2 new sketches!
« on: March 11, 2003, 01:36:41 pm »
Ok. Yesterday/way early this morning, I created two new sketches for the family. I have one more sketch to complete! I already have an idea how I want to color them. This is getting easier and faster it seems!  '<img'>

I had scanned both and actually saved them to my harddrive but after doing that on both I didn't like parts so I took my sketch and fixed the parts I thought needed changing. I didn't mind because I am really happy with the results.

The first sketch, "Young
 Cheetah Stalking"
, I learned a lot from looking at a TON of photos of Cheetahs! I was surprised to see that their 'hair' was rather unruly with young one and as they get older their 'hair' shortens and smooths out. Really an interesting picture.

The second sketch, "Lunch time for the Squirrel Monkey", I tried something new with this creation. I have seen artists use 'boxes/circles' etc., with some of their creations. I really loved the affect it gave the pics but never really tried it before. But, on this particular piece, I wanted that effect. So, I just got the image in my mind and sketched it! I also took liberties with my imagination and created the leaves that were in the photo putting them all over the place and where I thought they would look best.

After scanning and saving it I realized the tail didn't fit the monkey. In the photos I used as reference, these Squirrel Monkeys have very thick prehenstile tails and it looked twice as long as the monkeys body, so I had to re-sketch that as well.

I am very happy with the way the two have turned out! I can't wait to color them!

They're really nice, Kada.  The Cheetah one is interesting with the hair.  I didn't know that about them, either.  I can't wait to see that one all coloured.  I bet it'll be great.  The monkey picture is also good.  The pose does look quite monkey-like, and he's feeding like you see on TV, etc.  Can't wait to see this one coloured, too.  Sorry I can't be very constructive with my words on your art.

Not a problem, DrakonianDanceR. You think they look 'really nice' and that is still a critique. You could have said they were ugly as sin as well!  '<img'>

So, even telling someone it is something that catches your eye or not even if you can't give them detailed critique, you are still letting them know what you, personally, think of it.

I will work on coloring them tonight and will post them tomorrow. I want to sketch another jaguar and color it before this weekend and I am pushing to get this accomplished!

My health didn't allow me to color both sketches so I colored the one that I really thought would turn out great!

Here it is: "Squirrel Monkey having lunch"

I colored this one with Prisma pencils and a small amount of chalk. It took about 4 hours to colorize. I am really pleased with the way it turned out!

After scanning it, this is getting to be a habit I am noticing, I realized it needed some more shading in areas so I fixed what I thought needed shading and then re-scanned it. I guess looking at it on the monitor after scanning it gives me a different perspective of looking at a piece.

I hope you all enjoy the final work as I enjoyed coloring it!

Enjoy and ANY comments are definitely welcomed!

Wow, that's really impressive.  The colouring looks a lot better than I was thinking it would look like.  Nice work on it - the colouring went really well.  Great stuff.

Thank you, DrakonianDanceR!

See you can critique and you know something about art!  '<img'>

For the cheetah I am thinking of trying something new with it. I have been having it run through my head and hopefully it will look just as good on paper!

*One more sketch to do then 2 colors and I am done! Yeah! Yippy!*

hmmmss. ... Well, then I get to work on AC stuff! I'm thinking of getting 3 panels. I can do that many pics before AC. If I do more I might get another panel. Will see though. A lot of time hanging stuff and WS is really good at putting things up so they  make a nice showing.

Wow! Kada! That Monkey looks awesome! You've improved a lot! I particularly like the border you made, and it shows that you took time on the background. The depth in this piece is your best yet. Stick with this method of coloring and you'll be selling prints all over the place!  '<img'>

I know what you mean about the scanned perspective, I have the same thing happen to me when I think I'm done. The scan always shows me things I missed. hehe.

Thank you, Sumarra!

I really had fun creating that piece. The monkey itself is just so cute and cuddly! I think it was a lot easier to work with than the chimpanzee or the orangutan. WS critiques my stuff as well so I get some ideas from him. He thought the border made the pic too dark so what I did was lighten up the blue in the background. Since it was done in chalk, yay my favorite medium, I used my eraser to lighten it.

I have seen these types of borders on other artists pieces and really liked how they brought out the main subject. I am planning on doing some more of those.

The leaves, and the squirrel monkey, I colored using fine short lines of pencils. To smooth out the color of the pencils, I went over them with some chalk. I did that same technique with the adult dragon I made. I didn't like all the lines the markers left so I went over them with the chalk. It really seems to help with smoothing out the colors.

I think it is my best so far as well! Thank you.

I just started noticing the things in the scans a couple days ago. Never really paid attention to it before I guess.

I'll be glad when I am creating some more of these pieces for AC so I can sell some originals!

What sort of things have you got planned for drawing for AC?  And it's interesting to see your methods of doing your art.  As already discussed, the borders work pretty well from what I've seen, I like that.  Again, good work.

Thanks, DrakonianDanceR.

That was my first border but I do plan on doing that again. I really like how it turned out. I have to find just the right photos though that would work with the borders. Not all of them would.

Right off, I know I will be creating 6 erased chalk pieces. Those all sold at the last AC. Surprised the daylights out of me! These, I color the whole piece of white paper with one color of chalk then use my eraser to 'create' the drawing. After that is done, I outline it so others can see the image better. That is it.

