I personally have only completely started a new fursona once, but many furries have buckets of characters! There really does not seem to be a right or wrong way to do it.

It all depends on your interests. If you want a character to identify with and relate to though, that can take a lot of thinking and feeling. Maybe study and try to find a totem animal you relate to, or discover your zodiac. Apply your favorite colors and their qualities!

It sometimes can take a lot of thought to find a character to relate to though. Good luck in your search!
You can do anything, if you try.

Well, I can sorta cheat because...

An azarian physical form is merely any body designed by azarians for use by azarians (for use as a physical form)
To cut down on having to have lots of spare bodies to let everyone change around, I decided to implement biologically feasable shapeshifting (between pre-programmed forms). although its impossible to do it at the rate I change around on IRC, because it would actually have a turnaround time from weeks to months, that is one way I can bypass. However, going back to the definition, it is important because technically the azarian physical forms come in versions, as they are constantly being revised, however, this does not change the fact that it is still an azarian body, and I'm still an azarian (Defined as a type of mind).

I've had a snow leopard fursona since I first started identifying myself as being a furry, so about three years now. I've never felt the real want to have a different fursona, although she has gone through a few small changes (she had wings at one point, and was a Borg for about a year).

I haven't changed my fursona since I registered here at Furtopia nearly 8 years ago. I've always been a husky. :) I may have started out as the classic black and white husky (Or maybe it was blue and white?), but I finally switched to green and white in 2005 and have been that way ever since.

Lilith, dont fret over your fursona.  My time here has been short and already my fursona is evolving and changing.  As you know I allow him to take other forms when I'm board that allow me to explore other aspects of personality and capabilities.  I also have many other characters that I use from time to time from my stories and others stories.  As far as I know there is no rules on fursona stability or longevity so have fun.  You have left me with a problem tough. My current pic shows your non-zomby version so it is behind the times.  Oh Well. Just have fun with them.

In my case,
My fursona has never changed,
It’s something that defines me (or perhaps who I was), rather than myself defining it.

Though what I refer to as my fursona, is something that I’ve identified with, long before my knowledge of the furry fandom.
The fandom simply provides a convenient definition for me to use, (i.e. fursona.)
And that works for me.

Things like a totem, or a spirit is not a proper definition for me, and to say my memory, doesn’t sound right either, so I just go with fursona.
It’s the other me, my other self from long, long ago.

Not, that I wouldn’t also be a furry otherwise, but it all works well together.

- - - - -

However, if your fursona is something of your own choice rather than a deeper connection,
You should remember that the aesthetics of your fursona do not necessarily need to have a bearing on your personality.

Go with what you want, and define the personality / fursonality by what you are, or what you want to be.

For example, owls don’t have to be wise, foxes don’t have to be cunning, dragons don’t have to be ferocious, and wolves don’t have to be noble.
A given species does not need to conform to a specific profile, it can be whatever you want.

So while there's absolutely no reason that you can't, there's also no reason you need to change your whole fursona each time you feel different. (:

(does that make sense? sometimes I feel like I'm bad at wording things.)

I started with a wolf and became a Shroud. A minor shapeshifter but i still remained a wolf at heart. I simply added some characteristics of others to myself. Though for a while i've been wanting to change up some things but alas i lack the monies to commission an artist to draw the new details.

I am so settled, that compared to a man settled at the bottom of a river by concrete, does not compare to me.

I will not change my position or fursona for at least another 4-5 years.
Next time, I'll collect the money, and you can die!

Only if you want to, because it's entirely up to you.

While some of us may joke around, trying to convince others into having a certain fursona, it's really just all in good fun,
No one can really decide for anyone else, that is unless they specifically ask, the general rule is that there are no rules.

Some believe they have guardian spirits, a totem which consist of several animal spirits which guide them, or several animal traits which represent themselves.
Then there are those who believe they are guided by a single spirit, and some believe their spirit is a representation of what they were, or are.
Some simply choose an animal that they would like to be, while others go with what’s popular, or nice looking.
And for some it’s nothing more than an online avatar.
There are people who take from one idea, and others who take from several.

But at the end of the day, a fursona can be anything you want.
It can be something meaningful, or just for fun, a fursona doesn’t necessarily have to be a deep connection, but it certainly can, or even be a combination,
Such as a fursona that is nothing more than a fun creation, with traits of something deeper, or vice versa.

I know that I’m probably not helping much, (:
But I guess what I’m trying to say is that a fursona can be anything, there aren’t really any rules, other than those we make for ourselves.
So just go with what feels right, if you can't find something that's right for you, then try to find something that, in your mind, is at least not wrong.

In other words, if you can't find a fursona that makes you happy, then go with something that at least makes you content.

I may have changed Fursonas once or twice but I always go back to being a dog. I was meant to be a dog. The only difference is now I'm a ROBOTIC dog/
You humans need to refine, alter, corral codify and measure things yes? Very well. I shall use your wristwatch to count out ten of your seconds. I suggest you use that time to run. For at the end of it I shall come for you and I will catch you and we shall measure the duration of your death... In screams.

You could call me unsettled, even though I've had the same character pretty much since I joined in all this madness.

I've contemplated a change for quite some time at this point, but never get around to coming up with a good concept. I'll probably change to some sort of husky, because I do feel like my personality matches up with it better.

For me, my fursona is just an extension of myself. He's not much different than I am, personality-wise. And I don't come up with any drawn-out backstory or anything. Because he's just me, and I already have my own backstory: my life.

With this kind of thought behind it, I don't feel particularly drawn or attached to a certain species. It pretty much just comes down to the actual design of the character. The reason I would pick a husky over a fox, as I said, is because I feel my personality fits it better.

Why haven't I switched? Mostly because I'm not so great at coming up with a good design on my own. I'm thinking that I might see if I can find an artist willing to work with me on creating something cool (not even sure if many artists would be willing to do this... if anybody knows of an artist who might work with me on this, let me know). But this'll have to wait a month or so, because my new computer purchase has eaten up all my spare funds for this month.

Personally, I've always had a kitsune as a fursona because I've always had a love for, connection to, and fascination with foxes (red foxes in particular I feel strongly connected to, but foxes in general really).

A lot about hir has changed over the years, from the amount of tails to the clothes shi wears/doesn't wear, to hir height/weight, to even hir gender... but one thing has stayed a constant and that would be her species (and name, but eh... :p).

So maybe it would help you to find an animal you find a similar kinship with and go from there? ^^ Or you could try having more than one character (with maybe one being your 'main' fursona), seen some furs do that too.

Don't tell Liedt. but  I was a bull moose before I new what furry was. Even built a crude partial suit,  made up without any tutorial help. Antlers scraped the ceiling when indoors. Vision was limited but the head was big enough for a fan, if desired. I was a hit with the Chippewa tribe at the local casino during the Halloween bash there.
It's just easier being a coyote. It's a better fit for my activities and experiences.
"The coyote is a living, breathing allegory of Want. He is always hungry. He is always poor, out of luck, and friendless. The meanest creatures despise him. And even the fleas would dessert him for a velocipide."~Mark Twain

I'm a Cat. Always have been, probably always will be.

For some reason, I thought I was something else early on. I couldn't tell what, or why. I just thought I was something else. Then I realized that yes, I am a Cat, and I have continued to be one since :D
