I've been furry since my teens. I believe that is correctly stated that many join as teens because that is the normal age to find out the furryness. So, I have to agree, there's a lot of teen furries in here.

I have noticed that there are alot of teen furries out there... but then again, for a good number of them it is just a fad, and after a year or two they will just dissapear.

Ahh...Viva la internet!
Without it, the number of furry teens wouldn't be as big as it is, I'm sure. '<img'>

I came on here 'cause my friends said it was cool.

XD @ me

Nah, this is quite opposite of a fad for me.  I'm mocked, ridiculed, and shunned by public and even my friends for it. XP

Thats why I didn't say ALL of the recent influx of teens will be outta here in a year or 2. Since there are those that truely want to be in the fandom. I just know that alot of teens will lose interest and move on. but hey, the more that stick around the better XD

I think that it may be a search for acceptance, like others said.  For me it was CyanChat, and the rest of the MystCommunity.

But, sadly, that place has gone downhill since the whole wash of newcomers have come and basically ruined the chatroom (hard to explain:P)

The internet is a great place for people to find acceptance, as long as they remember there is an outside world as well  ':p'

well i may be a teen but i've been a fur all my life, i just didn't have a name for it until a few years ago.

the amount of teens, and how some act, bothers me though, not as much on this site but on some others.  a lot of teens i come across seem to be using furryness as a form of rebellion or for the shock factor.  some of them are in it for more than that but it is still their main reason for being 'into' it.  now of course i don't think this is the case with all furry teens, after all, i know its not like that with me, but its disturbing how some people are using this as a way to rebel just like 'becoming' 'goth' or 'punk'.  its something to worry about because teens who use furryness to shock people can give us all a bad reputation, something we're fighting as it is because of the media portrayals of furries.

with all the young people,I wonder why haters like to say that it's made up of middle-aged plus, fat, bearded men?

Old sterotypes are hard to shake.  From the commentary so far, it looks like a new stereotype might be surging to the fore:  the emo angsty OMG Fursecution furry.

I think I prefer the old sterotype.  And I'm not just saying that because I fit it (well, except for the beard & the male). '<img'>

But on to main question.  Without a doubt there are far more furry teens than before.  And without a doubt it's because of the internet.

Not to say that we old-school fen weren't into furry when we were teens, we definately were.  But unless you lived in a large city, there just wasn't much opportunity for interaction with other fen.  Until you were old enough to go to your first con, or unless you had a pen-pal who mentioned it (or was reading a fanzine you got in the mail), you probably thought you were the only one who *really* dug anthros--and you probably didn't even know to call it anthropomorphics.

So back in the day, furries in groups/cons tended not to be teens, simply because they weren't permitted to go by the parental units.

I've said it before...
Teens, or any young blood, is good for any group.
It ensures that the group will continue.

So many fandoms/groups have dwindled in recent years, like fans of silent movies, pulps, 78rpms, black and white cinema, etc., due to the lack of fresh fans joining in.

Course, with new blood comes new ideas, new trends, and new issues.  But that's what keeps things interesting.

Lets see, I've been a fur sence I was 13, 18 now.  Started writing then I was 14.  Became publicaly furry (at school etc.) at 15.  Put up my web site when I was 16.

I became Blackstripe when I was 14.  Literaly.

I think the influx is due to a couple things.  People like animals, and people like fantasies.  Furry is a combination.

Like someone mentioned before its probably a fad for some. I was HUUUUGE into Anime in Highschool...I was president and founder  of the Anime Club at my school. But now I cant stand most animes...and majority of the anime lovers around here I want to hit them with a whackity stick....if your not japanese dont spout out your japanese at me!

I dont think this is a fad for me however. Life has revolved around animals a long time...just took me a while to come out and say "Yup...I'm a fur.."

Internet availability coupled with that many teens spend said years doing a lot of soul searching most likely lead to this.

I've probably been a furry since I was a little kid but I think the big reason is that most teens figure out their interests in life during puberty. Also teenage years are when people start to get their artistic ability.

Not to mention they stop using the internet for research half the time XD

I've been in the fandom for about 8 years, back when I first got into it back in like middle school I think, I didn't even know of the existance of a furry community, I only know I saw some neat art on VCL and then on Yerf where I got my first tastes of the furry world. I sat back and watched the community for a while only getting really involved just lately.

A friend and I were talking about this the other day, new generation of furs don't like the stuff that most of us that have been around for a while like.

I'm a teen fur and mostly proud of it!  (I say mostly because I'm in the closet... '<img'> )  I've probably been a fur all my live and just never knew that there were other people like me.  I've always like stuff with/relating to fur.  I probably accelerated my furness like everyone else has stated.  The net.  Unfortunatly i got the wrong impressions because all I first saw was Yiff.  But I knew I liked the concept so I kept trying to find more out about the art style off and on threw the months.  I eventually couldn't deny the fact and I came to accept what I was and I joined up here.  (It was like, the first place I saw.  I'm conpulsive  XD ) I got a better understanding of the meaning "furry" and what it is to be one here.  Thats my short furry lifes story.  '<img'>

I started my forray into the furry world by looking at art and listening to a friend who is a fur. I still talk to him a lot (and often end up fuzzling his tummy). I liked the art so much that I wanted my own fursona. It started with a basic concept that's changed over the years. The funny thing is, I have lots of fursonas, now, each with their own unique personality. Godiva is my newest one and she's rapidly becoming one of my favorites.

As for the influx of teens, I'd have to say it's a combination of the internet, reverse psychology, and the fact that it's different and a lot more interesting than becoming a typical goth, punk, or whatever. If you're a goth, you're just a goth. But if you're a goth WOLF, then hey! You are suddenly the coolest thing ever. Or, in the case of some chatrooms/forums, "EVAR!!!!!11!!111elevenfive!!!"

The only thing that bugs me about the influx of teenagers is the fact that whether they're furry or not, they totally ignore any warning of adult content on ANYTHING. Video games, movies, books, websites, whatever. If they see something that's restricted, they want it even more. That's where problems tend to spring up. I suppose the thing that really bugs me is that parents nowadays are ceasing to be parents and want someone or something else to babysit their kids for them.

So for those people who like to cause problems that make us all look like a bunch of freaky wierdos, I would love for them all to disappear... they probably won't, but I can dream.

As for those who are new, I say come on in, have a seat, and relax! We're all friends here. ^^

Yeah, I joined the fandom as a teen although I'm 20 now.  Anyway, I had no idea until I stumbled upon Yerf one day that there were others out there that shared my love of "animal people."  I was amazed!  In fact I still am.

I wonder if most furries have always had this fascination or if they developed in from seeing it online.  My guess is it's a mixture of both.  Although I don't see why some people see it as weird.  I mean, I grew up watching Disney movies, the majority of which contain anthropomorphic animals, so why is it that "furries" are OMG weird?  I guess it's just all the yiff and bad publicity.
