I was just wondering about this, so what do any of you think about it? I've read that animal totems can change throughout your life, but what about your fursona???

Sure it can!

I'm not a therian (I think anyway), but from what I've heard, animal totems can and do change from time to time.

When I first found the fandom, I started as a grey wolf. However, over time I eventually made a full transition over to being a husky. Also keep in mind that some people have multiple fursonas though I only have one.

Currently though, I'm happy being a husky and don't plan on changing it. '<img'>

Welcome to the forum, and yes, they can change. I started out before even knowing there was a name for furrys as a four-legged "Therian" Black Panther. Then I became anthro, then a Dragon ... and now I'm a Snow Leopard. Happy at the moment as one and don't plan on changing it any time soon.

You can change your fursona, have alternate fursonas if you just can't choose one species, or even be a hybrid of two or more species! ^^ There are no rules as to what you must be, really.

I used to be a raptor (no really) before adopting the impala... both fursonas are older then me knowing about the fandom, who knows I might switch back and forth sometime...

and as far as characters I have tons, most of them ungulates... there's a pronghorn antelope, a few elk, some whitetails, a sika deer doe, an okapi, a brama bull, a chamois, and a chamois/springbok hybrid, and a gazelle barbarian... because something this cute being a barbarian is so much fun

Depends. If the Fursona is merely a character used to represent yourself then yes, it can change.
I'm not sure about spiritual Fursonas. Totems can come and go as they please, but other than that, I'm not sure if an animal one feels a strong spiritual connection to can change or not. I've felt Dog's presence for my entire life and I can't imagine that changing anytime soon, but it may be totally different for someone else.

sure it can!  you don't have to be some uber lifestyler to be in the fandom, and many furs will feel closer to one species than they do at other times.  I've found that species choice tends to change with mood, time, and creativity.  at first, I was pure fox, because of my love and affiliation with them.  then I changed to folf after deciding that I wanted to study wolves and other canines as well after college (I want to be a wildlife biologist for an occupation).  went back to fox for a while because I felt like I was copying off of Mazz, the fur I'd first heard the term folf from.  however, after my sudden extreme love for deer, I combined that with my previous fursona to create "Agent" Fox, the first original (I think) deerfox hybrid character.  he kicks arse now, and I'm glad I allowed myself the leniency to change over the years to coincide with my passions and interests at certain times.  '<img'>

oh and btw, welcome to the site!  be sure to post a thread in teh greetings forum, as we love pouncehugging new members.  '<img'>

I guess.

My original 'fursona' was a mouse (who later became her own character, Chuchu), now it's an eagle.

Yes it can. I use to be a Gray Wolf, then a Bunny but I missed eating meat so now I'm a European wolf (I'm German/French/Irish).

I may go back to a Bunny but still eat meat. ':p'

Yeah, fursonas can change. Like some have mentioned, no prob if it's just a "character". However, spiritual fursonas can change too... I was a cat up until a few years ago. Had fursonas since I was old enough to form coherent thoughts. 'Course, the kitties varied, and I had plenty of side characters too, but the two fursonas I used constantly and recurringly were Cassie and Ripper. For a little while, I kind of drifted without a fursona, since I didn't feel that cats 'fit' me like they once had. Near the end of that period, I came across a short passage about the mythological essence of coyotes in a book, and it totally enthralled me. Been a 'yote ever since! '<img'> I do still have cat in me, only a tiny bit though.

As for totems, mine revealed themselves to me about the time I came into my coyoteness. Both are canines, and I don't feel that changing either. In a bit of confusion earlier this year, I started wondering about the connection I have to my feline side. (It was when I visited my sister- communing with 5 or more felines on a daily basis'll do that to ya. '<img'> ) I think this is when I really came into acknowledging my cat side. After a bunch of thought on the subject, I realized that I have a feline soul (I'm a therian as well) who most often occurs in canine incarnations. Over 50% of my past life memories, however small, are in the form of some canid or another.

So yeah, maybe it's a sort of transspecies thing, maybe not... but that's the best way I can describe myself- feline essence, incarnated as and protected by canines.
We have a fascination with the darkness, although we're standing in light.
We have the strongest sense of kindness, but we still can't treat our own selves right.

Hmmm....to go a bit deeper, you can ask the question, is it changing, or are you changing? You dont so much change your fursona as much as you are changing and it changes along with it.

Can my fursona change?  I ["darn" edited out] well hope so.  He does wear pants and they do need the occasional laundering.

I don't see my fursona's changing any time soon.  Barring a few trivial changes in colouration he's much the same as he's always been and I can't really imagine shucking him as though he were an outworn coat.  But that's just me.

Well of course a fursona can change. Something that few furries seem to realise (as hypocritical as it is) is that you can be whatever you want when you want and how you want! Anything from normal animals like foxes and wolves, to stranger things like purple furred fire sprite baby insectaurs.

That is one of the truely wonderful things about the furry fandom, is it not?

'<img'>  I think this question has two anwers.

If your all spirtual about this yes...

However you need to examin the change and be sure of it. It's important that if your guide or totem is one thing that you carefuly seek what's being changed and if it really is appropreate for you.

In the same breath if it's just a fursona... yah... it can change as fast or as often as you like. It can be as often as the weather if you like.

If your talking about a were.... then no... A were is locked into one animal because that's what they belived they should have been the whole time. If this changes then your probly not a were at all.

That's just my opinion on it.

Agreed. "In my opinion" is an even more important phrase than "sorry", "thankyou" and "please" in certain situations. In my opinion of course '<img'>

Anyways, back to the question. Yes, if you want to change fursona then I for one am not going to say you shouldn't. I have two fursonas myself, but the importance of them to me is slowly shifting from one to the other, and I may just end up ditching this one (an arctic kitsune) for my rabbit fursona (named Sanicle).... Talk about a wierd pairing ''
its the oddest thing. I really didnt see this coming! We had dinner and talked about going over to his mother's house on Sunday and about getting a puppy. I thought things were getting serious. Then I wake up on Thursday and hes not here! just like that - gone! I asked some of his buddies in the system 32 folder but they didnt know what happened. I just dont understand.........
