Title: Any good furry novels out there?
Post by: Jackie on November 16, 2013, 05:45:48 pm
I just wanted to know if there are any decent furry novels out there? Never read one before. I know about Kyell Gold, (My fave artists did some book cover and picture work for him) but his are more romance novels, and many are fairly explicit in places.

I was looking more for a fantasy kind of thing with anthros ^_^

(Lol, found a book on amazon and looked at the comments, "I like furry characters in books but not furries who are real people, because they all do the deed in fursuits." If I could roll my eyes all day at misconceptions, they'd probably be bleeding  :P)

I found a book published in 1918 called the grizzly king, which was made a movie in the 80's by Disney and the book is more commonly known by its name, The Bear. It's rather lovely and is, in the authors own words, a reparation for his deeds after his realisations. It's not furry per se, but it's the story of two bears and of course there is dialogue, plus his other books look very nice too, he's very much like Jack London ^_^

I don't know much about furry novels, but there are several
good short stories. (some could be called novels) on the following
website.
"WARNING Some of the stories have sexual content."

I have some short stories on my site too. G rated that is. :orbunny:

I bought this about a year ago, it's a collection of short stories about anthros. Some very imaginative and often touching stories in there. I get it down and read my favourites again every few months.

There's also Fire Bringer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_Bringer) and other books by that author where the main characters are all animals (deer in Fire Bringer, wolves in The Sight). While not about anthros, they might be up your alley.

There are several good furry novels out there.  Some of my personal favorites:

The Rats of Acomar by Paul Kidd
Mus of Kerbridge by Paul Kidd
Tailchaser's Song by Tadd Williams (non-anthro)
Watership Down by Richard Adams (non-anthro)

The Redwall series by Brian Jacques, is pretty good, at least the earlier books were.  I kind of fell off the wagon a while ago, as they seemed a little cookie cutter.

The Mistmantle Chronicles series by M I McAllister is much better than Redwall in my opinion

The Warrior series by Erin Hunter is pretty good too, though is non-anthro.

"Spellsinger" by Alan Dean Foster is...not completely terrible. The prose is a bit fanficcy but there are some funny parts too; among them a dragon-turned-Marxist after "The Communist Manifesto" fell through a wormhole.

"The First Book of Lapism" is decent and free to read online (http://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Lapism#References).

I haven't read it yet, but I hear "Summerhill" by Kevin Frane/Rikoshi/K.M. Hirosaki is good as well.

This fandom definitely needs more good writing.

The original 6 Warriors books were wonderful. They're a little bit childreny, but at the same time they're really well written and have a great story. If you haven't read them I highly recommend them.

Sadly this is a Wikipedia page for this story/book, but the links at the bottom of the page do not take you to a place you can get the book (for free or by paying).  Looking on Google, I only found a shady looking site that claims to allow a free download but wants e-mail and credit card information  :o

I would love to read this book, and would pay for it, but it doesn't appear to be for sale at any legitimate online book sellers.

I talked to Phil Geusz last September at Rainfurrest about this, and it sounded like the book was going to be re-released containing additional stories.  In fact, a novella of his came out recently in an anthology called Five Fortunes (http://furplanet.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=705) that will be part of the new book (or, at least, is set in the same world...  I don't remember for sure which).

WaterShip Down by Richard Adams is a nice furry novel.
Not just for kids. Many adults like it including myself.

He wrote other stories about animals. You can find more here.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede
Swordbird by Nancy Yi Fan
The White Dragon by Anne McCaffrey
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien (Beorn and Smaug ftw!)

Some furries like Kyell Gold's works but they seem too overly sexualized to me.

I believe Christopher Paolini was around the same age when he began the Inheritance Cycle.  (: But yes, it is wonderful that some teens can get into the spotlight and published!  (:

Well, I'm working on a fantasy series. It's not exactly furry but there are a three furry-ish races: a race of foxes with a culture based mainly on Japanese and Chinese cultures. A race of anthro dragons, and a collection of primates (kinda like Planet of the Apes). Feedback would be greatly appreciated. :orfox:

These are the only ones I can say anything about... Honestly, I loved them.

And then, there's the novel(potentially series) I'm working on... I doubt I'll ever publish it though, even if I do get it done in my lifetime...

Animal Farm, it's kind of geared toward a younger audience, but I have always liked it.

Animal Farm is an excellent political commentary and a good furry novel... (:

I actually have never found a novel I particularly like by a known member of the fandom, though I've been here for several years.

For older audiences, there's the novel Felidae which has violence and sex, set in Germany with non-anthros, but is primarily a grim feline murder mystery.

There's also The Fox Woman, which has adult themes but is about romance and existentialism in ancient Japan between kitsune and humans.

I remember one called The Cat Who Wished to Be a Man from my childhood, which is suitable for all ages and geared towards young adults or older children.

I found that book in the library as a kid, and I LOVED it.  It's by Lloyd Alexander.
