Title: Who's good at naming?
Post by: Varg the wanderer on October 16, 2012, 05:53:43 pm
Ok folks, who wants to help me name a character? I have a feisty, intelligent, female protagonist who has the place holder name of 'Carol', but she desperately needs a real name. So far I have Rika, which means "Powerful and Brave Ruler", since she does become a bit of a leader in some ways. Despite this being a norse name it still doesn't seem very human-y, which is important since she goes through a bit of a transformation once she's whisked off our dear planet. Who likes Rika? Any other name suggestions?

Rika is a good sounding name for the description you provided, at least in my opinion.

Now, what do you mean by "human-y?"  Rika and Carol both sound like human names.  Are you looking for a name from a specific origin or culture?

Not particularly, though I would rather stay away from names that are trendy or extremely mainstream

I sort of like Rika..but that's because of your description of her. She needs a name that's red, in my opinion. Generally, a name that starts with R will give you this effect.

EDIT:
Redyoshi here brought it to my attention that someone reading this may not know what I mean by "red" names. You see, I connect certain things, words, places, ideas, ect.. to colors. For instance, Rika is associated with the color red in my mind. Certain groupings of letters can make a word "appear" a different color. For instance Grizztof is green in my head, most likely from the beginning letter. I frequently talk about this in the IRC, but I dont believe Ive ever said it here... I just jot all the colors down to "auras" though they may not all be. That is the simplest way I can explain it, everything has an aura, I see said aura as a color, and you need a red aura name.  :)

Perhaps going through name lists online might help. I never
was good at picking names myself..

Katheryn is a human name that I would consider strong.

Irish names should be a good resource too..