The others, well, I will keep those to myself till they are done. (giggles) Don't want to tip my hand before then. I'm sure others have created the same things but I want to try and be first... I guess. (giggles)

Well, with the borders, I guess the more you practise using them, the more you'll get used to knowing what sort of border works with what sort of picture, etc.  Concerning what you're doing for AC, that sounds quite good.  It's like you colour the picture first, then draw it after (with your eraser).  Interesting.  As for your last paragraph, I completly understand.  I'm the same, that if I think I'm on to something original, I want to keep it to myself until it's done incase someone 'borrows' the idea.  So I understand your thinking in that.

Yes. My first ones, the originals hangin on my apartment wall, aren't as detailed as the ones I did last year. I just got the ideas in my head then 'erased' them on paper. Sort of a reverse thing I guess.

The ones for last year, I used a couple of photos, one for the lion and one for the wolf pups, to created those. The dolphin one I did last year was the re-do of the first one. I didn't like the first one so redrew it and liked the second one much better.

I will probably be using some photos this time around too for more inspiration. I have a few ideas already floating around in my head for those.

Yeah... I know I may not be the first to do any of these, like with my erased chalk ones, but I haven't really seen any either from others. So, we will see. I like creating new things. Mainly just to see if I can do it.

Very interesting indeed.  And I do appreciate you sharing this with me.  I'd like to give one of those chalk pictures a go myself, but I don't have any of the vital ingredients: chalk.  Anyway, I think for now a pencil is more than enough.

The squirrel monkey is really wonderful. It looks realistic and fits in nicely with the background.  The composistion is really nice and the colors seem to work well together.  I'm really impressed with your coloring...and envious.  The monkey looks furry!!!  Great job!   '<img'>

(giggles) Yes, DrakonianDanceR. I guess it would be a good idea to have some chalk when creating a 'chalk' piece!

Thank you Ayame! I really enjoyed working with that one. I think it was because the Squirrel Monkey was easy to work with. Seemed more cuddly and warm, and furry compared to the Chimpanzee and Orangutan I did.

I liked how the pencils worked together this time too. I am getting better at using them.

I also printed out some info on each of the species and put it in the sleeve behind the particular picture so that the family will get some real life info on the animal and not just the drawing.

That idea just came to me and I felt it a cool idea. I think they will like their presents!

That's a really good idea.  I know I always like to find out about animals, as they're all so different and interesting.  I know your family will love their presents, and appreciate the time and effort you put in to them.

Thank you, DrakonianDanceR.

I do too. That is probably why I did it. I will be doing that in the future I am sure.

The info I printed out also let me know which animals are endangered and which are not. I think that was cool too.

I finished coloring the young cheetah.

"Young Cheetah Stalking"

I tried something new with this one. I used Oil Pastels on the cheetah and the green and blue are chalk. The 'grass' is markers.

I am not really that pleased with how this one turned out but it turned out ok for what it was.

Ok, I wasn't really happy with the other pic so I redid the fur stuff with some suggestions from WS. Here is the improved piece and i like it better:

"Young Cheetah Stalking" 2

I reworked the 'mane' with markers since the pencils wouldn't work over the Oil Pastels.

Tomorrow I will rework on the grass part with some suggestions from WS. Hopefully they will work. We will see! I will post that one as well when I am done.

I thought the first one looked alright, but if you weren't happy with it, then you did the best thing, and changed it.  I think the second one does look better, as there is more detail in the mane, as well as all over the fur, with its markings.  Nice work.

Hmm, I'm not sure exactly what you could do, and with what, but looking at it, I thinl you could try to make it look a little thicker.  But like I said, I'm not sure how you'd achieve that look.

Lunch time for the Squirrel Monkey looks like something you would see on a nice denim Zoo shirt, with whichever Zoo's logo underneath it.  Have you ever thought of sending a portfolio around to different Zoos?  With that quality of work you could easily compete (and do really well) with gift shop art like cards, magnets and the like.

Also, the drawing alone is very striking and would stand out really well if it were embroidered on a denim shirt even if only in one color.  It has a great deal of depth to it.

It's an excellent drawing.  I really like it. '<img'>

(giggles and blushes) Thank you for your kind words, Sky Rigdon.

I am still building up my creativity. That is the best to date and to try and duplicate it I am sure I will need a lot more practice! (giggles)

I think sending my stuff to zoos and other places is too soon for me. I am basically still a beginner with a long ways to go. I do appreciate your words of great confidence though!

And FYI, I am building a portfolio. It will have copies of ALL my works.

Many years ago when my son was under a year old I used to live with my sister. In order to keep the babies sheets separate, she has one of her own, I 'liquid' embroidered some animals onto my sheets. I don't know where they are today.

Anyway, with my envolvement in the tropical fish industry for many years and a member of several fish clubs, I created an art piece for one of the shirts in 1995. This isn't a furry pic but one I did non the less. I wouldn't mind doing more shirts with my art. I have thought about creating some other things with my art but only time/money will tell if I can actually do them or not.

Here is the "Fish Logo" I created for one of the clubs.

I know this has nothing to do with furry but when you mentioned t-shirts and stuff I remembered this shirt. I got the digital and took a quick pic.
