You watch as the wise fox places numbered cards into the table. He places them upon a circle divided into eight sections. You see him place them the 1, then the 2, then the 3... until he has the arangement show below. You expect him to place the 8 in the empty space but instead he places it with the 7:



The question is, if he continues with the same pattern, where will he place the 9 and what number will he finally place in the empty space?
