The book was called (I think) The Mammal Detective (or something) and it contains lots of info on tracking British mammals by their footprints, homes and.....poop smells!!  
He was saying that if you find what you think is an otter poop, use a plastic bag or some such to lift it...and have a sniff!!!  
He also describes and illustrates what each animal's poop looks like and what it is likely to contain. Eg. fish bones and skulls etc in an otters poop. (does that make any sense? )
