meant pawpads, not sure. And that might have just been because my feet were black after running acros the road :p
But now days it's almost a ritual. Right when the first heat of summer bakes up the sidewalk and roads I start walking on them barefoot for half an hour a day to build up some tough callouses to make ti through the summer. It's far more comfortable and very helpful when my cat slips out and we have to go chase her down fast XD

I definitely agree. I usually don't take my shoes off. I especially try to keep my socks on unless it is unbearably hot where I am or sometimes when I'm sleeping. I like my feet being clean as well. However, the main reason is probably that I do NOT like human feet...at all. They just creep me out for some reason. I can tolerate my own feet, but I don't like looking at or touching feet, especially others people's feet. If I DID have paws...real animal paws, I would be much happier to leave my feet uncovered.

I'd like to go barepaw but its not really practical where i live, to damn cold and the streets aren't exactly clean, plus i have to wear shoes at work anyway
I'm kinda used to wearing shoes or boots all the time though, i had to wear boots when i worked as a mechanic (and at college in the workshop) dropping a heavy lump of metal on them doesn't bear thinking about :o
I used to go about barefoot when i lived in my own flat, but since i live at my parents house now i usually wear at least socks.
saying that i have got quite thick skin on my soles, probably because I spend 70% of most days (when I'm working) on my feet, and on the few sunny days we do get in summer iIdo go around barefoot, well in my garden anyway.

I LOVE to walk bare footed, its a great feeling, but the only time I can walk free pawed is when I´m in school, in my house or in my comunity (Its small, very). I only walk digigrade when I walk up stairs or on all 4´s. I can´t practice walking digigrade cause I don´t have any special made shoes or anything close to it.
It´s not like I don´t like walking free pawed, its that I can´t everywhere. I live in Bogota, its pretty dirty. I´ve also tried walking in the snow free pawed, I like it but it hurts my paws :(
Anyway, I love it, even since I was 6, I would walk EVERYWHERE with flip flops or free pawed.

As a fellow Floridian, I wouldn't be able to imagine scalding my tender paws on burning concrete or gravel. It might be because I live in Miami (where it feels like hell is above the aquifer), or it may be my own foot-related inhibitions, but the idea of going outside without an inch of rubber underneath me is frightening.

I'm only a free-paw in the summer, it gets WAY too cold in New York this time of year :( And in summer sometimes the pavement burns m paws, so I wear flip-flops outdoors. I love going bare paw on the cool tiles indoors though. Ah, bliss.

Yeah, I actually don't know if I could do it in Miami o.o I'm an hour and a half away from Alabama's border, so there's probably about a ten degree difference between our two places :p But yeah, it's definitely not pleasant but about mid-summer I swear I can walk on anything and not feel a thing.

I'm only barefoot indoors, but the past month I've worn socks all the time. My feet are so cold right now, and I got on thick fuzzy socks. :(

in the summer i barely ever put stuff on my feet. say i was gonna take the dogs for a walk i'd just go barefoot cause it's only grass and a little tarmac...
also, if i was to go and do a gig i'd go free-paw... shoes are way too restricting...
and even the shoes i wear are free-feeling... skate-shoes just kinda loosely hug your hind-paws and you can slip them off and on at any point... they're awesome. unfortunately though, they're starting to make them tighter fitting for some reason. they're becominf more of a fashion statement than shoes for skating...
i kinda half wish i was hotter more often so that i could go free-paw more... but meh... i love the cold way too much

I love going free-paw. There's nothing i love more then the feel of grass and a good breeze on my paws. If i cant free-paw i'll wear sandals since it's the next best thing

free paw i've been recently training for a mor animalistic detro..-something srry not big fan of memorizing names of science ... oh well umm so i loved going free paw and when i used to do it i could walk one glass and not even have it pierce my skin but recently iv'e been training for speed and it's been a while so yeah i got to keep training for calaces

I do on occasion, mostly in the summer. However, there are all sort of nasty creepy crawlies around here and I don't go outside free pawed very often unless I know where I'm stepping, and what's there. I have been stung before in the foot from free paw, so I go the the next closest thing, sandals.

I'm free pawed 99.9% of the year. In the hottest of summers I remember frying an egg on the hood of my car just to see if I could. I stood there free pawed while it fried. We can get up to 4 foot of snow here too, and I walk in that free pawed too. Of course I'm not much of a winter fur. So I tend to stay in most of the winter, but I'm still free pawed in the house. I only have 1 pair of shoes.... sandals. And I only have those because there's still a few stores I can't go without them.
I can walk across goat head thorns and broken glass without getting hurt. Haven't had a run in with tacks or nails yet tho. I don't have callouses, just very leathery pads.
Oh, I can open doors and pick stuff up with my paws. And I just love the feel of soft squishy mud between my toes! (: :)

I go free paw whenever I can in the spring and also in the summer time. I barely go free paw in the fall but I can't go free pawed in the winter cuz of the fricken snow. But I'd love to go free as much as possible.

Must be weird for saying this, but I hate people's feet and never go without shoes. I'm not a big fan of paws neither, but that comes from this one time when my rabbit put his paw in my mouth while I was sleeping. >:(

When I can be barefoot I am. If I have to have foot covering I try with sandals. Anytime it's above 50 degrees and there is more dry space then snow I'll be in sandals.
Shoes if I have too but... I don't like it.

When I was a kid, I went barefoot whenever possible. Especially during the summer. My feet would get so tough I could walk on broken glass. Even now I wear shoes as little as possible but I'll never, ever leave the house barepaw.

Ever since I was very young, I've abhorred shoes - I always go barefoot, whenever I can. If I could, I would never wear shoes. I have very tough skin on my feet, that can stand up to things that would normally make someone yell "OUCH!" (like walking over sharp gravel, or stepping on broken glass!). Shoes, to me, are a neccessity for humanity and our soft, tender feets, but for someone like me, shoes are for the no.

