Hmmm....to go a bit deeper, you can ask the question, is it changing, or are you changing? You dont so much change your fursona as much as you are changing and it changes along with it.

::nods:: That's a good point.

Yes, they can. I wouldn't because my fursona is the furry me, and unless I change drastically I will stick with being a panthera tigriss (that's a tiger).
The same idea -I think- applies to a spiritual totem. It is the reflect of your personality and it changes as much as you do.

Mercy! Has Fury ever changed throughout her lifetime!

In the beginning, Fury was a white tiger... well, sorta. She was basically just a human with white tiger markings. You can see what she looked like here: Original Fury

Later, she became a white cat with spikey blue hair, black tail, black ears, and black feet. I don't think I have a picture of that anywhere that I can show you, though.

In late 2003, she turned earthen colors just out of the blue. And now she is what she is.
I bid thee farewell, oh furry fandom! May we meet again.

Of corse fursonas can change, unless you have some special attachment to one specis(its a typo, i know). Zan, my fursona, just came about when someone asked my fursona and i looked at my dog laying down by my feet  ':p' .

It actually came from a name of some character i tried on furcadia, named Zantage (not a dog, but a cat...... of some sort).

I will proabubly change this one eventually, ive never had any special attachment to it, but i DO like canines  '<img'> .

Yes I would have to say that a fursona can change at any time. There is nothing stopping you from doing so. I used to be just Ty Fox, Male anthro fox with the red hair, blue eyes, brown sox, and white chest '<img'> But I soon found myself realizing things about myself that I had supressed(sp?) for so long.

I soon added another part to my fursona. Vixy. She came into my life about 3 months after I joined the fandom. I am a polymorph, and not to confuse that with what it is known for. It means that I am not a herm, but I am able to change between sexes. So one minute I am male, the next female. (Can I do that IRL? No XD)

But as I was saying, it can change, you can add, you may never really leave your fursona. But whatever, it's who you are '<img'>

If I ever did change, it would just be to another sub-species of tiger. Perhaps i'll be a Melanistic/black tiger in the future. I've always liked those.

Yeah, of course a fursona can change.  People change, so I suppose fursonas can change.  It's really up to how the individual feels, and how they want their fusrona to reflect their desires.  Above all, there's no rule that says you can't change your fursona :3.  Never considered changing myself though.

I was just wondering about this, so what do any of you think about it? I've read that animal totems can change throughout your life, but what about your fursona???

Ask yourself this question first: Can your personality change?
Apply it to the question you justed asked.

I used to be a regular wolf, nothing specially different from an average wolf. Then I became a wacaw. I've kept the same general layout (Although I have a slight makeover in progress) but I can never settle on a NAME. I have too many different titles to the same character. Thats the only problem I've had with my identity.

Im always scepticle about when people say their fursona has changed. Your fursona and animal totems are what you are and that doesnt change on a very deep level. If youre fursona is supposed to represent who you are on that very deep level then HOW CAN IT CHANGE? If youre fursona is just representing a very shallow represent of you then yeah it could change.

I am a dog. I have always been a dog and always will be a dog. I was born a dog and will die a dog. It's a spiritual thing and one I don't see changing anytime soon. '<img'>

That's not necessarily fair. People change on the deep level over time, but it takes something profound that usually slams into them without warning. It could be something good like you buy a brand new house, get a job, and start living your dreams. It could be something like mountain biking across the continent (that will change you, believe me '<img'>), or something bad like your house burning down or a very close friend dying. Heck, even becoming older and more skeptical changes you deeply. Don't believe me? How many pictures have you seen where when we're really young and in school we're always smiling, and yet as we grow older the pictures seems darker. What always blew my mind is when you look at images of murderers on the news, they'll usually show a picture of them when they were younger during a kind of documentary, and from the picture you would hav never guessed that is what they would become. Makes one wonder what happened (I suspect too many things and too many levels, obvious and not).

It's no different with a fursona. For many of use, our fursona grew out of who we are at this moment, but there may be a lot of things different about us 40 years down the road. Maybe even 10. Personalities that change because of life experiences may seem completely alien to the old fursona, in which case a change may be in order. In time though, it may come back, sort of like a cycle.

A lot of people use the idea of totems and being a therian to bypass this argument and establish they will not change and have somehow given their identity much more thought. That's just as misguided. On the subject of totems, one totem may help you for a period in your life, but when you no longer need them why should they stick around? Instead, another one comes into play when you need it, though the first may come back or still always be there, it's just not so prominent. (This is only for those of you that believe in them of course '<img'>)

The same can be said for a soul. What is it? How old is it? Seems to me a soul is nothing yet everything, and if it exists forever then really a soul can be anything for anybody, it doesn't have to be any one thing at any one time, and most likely isn't. Not to invalidate the spiritual side of things, as I think they are very valid, it's just not as simple as "My spirit is a wolf and always will be wolf etc etc." That may be part of it, but it's not the whole part, there is a lot more I suspect we'll never understand.

Who you are in terms of an entity existing never changes IMO, but what you are or who you choose to become is always changing. But we like a sense of permanence and control, so we tend to filter out that which we don't understand and simply focus on what we do know, thinking that it's everything.

Yes, of course! '<img'>
I don't think there ever have been established set rules relating to such aspects of the fandom.
I'm actually in the process myself (I'm feeling like going back to my original, reptilian, roots '<img'>)

I'm of the opinion that a fursona can change, but it really depends on the person whether or not it does.
Some Furs have a fursona which was, I guess, "pre-determined" by totem animal or the likes. Others may choose an animal they feel close to or otherwise really like.
Me, I really like ravens, but at the same time, I feel that I was "drawn" to them somehow. I don't really remember when I started liking ravens so much or why. So, I have a raven fursona. I don't think I'll ever lose my raven side. But at the same time, I have a secondary fursona, a horse. He's representative of my masculine side, and also because sometimes I'll just feel more horse-y than raven-y. In that sense, I "change" fursonas when I shift, but at the same time, I don't change because they're both a part of me.

But I will agree, some people do switch fursonas too much.
Fruitcake is a legitimate gender in my book.

Of course a fursona can change. But it's not so much about the fursona changing, it's about the person. When I first got into the furry fandom, I was a black, bloody wolf - it was mostly just for the shock factor, since I was a bit more sheepy back then. Almost 20 fursona changes later, I've become a happy, friendly (if a little b**chy at times)  miniature pinscher. That's just who I am.

So in short, yes a fursona can change, and the number of times it changes can be unlimited (one of my friends, Eddie, has had - I think - over 50 ).

You know... Being that I have an EXTREMELY anti-authoritarian mentality regarding spirituality, I'm sometimes glad we aren't in the mainstream.  I don't think I could stand random people coming up to me in real life and saying "You're a wolf, you can't change that.  Ever."

When I was new to the fandom, I was an arctic wolf simple because I liked them.  They're strong and cuddly all at once.  In late 2001 that changed when I found gryphons were FAR more my style, or rather... birds in general.  They fit my mentality rather well in being quick and flighty.

Though... A couple months ago certain events led me to do a little searching regarding otters (rather playful creatures, agile and graceful, as well as smart)... and later still, a certain RPG-related race known as the Lutrai.

The result:  Today I'm an ottergryph (though the only easily noticable G-rated differences between me and a gryphon are that big piece of muscle some would call a tail, the thickness of the fur, and the fact that my hindpaws are webbed.)

As far as shamanism/"indian" stuff goes, I follow my own way and my totem is whatever feels right on an instinctive level at the time.  This has shifted between eagle, crow, dragon, otter, wolf, fox, etc.  and will likely continue to do so, depending on the situations I find myself in.
