Furry Tattoos
« on: September 24, 2003, 08:50:15 am »
This topic is kind of a splinter off of the Lifestylers question, and how furs choose to express their furry nature.  Fursuits are fabulous but expensive, and unfortunately can't be worn all the time.  As one means of expressing that I'm "furry inside," I've acquired furry tattoos,  and have five foxes presently on my hide.  They are on both arms and one leg, and I'll acquire others when suitable designs are found.  Would any other furs with tattoos like to discuss them here?  What do you have, and where?  Have they helped you feel furry?   ''

Hey Chaz -- a tattoo is usually a good investment; it's forever (hopefully), and no one can ever take it from you.  They told me to put sun block over mine when exposed to full sun to minimize the fading effect.  Consider getting a new one, and the wolf can howl again! -- Fox   ''

Howls,

Now thats something I didn't know.. no-one told me to put sunblock on it..

It was sun that bleached mine out.. its so faded now..

I think I will get it redone.

That's great, Sunookitsune!  To anyone considering getting a first tattoo, I'd stress looking around for the best artist that you can find at the most reputable tattoo parlor.  Don't go for the cheapest tattoo establishment as you tend to get what you pay for!  I hate to see kids marching around with poor-looking and even (shudders) home-done tattoos!  Save your pennies until you can afford to have one done by a real pro.  -- Tattooing is an art form, and is permanent!

The better tattoo artists will also consider working with a design that you bring in, and can tell you if it's feasible.  While such custom work costs more, you can really personalize your body art to make a unique statement about your furry nature.

I've been seriously considering getting a furry-themed tattoo. I wish I had the picture I was basing it on, but it's basically in the shape of a wolf's paw with some designs in it. I haven't spoken with a tattoo artist about it yet, as I haven't settled on anything other than the wolf paw outline  '<img'> . Fortunately I have a couple great tattoo artists not 5 miles from my house. Perhaps next time I get pierced I'll see if I can talk to someone there.

For anyone considering a tattoo, you can get henna tattoos at most beach resorts and other places to experiment with type, size, and location of a tattoo.  If you're unsure about a tattoo, this will allow you to experiment with one before you commit to the permanence of a real one.  I've been very happy with mine, but make sure before you go ahead; tattoos can be removed by laser treatment, but it's expensive and painful.   '<img'>

I've been thinking of getting a tattoo for a while. The only problem is that I'm a bit fearful when it comes to needles.

Hey Zero!  Let me commend you for your interest in tattoos, which is the first step.  Fear is a good and reasonable thing, too; let's delve into it a bit.  If your fear of needles is because of fear of contamination, most tattoo artists these days use disposable needles, and many will even let you watch them unpack them so you'll know its sterile.  If your fear relates to the pain involved in a tattoo, it does hurt a bit, but you've probably had far worse pain at the doctors, your dentist, or at work!  The worst part pain-wise is while the tattooist is laying down the outline.  The amount of pain will vary dependent on the size of the tattoo, its complexity, its location on your body, and the amount of time that you'll subsequently have to spend under the needle.  We all have different tolerances for pain as well.  The needle doesn't penetrate deeply; it's not like getting a shot over and over.

What's important to remember is that the pain is momentary and will quickly pass, but your great new tattoo will be with you from then on!  It's really worth it.  A small tattoo can be done in as little as 20 minutes; you can handle that easily!  Many people who get tattoos go back for others.  I started with a small black fox that I thought would be my one and only, but now I have six (all vulpine), seven if you count the original one that I had obliterated with a much larger one!  So you might say its addictive.  I'm looking forward to getting additional ones, but I have to be selective now as most of the common locations for tatts on my bod are occupied.

I've been kicking around the idea for some time now....I'd considered the Cheshire Cat from American McGee's Alice (I love and collect cheshire cats), but I would LOVE to find perhaps an old Japanese style fox..... I saw a wonderful ink drawing of an anthro cat at the smithsonian a long time ago (hehe, we furs have been around a looong time, ne?)....but haven't seen a fox yet....though Yoshitaka Amano's fox in Neil Gaiman's Dreamhunters was quite pretty....

I have an oriental-style fox on my left upper arm, and a much larger anthro-style fox on my right upper arm that's my favorite.  Most tattooists may have a few foxes or other interesting furry designs, but to really get something that you like, you may have to bring in your own creation.  You can get ideas from the web, or commission someone to design one for you.  The possibilities are limited only by your imagination, and what you can find or make up.  Something can easily be enlarged or reduced in size as well.

Tattoo artists like a challenge, and enjoy doing something different from the usual tribal designs that are presently so popular.  If they really like the work, they may photograph it and post it in their studio.  I know that having tattoos has kind of served to remind me of and reinforce my furry identity, as well as proclaim it to others when I wish to do so.  It's an emblem of your inner self that shows, and doesn't have the limitations of a fursuit.

I have a seated gryphon on my ankle and a gryphon on my lower back... but they're not anthro.

I always said that when I got my furry comic book published, I would get the name of my leading man tattooed on my arm... and since it's being published early next year, I've been coming up with ideas on how I'm going to put it together and still make it look original.

The closest I've ever had was a transfer tattoo of a wolf's head on my right arm. It's loooooooooong gone now.

I always wanted to get a tattoo of Miles prowler on my sholder, don't ask me why. Maybe if I am drunk enough I will get one. Still it will be hard to explain to the friends and fam.

There are many possible locations to put a tattoo, including some where most of the time only you'll know that they're there.  According to my friendly local tattooist, the tribal arm design rules at present for guys, whereas a tribal design on the lower back is popular with the ladies.  I have tattoos on both upper arms which are covered even in a short-sleeved shirt.  I have one on my lower leg which is covered when I'm wearing even a low sock.  I have another on my inner lower right arm which is visible in a short sleeved shirt when the arm is rotated.  A "stealth" location is under my watch strap, where I have a small fox cavorting.  Your tattoo can be as openly visible or as discrete as you choose for it to be.   '<img'>

Right--You'll have to fill out forms, and sign that you are of age to get a tattoo and agree to the procedure, accepting any risks involved.  Don't let that scare you, as you obviously take risks every day of your life if only when driving.  If you are underage, you can still get a tattoo if a parent signs, but it's not too cool to drag one's sire or dam into the tattoo parlor!  Tattooists need to protect themselves in our society where lawsuits have arisen over almost everything.  No respectable tattooist would work on someone visibly under the influence; after all, bartenders have been found liable for serving drinks to the inebriated when they go out and hurt someone or themselves.   '<img'>

Firefox_b, do you have any photos of the tattoos you have? I would love to see them.

Me, I'm not into tatooing. I did have a friend though when I lived in Sacramento that did that as a side line. He was quite good. I watched him work once and I only watched for a few seconds and decided to check out his fish with his wife instead.  '<img'>

I'd also love to see your tats, Firefox!

I think I may get one of the little chapter heading pictures from Dreamhunters that yoshitaka amano painted.....there's one that's a woman's face on one side, divided down the middle with a leaping fox on the other.  very pretty.

I'm pretty much planning to get mine in a spot no one else will see unless I show them  ''  my family would have siezures if they ever found out I got a tattoo.....heh.  I'm 26 and live 7 hours away from them, and still they drive me to drink.....

Annnyhow, ask to see pictures of the artist's work too.....especially custom stuff.  Places I've been usually have portfolios you can look through.

i had a t-shirt print i wanted as a tattoo but i took a picture and traced it and then redesigned it to show a chimera pouncing forward with wings spread with a blue flamed background, now all i need to do is find a reputable tattoo artist who is up for the challange