I'm actually curious about another question now. It's obvious that a lot of us free paw, but why exactly do you all do it? Does it come naturally or did you train yourself into it?

for me ive always just loved walking barefott, but as for having strong feet you fo have to work yourself into that.

I always wear socks in the house (my feet get cold) and shoes outside, but whenever I go into the office of the newspaper I freelance for, everyone is barefoot (including the head editor). Everyone except me, of course :). Maybe they're all secretly "free paw" furries! (:

Must be weird for saying this, but I hate people's feet and never go without shoes. I'm not a big fan of paws neither, but that comes from this one time when my rabbit put his paw in my mouth while I was sleeping. >:(
Well I might have to change that post... Right now as i'm typing this up, I peeled off my Chucks and my socks and am barefoot, I just came from outside and was walking around in the somewhat wet grass (It was just raining). I thought it would be feel nasty but it actually felt good, heck even the walk on the concrete porch felt good. Even though I still think other peoples feet is nasty (lots of people haven't heard of toenail clippers x_x), it felt so good I may have to go barefoot more often! :D

Dunno why, I just dont think its natural for me to wear them - Prefer sandals but they dont fit in everywhere

o ya, i've seen those, there awesome. also i would prolly make some super custom fit feet paws out of them, like super realistic ones, and attach claws to the front of the toes and make it super realistic and awesome, and since there just the way the shoes are anyways, it will be like being barepawed all the time ^^

While I do prefer to be freepaw when I'm in the house and doing other tasks within close proximity to my house (e.g. putting trash out to the curb and obtaining the day's mail), most of the time when I go out it's not exactly feasible.
On the rare occasions that I do go out, it's usually to play Pump Pro (for which I need to wear my Reeboks for maximum performance), and to get to the bowling alley I play it at I have to walk along a busy road (with lots of garbage, ditches, jagged rocks, and other nasties alongside it). So I usually end up wearing my tennis shoes when I go out (though I do switch it up on occasion when I'm not playing Pump by wearing my flip-flops, which I sometimes even take off while I'm out).

Aside from that, I’m only bare foot in my house and rarely wear slippers. I just feel naked without shoes. I dunno why, I just feel unprotected. I never try to condition my feet either. Who knows what stuff is on the ground? Did I mention that it gets up to 90 degrees here EVERYDAY?! You can walk, let’s see, about half a foot before your feet start to fry on the ground. Many people here walk barefoot, but I never really got used to it.

whenever possible...specially since i have hobbit feet, so im nearly impervious to everything sharp or pokey, and temperature of the ground hasn't ever been a problem. of course thats mainly cuz im outside alot, and when i was younger socks got on my nerves...icky feeling getting the fabric stuck between my toes kinda thing.

I prefer being barefoot as much as possible, though I've become more fond of socks and slippers when it's chillier (either in winter or air conditioning, as I've gotten older it seems I've gotten increasingly susceptible to cold.) The only shoes I've worn for years have been sandals, though I did finally pick up a pair of converse for the thoroughly unpleasant winter months.
Those glove-shoes look cool. I'd like to try on a pair.

I'm not as much as a free paw as some people but I have gone days without wearing shoes at a time. While I find shoes to be enjoyable because some soles actually replicate the sound and feel of my hoofed fursona when walking I often prefer to go barefoot and sadly in my state "No shoes, no shirt, no service"

I'm EXACTLY the opposite. I love layers and almost always wear a hoodie, knitcap, and socks at all times. Absolutely never go barefoot expect showering.
I am interesting in these "shoes" though that look like a footglove, they have a rubberized sole, but go on like toe socks, they are made for "barefoot" running. I would do that.

Ive wanted a black pair of those ever since the first Classic Five Fingers came out,but the only place that sell them over here is in Puerto Banus,that being in the rich area of the Costa del sol they charge 3 times the quoted online amount,so I never got a pair :'( :'( :'(
When they released the KSOs I wanted a pair even more.Even if I was prepared to pay the outragous price tag in Puerto Banus,they only stock the Classics and refuse to order KSOs,I know because Ive asked. :(

I would go barefoot all the time but I'm not exactly in a clean neighborhood so I have to worry about broken glass amongst other things.
That's one of the reasons I don't go free pawed. Another one is that it's still a bit of a taboo in most of the western world - people don't really take too kindly to people who lack certain parts of their clothing, and I've noticed they consider missing items below the belt to be quite rude. That leaves me feeling rather anxious if I am out of my house without socks or shoes on.
That aside, I'm not very fond of shoes. I'm also not fond of dirt, though.

The first thing I do when I get home is kick off my shoes. Whenever I go out I put on shoes but I like having my shoes off as much as possible at home, even when going outside. I think I would go freepaw more if there wasn't so much broken glass and etc. on the sidewalks where I live.
I do think it is a great idea. Unfortunately a lot of places near my house require shoes to be worn.
I always try to wear tennis shoes because they are the lightest and feel the most free. I also wear low socks. I hate high socks.

My roommate had them. He loved them. I'm not sure I would; I have a hard time handling things between my toes. I think it'd be worth trying out, though. ^_^

Free paws are fur's who prefer to go barefoot when ever possible. Some fur's actually decide to go barefoot to get closer to there fursona. It's so much nicer to actually feel where your walking.
I will always walk barefoot when ever I can.
I think of shoes like gloves for your feet I only ever use them when i need to.
I mean would you wear super hard gloves over regular glove's.
I freepaw all the time, and in fact, I DO walk through the snow barefoot a lot of the time. Though I've never thought of it as connecting to your fursona. Maybe freepawing would connect you if you put yourself into that mindset

Aha I knew it! Just all the more reason to get rid of shoes, except perhaps in extreme cold or heat. Walking around in 3 feet of snow freepaw is NOT a good idea.

