Loc Stitches Thing
« on: May 15, 2017, 05:58:30 pm »
So I've recently taken up cross stitch (recently as in, I only learned a week ago, and still have a few techniques to learn). My eventual aim is to do a hanging for a wall in my house, and to do small to medium sized cross stitches of people's fursonas.

So here's a few things I've done so far (note: I have done a couples of others. However, they are for friends who use the fourms, and they want to be surprised, so I won't be posting them, such as the small one I have done for Fern, until I have given the stitching to the person).

The first one I did, nearly completed.

And basically done. If I have leftover thread from other projects, I might add a few more hearts onto it, then fill in the blue and brown as needed. Then I just need to frame it. A present for Weisseman.

An experiment in shading, and later on in different outlines and borders. Ongoing, as I'm using it to test new things on, but it is a pug.

I will be, yeah :3 It just might be a little while.

My experiments in shading on the pug are going into this piece. It's a lot larger, so is going to take a lot longer. And yes, it is animal related.

Nice work.  Will be interesting to see how it comes
out. I imagine you could find a lot of patterns online
as well.

The shading and bordering experiment is done. It doesn't look fantastic because it was just a learning exercise, but it turned out better than I thought and taught me a lot.
including to keep the back of the work neat.

Pictured above: A Goddamned Mess. Seriously stitching through the mass of thread was a trial and a half all by itself. Making more effort to keep things neat in future.

These look awesome. I've thought about stitching before but I don't think I have the patience for it, ha ha. I've always enjoyed that sort of pixelated design though.

Real nice work Loc. Embroidery is a art form loved by many
people. When I was youngster a neighbor lady showed me how
to do this and other artistic crafts. Like knitting, and crocheting.

Keep up the good work. :orbunny:

I've been bust working on some other projects and IRL life stuff, but I still find time to add a line of thread to this at least a few times a week. I've got the hang of doing half stitches now, so I can smooth off a few of the corners and edges, which this design didn't originally call for (but I decided to edit it a little bit). Not done all of them, but some of the ones that would be a bit more glaringly obvious when I do the outline. If I even do the outline - I might leave it without and do a slightly coloured background instead. I'm undecided at this point. I'll see how it looks when I finish it.

I'm less than 1/4 of the way through.

Thanks guys :3

I've given in and bought a larger square frame (adjustable size) to do the larger projects on. Saves me constantly readjusting the hoop or risking squashing stitches with it. The hoops will be what I use for smaller pieces, or ones with just one thing in the middle as opposed to more sprawling designs that cover the whole fabric. So when I start on fursona heads, I'll be doing those inside a hoop.

OR, I have a small plastic box that the current project goes into, along with the pattern, all my thread, fabric stuck with needles (although I want to make myself a proper pincushion) and some scissors. And the screws for my hoops. That all goes into my bag and comes everywhere with me so I can do some work on it when I have a spare five minutes. The hoops are too large to go into the box, so they are separate in my bag.

I only have that large leaf to finish up, and then I'm done with the green! For a little while at least, there are a couple more leaves at the top of the piece, but I'll be doing them last. I'm quite excited to be working with a different colour for a change.

I'm now using a stitching frame instead of a hoop for large things.
While it takes longer to set up and is less portable due to the length of the arms, it is adjustable and the attachment points don't go over the stitching area. Which means I don't have to keep unhooking it inbetween sessions. I don't take the larger pieces with me to do on the go much anyway, so lack of ease of transport isn't much of a problem. The overhang on the arms also mean I can rest it across my lap easily or balance it on my knees and take some of the stress off my arms.

I'm now done with the green, and can start working on a different colour.

Stitching with a frame takes some getting used to. It is a lot larger and heavier, and more awkward to turn over to fix threads in place. But it is more comfortable to hold for long periods, and I can brace the limbs over my forearm and knees.

I'm going to have two large-ish projects on the go. I've got something I'm working on as a gift for Fern. I'll be taking progress pictures as I go, but I'll be posting them all in one go after I've given it to him.

I'm also thinking about starting to take "commissions" for fursona heads. I think I'm good enough to be able to pull that off now. Small, fairly basic ones at least.

And another progress update on the "ivy" project:

When finished, it's going to be a present to my parents.

I'm still here, and still stitching. I'm working on a large piece for Fern, which is a bit over halfway done, but I'm doing the backlog of tiny ones in the downtime, just to keep myself in practise.

Those are so cool!

I really enjoy cross-stitch, but my back sides are always a complete mess... I also find a Q-Snap style frame to be a lot easier than a hoop when it comes to the hand holding it not cramping up, and to being able to flatten a large piece back out, it doesn't crimp it as badly as a hoop. Though sometimes I do small things in a hoop, too.

Anyway, I love all the pictures you've shared... I'm not sure which is my favorite. Maybe the pug...

The needleminder is the cheerful little creature in the top left with all the spare needles stuck to his face.

I don't know what the plants are but looking at them, I think you might be right on mandevilla (I didn't know what that plant was until today, so thank you :) I learned something new). They are climbers with pink flowers, and the shape looks right.... I'm going to say that is what it is from now on, as whoever made and/or sold the pattern never specified it was anything else.

Glad you like it :) It's been really fun to do so far. The plants are the easy bit though, after this it gets a bit more complicated when I start work on the animal in the picture.

The plants are nearly done. I only have the top flower and its surrounding leaves left to do.
