Title: Writing Group Anyone?
Post by: Jet on March 04, 2012, 08:30:35 pm
Alright, I'm writing a novel. It doesn't really have much to do with furries, except that there are a lot of animals and the main character seems to connect immediately to all animals. The problem I have is... I NEED a writing group.

Nothing fancy, just a few people that can get together every so often and exchange stories. My book is a war novel set in a future war for survival. the thing is, the main character loses her family and all her friends to this war, and i'd like an outside opinion on whether i portrayed the deaths and reactions believably. I'm going to ask my friends, but i could use someone with a similar passion for storytelling.

I could make a dropbox if someone is willing to assist. I would just like to get some feedback on the mood and stuff. I'd be glad to help anyone else with any of their problems. I'm not a pro by any means, but at least i have a desire to tell a good story and can tell some of the signs of an unconvincing one.

Anyone want to tag along? ;)

Great. I think the easiest way to do this is to use a dropbox, but we can also e-mail each other the stories and e-mail back some critiques and thoughts. So far i have about 40 pages done, so it's a relatively big file :o... I could just send parts that i need more help with than others if that would be better. In any case, what would you guys like to do - Dropbox, E-mail, or some other method?

Hey glad to have you aboard.

If you mean what the writing group is about:
I dont know... we're just a couple of furries getting together to bounce writing ideas off each other and get some constructive criticism on our work

If you mean what my story is about:
Warning - It's not a furry novel. Although i will start a full on furry novel when im done with this one, Im SO excited. Also, being a war novel, it's a little... bloody, to say the least.

Back Story
:   In 2924 The United States has entered its sixth bankruptcy. The government was abolished and the land was divided up to the four super powers of the time, Germany, Japan, China, and Mexico. Once they got their land, they fought an endless war for the other country's lands. Russia enters the war when China invades Russia in an attempt to capture their land and gain war money. Soon after, China surrenders to Russia. Japan takes over China and has secretly enlisted their military power under the Japanese flag. The armies used former U.S. civilians as dummies to test their war weapons on. Russia felt this was "immoral" so they started saving civilians and are now more or less fighting for the better of the former U.S. Other than that it's a bloody free-for-all between five countries with civilians scattered in the mix fighting for survival.

My Story: My story starts up with a fifteen year old girl named Sam in the year 3021. They are in Southern Nevada, currently controlled by Mexico. This area has suffered multiple contaminations by the nuclear and war testing. So much so that several creatures have sprung up that aren't "normal." She, her father, a genius named Shaun, a newcomer named Marc, an excellent sniper named Grant, and her german shepherd war dog Liberty are a band of survivors fighting to stay alive. Her mother died years ago, during a German bombing run. Her brother ran off to fight with the Russian resistance. Her father and Grant die very early on, she assume it was the Mexicans that ambushed them. Marc tells them that her father, who was also their leader, planned to move north toward the Northern Russian Territories. They don't know why, but they don't question it. Along the way, they meet another group of survivors moving north and join up together. Anthony, their leader. John, Anthony's childhood friend. Jessica, an overlyexcited women who enjoys war and bloodshed. Kevin, Jessica's boyfriend as well as for seemingly no reason despises Sam. And Matt, a fourteen year old kid who loves the main character from first sight, but Sam is extremely annoyed by him and his affection.

Throughout the course of the novel, everyone dies but Marc, Shaun, Sam, Matt, and Liberty. Then Sam walks in on Marc cutting Shaun's neck. There she finds out that Marc is a U.S. civilian working for the German government as an undercover Russian. While spying on the Russians, a russian operator hired him to kill Sam's father and all known associated. Unknown to Sam until the end, her dad was a secret underground resistance fighter and sabotaged the armies several times. They found out who he was and went after him. Marc was supposed to kill Sam, but got too close to her and wouldn't do it. this proves fatal, because she goes after him and kills his.

I know this is long, but i didn't even hit all the points, unfortunately. My story is a complicated mess with a lot of characters and turns. I had to make a lot of people because i was killing them off. the first half of the story is moving north and fighting against savage animals and the occasional small group of soldiers. The second half (after Marc kills Shaun) is more focused on Sam's blind rage agianst Marc and desire to kill him, which costs her Liberty's life. Like I said, i have forty pages done and they just met the second group of people. I was inspired to do another war novel on Anthros vs Humans. I think it's a bad idea to undertake two novels at once, so i'm just jotting down the ideas and focusing all my free time on writing the first novel, which will end in a cliffhanger as to provide room for a sequel.