I can't remember if I mentioned it before, but I wonder if anyone has ever made fursuit footpaws from those? I wonder how easy or hard it would be to cover them with fur and add claws?

from what i can tell, not to hard actually, just cover the fabric with specially cut fur patchs and leave sections of the sole open as the paw pads, as well as glue specially cut claws onto the tips of the toe rubber, should work very nicely ^.^

when you walk barefoot alot, you look where you walking, i do it when im wearing shoes its become such a habit.
also, with proper conditioning, you feet can get cut into a decent amount and cause no real damage.

I go barefoot all the time. I drive barefoot when I go long distances, and am always barefooted in my house. I like the feeling of being barefoot, and can walk over gravel, and such, and cant really feel it. I guess Im just used to it. I didnt take shoes when I went out one time, and forgot I needed gas. I pulled into the gas station and pumped the gas, and when I went into pay the guy said I couldnt be in there barefooted. I said I guess I get the gas for free if you dont want my money. He changed his mind, but wasnt happy. Im sure he thought i was wierd or something, but I really dont care.

Well this reminds me of a time where I went to my cousin's wedding. Long story short my other idiotic cousin led me through a dryer up river full of sharp rocks and no gravel what so ever. I followed him because we heard this very convincing howls in the distance and he told me they looked like coyotes (should have figured it out there). Well after the he'll of the rocks. And we see the animals my cousin just stares at me. "They're dogs!". I was about to strangle him for putting me through that just to find two girls playing with their howling dogs. Yeah...

A friend of mine has a mother with similar rules. I was walking around their house barefoot, not even thinking about it when she comes up to me and starts telling me I have to wear at least socks 'cause I could catch a cold on the tile floor.
...It was 78 degrees inside and we were in Miami. I find it unlikely :p

In the summer and on warmer days I don't wear shoes unless I absolutely must. This once ended up in me walking on a gravel path in the woods in the pouring rain (got caught unawares) and hissing "ouchie" under my breath with every step. My house doesn't have much in the way of heating, so in the cold I put socks/slippers on to keep my paws comfy. I walk around barefoot a lot, so a few times I forgot to put shoes on when I got to school and didn't understand why everybody was raising their eyebrows at me until the final bell rang and I realized why my dad had gone so well. A friend of mine likened going barefoot after wearing shoes for a while similar to taking her bra off at the end of the day, so though I can't comment on the analogy, I imagine it's accurate. Free thy paws!

I love walking barefoot, but the problem is that I have rather sensitive feet. Just today I got a foot cramp because I went from an air conditioned room to the warm ground outside :(

Blargleargle my feet are dry and cracking and even the Crocs aren't helping. Will have to bust out the Heel Balm. Barepawed is out of the question and the weather is finally awesome after two weeks of snow. *sigh*

hmm, I wouldnt say im a free paw. I usually am lasy so i wear no lace shoes (at school) and sandal (everywhere else). but I find that as long as i dont cut or hurt my feet, it is much more comfortable. At home I usually have my shoes off unless it is freezing, because i use my ffet and toes to open cupboards and things :).

I wouldn't agree more. I feel that shoes constrict motion and cause less active flexability. lol even when I play sports I go bare foot, I've never had a problem with people stepping o me before. Yes I do like bare foot so I would consider myself a free paw.

i think im a free paw! I love going barefoot anytime i can. Even to the park on the wood mulch. (even though it felt like my feet were bleeding. I ddo this more because i blame my tight shoes i wore the reason for why my toes are curved. yes their all curved bent and pushed together all because of shoes :(

Can't stand being barefoot, honestly. I always at least have socks on, and if not that, well... then slippers. The only time I'm barefoot is when I'm asleep. Mostly because I'm super paranoid that I'll step on glass, or some other sharp object if I don't have shoes on. Even swimming, I wear fancy sandals that cover most of my feet.

I usually walk around barefoot. Shoe make me feel unbalanced and constricted. I find if I'm wearing shoes, I trip over the ground a lot more. I like walk around without shoes because I can feel the ground and know exactly was going on down there. It kinda sucks if I'm walking on rocks though...

I bought these cute sandals that are made entirely of cord (cotton, I think) at the CO ren faire. They're extremely lightweight so it feels like going barefoot. I'll give anyone the company name, for when you must have shoes on.
I can't wear them at work, though. :(

If I lived in a hotter country I think I'd go 'freepawed' a bit more. I went on a school trip to Spain once, and all around the holiday site I was barepawed pretty much all the time except in the cafeteria, as the pool was just on the small hill above our chalets and we went to it frequently, and as it's Spain they don't really have much care for things like that, it's too hot :p
I think the weather we have in like the UK just really doesn't invite the sort of culture that's more liberal about being barefoot. (The US kind of inherited this I think.)
I go to the woods however in sandals nearly every chance I get, on really hot days, and take them off in some of the quieter parts (away from the more major footpaths, I don't want weird looks :D) It is pleasant, and I'm usually wearing some fairly shortish shorts as well (as it's a hot day), so I can really feel the warmth of the ground and and the wind and things, it is nice :) And afterwards it's really nice to wade through the stream to get all the dirt off. :)

same here i actually have gotten to the grocery and suddenly realized i didnt put shoes on and had to make the trip again, thus i keep a pair of season appropriat shoes in the car under my seat

I drive without shoes all the time. I was a truckdriver also, and though it was difficult to get used to at first, I drove without shoes all the time. I never got pulled over at a DOT checkpoint barefoot though. I never really thought that it might be against the law... I mean, shoes dont really help you drive.

I never put shoes on i don't own shoes only flipflops for places i have to have something on my feet, and for work oh boy those combat boots hurt, i get over it just one more way to condition my feet, no weird images but my feet are almost black i stepped on a screw once bout an inch went right through my big toe without hurting at all blood of course i tied a sock around my toe so it would stop bleeding but it worked i was kinda surprised. i'll end this here, so i guess i can say i always go bare paw.

