MLP as part of Furry Fandom?

Taking a cue from this thread here:
http://forums.furtopia.org/index.php?topic=45835.0
.........Should MLP be considered as a part of the furry fandom? If so, then why? If not, then why not?

Ponies are animals.  The characters in MLP:FIM are ponies.  The characters preform a myriad of human tasks through the entire show in every single episode ranging from wearing clothes and talking to preforming complex tasks like medical work and sewing.  They are definitely anthropomorphic.

They are animals.  They are anthropomorphic.

Why is this so complicated?  x.x

It's not like we're saying that everyone who likes MLP is a furry,  or that every furry has to love MLP. Of course not.  But, it has become apart of Fandom culture now in the same way (and perhaps to even a greater extent) as characters like bugs bunny and wile e. coyote.

I'm kind of in the "Why does it matter?" bandwagon.  If you want to be associated with furry, then call yourself a furry.  If not, then don't.  If you need to categorize something outside of what you like, use the one that fits most.  Like Alsek said, it's a matter of characteristics that match.  Simple.

But the way I see it, if you don't want to be a furry, then you are the only one making that choice.

All in favour of commandeering the undecided option in the name of "Who cares?" Team Apathy go! :D

But yeah, It has anthropomorphized animals, but I don't think "Eeee, talking ponies!" is the reason most of them watch it. If it were, it wouldn't be a new thing with this particular series. I think they're separate but with a lot of overlap. Enough overlap for some furry forums to have dedicated MLP boards. A hell of a lot of overlap. Enough overlap that it really doesn't matter whether you want to define them as separate or one as part of the other. :p

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh maybe.

I'm on the fence about this one, as I am a MLP collector. I would say that the ponies from the cartoons and movie are anthropomorphic, but the actual toys may or may not be. It depends on who is playing with the toys, imho. Some will just see the toys as multicolored real ponies (more like animals), others as anthros, and still others as just toys. So meh.

Like the honey badger I just don't care... :P

Taken directly from the MLP Wikipedia article.

Quote
"My Little Pony is an entertainment franchise developed by Hasbro......"

An entertainment franchise is defined as the following:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_franchise

MLP is divided in "Generations". MLP:FiM is known as Generation Four. According to the main MLP Wiki article:

Quote
The My Little Pony "generations" refer to toy lines, as classified by collectors. Their accompanying animated features fall into these generations by date.

I think of  the Brony fandom are furries in denial.  It not just  the ponies are anthropomorphic, but the same  demographic and mannerism  (drama). Sometime ago I sat next to a brony meet at the mall food court. My first impression was "why wasn't I told there was a fur meet today?"

My distaste of the bony fandom is the  lack of knowledgement of younger fans.  They think MLP is only for adult men and act like a teen having a hissy fit when mommy forces them to take Junior with them. The demographics ratings  speak  for themselves the largest group  of viewers are the 2-11 year old.  This "yucky kids not allowed" attitude  is a one of things that turns me off from the brony fandom. If it was not for the younger views , Hasbro would pulled the plug a long time ago.  the second is usual fandom based on what other created; the type  who raise cain if the producers change one character: ditto Star Wars and Trekies.

I don't think of MLP as furry.
Now FIM which spawned the Bronies I can consider furry.

i find they are scarily similar and IMO are a focused BRANCH of our fandom....but i sure wont include them if they dont want to.

At my first convention, Kage, Paul Kidd and 2 Griffon summed up the following:

Sci-fi = Purists
Anime = {nasty things that cannot be said} (because the anime representative was not there...)
Furries = Focused Sci-Fi fans
Bronies = Focused furries.

when you look at it like this it makes sense but the bronies i know wont have a bar of it  (:

that's ok with me, i have fun with both and i still dont affiliate with 'brony'

I like MLP, I am not furry. I have no interest in the anthropomorphicness of the small horses. If the ponies were people I'd probably still like the show. So I'm on the no, let them be separate from furry side. They're fans of a show for more reasons than the anthropomorphised creatures in it.

Just because I like shows and other things with anthropomorphic characters, does not mean I am furry. Because that's not what makes me like said shows and other things.

There's clearly an overlap, as demonstrated by this sub-forum.  Based on my own anecdotal sense of how many of the furries I know are also significantly into the latest incarnation of My Little Pony, I have to suspect it's a fairly large overlap.

Well, MLP fans aren't necessarily furries, and just as well furries aren't necessarily MLP fans. Bronies might just like mlp, but not like anything else that could be considered "furry". Most bronies, from what I remember about a brony poll, don't identify as bronies.
That said, MLP is a show about talking animals with some human characteristics.
As such, it can be said to be part of the furry fandom.
Just don't expect all bronies to be furries or the opposite.
Yo.

Then same could be said about the Otaku fandom and Furry fandom ... they over lap massively... yet there considered two distantly different fandoms

I think we're talking about different things....

No one  was claiming that MLP and furry were the same thing.  I think the question was whether or not MLP:FIM was apart of the furry fandom.

Just because someone likes bugs bunny and daffy duck doesn't make them a furry.  But bugs bunny and daffy duck are certainly a part of furry culture.  Same goes for MLP.

I would consider Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck furries before MLP, call me a traditionalist oh well :P  Physiologically they just don't register as Anthros to me... Because even though I know not ever furry is like this, the over whelming majority of them have a lot more human traits. Standing on 2 legs, etc.

However to be fair:
I'm biased as I didn't like the show, and the fandom ruined it beyond the point of a "whatever floats your boat it's not my cup of tea" mindset. I've also only seen the first two episodes of FiM, and only watched that much because it was a bet.

yes it should. first off, they are animals. second, they walk and talk and act like human. real horses don't have the problems that these ones do. also, there are unicorns, pegisi, and alicorns. those aren't real. also with the fact that they act like humans, that's anthropomorphic. furries are people who like to make anthropomorphic animals. so yes, My Little Pony is apart of the furry fandom.

My little pony is made for children not adults or Teens so my little pony is not really a furry thing just saying

The logic doesn't add up there are a lot of  media design for children but furries are fans. and many furries are children  (that is to say furry are only for adults)

Perhaps MLP fans are a subset  of furry fandom in way star wars fans are a subset of SF fandom like how Star wars  fan do not consider themselves  SF fans and some SF  fans feel Star Wars fans are not SF fans.

Actually, that comparison seems quite apt.

what im trying to say is MLP IS MADE FOR CHILDREN YOU FEEL ME?? SEE AND FOR ADULTS TO WATCH IS KINDA EH >:(

This is judgmental, poorly written, and off-topic.  If you wish to discuss why some adults enjoy a show made for children, start a different thread, turn off your CAPS LOCK, and start posing questions instead of hurling judgements.  If your wish is to make judgements about people who watch shows that you don't personally care for, then you should probably rethink how you've decided to spend your time and energy.
