Title: A "hippogryph" (sp)
Post by: Kada-Ru on June 14, 2004, 10:42:09 am
WS and I went and saw the latest Harry Potter movie this past Saturday and I fell in love with the creature that had on there. I believe they called it a 'hippogryph'. I'm not sure of the spelling.

Last night I sketched my rememberance of it down on paper and colored it with markers and prisma pencils. I know it isn't exactly like the one on the movie but I didn't have a reference to study at home so this was my version. The idea is still the same though. (smiles)

Enjoy! (smiles)

I looked Hippogryph up on the internet and was surprised by the definition! Though the one on the movie was part horse and part gryphon (oops, think me forgot wings!;)

Here is one definition I found pertaining to a game:
Quote
Hippogryphs are ancient, magical beasts whose bodies resemble both stags and ravens.

Though here, is like the one on the movie:
Hippogryph

Another version inspired by the Harry Potter series:
another hippogryph

I believe I need to redo mine and give it its wings. (smiles)

I love hippogryphs so much.  I have a figurine of one next to my computer that my friend painted for me.  =^_^=

There's great colorations on yours, Kada!  It really came out good.

Thank you all!

Yes, I did notice they come in all different combinations when I went looking on the internet. I do have to start remembering to put in my wings! I left them out on another piece I did. :( I will probably go back over both of them and put in the wings with the acrylics. not sure yet though.

Yes, I wanted it to be bright and I thought the color purple would stand out. (smiles)

(giggles) Thanks Patrick! I forgot the wings so I have 2 that I forgot wings to and will be adding them when I find some time, with the acrylics as that is the only thing I can use to 'fix' them at this point. (smiles)

It's a really awesome piece.  Mythological beasts are very fun to draw.  I'm inspired to try more out.  Soon, I'll be drawing a certain winged horse  :)

I know this is not really the place for this (sorry Kada  ) but I have just seen Harry Potter and I was somewhat scaried by its choice in food!

Thanks Patrick! (giggles) No worries.

BTD, yes, I know. I ignored that part when I was creating the pic. I just liked the character as it was part horsey! (giggles) So since you saw the movie, you got the reference to the pumpkins in the background? (smiles)

Usually I don't worry about what the character has a taste for when creating it. I don't show any of them eating! (giggles)

Well, I will be drawing a certain otter eating pizza when I get the chance though. (smiles)

Thanks, Sunfire! I went to put the wings on with my acrylics like I did one of my other pics but the colors I needed had dried in the tubes!

Unfortunately, Chimera, this piece isn't going to have its' wings. I will have to create another one with wings later. My acrylics dried up in their tubes and are not usable. :(

I can't believe I haven't seen this pict yet.  It's beautiful.  :)

Whay medium do you use?  Acrylics?

Anyways, have you ever thought about doing some pictures on black paper?  Sometimes using dark colored paper gives a certain richness that cannot be accomplished with lighter colored paper, and I am a bit curious to see what your work would look like on it.  :)

I forgot all about this actually.

Ulario, I did that one with markers and prisma pencils. I will be working on using acrylics more in the future.

I have done some work on black paper with oil pastels and really liked the results:

"Snarling Jaguar" click for larger image

"Jaquar Bath" click for larger image

"Wolf's Stare" click for larger image

"My first Gryffon" click for larger image

"The King" click for larger image ( colored with Prisma pencils)

I do plan on creating more in the future with the black background with acrylics. I think they would be awesome! :)

Very nicely done, Kada! I love the colors you chose and the flow of feathers really turned out nice.

I don't know much about acrylics but isn't there something you can buy to restore the ones that dried up? I'm sure adding water wouldn't work like it does for watercolors...

 (:

Don't know Sumarra. They are all quite new to me. (smiles) When I have time again to get back into creating some more art and have some more acrylics, I will add some wings to it.

MD, yes I know. I stated that I forgot the wings when I did the piece and that I will be adding wings at a later date. Thanks though. That's the proper spelling?

I searched the net and called an art supply store but I couldn't find anything that restores acrylic paint. Sorry Kada.

At any rate, nice job with the pick (:

No, that would be a Phelddagrif or perhaps a Questing Phelddagrif.  ;)

(For those that don't know, that creature type was made up for that game. "Phelddagrif" is actually an anagram for "Garfield P.H.D.", a nod to the game's creator.)

I think that's "beckon call" isn't it?  I mean, what the is "beck"?  Anyways, I agree with Patrick about the cover art.  Not very impressive.

Sorry for the delayed response. I don't get to check out everything on the forums much of late and didn't realize someone responded! Thanks again!