Most of the time I am freepaw unless I am doing something that requires shoes. I like feeling the earth beneath me and I feel like can get cooler without shoes or socks on a hot day.

Yeah, I'd do the same but walking around town here, in Atlanta with no shoes is not a good idea. Lots of broken glass and garbage everywhere. Even the malls, they're so huge that there's bound to be dangerous debris all over them.

yeah i live in metro atlanta and have to keep shoes in the car, but i keep an eye out for glass, pepples dont bug me and niether do hot and cold but glass hurts alot! and cigarett butts arent anyfun to step on either!

I'm not a freepaw but the whole concept is interesting, I read the site for freepaws a while back, and its pretty cool that the human foot can adapt to walk on things as harsh as snow with enough training. Going barefoot sometimes is nice and I live in the perfect area for it, I love the feel of socks and shoes too much though so I often wear socks and shoes more often then in situations they are not needed. Going barefoot is very common in my ancestry so my feet could adapt very fast to that lifestyle and be warm if I ever gave it a good try but I would be too worried about my feet becoming rough.

I did know someone you might call a freepaw though, but he wasn't furry. Everyone in town called him Barefoot Bobby. He only wore sandals into places with a "no shirt no shoes" rule. He loved to simply walk around town and on the beach in nothing but a simple t-shirt and shorts, feeling the ground and sand beneath his feet. Even though he had millions of dollars, he settled to live in a small cottage and continued to live the simple life. In the evenings he could usually be found at the local watering hole chatting it up, barefoot of course, with the ritzy folk and usual customers he called friends. Everyone who talked to him found him to be very educated and respectful, and treated him in kind.
One day, Barefoot Bobby landed in the hospital after passing out from one of his walks (he was over 70). Everyone was shocked when he suddenly passed away. A memorial service was planned at his favorite spot for all his friends, me, and several acquaintances who have gained his wisdom. We all went "freepaw" throughout the service as Barefoot Bobby would've wanted. We toasted him with the establishment's finest Champagne, told stories of what he has done for us, usually in the form of offering insight, wisdom, and mental help, and we all said our fond goodbyes.
We miss you, Barefoot Bobby. You were a true Freepaw in my mind.

Interestingly, I went without shoes or socks for the entire school day today, because we got to dress up today and I dressed up as L. It wasn't too difficult, never hurt my feet on anything, but I probably won't do this on a regular basis.

Interestingly, over the last years, I have become more and more uncomfortable without something on my feet. Be it shoes, slippers, or just socks. Unless I am in the house, or in a real hurry, I can't stand to go without.
In the summer I am more inclined to do so, mind you. Good ol' Georgia heat helps with that [it is hot with them off, let alone one]. haha

I'm usually barefooted/freepawed at home when nobody else is around. It always feels great walking around on soft carpet without having shoes/socks on. However, my dad always hated (and still does hate) when he catches me or anyone else shoeless because, being a carpet installer, he says it usually wears out the flooring quicker due to all the oil in the soles of one's feet that continually rubs into the gnap.
On rare occasions during the summer, I might go barefoot while walking, but I don't enjoy it as much and it's kind of painful when I step on sticks or small rocks (which is one of many reasons why I usually don't)...
Edit: before I forget, I also go freepaw while walking on the treadmill every so often, and it feels pretty cool after a while of doing it.

Which again, is bad. ;3 PSUs aren't efficient at 100% load and won't last as long if constantly taxed like that. It's best to get double the wattage you'll need as it's most efficient at 50% load. Uh...topic..right...barefoot is fun? Sure. >_____> CANDY!

When I'm inside I prefer to go barefoot, sometimes with socks (which I normally "lose"). It I venture beyond the driveway though I prefer shoes. In fact the only pair of shoes I own at this time are steel-toed boots (They reduce the temptation to try stomping on my feet :P).
During the past two summers though I've worked at a BSA Camp in Minnesota. If not for the rule there stating that shoes must be worn in all areas except the beach I would probably be walking around barefoot there a lot.

Being Diabetic, with a degree of peripheral neuropathy (numbness) in my toes, i'm pretty much forbidden by doctor's orders to go barefoot. Ever. Which of course means that I do so, or at least go in my stocking feet, as much as I can get away with!

i freepaw around the house, mostly by accident. I dont outside cuz my dad works on his truck in the driveway and metal shavings are always lying around... despite how much everyone sweeps the area. A couple times I got stuff stuck in my feet, it hurt but little to no bleeding.

If I absolutely HAVE to wear shoes, I will, but never around the house or when I'm outside...As soon as I'm old enough to "make my own decisions" though *glares at my dad*, then I never, EVER want to wear shoes! :P They're all cramped and uncomfortable; unless they're Heelies! I prefer to walk around barefooted, even outside on the hot pavement. When I have to wear shoes, I wear flip-flops, and avoid wearing socks and any kind of close-toed shoe at all cost. It just feels weird... and makes me feet all sweaty :goldthpt:.

Usually when I walk around barefoot, it doesn't end up too pretty.
Splinters, metal, nails, rocks, dirt and hot/cold concrete usually keep me away from this practice.
However, i do prefer freepaw inside.

Just like the European Fire Drake, I use materials as a means of protection and a seance of security.I do not leave my house without placing shoes on. I do not mind walking on rocks free pawed, but pine needles, concrete, mud, mush, and ect, are just to much for me. x_x

I find myself really resilient to weather, especially cold.
But if I can't keep my -feet- a mildly comfortable temp, the rest of me follows suit.
I heard a long time ago you lose most of your heat through your head and feet.
In my experience I found this very true, at least in the sense that beanies and foot coverings have always gone the furthest in keeping me warm or making me uncomfortably hot/cold.

