Is it really worth it?
« on: October 17, 2013, 10:41:14 pm »
A long time friend of mine, I've been debating telling him that I'm a furry. He's heard the term "furry" before, which where he heard that from brings up a whole other story. But that's not what I'm wondering. Is it really worth it to bother to tell him I'm a furry? Plus, another thing is that when he first heard the term, I tried to save him from the dreaded google search :P, we all know how that ends. But I texted him, if you wanted to bother to know what a furry was, go to this website. And I gave him a link to the what is a furry page on the anthrocon.org website. I honestly don't know if he ever checked the link, nor did I really care at that time. But I can tell, he suspects something interesting, maybe due to my Skype name, or email address, or profile pic, or a lot of other things. Anybody have any recommendations?

It kinda depends on what you want to do. If you really want to say something outright, then you can. Granted, I feel it's best to just not make a huge deal out of it, because if you don't make a big deal out of it, they're less likely to think it's a big deal.

But in your case, it seems like you've made it about as blatantly obvious without flatly saying it. You've even linked him to a furcon website.

I'm going to guess that in this case, he knows already (or is at least suspicious).

well heres my story if it helps you. ill give my opinion at the end but you can base yours on what you so on my story if you so Desire.

i told my best friend I'm a furry in robotics club at the same time as a brony did who was on the same team ( the club is divided into teams of 2-4). i had told him before but vaguely so he didn't remember so this is the first he finally really " knew". he was surprised and i was surprised he didn't know considering id shown him this forum, 2 gryphon, and he had seen my ipod background ( same as avatar). and now robotics is full of funny furry/brony/gay jokes ( the brony acts very gay but is not). which i look forward to. it brings even more variety to the jokes and fun in the club ( it was just dirty jokes but now it is dirty/furry, etc and a mix of them). now we are a loud group ( in the club but not elsewhere) so now the entire club of around 20 people know i am one. they don't care so no negative effect. and recently another friend found out as well. now in both cases they knew the false definition. i simply explained that it was wrong. showed an example and all's good. and now despite not being a furry my friend wants a " Bryon Bison" picture. he thinks that the concept if it is really cool, despite not being one, and hat having furry pics doent make you one. he jokingly said that my ipod was full of furry porn so i gave him my ipod ( he knows the code) then he and the brony proceeded to go through the furry pics i have on it inspecting each pic for a "porniness" to it. they didnt finish but it only helped my case ( there was none).

so all in all only good has come of it in my experience. if you know them well, id say go for it.

MY story is rather interesting, I was going to dinner with my 2 best friends. It was a birthday dinner for one of them. So we got a talking and me and the birthday friend started talking about conventions like Comicon and such. He then went to talking about Anthrocon! This was a red flag for me. So he ended up getting interested in furries about the same time I did, but I didn't know it all this time! So the other friend just jokes about it a little, nothing rude, but he still respects that we like it. So I would say your doing good so far just let little bits out at a time and don't go "OMG! Furries are sooooo cooool!!" I'm sure you wouldn't do that though. Anywho good luck with everything :D

well you can just wait for him to ask if you are a furry. that's kinda what im doing with a few people at school. all my usernames are GrayWolf448 and most have the same profile picture. still find it funny how our names are just off by one digit ^^

and what is wrong with using Google? it's clean as long as you don't click images :P . Google is actually how i found the fandom. apparently my brother was a furry and he said that what i heard from "1000 ways to die" was not true so i asked him "what is a furry then?" and he said i was too immature to know what a furry is. i truly don't understand what he meant by being too immature. so ya back to what i was saying, when i first searched it up found the wiki article read it then i clicked on images and then.... you know the rest. but the wiki article is pretty good at explaining what a furry is.

I'm going to guess that in this case, he knows already (or is at least suspicious).

To say the least, he probably forgot. Because way back when, I sent him that link, which was probably sometime in april-june maybe(he still has the link. He let me go through his messages, and he never deletes them, so you can imagine what fun I had going through a year and a half's worth of text messages  :P), and he still had the link, so I honestly don't know whether he felt like checking it.

i told my best friend I'm a furry in robotics club at the same time as a brony did who was on the same team ( the club is divided into teams of 2-4). i had told him before but vaguely so he didn't remember so this is the first he finally really " knew". he was surprised and i was surprised he didn't know considering id shown him this forum, 2 gryphon, and he had seen my ipod background ( same as avatar). and now robotics is full of funny furry/brony/gay jokes ( the brony acts very gay but is not). which i look forward to. it brings even more variety to the jokes and fun in the club ( it was just dirty jokes but now it is dirty/furry, etc and a mix of them). now we are a loud group ( in the club but not elsewhere) so now the entire club of around 20 people know i am one. they don't care so no negative effect. and recently another friend found out as well. now in both cases they knew the false definition. i simply explained that it was wrong. showed an example and all's good. and now despite not being a furry my friend wants a " Bryon Bison" picture. he thinks that the concept if it is really cool, despite not being one, and hat having furry pics doent make you one. he jokingly said that my ipod was full of furry porn so i gave him my ipod ( he knows the code) then he and the brony proceeded to go through the furry pics i have on it inspecting each pic for a "porniness" to it. they didnt finish but it only helped my case ( there was none).

Man, robotics is the place to be  :). One our teams mentors last build season, he sorta came out as a brony. But other friends of mine, sometimes go through my pictures(I'm very selective of what I save pictures of, you never know who will decide to go through them or when <.<). But my background is my current avatar, which I have a tendency of changing somewhat frequently, so I always change my phone background when I change my avatar.

So I would say your doing good so far just let little bits out at a time and don't go "OMG! Furries are sooooo cooool!!" I'm sure you wouldn't do that though

If I did that, I'd probably lose my sanity instantly  x_x, but thanks for the advice  :)

The wiki article is decent at explaining it, but when I was going through messages from the day I had told him about the fandom, the conversation was exactly as quoted

Quote
me: ...Have you ever heard the term furry before?

a few minutes later

him: Nope, ill just google search it later

instant reply (:

me: Don't google search it, trust me. If you want to know what a furry is, go to this website anthrocon.org

him: Ok
I said it like ten times or somethin, I don't know if he clicked the link. I kinda wanted him to but idk.

Oh, sorry for the big wall of text  :-[

Well, I told him. But he understood none of it. Maybe because its almost 11 at night, and I chose to text him rather than tell him in person. Then he asked me if we could just talk about it in person. And then I felt really stupid :-[

indeed tell him in person. and wanna know something funny. i had shown all my friends 2 gryphon like 2 weeks before they knew i was a furry. and they didnt know he was one either. they all love him and me & my friend quote him a lot, so latter i told him he was a furry because i shows him a vid of him a a con ( id only shown his rants not videos of him in a con) he asked why he was making fun of the furries. so i told him that he is one. then later when i told him im a furry. i hope it help to elevate the strangeness because then he knew that there are people that he liked were furry so it would not be as strange when i told him.
