Regrets?
« on: November 17, 2020, 12:22:21 am »
I watched videos on YouTube.  A brilliant lady who is an electrical engineer,  self taught,  is doing great amazing things. I see in her.. Who I could have been.

I started electronics when I was 9?  Batteries,  bulbs,  switches. And I mean I never stopped.  I learned the hard way,  experiments,  many failures,  a lot of hands on learning,  practical knowledge.  I can fix many things,  and can guess how things are designed.  Honestly it's second nature to me.  I have designed and built,  tested, tuned many circuits.  Analog,  digital,  mixed signal, rf, instrumentation,  you name it.

So here's my regret.  I went to college to make it official i was an electrical engineer.  It was easy.  Electrical classes were too easy and I went to a good engineering school.  I got a crap job.  And my job was... programming.  It was 2008 and we had the great recession and no one was hiring, so I took what I could get.  I can do programming but I'm not passionate about it.  Not my true love.  But I've NEVER been employed to do circuits!  And because of this I can't get hired for what I know well.  And in my career,  I've worked with many engineers who quite frankly stink at circuit design. No originality.  I work with one now.  I'm constantly engrossed in their work,  and find mine boring.  And I can do their job better than I do mine,  and better than they do theirs.  I'm not bragging,  it's the truth in this case.

So I regret taking a job that was programming.  It has directed my whole life to this point and I see no way to change it. I live a life I stink at.  All because I started in programming and stayed in it.  What to do?

So, if you are so brave,  list only one thing,  the biggest thing,  that you did or didn't do, which changed your life in a way you regret.

Regrets? I have plenty of them. But I don't think there's one regret that tops all others in my life. If there is, I'd rather not say what it is.

I get that.

And I suspected some of us have regrets we don't want to mention.

So how do we/you deal with a regret?
It can't be changed.
What is your coping mechanism?

I try to focus on what I still have,  and be positive.
Sometimes I actually try to work to fix what I regret.

So do most of us just acknowledge the regret and move on,  or do we try to change it? Or do we hide it all it goes away?  I'm curious how some deal with it.

It depends for me on what the regret is. Some cannot be changed, no matter what - Learn from them and move on. Don't dwell on them and let them rule your life, but don't forget any lessons that might have been in there that you can use going forwards.

Some, you can still fix. You can go back into training, resuming talking to someone, going and doing that thing you always wanted to do when you were younger but never found the time to. People often aren't as powerless as they think they are.

There's a saying I found on Facebook long ago. It goes like this:

"Everyone makes mistakes in life, but that doesn't mean they have to pay for them the rest of their life. Sometimes good people make bad choices, it doesn't mean they are bad. It means they are human."

I acknowledge it and move on mostly.

Made a lot of mistakes, but I don't dwell on them. If you keep staring in the rearview mirror you're guaranteed to crash.

Good quote.

I have tried to fix a few regrets.  I regret having left my old place and losing a whole lot.  Now,  I'm trying to remember those days and hold onto what I have now.
I regret not trying harder to keep my old pup Heidi alive,  but I am trying to remember I was at a loss what to do.  So I'm trying to move on.

Yep,  I believe this one.  I am glad others know and understand this.   However some people apparently don't let people change in their minds.  Unfortunate.

I regret going to the cheapest college rather than the college I most wanted to attend.

Yeah, I have less debt, but I got what I paid for.

I often wonder about my college too....
It was what my family could afford, and it was close to home such that I didn't need to live on campus.

But at least we tried to further our education when the opportunity came up.

I too have regrets. One I'll deign to mention is not booking lodging at the hotel hosting the last furcon I  attended. Then again, getting proper rest in a quiet room off-site may have been a good choice.

I am starting to regret having a dog named Wanda.  She is getting weirder and stuff.
Not sure how much more I can take of her.

I regret not being more bold at times, when I was younger and more able to deal with lots of different things at one time.
Now I wonder what could have been.

I regret throwing away all my pokemon things back in the late 1990's.  My parents said I was too old for it...and I was getting ready to leave high school, so I guess I believed them.  I lost all my cards, trinkets, figurines, pokeball keychains etc.  Why was I told to "grow up" when all I was doing was having innocent fun?  Heck there were still kids at High school playing it, and were my age.

I regret letting some people tell me what to be and do.

We all have to grow old in our lives. But there's no rule or law that says we have to act our age. ;)