I like to walk barefoot, but I don't really do it that often. I wish I could remember to take my shoes off more often, because it's so interesting to walk barefoot. You really become more aware of the surfaces under your feet, and I also found that my feet are surprisingly flexible. Plus, since I'm both rather germaphobic, freepawing was a great way to stop me from picking off all the skin on my feet. (yes, it's odd, but I had a major problem with that a couple years ago.)
And as for wearing shoes inside...I was surprised when I found out how many people do! I was taught at a young age to always take my shoes off so that the floors didn't get dirty. In fact, I don't even wear socks unless my feet get really cold.
...wow, this is getting a bit TL;DR. Fortunately I only have one question left: how do you guys manage to build up the soles of your feet? Mine aren't very thick, so even walking on gravel is very uncomfortable.

You build up that callus by pushing your limits, try walking on asphalt from time to time, when that gets more comfy try hot asphalt(not boiling, just warm), and so on and so forth

When I was a kid I would run around free paw all the time.
Now I just go short distances, to the shops and back.
When I go further I tend to wear shoes like Converse as they're light and flexible and you can still feel the ground you're walking on

I used to go around without shoes or socks on a lot when I was younger, up till when I was 16 and I dated a guy with a phobia of feet. If I am in the house or just wandering around the garden, I'll go bare pawed because it is more comfortable. I don't like wearing socks without shoes.

Oh yes, I've been going barefoot whenever I can ever since I was a pup. I particularly enjoy going for long hikes out in the woods barepawed. There's a definite feeling of freedom, getting closer to nature (and your fursona) not to mention that your paws don't get all hot and sweaty bound up in hiking boots. I'm usually amused by the reaction of other hikers I encounter on the trails. They usually raise some eyebrows but a few have stopped me and have asked about hiking barefoot. After I give a brief explanation of how and why, some of them stated they wanted to try it for themselves.
I do have to wear shoes at work and I don't go barefoot in restaurants and places of business since I don't want any unpleasant confrontations. It's no big deal to me to simply carry a pair of flip-flops in the car and slip them on when need be. Also, winter where I am is pretty harsh and while I have been known to leave a few paw prints in the snow, I can't do that for very long!

I've gone bare-pawed as long as I can remember (except for when I'm around town and stuff). I live in the middle of nowhere and it's all dirt and gravel around here. The gravel is tough to walk on in the hot summer months, but I usually don't mind too much.

Yes I'm a free Paw. I hate shoes. I only wear them when I absolutely have to. And I absolutely LOATHE socks. They make my feet itch something fierce. I NEVER wear socks. Not even in winter. I don't even own a pair. Well unless you count my over a decade old Simpsons slipper socks. They don't bother me so much and on the rare occasions my feet get cold I wear them. I think the reason they're so comfortable when other socks do not is that they've been thoroughly worn in over the years. If they ever give out I'll probably just deal with those cold foot moments sockless.

Admittedly, I never go barefooted outside. I must have taken hundreds of road trips as a child, and I loved them all. I'm very much at home on the road. It's just that the worst part was stepping out shoeless on the hot Florida asphalt after waking up at a rest area. If that wasn't bad enough, we had the red ants down there... Ever since then, I've had a sort of phobia of going outside barefoot. I don't even walk in my grassy yard barefoot--and I keep it watered!
Although for some reason, I love driving barefooted. The accelerator requires a gentle touch, and depressing a clutch feels very raw and visceral. It's as though the vehicle has become an extension of the one driving it....... Did I mention I'm a car fanatic? Gasoline flows through my veins. My fursona is also an avid driver of those hyooman automobile thingies! :)

I'm with you on the driving Sunny. I can't drive with shoes on. Hate it. I can't feel how hard I'm pressing on the pedals. The last time I drove with shoes on (my mum told me I should try), I hit the brake too hard and nearly had someone go into the back of me. So now I don't even try with shoes, for safety's sake.

My feet have a pretty thick callus at this-point. The only place i don't really go barefoot is in to work, or in restaurants and stores. I even went into class barefoot the other day, which no one seemed to mind, or even notice. I prefer driving barefoot too, as i feel almost like i have more control.
For going into stores i have vibrams.
I started walking everywhere barefoot when i developed plantar fasciitis in both feet during search and rescue training. It was pretty severe. 5 months of physical therapy and electrical stimulation didn't heal it, and the doctor told me that i would need to get surgery to have part of the tendon cut out, and that i'd likely never run again.
So instead, i completely ignored the surgeon, and i started walking barefoot, which, oddly, uses very different muscles than walking or running with shoes, and now i can run. ^_^

I like going barefoot around the house, or at places like the beach. I used to like walking barefoot in general outside, but now I'm a bit more paranoid about stepping on sharp trash and debris or getting splinters. I love "walking digitigrade" though. I walk on tip-toe sometimes around the house, or even at work when no one's around to see. It's also good practice since I have tip-toe style digitigrade feet for my fursuit.
In my years of walking barefoot, I've accidentally stepped on thorns, broken glass, bits of wire and once on a drawing pin. Thorns are relatively painless compared to stepping on nasty man made objects.
I would happily walk barefoot in untouched woods since I wouldn't have any threat of stepping on something man made. why must man have to create such dangerous things and then put them on the ground.
Well, it's not all man made stuff. There are some pine cones around here that will kill your feet. Gumballs from sweet gum trees aren't fun to step on either. Then there are the stinging caterpillars, scorpions, and such around here in the summer, and bare feet don't offer much protection against snake bites. My parents have encountered both rattlers and cottonmouth moccasins on their property. That said, I admit I'd take pine cones, gumballs, thorns, or even the scorpions over fish hooks, broken glass, or nails.

as a recent diabetic with peripheral neuropathy (sorry if I've posted this here before), I'm always being told "Wear your shoes, you some kinda idiot?" But I have always gone barefoot to at least some degree in the house, and outside when the weather permits (nowadays when nobody else is around, of course), so my freet have stayed at least somewhat tough. Plus, I'm sort of afraid that they'll lose their toughness if I start wearing shoes all the time, and I don't want to be vulnerable, paradoxical though that might be.