Ya I know, and I wish I could say more, but I can blabber on for hours about the story. the relationships of the characters, especially between Sam and Matt and Sam and Marc, are half the story itself. Also the death of Sam's father, nightmares of her brother and mother, her best friend and confidant Marc betraying her, and her dog dying pushes her over the limits of her mental strengths. In fact, two weeks are spent in a cave, depressed and wanting to just end it all. But Matt stays by her side and keeps her alive, even stopping her suicide a few times. Eventually, with the help of Matt and some of the creatures she met along the way, her hatred for Marc is revived and she hunts him down. Even the creatures are a whole story in itself.

Now, I need to know what the best way to get together and share stories would be. It has to be something we all can do. I don't think it would be a good idea to just post our stories in this thread. (:

Hmmm... my email is really REALLY full! (like 1965 or something... *looks around like that's not a high number*) But I can still use it, and I skim through it from time to time, trying to empty it.  I could get and read it on word or something like that. What did you use to type it? And would it be compatible to microsoft word?

About the e=mail thing, we can create new e-mails speciically for sharing the stories, if necessary. And I used Microsoft Word 2010. I'm pretty sure its compatible with all other forms of Word, but I'm not sure. I started the files on Word 2003, because that's what my old computer had. :o Then when I got my new one, I converted them into Word 2010. So I know that 2010 is backwards compatible. Not sure about forwards compatible, though... :) When we get consent from all the members of our would be writing group. We should probably personal message the e-mails to people, you know?

my novel's up to about 35,000 words. So i think it would be best if we sent them through e-mail. We all should PM each other our e-mails, if we are all in...

I don't know if you guys already did this, but you can send your stories to each other through E-mail, too. Also, for those who are reading my story. The highlights are just for me to remember some parts that I've currently changed. Also, I've recently decided to scratch all the stuff talking about ice-cream and stuff. I feel it makes the past seem like a safe haven that was a million times better than the present. Although the past was better, they were still at war, and the people were still fighting for survival, but back then the survivors were more collected, rather than scattered as they are now. I'll change all that later, but disregard all that ice-cream stuff! :)

I might be interested in joining - I'm on the fence considering how little I've written as of recent though. I do believe it is a very good idea though, and one that could only improve everyone's writing talents if it is taken in all seriousness and people take the time to offer good advice to everyone else who participates.

Yes, we will give good advise and help each other out. Hopefully everyone will criticize the work fairly, but at the same time harshly. It doesn't really do anyone good if everyone tells them their work is perfect, there is always room to improve. Anyone that you guys feel comfortable reading your stories, or want to read their, just send them a PM with your E-mail and ask if they would like to share, or read your work. I've already read I think three people's stories. Great stuff so far, but it seems that we all are just beginning to write stories. Maybe these aren't your first stories, but the stories I received were just the start of something great. Keep it up guys.

Is it too late to join?
Title: Re: Writing Group Anyone?
Post by: Jet on April 14, 2012, 02:13:38 pm
No way. I'm kind of surprised someone is trying to join this late into me posting this, but ya you can join. Just send your e-mail to me or anyone else in the group so they can send you their story if they wish, then you reply with your story. Or, of course, you could do it the other way around, and send a PM requesting their e-mail to send your story to. Sorry I can't send my story just yet, but I am editing the thing severely. I really want to get the right feel in it, which has been lost by some of the flashbacks. 53 pages is a lot for me to read through and re-write certain parts. I'm a slow reader. :P But I will accept anything you have to throw at me.

No problem. Just send a PM or E-mail to the members of the group above and ask them for help or ask if you can see their works. I have started posting my novel up by chapter on my FA, so I could direct you that way if you send me a PM. I'm sure anyone else in the group would be more than happy to let you read their stuff, or read your stuff for you if you have something you would like editing.

Cool- and I know the feeling of reading through stuff and or editing- To an extent I guess. I've started and restarted more times than I can count. Heh. Such minor things can irk me so much I have to restart... Anyways- if anyone else wants to read it, contact me and I can give you a paragraph more or less giving you the gist of the writing along with my EMail if you want me to read over yours.

I don't see why not. The writing group has sort of died right now, but whatever. I'm up to read somebody's stuff and give my honest opinion on what they have written. Im sure other's here would be happy to help. Just PM them about sending them an E-mail, or requesting to read theirs. Im sure they would be happy to share stories.

Interesting idea for a story. All you need to to is e-mail someone if you want to help them or get help from them. I, right now, have sort of stopped work on my novel for now. :P So, I dont need any help right now, just the time and energy to get it done. But I can read your stuff if you want, and give critique if requested. ;)

That would be a no. So far this has just been kept up by individuals E-Mailing each other and requesting review. I can't speak for anyone else, but I have yet received anything from anyone for a while now. I myself have sort of...stopped writing for a bit. :o  Just life getting busy that's all. Do you think I should get one up?

Yes, I do. I have several works in progress that I would love input on; as well as read what other people are coming up with and giving them what help I can when they ask for it. If you want I can set up the folder myself, but everyone would need to PM me where/who to send the invites to.