I'm a bit cold blooded, and my friends say it's because I'm skinny. any way i wish i could go barefoot all the time, I've actually walked home from school barefoot. it was a long walk, and when i got home i had to got a blister off my foot, also a piece of glass was in my heal so i got that out to. i try to pad my feet by walking barefoot in the street but when ever i do my feet turn it into dead skin and have it fall off i'm getting made at the anatomy of my feet for that, but i sapose i have to live with it

I walk free-hoof whenever possible. Lately, its just too cold, but I've never really liked socks. From the OP, I have problems with stinky feet as well. I am very warm naturally, and I wear boots because I ride a motorcycle, so my feet sweat a lot.
As to walking digitigrade, I didn't know what that was until I looked it up. I do, apparently, walk like that. My Acheles tendon never stretched out, so I do walk that way naturally. It also gives me a springboard type effect when I jump or run and sometimes looks like I'm loping.

It's funny I ended up in this thread...I've hated shoes my whole life. My parents were always angry at me for throwing my shoes off because they were worried about them getting cut. I can tolerate sandals, so when I sit down I can easily kick them off and no one says anything about it. I really can't wear tennis shoes. I'd rather walk barefoot ANYTIME than have my feet all confined. I'm glad I'm not just being a hillbilly or something. ^w^

Dang, I feel like the completely opposite of everyone. I actually prefer shoes.
I'm usually running around town and chasing friends ontop of buildings. Shoes are basically the only protection I have, and they provide pretty good grip. I'm also a little germaphobic and if my bare feet get any bit dirty I have to clean them immediately.

it is illigal to drive a car with out shoes and i have to ware steel toed boots at work, but other then that i walk about with my feet bare. there are only a few things that i worry about cutting my feet on.
oysters at the yacht club and Swarf in the shed from the lathes. other than that, nothing really hurts. glass isnt a problem, ive never been cut from conventional glass in my life (CRT screen glass isnt conventional and is VERY sharp though)
having tough feet comes in handy at times too, for example. i can barefoot water ski longer than my father because the constant burning sensation on the soles of my feet takes longer to cause pain than it does for him.
also when at the yacht club i can run into town to get lunch without bothering to change into my shoes, but i get some funny looks when i walk into the bakery with my wetsuit on (but i bet it would be worse if it was a fursuit)

As someone interested in parkour I have done a lot of walking around barefoot as it allows you to feel your environment better but I never thought of it from a furry stand point and it does feel better than having shoes on (unless your walking on roads without caluses)

One time i had a decent sized spike in my heel, found it two days later. i know it was there that whole time because the plants that grow these things are near our park and it was two days since i was there. I was barefoot and nobody else in my family went recently. So it wasn't in my house. Just like lethe, i too like parkour. Not too good at it, hit my head a few times, nasty stuff. but i hate doing it with shoes. I actually use my toes as a way to balance and grip the surfaces, ever tried that before? :D

ya that's not unheard of people who do parkour (who aren't free paws) do it barefoot to feel their surroundings better and its no biggie if your not very good yet,as they say practice makes perfect and im not very good either but if you need any insight or anything don't be afraid to ask. I know a lot about the movements of parkour but haven't been able to pull them off (which is just me saying im out of shape)

I am most of the time free paw i like to feel my surroundings when i walk. I even stepped on nails and didnt know it till much later but when im not i insist on wearing boots. I have been into parkour for some time but living where i do there are no old buildings so i am getting rusty.

I really hate steering this thread any farther than needed, but you don't need any old buildings to parkour. I do it at my local park or the skate park, or even at some stores, although they don't always like you doing that in their store. :D I don't really parkour too much, I guess you could call me an amateur parkourer. Honestly, i cant get over my fear of falling. x_x I do enjoy what you can do with parkour, but i hate falling and sometimes don't do it because of my fears, which may be why I'm not too good at it. I couln't imagine doing it in a fursuit or even just the head :o. I say a video of someone doing it in full suit, amazing he/she didn't fall!

Yeah! :) I just came back from a 2 mile walk with my dog and went it free-pawed. ;) Felt good. But going free-pawed does a good job on your ankles, cuz my feet are killing me right now! :( But it was fun, if I could go everywhere free-pawed I would. Just not nice places.

Usually I have to wear shoes in public, but I hate wearing sneakers unless I am biking (nasty incident involving me, my bike, and a pair of flipflops:-[). But otherwise I wear sandals. This summer though I am going to go barefoot unless I am forced to wear shoes. :D

Getting to be summer, which means no cold paws. Which means I can be comfortable to go free paw!
Unfortunately, now I live in a city and not out in the sticks, not many places are likely to let me in bare-pawed. I guess I can still do so when I visit back home with the folks.

I have always went bare paw my whole life. I hate shoes, they hurt my toes. Plus when you have to special order your shoes, you learn to only wear them when you have too.

I do whats known as freerunning and I'm just lighter on my paws [no pun intended] withough shoes. I would rather be barepawed than wearing shoes.

I would want to go free pawed but the areas I live in have a lot of broken glass lying around so I don't know if it would be safe to go free pawed in such an area.
Edit - I used to go digigrade all the time as a child and I still sometimes do, I just learnt how to do it from pretending to mimic what high heels would be like without wearing them, recently I've been working on getting my posture right and also doing it for longer.

Don't worry! :) All you gotta do is re-build the calluses on your feet-paws. I recommend starting on indoor flooring (if you have safe, in-tact flooring, that is. :P My living room floor looks like a demolition crew took a swing at it and stopped for a lunch break (and never came back)), and grass. Then, when you feel ready, gradually walk more on places that toughen up your calluses. Try to avoid nasty man-made objects, as thin lil' pieces of glass are hard to get out of your pawpads!

Just earlier today I was walking the dogs in the rain and my foot got soaked because of a hole in my trainers! I was wishing I had just gone bare-pawed, it probably would have been dryer.
I love to walk with no shoes or socks on and I never wear any in the house or in bed. But I haven't had much chance to go outside without footwear, I really have to start again before summer is over and it gets too cold. I can walk digitigrade fairly easy because of all the dancing I have done; I usually do it just after a shower so I leave pseudo pawprints on the floor :)

shoes are not allowed in the house, and I already walk on grass w/o shoes. its just concrete and gravel I have trouble with.

I will wear shoes if I absolutely must. I will wear socks, but only floofy warm socks, if my paws get cold. Other than that, free-paws. Now to build up the bottoms of my feet...

I definitely prefer free paw or flip flop style sandals until the snow reaches over the sides, which kinda sucks 'cause my new job requires sneakers 24/7. :P Oh well, small price to pay, and it's worth it to work there.
Ohhh, and for those of you wishing to free paw on the sly, might I offer you a piece of advice given to me once by an old hippie... Large cuffed (read bell bottom or boot cut, good thing they're back in style) over long pants keep your paws out of sight and out of mind. 8)

i tried it for the first time the other day,i walked 1.5 miles into the woods near my house to get to these giant sand dunes.
it was kinda painful x_x........but i used a creek on the way back,and my feet have a little bit of callus now....i like it :)

I normally wear socks around the house. I have a bunch of pairs of hospital socks, the soft ones with the plastic grips on the soles, and those are marvelous around the house. I also have a single pair of white and blue striped super soft socks that I LOVE... and a pair of pink and black striped ones that are just as good ^-^ those will get lots of use this winter!

My freepaw antics caught up with me. I was on a rafting trip, wearing shoes most of the time. Around camp, I went for a late night walk, full moon, enjoying the sand, warm rocks on my paws. Went to an overlook, slipped on a sharp edge, cut a chunk 1"x 2" out of the bottom of my foot! :o
Just be careful out there! The stupidest things will get ya!

Saskatchewan is too cold for me for that. I don't tolerate the cold very well and stay indoors as much as possible from late October to late April.
I have tough feet though and can actually walk around on gravel and rocks with no problem.

I love going without shoes! Soon as I get inside the house, first thing i do is take my shoes off. I couldn't stand wearing them all day. But I can't go totally barefoot, socks are a must. :( I just really like having warm feet. I do feel that walking around barefoot is more "natural" than wearing shoes. If it wasn't for all the risks (sharp things on the ground) I would just walk around in my socks everywhere. Someday I'd love to get pair of those special shoes that are basically a protective cover for your foot that allows nearly full flexibility (think toe socks but as shoes).

I can't stand shoes so I drive barefoot and never have shoes on in the house. I can't even stand socks in the house. We were also raised that you don't wear socks in the house so I slip them off at other peoples' and leave socks on. But if they are wearing shoes I'll probably leave them on since a lot of people get weirded out when you take your shoes off.

I really dislike being shoe-less unless it's inside. I like having something on my feet, generally, and I dislike the thought of getting stuff on them. Plus when I was younger I walked around outside a bit and got three small warts on my feet. So I just prefer shoes or socks. But I have double-jointed toes in my right foot, and I like grabbing stuff with them.
I actually really do hate being barefoot. I just don't like it. So no, I'm not a free paw.

The only thing a shoe really needs to do is protect against abrasions and cuts. The human foot is the product of millions of years of evolution, and doesnt need much help with it's job. Modern shoes train people to walk incorrectly, cause joint and spine damage, and deform feet. This isn't a furry issue, it's a general health issue.

I always walk bere foot in my house. I like cool feet.
The only time I were gloves is when I'm boxing or punching my punching bag. I like thick gloves for that.

I wear socks all the time cuz I like the huggy feeling on my calves. The heel is always missing though...I like it that way but outside I wear slippers. Inside its either socks or nothing. I can walk on concrete basement floors barefoot, and the floors feel warmer...I don't mind but I'd imagine it would bother others...

I can't say that i am for the most time. Just today i free pawed from school to my house... I always walk barefoot at my Grandma's farm and the pasture. Walking on the dirt road, always so rocky. I felt free.

Man I use to love going barefoot everywhere. It was great until my toes turned purple for about a month. Went to a lot of doctors then trying to find out what caused this and in the end I was diagnosed with Raynaud's Disease. Which really just means that I have poor circulation in my hands and feet and need to avoid exposure to cold. Since then I kind of need to wear socks and shoes everywhere and wear slippers around the house in winter. No big deal really just glad it wasn't anything more serious.

I really enjoy walking bare foot in my garden and playing catch with my Akita :goldhowl: . I prefer wearing some protection outside my house, since there can be glass on the pavements, sharps rocks etc.
But when I'm in the forest, I can climb and run bare footed, man I missed the times! Now when I'm young adult, my favourite forest has been destroyed for building and housing etc. :goldpissed:
So yes, I'm a free paw for most of the time.

I actually have very dextrous feet, and I used to like to keep my feet free for picking things up off the floor, among other things. Why? Because I felt very helpless without my toes free. It's like having tape bound around your fingers if you're like me.
In fact, there was a time when it kind of freaked me out to not be able to feel the ground or floor that I was standing on. It was almost surreal to me to be basically numb, where I was accustomed to having sensation. I wondered how other people could even stand it.
In the past few years, I have found an alternative to going free-paw all the time, and that's simply wearing exclusively top-siders or any loafer that I can easily slip my feet out of. Whenever I'm at a coffee shop or any public place, I'll automatically slip my feet out of my shoes and tuck my feet up under me.
Why? Because people kept giving me grief over going bare-pawed all the time. Because I'd go into places where food was being served and find out there was some rule about it regarding sanitation. It just wasn't worth it to argue.
I also realized that, in human society, they tend to leave filth on the ground, and it's actually a thousand times filthier than any forest floor. It's the equivalent of putting on a hazmat suit, the way I look at it.
But, when I'm studying at a library late at night, I leave my shoes at the station where I'm studying. I don't think anything of it. I am so comfortable with myself about it, I don't think that most people notice.
On the other hand, one thing that you have to understand is that humans have been wearing footwear of some kind for thousands of years, and we have actually adapted, to a large extent, to wearing it in our natural environment. It is almost less natural, for some people, to go without footwear. They are literally evolved to actually have a need for it.
But I do feel more like my furry self barefoot.
Or bare in general, but that's for another conversation.

I love going free paw! You can find me anytime walking around with out footwear. Yes I do it in the long winter months too! X) on my icy driveway to take the trash in! When I'm camping specifically I love walking around the wilderness free paw! :D

Most of you have said that you like to walk around outside like in the wilderness etc when you bare foot...I however am allergic to almost everything in the wilderness (grass trees golden rod etc...) and I absolutely love walking on pavement and gravel bare footed....its just a preference I guess... I also enjoy picking things up with my feet....I also find socks amazingly uncomfortable because my feet itch.....a LOT...so yeah...

I free paw when I can, but I have a pretty bad area for it. My forests are covered in broken glass, and my streets aren't much better. I do what I can though ^_^ You'll never catch me wearing socks in the house.

Once again I find myself having to bring work into things. Because of the nature of my employment I need to wear certain articles of clothing that conform to a set of rules that for lack of a better term have been righten in blood. So yeaz, when I am working I wear shoes. However; when I'm at home, no not at all. So, i used to try and wear vibrams but because my toes curl in somewhat they were extremely uncomfortable... They also look incredibly silly and are hard to wear to work. (I work at a software company)
I found these recently which are as think as vibrams, but look like boots from the top (the angle most people will see them from) and don't have individual toes.

But you can still feel every crack in the sidewalk and every tiny pebble through them.

My only shoes are tanker boots, so I wear none until it's worth putting those on. Usually I can avoid glass when out for a run/walk but I do occasionally wind up having to stop and get some out.

I had gotten to the point lately of wearing no shoes/socks around the house or yard. Then...I realized the linoleum stick-tile the kitchen and dining room are floored with was making my foot soles essentially get really bad dermatitis. Stupid linoleum...
So, wearing socks around the house again. Which is okay I guess, it is started to get too chilly for free pawing now.

I pretty much never wear shoes inside. And I only sometimes do outside, the ground outside around here gets spiky in the warmer months (and prickly sometimes) but in the cooler months I can run around outside free paw quiet easily. :)

Out of curiosity, I've tried free pawing through snow recently.
It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected, I didn't even feel the cold, my feet just stopped feeling it. After a while though, the joints in my feet started getting that felling like I just jumped off, say, a one and a half story building. Not exactly pain, (I'm adjusted to jumping from large heights) but just a sort of uncomfortable feeling. I guess snow will take some getting used to, though. Come to think of it, i'll probably come out again and see how it feels like now that I've done it before...

I drove barefoot today. It was allot easier than wearing shoes ^.^ With shoes you can't feel as much of the ground. This may however be a good thing (as shoes protect you). I once stepped on glass in the carpark to a beach in New Zealand (I live in Aus btw). The experience was not fun. It cut my foot and I was like "WHO THE HELL WOULD LEAVE GLASS AT A BEACH"
The only things that can hurt you when going barefoot is man made objects and prickly weeds/twigs
Most of the time I'm only shoeless indoors and when I go to walk to the mailbox. I really don't like shoes though! They make my feet sweat and I have to use a foot powder. Also have to wear shoes to venues that kick you out if you don't wear shoes.
However next time I go indoor rock climbing I'm going to try to do it barefoot :) Hoping that it will be allot easier to feel where the footings are.

I used to have this problem. My feet were uber cold and my toenails blue. I improved my circulation by using a Pumice stone to get rid of old skin on my feet. I recoment using this guide: http://suite101.com/a/using-a-pumice-stone-to-soften-feet-a402318 Because we have to wear this stupid thing called shoes! We get excess buildups of dead skin cells. My feet also stopped sweating a lot less. My sister is diagnosed with Raynaud's Disease and I'm not sure if I have it. But try that. It worked for me :) An alternative is not wearing shoes and going barefoot everywhere! Which I want to do :P Also running is allot more fun barefoot.

I went running barefoot in a park (It was actually the local botanical gardens) yesterday! It was amazing :3 Loved the Short cut grass. I also ran on some gravel (it wasn't sharp which was good) and to my suprise it didn't hurt.

i have stepped on glass, spiked in foot by spike weed burs, stepped on a chestnut husk walked on asphalt in the summer for a 1/4 of a mile but i like to walk bare paw anytime my parents arent looking or when the weather is nice. :goldgrin:

i always wear shoes outside (except for short trips to my back/front yard) my feet get cut easy but i can sorta pick things up with them. i also have pretty good grip with them so they are useful on slippery floors. in my house i don't wear shoes but wear socks if it's cold.

I am somewhat a free paw. Inside my house, I take off my shoes and socks. Whenever I need to go outside for a bit, I don't put on my shoes. Whenever I'm at school, I take off my shoes, until next hour comes. Whenever I'm outside for a long period of time, I wear shoes because I hate the feeling of grass under my feet.

So here is one, anyone about some free paw through the mud?. Especially a mud patch the sun has been beating down on.

Can't say I'm much of a free paw now. When I was younger I could go barefoot anywhere but now it's shoes out side, and either barefoot or socks inside depending on temp...or both since I don't really notice if they are heavily torn. Cant say it gives me a closer link to my sona though when I am bare foot, though I have found my self throughout the years trying to walk on my toes and my sonas are generally digitigrade.

The other day, I went (in the snow) to see my chickens freepawed, it was cool (in both meanings! Especially cold
*burrrrrrrr*!)
It was a freeing experience!

I walk bare pawed on gravel (my house is surrounded by it) all t (:he time. And now my feet are really tough.
